The topology is most likely a display bug, my USW-A is connected to my USW-Flex using an original Ubiquiti SFP with a CAT6 line and is shown correctly.
Nice! I don't know about the rest of the people but I kinda love it when content creators start falling down the homelab rabbit hole specially since your constrains right off the bat make this more interesting: it's not your typical "Stick recycled loud and hot recycled servers in a basement" since you're basing it on your apartment. I hope this video does well and encourages you to do more of em.
Wow.. I was just about to go down a home network wormhole and figure out how I could do it in my house, then this video pops up!!! Perfect timing and amazing video/content as always, thank you 🙏🏾🔥
right now ubiquiti has a few items on sale from their website also many places match prices. if you are only going to have 2 poe items then the udm pro will work perfectly its only $279. if you are going to have more than that the UDM SE is the best bet. Super easy to setup. i ihave 3 ap doorbell and 2 cameras . all works incredibly well.
Another great Unifi Vid. We’ve got all new Ubiquiti gear going into our new home and can’t wait to put it all together. U6-Lite, UDM Pro, 24 Port USW, Flex Minis and a few cameras too. All work together so well, it’s a no brainer going Ubiquiti
They do make 10Gbase-T transcievers that will do 80m over cat6. You can even get them from 10Gtek. They're Broadcom based as opposed to Marval that's used in 30m transceivers. As a result, they run a bit cooler and consume less power. Heat is something you will want to be careful of with all copper transceivers in general. Also be careful about sticking any copper xcvers in adjacent ports because they tend to run slightly large and sometimes they will get stuck in the cages.
There is now even a newer Broadcom chipset that FS has been producing SFP+'s that support up to 100 meters. The newer Broadcom chips also consume less power at max 1.8 watts instead of max 2.3 on the older chips.
@@0bsmith0, yep. I recently just converted a handfull of 10G copper xcvrs to the new 100m variant because I've been chasing lower thermal ratings in my highly packed QFX switches. I do wish my systems folk would just switch to SMF or at the very least MMF. I'm tired of being worried about hot spots in my access switches.
Luckily I do enough of this at work and someone else pays for it. I keep my home network super simple and cheap. Also there isn’t much point to a sick home network when it’s only fed by a 40/20 VDSL connection. You’ve done a great job.
What about the sound and the cooling of all of this in the cabinet rack . Just curious on how you manage this ? I have also an Udm and 24 ports but the sound can be disturbing when we have hot period
Great video! Revamping my home network as well. Just need to wait for my ubiquiti hardware to get here. Had to use multiple inventory trackers for weeks to finally place an order
Any problems regarding heat?Thought that when using a few sfp/RJ45 adapters in the aggregation may cause trouble?? I am thinking about buying aggregation switch to deliver to RJ45 (like you showed in topography)
Nice setup. I love my Unifi Wifi APs, but don't have the 6, yet. I would love to upgrade my network with Ubiquiti switches, but then my wife would yell at me for spending too much money on tech.
hi mate, thanks for the amazing video. I recently got my UDM SE, and I try to connect it to my NBN box, but UDM shows cannot get IP, did you have this issue before?😪
I didn’t understand around 80% of what you talked about but really respect the dedication to a home network. I’ve recently started my own business and I live in the same area as you Nick; don’t worry I won’t dox you. I’m struggling to find a good off the shelf solution for extending my wifi. Is mesh wifi any good or should I just get a cheap extender? Anyone know of affordable and reliable solutions for extending wifi in a relatively large apartment?
@@mmmMarkyyyy Mesh is good if you can’t be bothered. If you care about latency and if you have largish number of devices, nothing beats a nice deployment like this. (Ubiquity UniFi / TP Link Omada or Cisco Meeraki, if you cashed out your bitcoins before the crash 😝).
Great video mate! Super informative. I have a very similar set-up and I've been looking for a rack exactly like what you have but I've been struggling to find one. You wouldn't happen to remember where you got it from?
Sweet looking network setup fams. I would love to setup something similar (not as complicated) in my house. Love the video, keep up the hard work. Keen to see more networking videos
hi like the video great job.Just about to add G4 doorbell and 2 camera only problem i have a UDM .Not sure which way to go add a CKG2 plus to run protect or UDM pro or SE. Whichever route will be more cost effective any idea?
Sorry but I wouldn't put the APs on the UDM SE integrated switch as the link between this switch and the router backplane is only 1G, hence limiting your overall AP bandwidth...
Wireless one had an ebay sale that bought Down udm pro se to just ~700 Aud. Missed it! Looking to upgrade my udm (in anticipation for the FTTN to FTTP upgrade happening in our neighborhood!).
@@GearSeekers Sweet, armed with that knowledge I found it, free posting I might add, I have a similar setup as yours for the 10Gbe, I really enjoyed your video.
Hey mate, just found your channel - great video!! Can I ask about the kit you used to install the rack mounted gear - I found the Ubiquiti units sagged a little bit at the rear without support, can you recommend anything that I could use to support each unit in the rack? Thank you!!
Hey Calum. Haven't really encountered this issue too much. It may be because I use rackstuds and not rack nuts to mount my gear. Maybe give rackstuds a try :)
@@GearSeekers Ah okay, i'll def try them - thanks mate! I don't know if there are many other people who are interested in smaller hardware details, but it would be great if you could touch on them in your videos. Thanks again!
I went with the dream machine pro, I have FTTP getting around the same speed as you depending on the time. (Superloop) I bought the dream machine pro before the SE was out. It sucks having to get PPOE injectors as they look messy… I have 2 access points the AC Pro V2 and the U6-LR, I’ve had no issues at all with my setup great gear. 👍🏽
The setup is great...but it's hard to call something the "ULTIMATE HOME NETWORK" when it's a single router, single switch, and single aggregation switch. You could literally do all of it with just the UDMSE and Aggregation switch, actually.
You'll need to do a port reset on the NTD. With AussieBB you can do it in their app. Not sure how to do it with other ISPs. You can also try a factory reset of the UDM (sounds weird but it does work) or SSH in to it and set the time manually. If there is a mismatch in time sometimes it won't get an IP from your ISP. The fix that worked for me was the port reset in the MyAussie App
I love it!, i've been looking into a full home network rework & this pops up. You rock dude, you've been smashing it lately with these videos.

why havent you mounted the ap points in the roof for best signal distribution in the rooms, they are 180 degree beam on them!

Didn’t you had a tplink 5port 10ge that you bought for your network?
Yep and all 3 ended up dead after a year
Fibre to the curb. Copper to the premises at my location. I can only wish NBN will upgrade.
Max 50mbs 😢

Is there a screen under your Modem? I wonder whats that for :)
