This being an Italian Rpg inspired by Japanese rpgs and then translated into English amuses me.

You might be less amused if you were familiar with the Kalergi Plan, of which this is one more sinister manifestation. It is not generally known but in one of the Plan’s chapters is a detailed description of how foreigners, in one of their many fiendish ways of bringing about the extinction of the white race, will create and distribute TTRPG’s emanating - sometimes indirectly - from Asia and Africa, to be consumed by a credulous woke audience who have no idea that in so doing they are ingesting the seeds of their own cultural - and eventually physical - destruction. Only a few sages, all now cancelled by the liberal media or otherwise suppressed and ridiculed, know the truth.

Woot! A nine on the Grim scale is a home run! I'm currently running a solo campaign of Fabula Ultima (using Four Houses in Chaos as the oracle) and I'm having a blast. The toolkit nature of the game is a big plus in my book since I get to run the world that I want. Given the vast diversity of JRPG space, a single setting would have been a disservice in my humble opinion. The High Fantasy Atlas (more jobs, locations, optional systems, etc.) is out now and Techno Fantasy is estimated for the end of the year.

Very enjoyable game. Bodyguard to cover (guard) an ally and Counterattack to punish enemies.
The DM was genuinely shocked when my rapier wielding brave knight parry and riposted a small squad of goons. Montblanc wasn't the Last Duellist of the Seven Seas for nothing. ⚔

This is one of my bucket list games. I have it. It's on my shelf. The trick is getting my group together to try it.
I don't know if I would say that the design of Fabula Ultima is opposed to sandbox play. I think it could work. It's just that the GM would be heavily encouraged to tie the characters' backgrounds and bonds, as well as an overarching villain into the places they go. It is a bit more prep-heavy on the GM in that regard, I guess. I still wanna try it though. I love the mixed stat checks and the combined Accuracy checks and damage calculation.
I will also say that the bestiary and GM resources are...okay, I guess? There could have easily been a few more monsters and random tables for the GM to use. The few that are there are decent enough, and as for world and event generation, that's why I have The Perilous Wilds supplement for Dungeon World.

I have this game, haven't played it yet but it does have the whimsical quality of the JRPG games which is evoked by the art and the rules.
Based on what I have read so far of the rules it does feel like you are playing JRPG's like Dragon Quest.

I was thinking about running this. I’m going to be using Demon Star for some inspiration as well. It’s an Into the Odd type, based on JRPGs like Phantasy Star, so I think they could work together somehow. Great review.

PS - Forgot to mention the author of Demon Star made the entire game free as a pdf preview on Drive Thru. It has a “SAMPLE” watermark across the page, but hey, free. I liked so I bought a print copy.

I played it a little, I enjoyed it. I feel like the 'stack 'em up' approach to classes lent itself to a unique character feel and there's a tremendous amount of 'Mydudeism' in the book which works out. Sort of a lovely (if perhaps a bit gamey at times) experience, lent itself to roleplay which was nice. Would honestly be interested to see what your girls would make of it if you ran them thru a session.

Interesting sub-genre I never really had the opportunity to explore, but that release does seem to evoke it well

+1 for SwordWorld. Once you get past the formatting and procedure mind set its flow is smooth.

Great video. I enjoy the game I only have one small thing that bothered me, to play with the concept of "Limit Breaks" from FFVII I did have to purchase the Atlas called "Zero Powers". I did not mind purchasing the extra book, I just feel that the title made it hard for someone to know it was another source of optional rules.

I am curious, what other games have received a similar 9.5 or higher score? I can't remember any.

I love the vibe of this game, and I hear it's based on Ryuutama. Have you checked that one out?
Watching the exchange between tabletop and crpg's, especially jrpg's, over the years has been fascinating. One inspires the other which in turn inspires the one. I do think that duplicating either one in the other medium is always challenging. What works in one can be very boring in the other and vice versa. This looks fun tho.

The reason we don't have the translated-from-Japanese Dark Souls TRPG is because the person who made the Japanese Dark Souls TRPG HATES western game companies.
