Hi Jauwn! First time I saw one of your videos but I wanted to know the opinion of someone about this piece of sh... that's not only an scam for players but for their workers too (Like myself) I worked at Param Labs for abouth 6 months as Character Artist for both Kiraverse and their "new world-changing project" Pixel to Poly (Which is basically, the "make your NFT playeable" but for any jpg image) and as you said on your video, the models were super unfinished (even for people paying) since they only give us 2 DAYS to make a full character ready for animation, a normal model takes about 60h and those guys wanted a team of 30 artist to make 444 characters a month! So they're just bad-make characters, with poor quality. Another point is, they aren't anything similar to a AAA game studio, more a cheap-shitty outsourcing that hired a bunch of 3rd world, low-experience workers, and paid them $500-600 a month and the worse part? They didn't paid on time, and at the end scam all artist more than 2 months of salary. Almost all Kiraverse fans are paybots, or people who invest in the game, as well as the matches has a lot of bots. They will never release a real game, it's just for publicity, and to raise funds, and then everyone will disapear (That's exactly what happened to us, scamming us and not even giving us a contract)
A lot of adjacent gamestop NFT projects used the hype of Kiraverse to induce FOMO into their own projects, by promising their own NFTs could be used in the Kiraverse once it's launched. Of course, months later, that has not happened yet.
Yep. It’s all one big ball of hype for what is literally the unreal engine 5 starter project with swapped out assets from the unreal store. It’s borderline a scam, they advertise and sell NFTs for a product that is entirely different than what was delivered.

I was so confused. When I heard this game's name, I thought "oh cool, that KiraTV guy is making his own game, probably to make fun of all those NFT scams", but reality of nft "games" never fails to disappoint.
honestly my fist thought was someone was trying to say FU to kira and make a nft game that is "good" to tell him to shut up... but clearly they had neither kira nor good game in mind when they made this.
@@snakekingblues3017Callum Upton, channel similar to KiraTv also criticizing nft projects, made a game to prove earth2 devs a point. I think he also did smallscale mmo to prove a point to crowdfunding "dev studios" that don't release anything gameplay videos or early access after gaining millions of funding. Sure those games don't have nfts but some mmo projects have been as shady as these nft game studios are and earth2 is linked to crypto. So Kira making nft game as a joke or to prove a point doesn't seem that farfetched to me.
The downscaled puppet NFTs are such a great example for you point from the last video: No matter what content you NFT links to, how it is represented (if at all) inside the game is entirely controlled by the developers.
IMO, *for an NFT game*, where most of them are Facebook browser crap or rugpulls, something that you can at least actually play is a 3/5. For actual video games, probably 3/10. And that's only because now-unplayable dead online-only games fill out the 1/10 score range and even worse asset flips fill out 2/10.
@@TooFewSecrets if we go by 3 as "absolutely average" tho... well, Final Fantasy VII is 80 on Metacritic (tho I think that's the Switch version) so 4/5. This is nowhere near a 3.
This is the issue with NFTs in gaming: they are a feature seeking a game. They promote the game like the NFT is the main thing, but without the game it doesn't mean anything! And with the bad rep NFTs just further pushes down the game from whatever pedestal is in
Not to mention that it's a solution to something that Steam figured out with their marketplace years ago. They're trying to reinvent the wheel for no other reason than to inflate prices.
@@trevorlamb9324 I mean, the reason is not to inflate prices. The reason is to be the guy standing on the wagon once the wheel has been reinvented, rather than being another random person like the rest of us The inflated prices are just an additional bad side affect
NFT isn't even a feature. It's someone wanting your money to sell you the IDEA of owning a single URL. That's it! All NFTs were was a LINK that you didn't even own, as it was on a database, all you got was a questionable digital certificate of "ownership", it's like those "become a Lord" projects but those are at least are backed by real legal documents and a tiny plot of land where they plant a tree in your name. NFTs is like buying a bridge or a title without even getting a bright paper in return. Literally nothing.
Kiraverse is fascinating because it demonstrates why interoperable game NFTs are nonsense, by showing the one circumstance where developers have an incentive to support it: when they're being financed by NFT trading platforms. Developers patching their game to support new NFT collections makes no sense unless the project is a loss leader, and the point is to boost the value of the NFTs on the backing platform, or NFTs in general.
So many of these games that are trying to pretend to be bigger than they are use this neon-super reflective HD style and I don't understand. I've never seen an actually enjoyable game look like this, it doesn't look good, all it does is remind me of the 100s of asset flip games I've seen. It's like they think "good" lighting and HD textures are a replacement for art style
I just binged watched this entire series twice, right as Gamestop is shuttering the NFT marketplace. So "Rest in pieces MOASS Lyra flip with NFTs grafted on, not even the apes could save you or Illulvium"
So what makes this AAA? Besides the dev's statement? They seem inexperienced, just using a slightly modified unreal engine 5 template and only have a 1 million budget (which is absolutely tiny for AAA game). I wouldn't consider anything under 90million AAA.

I will never understand who would want to buy one of those NFT Avatars. The appeal is meant to be each of them is "technically" unique, but because they're all generated from a small pool of assets they just all look the same with minor variation, removing the point of them ever being supposed to be unique.
Every time I see something promoted as NFT, it's always that "asset pools" So I would like to know. Can I potentially commission an NFT that is highly personalised and unique because it's made by an artist i personally contracted ?
Very interesting video, I was always curious how those NFT games looked. However, I think you are waaaay too lenient with your score. This game looks like something one person made in two weeks, especially considering it's basically a starter project. Also, even if those assets are made by them, they are completely inconsistent. Everything seems randomly thrown together, with no one ever asking the question "why are we placing this here?". This is definitely not a beta as you said, but at most a proof of concept on how a NFT game could look like. My guess is that the devs wasted most of the money to bet on crypto, like it is usually the case.
Thanks for the feedback! I agree I was a little bit lenient on the score, and I probably should've given them a little less leeway considering they're selling this as a "beta". But, I wanted to give the game at least some points so I could have room to take points off if I ever re-review the game. However, it seems that after only 1 week of the game existing, the player count has already declined to 3-6 players on average, so I doubt the game will ever see another update. The devs already made a bag off of the GME apes and they don't even want to play the game already 🤣

@jauwn Do you even need to give the game a score? I think we get your overall impressions from the rest of the video, and the scoring section doesn’t tell us anything new aside from a few snippets you add. I noticed you’ve tended away from the scoring system in your more recent videos.
@_osrs the reason for that- roblox game developers are often teenagers who just have a passion to make something fun on a platform they like, not shills who want to gamble with crypto and hope to win big.
A failing of crypto in general, but especially for anything substantial like a game that’s at least playable. Blockchain is a legitimate technology, but is basically just a digital ledger; it was NEVER designed for any of the crap crypto bros have forced into it.
I wonder how kiraverse intends to implement such NFTs as the popular astronaut themed 9/11 man falling from the WTC to his death NFT that was released on GameStop’s marketplace?
I agree, the Gamestop stock situation is a deep and scary rabbit hole, indeed. That clip you showed was truly terrifying. I wouldn't want to be family or a co-worker when that guy snaps. Given he seems to be American, he probably owns firearms too (I know that not everyone in the US owns guns, but I think it's pretty safe to say that that guy does).
Correct, not every American owns a firearm. However, there's a pretty simple test to tell! Loud and proudly displayed american flag wall decoration = definitely has at least one gun That guy is the most gaudy example of this I've seen in a while lol
Appreciated the clear delivery (voice), and articulate and well-organized narrative. Subscribed. I'm so tired of game topic creators shouting "WTF!" about reload animations in their rantvideos.
It may not be an asset flip entirely. Some of the sets are so aesthetically bland I would believe the devs made it with some Adderall and a blender tutorial series
Lol, maybe. The devs claim in their Discord that they didn't use a single Unreal Asset store purchase, and proceed to ban anyone who accuses them of doing so, or just bans anyone who says anything negative.
@@darzeon It depends on the game, but using paid assets definitely is a very taboo practice among gamers, as it's what we call an "asset flip". Typically the sign of lazy / dishonest developers. Anyway, I can't prove that this is or isn't an asset flip which is why I treated it as if it isn't.

Honestly, the most reasonable use case for 'use your NFTs in this game!' would be something like giving the ability to tag a wall with your NFT picture, and use the fact that it is an NFT and can be gated by collection to handle any NSFW concerns that could be associated with that. Anything more complicated than that is suspicious at best. But in that space, there is potential to use NFTs. Set them as your character's in-game phone background, put posters on the wall, that sort of thing. It's not anything that you couldn't do with any import-image feature in the game, but still. Untapped potential.
Yeah I think that the old HL of TF2 type of spray would be more appealing. Just upload an image. Nowadays they have automated detection systems strong enough to flag/recognize inappropriate content. They could even charge $.99 for you to upload and it would still be a better deal than using an NFT
@@jauwn Absolutely. I'm almost as offended by the incompetence of the scams as I am by the fact that they are scams, to be honest. Would it have required a second animation and they were too lazy? I don't know what it is but that and the butt clipping just got to me
It would take work to add the gun to the roll animation. And if they do that, they can't just use the default template roll. And yes, the default motion blur in UE4 and UE5 games is absolutely hideous. So much, that I treat it as a graphical negative and every time some demo video of a new project is out that has the default blur on I think "looks interesting, but the graphics are super ugly"

Yeah, I can maybe see the custom NFT avatars working for maybe the first ten or so, but then wait times for your avatar will become longer and longer the more they have to actually make, rig, and test, and pretending there's a reality where this becomes the Fortnite killer they're hoping it to be, wait times for your avatar will probably be months before you can even play as it, and by then you've probably become bored of waiting and just started playing Apex or Fortnite instead. This will probably lead to them rushing it to get them out faster, causing the models to all break or be poorly implemented with ridiculous hit boxes and oversights and they'll probably degrade in quality, just so they can get them made before the player gets bored and goes to a competitor. This is exactly why I've long said NFTs are not the future of gaming that they all think it is.

since basically every NFT is a pallete swap, you'd only have to make a handful of rigs & animations and just swap out the models/textures - but i doubt the kiravese devs have any idea how to do that. hell, i'm pretty sure fortnite (and others) use the same rig on every skin so they can animate everything with minimal time wasting.
Lots of NFT collections also slightly change the character pose/location within the JPEG, though, so you might have to tweak texture mapping and UVs for each individual NFT even if the model is the same.

Its going to be frickin' wild if you ever run into a game that's improved by this garbage, or at least not made worse. Unlike nearly all of these NFT games there is an idea present here that I like; having a marketplace for artists to create and rig people’s OC and a readily available game to plop them into is something that I think has an actual audience out there.
This speaks more to the terrible state of the Web 3.0 space than to the achievements of Kiraverse devs, but the very fact that they made a game, even if its more of a skeleton of one, first and integrate blochain second already puts them miles ahead of almost every other title discussed in the series. In the kingdom of the blind a one eyed man is a king I guess.
Yeah, that’s very true. But, even though they’ve delivered a game, I feel like it’s just an insult to actual gamers. Asset flips are probably the most universally hated lazy game dev trope; and there’s just no way this game isn’t one. Unfortunately I can’t prove for certain that it is an asset flip, despite the game’s folder containing many references to asset packs, I didn’t see any of those packs used in game, only the starter kit. I worked at Param Labs for abouth 6 months as Character Artist for both Kiraverse and their "new world-changing project" Pixel to Poly (Which is basically, the "make your NFT playeable" but for any jpg image) and as you said on your video, the models were super unfinished (even for people paying) since they only give us 2 DAYS to make a full character ready for animation, a normal model takes about 60h and those guys wanted a team of 30 artist to make 444 characters a month!
Yeah, pretty much exactly as I expected to hear. Shame that you had to work for them, hope you’re at a better job nown
Shit that sounds terrible. I hope you are working for a nicer place now.

These nft games are really dumb. But what's even dumber are the people that by into them.
Jesus, Marantz talking about killing his kids and wife... like, I know he's probably not going to, but I also know that family annihilation by guys who invested way too much of their identity in their financial success is 100% a Thing That Happens.

@@trevorlamb9324 Well said
@@trevorlamb9324 I mean, the reason is not to inflate prices. The reason is to be the guy standing on the wagon once the wheel has been reinvented, rather than being another random person like the rest of us
The inflated prices are just an additional bad side affect
I just binged watched this entire series twice, right as Gamestop is shuttering the NFT marketplace.

They seem inexperienced, just using a slightly modified unreal engine 5 template and only have a 1 million budget (which is absolutely tiny for AAA game). I wouldn't consider anything under 90million AAA.
I think they're saying that they have AAA experience. But it's more likely to just be marketing, especially because the devs are completely anonymous.

@_osrs the reason for that- roblox game developers are often teenagers who just have a passion to make something fun on a platform they like, not shills who want to gamble with crypto and hope to win big.
The smartest move that the Kiraverse made in terms of blockchain gaming was to remove the blockchain from their game.

Honestly, the most reasonable use case for 'use your NFTs in this game!' would be something like giving the ability to tag a wall with your NFT picture, and use the fact that it is an NFT and can be gated by collection to handle any NSFW concerns that could be associated with that.
Anything more complicated than that is suspicious at best.
But in that space, there is potential to use NFTs. Set them as your character's in-game phone background, put posters on the wall, that sort of thing.
It's not anything that you couldn't do with any import-image feature in the game, but still. Untapped potential.

Wow I actually didn’t notice that, I was too distracted by the nauseating amount of motion blur
It would take work to add the gun to the roll animation. And if they do that, they can't just use the default template roll.

I’m not sure if I’d give a good guess on the next subject! I get most of my information from people like you who’ve done the research for me, while I passively listen during artsy art creating. You, Dan Olson, Münecat, etc? You’re the sleuths and I’m the part of your demographic who listens to the well-compiled records you all created, while I simultaneously scream at a MIDI or Adobe-anything for not reading my mind while I break the things. That’s who I am in your audience, haha. So, without you all, I’d be wholly ignorant and where would the world be then? 🤷🏼♀️🤔😉
I love it when you put Kingdom Hearts and Sonic Adventure ost in your videos, their soundtrack is so nostalgic!
Who wouldn't want to spend 90$ on an ugly skin for a game nobody has heard of? Surely it will be worth the development time.
same type of persons who want spend thousands of $$$ for a hyperlink to jpg
It isn't a game nobody has heard of.. and it's not a skin, it's an nft that you own when ur not even playing the game.
There is hundreds of thousands of people in the param labs discord
@@nxtmxple you are aware you can buy discord members right? online populous is never really a good indicator of popularity. active player count is much better since it is less likely to be influenced by bots. but even then kiraverse has probably around 50 active players if i'm being generous. fortnite is literally just better since it isn't related to scamming people with a jpg. acting like NFTs are still not a scam is being beyond delusional. always love throwing out the word "own" when nothing on the internet is really yours. anybody can just copy paste your NFT anywhere they please with zero repercussions.
@nxtmaple just curious, how many of those users are bots?

9:31 "No ability to choose which drive the game downloads to so I've had to constantly clear my C drive"
A tip for the future if you ever find yourself in a similar situation in the future - use symlinks.
Symlinks are like shortcuts on your desktop except for programs.
1. Find where the game is being downloaded to
2. Pause the download and move every file to a dummy folder on whatever drive you want
3. Create a symlink on that dummy folder
4. Put the symlink on directory where the game is being downloaded to and name it the same way
5. The software now thinks it's using C directory while actually using the D directory you symlinked
I used to have 32GB C drive so I had to use this quite a lot, and it's a very great tool once you get used to it. Almost everything can be symlinked without issues, the only exceptions are system files and drivers.
I actually learned how to do this pretty recently when modding Starfield. It's super useful!
I seriously need to start calling myself a AAAAA developer with the current state of 'AAA' games...
grizzly hills music jumpscared me i was like is my wow open
That Elixir launcher reminds me of the EA app the way you described it, it could be EA’s estranged sibling lmao
two things
I've unironically seen better trailers for VRChat worlds
and this game is so unique looking that UA-cam flagged this video as being about Fortnite
Bro is brainrot
Why would UA-cam flag a video for being about fortnite? You are onto nothing lil bro
@@nxtmxple lol. Stay salty
Edit: you brought up vrchat later in the video. Glad we were on the same page. I am really digging your takes and vibes.
This game makes me appreciate fortnite, this is how deep we've fallen
Joe Mamr seriously approves of this video.
I'm glad you enjoy, Joe!
You for real have serious potential here with this topic. I really do like these videos.
These games are all such shit. Checked out this and decentraland.
You’d have to be a munky to enjoy or especially think others would enjoy these games or amount to anything important at all.
"Like Steam but better" that truly is a lovely joke
since basically every NFT is a pallete swap, you'd only have to make a handful of rigs & animations and just swap out the models/textures - but i doubt the kiravese devs have any idea how to do that.
hell, i'm pretty sure fortnite (and others) use the same rig on every skin so they can animate everything with minimal time wasting.
Lots of NFT collections also slightly change the character pose/location within the JPEG, though, so you might have to tweak texture mapping and UVs for each individual NFT even if the model is the same.
New plan: chess on the blockchain. Every move costs .02 ETH to fit it in among the next batch of exchanges on the ethereum blockchain
honestly impressive that someone somehow made a piece of software less functional than EA's new app, Origin, and Ubisoft Connect combined.
Ragdolls that slump or fly 50ft in the air is actually AAA polish.
As a meltdowner the Martanz jump scare towards the end got me. A year later and he's still the same, lol.
"love the scrolling for change weps" bit killed me
Wow thank you for this incredibly honest and unbiased review. I thank you as a fellow gamer for your hard work at reviewing games. You will be paid $5 for posting this, make sure you delete this last sentence, sincerely, Ken.
Its going to be frickin' wild if you ever run into a game that's improved by this garbage, or at least not made worse. Probably not possible, but I can't believe any developers haven't tried to actually make even at least a mid tier game using them. They are all lazy premade assets, nonexistent gameplay, or both. I've watched all of your videos I had on backlog broski. Keep it up, you are doing God's work!
Damn.. Jauwn really had
Wait i recognize that music anywhere, nice choice! RoR2 has an amazing soundtrack!
'Actually exists' is a rare quality in this space.
If I could prove without a doubt this is 100% an asset flip I would’ve gave this game a much worse score
But they seemingly haven't actually integrated blockchain into it, yet. So it's just a bad normal game at this point.
@@MacWombat Indeed. But a bad normal game without a blockchain is preferable to a standard practice of selling a crypto token while having just a bad website and no game at all.
that the twiglight town theme? that lazy afternoon? you chad!
I will note that $1M in funding for an "AAA" developer at best gets you half a month of work.
On a side note, the concept might be shitty but the fact they adapted the gameboy-ish nft into wearable baby was actually really smart. Give the option to actually change the "default model" who carry the ntf and it's like a really, really well done adaptation into a playable game.
Nfts only exist so you and coffeezilla still have something to post on UA-cam.
Should have made the nft a spraypaint like half-life games
your voice is so soothing. I just turn on your playlist to fall asleep to.
I used to believe nft data transfer was a neat concept. Then I started learning c++ and then I realized it was awfully impossible. Then I saw your videos and I realized: if every game was compatible with nfts, then they would all be one single centralized game.
I love the ROR2 music in the background.
