Update for Social Security recipients: You do not need to file or take action. Social security recipients will automatically get $1200 payments directly to their bank account. The IRS will use the information on the Form SSA-1099 or Form RRB-1099 to generate Economic Impact Payments to recipients of benefits reflected in the Form SSA-1099 or Form RRB-1099 who are not required to file a tax return and did not file a return for 2018 or 2019. This includes senior citizens, Social Security recipients and railroad retirees who are not otherwise required to file a tax return.
Ask Sebby so if the person getting SSI checks every month (a special needs adult)and doesn't file taxes they will still get $1200? How will it impact things (if at all) if that person is claimed as a dependent by their care-giver? Hope that makes sense

You need to talk about seniors on social security. I tried to file but the IRS would not let me file since I had no taxable income.
He had that in the description. You don't have to do anything. You'll automatically get it.
What if the dependent isn’t a child?? I have yet to see anyone explain how dependents over 17 can get a check. Does that older dependent get $1200 too?
I got my direct deposit last night. People who are receiving checks won't get them til May. As for being claimed as a dependent, no sadly you will not receive the money. Im independent & received it. My step sister whose mother claimed her as a dependent (She's 21) will not be receiving anything.

Only if parents file you as a dependent on their tax returns. You can't be penalized or disqualified if your mailing address is the same as your parents.

What if you file as independent on your taxes but you're dependent for college?
Most college students are dependents. In essence, this stimulus bill completely ignores college students/young adults who still live with their parents.

Jim Braun, yes you qualify if you are on social security. You should go on the IRS website and file using turbo tax. Its free. Just have the 1099 paper in front of you so you can answer the questions. (It will tell you what line its on). I just did it last week. It was easy to do. I also heard (but not sure if its correct) that if you are on SS you dont have to file. I filed just to make sure.

BTW: If you did not get a refund, in the form of direct deposit; (they don't have your banking info) you wont receive a check for 4 months. Direct deposits will be sooner.

@@lindahoopes8619 If you have SS direct deposit, they will be automatically sending it to that account. You do not have to apply. Since my original comment; the IRS has stated they will be adding a portal on their (IRS.gov) web site to submit banking info. They are being vague about a timeline. I did read a report that they hope to start on April 13th, and have "most" people paid by the 17th. That's IF they have your banking info.

Sounds like you claimed your relative as a dependent on your taxes, right? Then no, dependents will not receive anything.

I had the same problem. The Way to do it is to download and print it out and mail it in. The IRS computer rejects it if it is zeros on your return. (Electronically)
