Why Ford Stopped Making Cars In India

  • In 2021, Ford stopped making cars in India. With the market there being mostly dominated by two-wheelers, Ford lost approximately $2 billion in its India business, prompting the company to begin slowing down its operations. General Motors has also experienced similar issues finding success in the country. These problems are due in large part to different needs in the market and predictions not panning out as anticipated, which leads companies like Ford and GM to pull back and focus more on profitability.

Always nice to have more competition but I think companies like Ford, GM and even Toyota to an extent have failed to come up with the kinds of cars that are preferred in India. Kia came to India only a couple of years ago and they're killing it here with their SUVs because they understand the market. Local manufacturers like Tata and Mahindra are also offering very compelling products nowadays. If an Indian manufacturer is able to match or exceed the level of quality and reliability of a foreign manufacturer, I'm obviously going to buy from the Indian manufacturer. Foreign companies need to innovate more to keep up. I'd never buy a Volkswagen for instance because the models they bring to India are years behind the ones they sell in the rest of the world in terms of features, safety, etc. It feels like such companies couldn't care less about India and are only here to make quick profits by selling junk. Case and point, just take a look at the Polo that they sell in India vs the Polo they sell in Europe.

@@rupesh1508 Not sure if you're being sarcastic but I have driven European cars. The only ones worth buying are luxury cars (which are always about low volume, high price so most people wouldn't buy them) and even then there are more affordable alternatives. Take a look at the Polo GT that they sell outside India vs what they sell in India. There's no way I'm buying that TRASH for that price. Indian automakers like Tata and Mahindra have actually come a long way in providing affordable, roomy and comfortable cars. You should try them out before you comment. Also, not everyone cares for these "driving dynamics" as much as they do about fuel efficiency, space, interior quality, features, after sales support, reliability and so on. I feel sorry that you have such a simplistic motion for what a car should be. What are these Chinese cars that you speak of?

It's Ford's fault. They treated India as some 3rd world poverty stricken nation and sold outdated or lower scale models. They failed to see the statistics of how many German marques & other luxury brands are sold there. Indians are a very brand conscious lot (while being price conscious). If you treat them like some slumdogs they recognize it and reject you outrightly. When Ford entered India, the Indians expected brands like the Mustangs, Lincolns, the Iconic pickup trucks, etc. Instead Ford dumped some outdated cheap entry level car models and expected them to sell. Indians saw through this as an insult and rejected the brand completely. This is the reason why Mercedes, BMWs are selling in huge numbers there, because they launch the latest models. Audi got into trouble when the market there realized that Audi too was dumping rejected low quality cars (including Lamborghinis), even after selling a good lot of those supercars.

The bread and butter models are between 6 to 30lakhs. Ford never did anything to bolster their model line up. They had success with the first figo, ecosport. Then squandered it... So not launching expensive lifestyle vehicle wasn't fords undoing, not updating model line up, not launching models that indian wanted was their undoing. True global automakers are Hyundai Group (Hyundai, Kia) and Toyota.
They, AFAIK are in every major market (India, Europe, Americas) and have decent market shares in each of those markets.
Why? Because they are re-inventing themselves for every market. In India, they sell cars from $5000 to around $40000, which gives an entry point into the brand at multiple price points (like Samsung). Toyota meanwhile captured with the One Model to rule them all strategy (like Apple) with extremely successful Innova, Etios models.
This shows that if you put your honest effort and energy, you can be. But Ford and GM were trying to Americanize the Indian market and those huge, bulky, expensive and laggy-software cars just don't sell well in a densely populated nation like India.

Not to mention my pet theory which is "lemons" are always shipped to dev countries (not just lemon vehicles but anything mechanical seems to always have defects in these countries, it's as if the manufacturers ship the rejects destined for developed countries to undeveloped countries; I'm pretty sure this is true but it's hard to prove and mainstream media doesn't report on this).

They had to reduce presence in Japan and other Asian countries as well, whereas Japanese and Korean automakers like Suzuki, Hyundai, Kia, Honda, Nissan and Toyota are increasing their presence day by day. Owner of a 2015 Ford Figo TDCi Trend here.
Ford in terms of safety is underrated. My brother, dad and mom were in the car when facing a side on by a lorry. Lorry took away the side mirror and dented the side heavily. Any Swift to i10 would have rolled over. But due to the weight distribution in Figo and its heavy durable materials, the car got away with a huge dent and a headlamp pop.
Ford never tried to sell an affordable version of cars like the Taurus, Mondeo or Fusion. Even the Falcon could have made a mark. There is a reason why Honda City sells like Hot Cakes in India and one reason is its affordability.
Had Ford ever tried to get some quality sedans at a bracket of 13-26L, they could have had a better competition. Yes, I know about the Fiesta, but they were too quick with the Fiesta. It was overpriced when it came out in 2011, starting at 10L I think.
Ford management literally treated India like a 3rd class country. We had to wait 10 years for a single Endeavour facelift and 12 for a Figo facelift. Ford never tried the Indian market thoroughly.

Ford needed to understand, DON'T SELL OLDER CARS AND MODELS IN INDIA! That's al there is.... They could have introduced Ford Raptor and manufactured Mustang locally and trust me we would have bought them!
Look at KIA, they introduced the older version of Carnival and it wasn't well received. Seltos was and is popular as it is a new car. People are looking forward to cars like Palisade, Skoda Slavia, Elantra (facelift) because we are not a country which will buy cars blindly. We want all the modern luxuries and amenities in cars that are sold in Europe or US.
Ford took us for granted way too long.
Plus majority of their service centers were focused on making people spend money on unnecessary repairs and parts. We can get the same thing done at a local garage for 1/4th the price.

As of 9 December Seltos, Duster, Creta, XUV700, Scorpio, Thar, Hector, Safari, Harrier, Alcazar are below 17L on an average. These are the best selling Suvs in India.

The fact is US companies may shout about innovation but are not innovative. Innovation is the name now given to following what others are doing and what your bosses want you to do. Actual innovation in name of products is zero. Ford, GM and the grand 3 of US automobile would not have existed today in US too if the socialistic govt bailout was not there for them. American corporates talk about market forces but are not able to handle the same.
Yes India and many of the developing countries are Price sensitive, didn't the Ford or GM bosses knew about it before going in. If not then they should not hold on to their seats and if yes then why they were not ready to adapt according to the market condition. Ford and GM thinks that they can change the consumer behaviour but they must remember the famous saying in Capitalistic society that "Customer is the King".
Who would pay for a inferior product compared to Japanese cars at a premium just because they are huge toys to boost ego. Remember when Honda and Toyota would be giving ads for 40 MPG ford and GM would say it had revolutionized fuel consumption with just 35mpg. No one would buy that kind of brouhaha in a consumer is king market.

Sadly, every company operates with the idea of always expanding, always growing, always making the balance sheets have bigger numbers and making investors happy. Some of the big companies should worry more about making a quality product and customer loyalty in the markets they have and less about expanding. The idea of expanding into a market where people care more about the price of a ride, rather than the badge or the perceived lifestyle that the brand will provide (like in the US) was pretty silly. Ford really sh*t the bag with Indian market. There were a bunch of problems with their approach from the get go.

I owned a Ford Ikon for some time, the car was incredibly powerful. But the mileage… damn, it would give me 8-10 km/l which was on par with one of the worst mileages you can get.
Also finding parts was an issue. I was literally turned down by an official ford dealership saying that they stopped making the car so they dont have spares anymore. Had to search a ton and acquire it from black market.

I think Ford miss read the Indian market, it should have focused on selling niche brands like Mustang and Suv like Explorer to a niche audience. Rather than getting into price sensitive low cost car where it had no chance to compete with Maruti In India. Hyundai is 2nd position but is still struggling to keep up. Maruti Suzuki has the advantage of having the largest service network in any part of India. It is low on cost and yet sturdy. Indians dont lease cars they have to pay high interest rates on car loans and average Indian salary is low depending on 1 persons earning in the family, combine all that with expensive real estate market in cities with high interest rates on Housing loans and ever increasing fuel cost. The people who cant afford to buy new car buy resale cars which can be easily repaired by the roadside mechanic, so inshort Indian car market is complicated for American car manufacturers if they don't understand the psychology of Indian car buyers.

Price sensitivity isn't a minus but a plus; good for India, and Asian car makers. Ford leaving the Indian market was also a mistake

8:13 Although Holden of GM Australia had manufactured cars for 70 years, it IS more than 1½ centuries old _(founded in 1856, shut down in 2021)._

well we do have a preference for suv's as joint family vehicles. that's the reason why innova was so popular. i think the major problem was price. they could've sustained their business by just capturing the joint family market if their prices were competitive enough for the Indian middle class. companies like kia & morris garage hector are doing something similar in India. capturing different segments individually.

Compared to the Americans the Germans and Czechs have done a great job. Skoda, seems to be the trump card for VW group . It's been here for almost 20 years and still sells well. With the new Slavia and Kushaq coming in, Skoda is expected to perform really well. For most Indians, a Mercedes,Volvo or BMW is beyond dreams, the best they can aspire for is a Skoda.
