  • Arvo Pärt is regarded as one of today’s most original creators of music. Many of his compositions are bound up with sacred texts and have a shimmeringly mystical, devotional quality, underscored by the use of Renaissance harmonizations, medieval melodic techniques, the music of the Eastern Orthodox Church and Gregorian chant. The film features a performance of Pärt’s luminously beautiful "Te Deum" given by the choir and the Tallinn Chamber Orchestra conducted by the charismatic conductor Tõnu Kaljuste. It was recorded at the Church of St. Nicholas in Tallinn.
From the documentary "Voices Still in Time - Images of Estonian Music: Arvo Pärt".

I'm so glad this is back up on youtube. It got taken down some time ago but now it's back and I'm so happy. I think I've probably listened to this piece four dozen times and each time the solemnity and fragrance of its harmony never ceases to remind me of the Holy Spirit

Tonu Kaljuste is so completely inside this Praise... Poetry in magnificence in the highest order... Carthatic, electrifying, tonic, blessing, cosmic and near, unbound and ethereal....... A picture of limping humanity, by a mystifying grace, offering fruits to the King of Immensity and Compassion. God allows this, to stoop to His children and weep with them... until they laugh.

This piece for me is highest musical expression of a mystical experience and the meaning of the text. I discovered the piece through these performers' CD back in 1993, and its impact has never diminished.

His music is always so beautifully ethereal!
I hope everyone has heard of the recently reported research on the inborn musical aptitude of infants. At two days, infants react if there's a missing downbeat. And, as soon as they can control their muscles, they move in time to music.
Music is truly our native language. Its universality is one of many reasons it was so important to the real Shakespeare, who was said to have a professional level of proficiency in music. And he used musical tropes more than any contemporary playwrights, with word play on both the literal meaning; as well as the technical musical meaning.

Thanks very much for this! Great presentation.
If I may suggest, add a minute of the applause at the end. I always like hearing the acknowledgement of the audience.
