  • Today I will show you how to make a Magnetic/Whiskey Compass that works with FSX! This uses a 28byj-48 stepper motor with an Arduino Mega 2560 via a program called MobiFlight. This likely can be used with X-Plane, but I have not tested it yet.

    Hello there Captain Bob, i I love your content and made my firts hardware, the whisky compass. It needs some finetuning, because it was off a couple of degrees today, but the test worked! Keep it up!

      Fantastic! I'm so glad you got it to work! To tweak the degrees, you can add a few more steps to the rotation. I hope the rest of your cockpit goes well!

    Captain
    Captain Bob. Built
    the compass. It exceeded my expectations after completion. Wish I could send you a picture of it on top of my C172 cockpit. Really adds to realism. I have a suggestion for you. In some of your videos you show build and then installation/setup/calibration of a component into FSX utilizing MobiFlight. Recommend
    you make a new video showing setup, calibration, etc in FSX. Again, great job!

      Thanks for your comment! If you want to send a picture, you can send it to CaptainBobSim@gmail.com

      What do you mean by: "video showing setup, calibration, etc in FSX"?
      Happy Landings!

    Hi Captain Bob, Thanks for all of you videos, great job. Great to see such a young man so invested in the hobby. I am old (66) but only about 3 years into flightsim. I am building a home cockpit loosely based on Beachcraft B200. I have just entered into the world of Arduino and Mobiflight and thought the Whisky Compass would be a great first project. I have it all connected and configured as per your video. My problem is that the stepper motor runs constantly, sometimes counter clock wise and other times clockwise. Also I cannot seem to make it stop, however, it will stop on its own. Also, the line in Moboflight that you check "Active" flashes rapidly , constantly. I opened MSFS2020 C172 but it does not mimic the compass in the sim. I am sure that I have must have done something wrong but after several reviews I cannot identify the cause or error. Any ideas on this issue would be appreciated
    Thanks.

    • @CaptainBobSim
      @CaptainBobSim  2 роки тому +1

      Hey Kevin! I think the problem might have been that you pressed the "TEST" function instead of the "RUN" function. The TEST function is useful if you have a lot of devices and want to check they all work, the RUN function connects it to flight simulator.

      I haven't released this code. You'll have to look at the code for my latest heading indicator and adapt it to the mag compass. My next version will include code.

    Regarding the face where the supports were: If you need it to be cosmetically good, you could plan for it and make that face thinner, then make a flat piece to fit inside the shroud on the front to neaten it up.

  • @jalmaripipo
    @jalmaripipo 4 роки тому +1

    I just wonder how the compass knows the first heading? When you start your computer how do you turn the heading to same direction as in FSX? Is there a calibrating process or how?

    • @CaptainBobSim
      @CaptainBobSim  4 роки тому

      You can twist it manually to the heading (not recommended) or calibrate it digitally in the Display tab under Manual Calibration, then set the position to zero. After it is calibrated, it typically stays (in my experience)

    hello captain bob
    a question, how do you do to synchronize every time you start the sim, the physical compass with the simulator compass? can you explain the process please

    • @CaptainBobSim
      @CaptainBobSim  3 роки тому

      Hello, MobiFlight has a feature. It is best explained in the release video: ua-cam.com/video/QgJvUhAH1gc/v-deo.html You could have this hit a button or use an infrared detector or other sensor. Hopefully this helps!

    Bonsoir de la FRANCE et Bonne année 2010 , Bravo pour ton montage , je débute sur un simulateur de vol d'un avion Beechraft 200 , il me manque les elements de control des moteurs , je pence il faudra investir sur graveur et une impriment 3D ?
