Time: 3 hours
Cost: $100
Skill Level: Moderate
Tools List for Repairing a Paver Walkway:
Trowel
Shovel
Buckets
Level
Tamper
Rubber hammer
Push broom
Shopping List:
Stone pack
Stone dust
Concrete
Steps:
1. Examine the walkway. If the pavers have moved around but the base appears relatively firm, it might just be a freeze/thaw issue. If it appears that the pavers caved in, there’s a good chance it was damage by chipmunk tunnels. Keep this in mind while working on the walkway.
2. Before moving any of the pavers, take a picture of the pattern laid out.
3. Remove the pavers and place them carefully out of the way. It helps to lay them down in the same layout they were originally in.
4. Scrape away any soil that has grown between the pavers.
5. Fill in any gaps with pack until the base of the walkway is level with the rest of the walkway. Use the tamper to pack everything down.
6. Level the top of the gaps with stone dust until the base is completely level and compact it using the tamper.
7. Relay all the pavers in order, starting from the point furthest from the walkway and working back in. Refer to the picture as necessary. Use the level to ensure each paver is level with the walkway. Use the rubber hammer to lower and pavers that might be sticking up.
8. Sprinkle stone dust on top of the patch and work it in between the gaps of all the pavers with the push brush.
9. If the damage from the walkway was caused by chipmunks, protect the sides of the walkway by digging a hole on both sides of the walkway.
10. Fill both holes with concrete, then backfill with soil.
Resources:
All the materials Roger used, including the rubber hammer, stone dust, and concrete, can all be found at home centers and landscape supply stores.
About Generation Next:
This Old House’s Generation NEXT initiative shines a light on the urgent need for young people to enter the building trades and fill the skills gap in America today. “There’s a critical need for people in home construction,” says the This Old House master carpenter Norm Abram. The initiative has involved recruiting apprentices-some with no skills, some with a few years under their tool belts-to work alongside the TOH TV pros.

I wish I could be Roger's apprentice. He has so much knowledge and experience. And that heavy Boston accent - you gotta love that.
I absolutely love this idea about generation next. I'm an apprentice right now and I'm learning quite a bit from my journeymen. Please keep up these segments this is a great idea.
Since buying my first house a year ago, Ive watched so many of these TOH videos. Such a good resource and super smart guys. I really appreciate that these skills are being passed on, because I would bet most people just dont even want to do these types of things anymore
All my childhood heroes are looking worn out. Richard, Tom, Roger, i know you guys arent burned out yet but i wish you a happy retirement when the time comes.
They look good
Exactly what I was thinking, you can just see how this has worn out their bodies but they're still going strong.
Thank all of y’all, I’m 50 now and have been watching the show for almost as long all the things each one of the guys have shown me how to do over each of the years. All that can be said is Thanks guys for all the work LOL my wife thanks you even more.
Not normally a fan of these style of pavers, but geez they look good when they're laid properly. Great job guys
I'm having this exact issue with chipmunks and went to This Old House for solid no nonsense advice; mission accomplished, Thanks guys!
It's sad to see these guys getting older.
For sure
i thought so too :(
I was thinking the same thing. Roger is looking a bit rough in this vid!
Michael Durkin - Was thinking the same. Mobility is not there as much as in past years. Such a bummer!
Hope Roger is doing ok. Years take a toll on the body.
The best video ive seen. Truely, no nonscence. I had a chipmunk problem with my paver step to the porch all sunken in. I pulled every brick and went step by step. Its perfect. Thank you guy!
I love that This Old House has fully embraced modem media like UA-cam. Lots of great stuff here! Including this! 😁😁
i've been watching these guys for so long they feel like old friends. Roger is looking a little rough, i hope there is nothing wrong.
Same here
Glad we have some young MEN following in the footsteps of these guys
Man Roger has always been one of my favorites and he always seem so big and strong, weird to see father time stops for no one, I haven't seen the show in a while that's why.
Grew up watching this old house in British sky TV, loved every episode. So sad to see them aging and going slower. Time is bastard.
Though great to see them training up some youngsters. Hopefully this old house will be here for many more years.
Great to see Roger again.
Excellent work by an experienced professional. What a treat to look over a masters shoulder. Ol' Corey did well too.
When I retire, I need to be on this show as an apprentice. This is the life.
Man, Roger is starting to remind me of my old man. Especially once he busted out that phone!
Same here.
Roger, you are such a great guy, and I love you very much!
I'm worried about Roger. I hope he gets better soon.
Roger doesn't look well. Get well soon. My best wishes.
What are you talking about? He looks fine. About 40ish?
Samsng Device but he’s 20
Great VIDEO, nice to see the trades passed down.
Take a picture!
I have random photos of things on my phone but they're all of stuff I've taken apart/repaired at work. I know if I take a picture I can get it back together. 👍👍
This looks like such a fun job
Roger is a legend
Roger is aging kind quick now. 😔 The trades are going to be in trouble when all the old school pros like Roger, Tom, Richard.. Etc.. Retire out
I was thinking the same thing. Roger seems to moving very slowly nowadays. Sad to see. Hope he enjoys a lot days on his fishing boat during retirement!
Ike Costner that's ok more money for those of us whom own companies that were tought by our old timer fathers
Kevin can take over
ive been waching since i was a little kid,, there all starting to show there age a little
Not to worry. Our generation will build robots to handle manual labor
Love the flip phone! Didn’t know they still made those :)
James Roach There are touchscreen ones too
They dont its an artefact
ua-cam.com/video/ikOTe8_K7WY/v-deo.html Super rugged, too.
I love how Roger is self aware about how he's still the only one of the four [or five if you include Ross] that still doesn't use a smartphone.
Wish Roger was my teacher.
I have a similar issue I rant into today on a paver repair around a pool. I’m really bad sunken shape. I remove one of the paver blocks to look under and I poked the stone dust and a fist size was hollow hole about 2-3 feet down. I was wondering how that could happen. I thought maybe, bad back fill. But now this makes sense.
"alright Corey"
Man , I would sooo cherish to work for these guys and help like Cory gets to lol....
Cool show I watch it all the time
I like watching this show
Roger looks sick.
Now that is how you make a teaching video
Hahaha I love that old school phone.. such a legend
Dang chipmumks!
He is the genius
I don't live in a country / area with chipmunks, but maybe a solution to that problem would be to put a little rigid drainage pipe under the walkway where it was being pulled up anyway for the chipmunks to go through without digging.
Roger boy keep going..
Those chipmunks are gonna be mad. Alvin Simon THERODORE.
When he's learned a few things does he get a longer shovel?
Really good tip.
"Not surprisingly, the ICPI cares about doing interlocking pavement right. Their recommendation for using stone dust under pavers? Don’t.
They, and many others, recommend what’s commonly referred to as washed concrete sand, a coarse-grained sand that complies with CSA A23.1 and ASTM C33 standards."
Alvinnnnnnnn!!!!!!!!!!!
I like this kids enthusiasm. He would be a good successor to roger!!!!!! Unless roger has a son.
Poor roger, his age. Get well good friend
عملكم جميل و متقن..مشكورين
Very impressive work neat job
My neighbor suggested fox urine which I purchased at a gardening supply store. That even got the woodchuck out from under her front porch.
Great job! Roger looks like he has a back injury
Fixed mine, it was tree roots pushing up random pavers.
I'd have considered installing some plastic conduit for the chipmunks, then repave on top.
Your son is fine !!!!!!
I'm going to be posting a few videos as soon as I edit them. Of a paver driveway and brick walkway. Within the next couple of weeks. Please come by and check them out
Sounds good.
Great I enjoyed
hey, guys, I have this same problem in my walkway, im going to do that.thnkas
I came here for Roger Cook's accent. ;)
I love it
*Alright Corey*
How to fix a loose tile?
18 and a hoff inches
I have an old sidewalk that is trapping water next to my house.. I need to tear it up and fix it.. we’re posting new videos every week of our 1806 Stone House.. if anyone is interested in following along.
Jay Dee thanks! I hope you enjoy. It’s a huge project and we’re having a lot of fun creating a video diary. Thanks again.

They needed my old dog Cubby,,, I bought a cabin back off the C&O canal,, and the PO said they would shot him as they couldn't take him with them,, I told them Hell NO.... figuring they had a month till setallment and we would move in right after that,,,, well they left the next day,,,pour cubby who was 8 years old had to fend for himself,,,well he ate Chipmunks and went to the river to drink ,,,, I had to carry a 4 ft 2x4 wit me till he got used to me ,,, he was a 150 Black chow and he lived till he was 21,,,,,I miss him,,,
Can you train me how to become a landscape construction?
I’m pretty sure that’s from water erosion
So the frost heaving moved the slab and the bricks followed. Why blame the chipmunks.
They won’t bite through concrete
Roger, your looking tired my old friend!
ScottDLR
his what looks tired?
rofl, respect to the flip phone - mine broke 5 years ago =/
everything was great about this episode... until they decided to add some ugly lumps of concrete at the end. a little forethought would have gone a long way. it would have been no sweat to install the screen when they had 18" of pavers removed and could move the granite step with a prybar.
Okay.
Why wouldn't you put a pvc pipe under there they already dug it once
👍👍👍
I'm really surprised he didn't take a selfie...
Brings an expert in to find out about problem and ends up telling expert the problem
2019
Should of put a tunnel in for them so it doesn't happen again
Wont the chipmunks just burrow further up the walkway or around the cement? They're not just going to sit there and wiggle their noses and say, well, let's move somewhere else and go to the neighbors house.
He has flip phone in 2018
Young man, I’m roger and I may be dying so you’re wrong!!!!!!
Levi
Ok
Some gloves would be great
OK OK OK OK 😣
1:31 Roger is like “Hey you dumb millennial I’ve been doing this for 40 years...plus you can see the rest of the pattern....take the pic”
"Tommy..."? No "Tommy" in the video.
Cory is HOT !
Walter White I was just about to write that! 😂
Buff Af
“Here’s why you’re wrong: the script calls for a baby face actor and that means you can’t possibly know anything. Conversely, TOH caters to old white men, so here’s an actor to show you how to to do the absolute basics....
Rodger looks ready to clock out... of life.
Lol man the interactions are soooo awkward.
Why are all the keyboard carpenters posting junky comments about health? Post a comment on the work not what you think of the person doing the work. Narcicistic jerks.
,
Is anyone else weirded out that he told his son that they were going to have an anatomy lesson
Jackson Butler it’s not his son.
1) that's not his son
2) the word "anatomy" is only creepy if you use it as a euphemism for genitalia, which is not the correct meaning of the word.
Im tired of other shows create false drama, the most these guys do is feed lines to home owners and bankrupt home owners that go over budget.
Wtf is tommy
Next Generation because of smartphone use
this is a great learning channel but my god the acting is so bad
