Thank you so much. I love those classic freighters. Sad that so many of them are no longer with us. It was my youth to ride my bicycle to the Detroit River to see them sail by. Again thanks!

Thank you for watching! I never used to film them because I thought they’d be around for generations.

They are just like people, they grow old and pass away and unfortunately nothing can replace any of them.

Thanks so much for posting these. Those grand old ladies are a part of my soul. I'll never get tired of seeing those, it takes me home again (without having to feel the cold! 😉).

#16 Thanks for showing! Many, many years ago I sailed the C&O, B&O Railroad Ferries as a crew member and pulled wheel relief for the AB so he could take a break or dinner. Including the present SS Badger 43. It was a wonderful time in my young life. I also worked on the Ann Arbor Railroad Ferries, also!

Thank you for watching!! Wish there was ferries to see on the Detroit and St Clair rivers now. Maybe this summer I’ll take my wife on the Badger, before that disappears too!

I remember back in the day, when Bob-Lo Island was open to the public. I would take the 10:00 am boat to Bob-Lo Island the names of the boats were the Columbia and Ste.Claire. We would pass a lot of freighters on the Detroit River. I would come back to Detroit on the Moonlight cruise, when the Bob-Lo Island would close for the day. We would also pass alot,of freighters on the way back to Detroit.
Those were the good old days.

Think of the Great Lakes like a Highway. Their are ships for carrying Cargo, and their are boats for personal and recreational uses.

Amazing how many of these ships show signs of rough handling, with the missing paint, scratches, scrapes and bruises.

    • @1Long2Short
      @1Long2Short 5 років тому +1

Not really rough handling... just decades of use. You can't dock a ship like this or take it through the locks without making contact with the walls. Plus, they have to break their way through ice in the during the colder months. Now multiply that by the thousands of times these ships have made trips in the 50-70 years they have been active.

As a Brit having sailed the local Sea's I am fascinated by the Shape of the ships on the Great Lakes of the north America's About How they evolved to be as they are ???

It was thought to be easier for the crew to navigate the rivers if the wheelhouse was up from. Most Great Lakes vessels were built this way up unit the early 1970’s

Absolutely wonderful footage. Nice to see the Lower Lakes ships that we rarely get in the Duluth-Superior area. If you don't mind sharing, what camera and lens are you using for your videos?

    • @ScottTaipaleRail

Thank you! I was using a Panasonic HC-V750 at the time. I now have the new model 981 as well as my main camera the Panasonic HC-X1. Any of these ships are a long drive for me, I live 90 miles south of Lake Erie but enjoy seeing them so long drives are routine!

@@ScottTaipaleRail Thanks for sharing your camera details. The results you're getting are very sharp and have excellent color. I'm 165 miles from Duluth, so I can definitely empathize about long drives to see ships!

  • @MrGator-er1li

Algoma is cheap. they treat their vessels like garbage, 90% of them are in bad condition when it comes to rust, and a lot of them are pretty new to be that rusty.
