In 1949 George Orwell published a novel masterpiece in which the world is ruled by three totalitarianist superstates. The book itself is set in the superstate Oceania. Watch this video to see the history of this dystopian world!
This video is a remake of my other 1984 Every Year video because I thought that it was kinda bad.

Interestingly enough, the book does heavily imply that this system does eventually collapse. The glossary notably refers to “Oceania” in past tense, as if it were a historical document.

I personally like the theory that Oceania and Ingsoc never actually expanded past the British isles, and it's citizens are just made to believe that they did. that would make sense, given the fact that we never get to see what the other parts of Oceania are like, and why we only ever get to see the British isles in the novel, or any of the movies.
This theory is nonsense in my opinion because it diminishes George Orwells original message. It also makes the book less dystopian and therefore weakens the message. Orwell also wrote the novel as a warning to the world, not just Britain. Another thing to add is that there is counter-evidence in the book like the mentioning of Eurasian POWs and Indian tea.
@@rudolfus165 Yes, also the evidence of bombings seem to make it seem like they fell from continental Europe, something that Eurasia controls and that happened in WW2, as the nations seem to be using WW2 equipment and tactics
@@rudolfus165 I think it increases the meaning of his message. A government with such total control over its people that it can just say they're at war and people don't even question it. Another thing that makes it plausible is that Winston never mentions having to do military service which feels like something he should have brought up at least once. A nation such as Oceania would require a HUGE army but conscription or service is never mentioned once.
@@amaritineenthusiast If only Britain were to be controlled by INGSOC, the doctrine "war is peace" would also not work, because there would be no enemies to fight with. And other than just adding another example of propaganda this theory would also not enhance the dystopia of the book but rather diminish it. There is also no textual evidence whatsoever, and this theory is insanely boring.
@@rudolfus165 Sure I myself thought the theory sort of made the entertainment side of the book diminish but at the end of the day the book isn't purely for entertainment it's to push a message about totalitarianism. Like I said a government that can tell people it controls the entirety of two continents and many parts of others and have people just agree without questioning it is terrifying in itself. Like it says in the book, if the party says 2+2=5 then that's it, there's no second party to say it's not true, atleast not one that's real.
Take it this way: Someone comes into your house and tells you he's just put a bomb in every room of the house. You cannot see the other rooms but he tells you that if you open the door it will blow the bombs up so you can never find out. Eventually you'd just submit and stop trying to find a way out. One day the police barge through and you find out there was no bomb and you wasted years of your life sitting in a room. I find the person who can manipulate you into thinking you'll die if you leave more terrifying than someone who can.

the fact that the book was written in the past, takes place in the past which was a distant future at the time it was written and mentions the future (2050) is a little scary, I think that.
When does the book mention 2050?

Orwell did not write about the communists, but about the government of his country, which he hated.

Definitely the best dystopian novel of all time, and just one of the best novels in general
Don’t remember where I read this theory, but it’s one of the more hopeful ones for 1984.
It basically says that since the book is treated as a piece of the past, and isn’t written about in terms of Newspeak, that the party could have potentially failed in its goal or even collapsed after some time. I don’t remember if that was the theory entirely, but it’s nice to see a more optimistic view of the book.

Not by a long shot. Far worse, actually. The whole fight according to the book is for the populations of those areas. The only resource each nation doesn't have a pretty much unlimited supply of is human beings, so they fight for those highly populated areas. There are still a few plotholes and ideas, but that's the gist of it. You're a slave who's constantly being shipped to other countries or forced to work.

I think that the 1956 movie version is in some ways better than the 1984 movie. Anthony Burgess also wrote a book entitled 1985 in which he did an analysis of the book and presented an alternative scenario which was very interesting.
I read this book completely blind.
I didn’t know anything about it, I liked Animal Farm and wanted to read something else by the Author.
I struggle to find words to describe the book other than by saying it didn’t feel like a book it felt like the world’s most Perfect Nightmare.
It’s like sitting through a scary movie as a kid, it freaked you out but afterwards you felt a little tougher.
1984 is like that, it was a nightmare that made me feel stronger after getting through it.

I haven't read the book but here is my ideas about the politics of this world: Eurasia tried to spread communism into China but Ocenia prevented this by supporting the Chinese death movement. It seems Eurasia and Ocenia are fighting in Africa and Asia while Ocenia and East Asia are fighting in Indonesia.
This is wrong. East Asia was not even involved in the Eurasia-Oceania conflict. It was formed as a result of many revolutions in Asian countries

It is not known much about this ideology but it is assumed that it is some kind of death worship in the sense that there is nothing more heroic than dying for the party

You don't need to truly annex it, you simply need to bring it under your sphere of influence. The nations with less economic and political power will follow the more powerful one. This was seen already in history with the Warsaw Pact nations and NATO being the most recent.

@mrsillytacos Realistically their weapons should be at least slightly better than WWII levels (Porto-assault rifles becoming the norm as was the trend by the end of WWII with the sturmghewer and the AK-47) a few aircraft improvements (normalization/integration of early jet tech pioneered by the Germans and studied by the Brit’s at the end of the war), standardization of ballistic missiles (again, German rocketry developments plus nuke delivery), early helicopter designs were being developed by the Japanese by the end of the pacific theater means more likely than not they’d exist in at least rudimentary forms. You’d be surprised how advanced military tech was getting by the end of WWII, and even if tech refinement ceased soon after the war ended (unlikely), the already existing tech could be mass produced and standardized, maybe tweaked in minor ways, which would radically change combat from anything seen in our world (Korea might be a close parallel for the style of warfare based on tech though).
