Opeth 🇸🇪, already two decades one of the best Progmetal bands in the music world.
THE best for me🤘😎
Tool number one in progressive metal for sure, opeth honestly is damn near tied.
When fans of Opeth say they don't like "new Opeth", they mean songs from the album 'Heritage' and onward. Damnation is highly praised by most fans, including myself. Also, I would really like it if you reacted to the song ''The Drapery Falls" it has that soft and heavy mix you are looking for. Thanks for your reactions.
Exactly, it's not only purely about the growls, the songwriting has suffered IMO
@@Caleb-il7om i wouldnt say. maybe on sorceress, but not on Pale Communion. and let's not pretend like Deliverance was that good in terms of songwriting
People are crazy. Heritage is a bit of a testing the water type of album containing a few weakish tracks, but it's still a great album overall. Pale Communion is pretty much a masterpiece, on par with Still Life, BWP and GR. Moon Above, Sun Below sounds more like Opeth than pretty much any other Opeth track and the songs which sound less like old Opeth have some of Mikael's best writing ever, like Faith in Others and River. Sorceress is not my favorite, but it's still a solid album.
@@Hybbeman eternal rains will come, cusp of eternity, elysian woes, goblin...
@@Celatra I don't think any of those songs hit quite like the older opeth (ghost reveries and prior). I don't like michael's mimicking of 70s; it feels like an ode to another time as opposed to original songwriting
Wolf described it perfectly, and like Sistah I think it’s a perfect song... actually I love this entire album... It’s haunting and moody. 💜
Moody to say the least. I believe Mikael was in a bad state of mind during the recording of Deliverance and Damnation. Damnation is such a precious record to put on, in my time of need. 🙂
@@thewildhealer541 The band was in shambles, they had to move to a different studio, Mikaels grandmother was killed in a car accident during the recording etc. and Mikaels idea about what was supposed to be a double album was to explore the subject of death and surrounding topics.
Yeah the first two albums are great. Still Life is probably their best album so it’s worth checking out for sure. As for me I like any Opeth song. Lol
Same here, people are missing out on their newer stuff starting with Heritage. I love all of their discography.
I used to pop the "Damnation" album into my stereo at night to help me quiet my mind and get ready to sleep. It's such a chill experience and I'm really glad you guys reviewed it.
This album is so beautifull, it’s my favorite to paint or read with. But I guess for me every type of album has its purpose
Someone had fun editing! :-D
I love Damnation! Actually watched Opeth do a whole Damnation live set in 2003*. And yes, it's often confused as acoustic, since it's Deliverance's clean sibling. I started my Opeth journey with Blackwater Park, which is a perfect mixture between both styles. The first two albums didn't grow on me as much. Maybe, after many years of abstinence, I should give them a new listen.
*Sweet side fact: Mikael opened his speech to the audience by telling us that he just became a father.
If I'm not mistaken, Damnation and Deliverance are meant as eachother counterparts, where Damnation is the mellow one and Deliverance is not so mellow. 😅
They were planned and written as a double album with Deliverance and Damnation being the two albums. The label split them up and sold them separately (which didn't make Mikael & Crew happy). In 2016 they were remastered and released as the double album they were meant to be (and thus the version to get).
Even the CD's are painted Black and White accordingly.
Hey =)
Just for your information, the Damnation album on which features Windowpane kinda is one of their old album. Damnation is a concept album that fits its counter part Deliverance. Those two were meant to complete each others by being their total opposite (Deliverance being a heavy-hype song oriented album and Damnation a soft/melancholic song oriented album)
What is considered the "new" Opeth starts with their Heritage albun, which they stopped being a Death-Black inspired Prog metal band and suddenly changed for being a more Prog Rock band.
The new Opeth stuff is still great (Heritage, Sorceress etc etc...) it's just completly different and isn't anything like the old Opeth anymore. If you want to really know about the new opeth stuff and what it sounds like, i'd go with their song:
Moon above, Sun below.
As for your reaction: Been subbed to your channel for 2 years now and it still as good as it was before. Keep up the good work.
Oh and yeah Damnation is not an "acoustic" album, they play through amps and stuff. It's just softer.
^_^/// Thank you for the information and the compliment ♥
Lead guitarist absolutely nailed the whole thing ❤️
And you finish the video with that bit of Deliverance
.....🤘🤘🤘🤘🤘🤘🤘
This was the ultimate Opeth line-up and -era (Still Life - Ghost Reveries) in my opinion.
You should definitely check out this drummer's current band Soen, very underrated band.
That Deliverance outro was fire :D nice one.
You should listen to the album "Still life" (1999) by Opeth and especially the songs "Serenity Painted Death" or "The Moor". This album is pure death metal greatness with some black metal vibes too and also, some mellow parts. Wolf, you've said you've listened to the first 2 albums, find some free time and listen to all their discography, you won't regret :D
Opeth never goes back, they are the leader of the pack!
Progress!
Yes they have the best journey in music history. And still it's not over...many more to come....🤞
I would love to see you guys react to "The night and silent water" from Opeth, it's one of those musics that you need to listen several times to really appreciate it. But even the first time is amazing.
Whole album is just phenomenal
This is the best live dvd I've ever seen in my entire life. It shows the quality of both soft and heavy sides of these musicians and their dedication to their craft.
I remember buying Lamentations DVD at HMV while browsing for other live DVDs at the time. The interesting part was all the other metal DVDs were all like 39.99 and I saw this one was like 11.99 for some reason. This DVD has a sick live version of The Leper Affinity XD
I think this is one of those songs that gets better and better every time you listen to it. For me, a long time Opeth fan, this is definitely one of those songs that very strongly brings the warm vibes of the past every time I listen to it. On top of that, I think that 99.99% of Opeth fan base do love this album and style, it's the newer stuff from the album Heritage and onwards as someone commented that some of us aren't that drawn into.
You want acoustic stuff? Try for example "Benighted", "Still Day Beneath the Sun", "Credence", "Face of Melinda", "Patterns in the Ivy II" and "Harvest". There's also a wholly acoustic gig that they did somewhere in the States and you can find it, or some songs from it at least, from here in UA-cam. It's quite cool, they play a lot of their "harsher" songs as acoustic versions there. And Mikael, true to his style, drops some funny shit between the songs.
You want beautiful, but not necessarily acoustic stuff? Try "In my time of Need", "Isolation Years", "To Bid You Farewell" and the whole Damnation album.
And the heavier ones? My personal favorites are "Dirge for November", "The Twilight is My Robe", "When", "Demon of the Fall", "April Ethereal", "Bleak", "Blackwater Park", "Serenity Painted Death", "The Leper Affinity", "The Drapery Falls", "The Baying of the Hounds" and "Reverie/Harlequin Forest". Might have forgotten some, but as you can see, there's plenty. Hand on heart I cannot say any other band that has so many great songs consistently throughout their albums!
totally agree with the comparison of In Flames to Opeth. both have evolved so much through their existence
Well.... If you like to dwell in brutality of Opeth you just have to listen Heir Apparent AND/OR Grand Conjuration, you won't be disappointed.
Opeth - To bid you farewell
it's mostly acoustic but has that 'heavy' part that you crave
After Blackwater Park, Damnation is my second favorite Opeth album. Windowpane is the introduction and to me, Bleak is the climax.
Kamelot - Memento Mori
It's about time you get to this amazing band, and this masterpiece of a song.
Damnation is not usually what people mean when they say they don't like new Opeth. Normally it's from Heritage onwards. Most old Opeth albums had clean songs like this. Benighted, Harvest, Isolation Years. Now, it's not so much that they dropped the death growls, but that they really amped up the seventies vibe, to the point I think of them not so much as prog metal but prog rock. Not really a fan of theirs anymore, since that shift.
I agree. What I look for is the melancholy of the older stuff, which I believe is lacking in the newer stuff (with a few exceptions), rather than just full on aggression or even a mix of both. I’m ok with the lack of aggression, but it’s gotta be sad as fuck lol
I see where you're coming from and why. I took a break from listening to Opeth when Heritage was released. After a couple of years I started exploring their entire discography again and reacquainted myself with the stuff I loved (Still Life->Watershed) as well as getting used to their new direction. I'd say that Pale Communion and In Cauda Venenum are, to me, amazing albums; the latter with some rather heavy moments as well as some of their most tasty guitar solos recorded (by Fredrik Åkesson). Sorceress felt uninspired and boring beyond the title track which was the heaviest song Mikael wrote since Watershed. It's more of a straight heavy metal song with some Opethy vibes than prog. The rest on that album is not really worth mentioning. In Cauda Venenum takes a number of listens to get into and if you hate any kind of vintage influenced prog rock I guess none of their newer material will be interesting.
Besides, I like the 70'ies vibes, I grew up with it (although I didn't listen to 70'ies prog rock specifically).
@@scyphe I love 70s prog. I love prog rock in general (effing love Riverside and wish 'reaction tube' got into them as often as they do PT). I just don't think modern Opeth is particularly good at it. Prog, in my book, is more than just changing time signatures. When I listen to Gabriel-era Genesis, I hear a band exploring. When I listen to modern Opeth (admittedly haven't listened to much of their latest), I hear a band trying to recapture a feeling. It just... feels inauthentic to me, and I can't get into it. If you can stil enjoy their sound, more power to you, they're just not my cup of tea, anymore. Even if I can enjoy the occasional vintage prog (the band Evership comes to mind), Opeth's brand of it just doesn't do anything for me.
@@RevanBR Well, I actually agree with you about Opeth (specifically Mikael) writing songs heavily influenced by all the classics as well as obscure 70'ies prog rock that he got into very early in their career, esp. Heritage and a chunk of Pale Communion. I don't listen to Heritage since it doesn't really give me anything (besides Devil's Orchard). There's plenty of pretty melodies and parts but something is missing.
With Pale Communion it feels like he took a step forward and wrote songs that had their own identities (not all of the songs though, there are some less inspired material on there as well), definitely an improvement over Heritage in my book with some really great songs (esp. the first three on the album).
Then came Sorceress which is... well, let's just say it's probably their weakest album of any era of theirs. The title track is good the first couple of times you hear it but since it's a heavy metal song that is very straight forward for being Opeth it's quite forgettable. I'm not even going to mention the rest of that album.
And then In Cauda Venenum. This is very different from their previous three albums. It's much more diverse, eclectic and experimental and the songs are generally quite different from each other. It's definitely the best of the four. It is however not quite as easily accessible as the previous albums. It's an album you have to listen to several times if you want to really appreciate it. It sounds more "Opethy" than the others while still being very much progressive.
I do wish he'd write some heavier stuff since he seemed to have an endless supply of amazing riffs. I don't miss the growling itself, I miss the riffs, chord structures and transitions that he mastered during the Still LifeWatershed era.
@@scyphe Okay. Deep dive. I haven't listened to In Cauda Venenum all that much, but I don't like any of the other 3, even if there is one song in Pale Communion that I enjoy (Cusp of Eternity). There's just such a shift in feel from their earlier work that it doesn't feel like the same band. It used to be that their lyrics and their songs felt like a take on Poe or Lovecraft. A gothic-like hopelessness was in every tune, be it heavy or light. And it was reflected, heavily, in Mikael's singing. There was a Jekyll and Hyde aspect to the song dinamics. Either the grave, low-tone, almost spoken word clean singing, or the monster, growling, screaming its anger at Melinda's muder, or its lover's appparent betrayal at MAYH. It was effing emotional, raw. It wasn't growling just to be heavy, the song called for something like it.
Now... As English isn't my first language maybe I won't be able to explain it, but Mikael is singing much higher (?). Like he's really pushing his voice out there, as opposed to his previous clean singing, which was more subdued, more reserved. Add that to the tons more background stuff going on with the songs (from Uriah Heep-like choirs, to constant keyboards, to Axe being a less subtle drummer than Lopez), and it feels like that desolate atmosphere, that low-key ambience that was in most Opeth songs, even the heaviest, is just gone. The silence is gone. The space in between chords where you could hear their fingers sliding over the strings. What ambience there is, feels more like Steven Wilson's Holy Drinker than, say, songs like Harvest or Credence (I'm thinking of Universal Truth, from ICV, in particular. That song fits into The Raven that Refused to Sing more than it does even modern Opeth albums).
I don't hate modern Opeth, I just don't like them. I listen to other stuff, instead. They went down a path and I don't think it's worth the bother to try and follow. I don't get excited at the prospect of a new album of theirs, anymore. I will give ICV another try, though. Maybe I'll enjoy it more than my original listen.
This album is my favourite Sunday afternoon chill-out record.
I pop the vinyl on and just forget that I have to go to work the next day.
They actually changed on the Heritage record. Watershed was the last one where the old Opeth died and resurrected as Tull 2
As Mikael says in other interviews, heaviness is an attitude not a genre...he's always heavy even on acoustic albums or when not roaring. No album they created is less than 4 stars and many are tops which is astonishing after so many.....such a great sonic journey too. No laziness in their albums at all. Just a great passion and mastery on most songs.♥️👨🎤
That outro is a total gem! :oD I love it!
Thank you for sticking around to watch the ending ;) ♥
@@HalfLifeSistah Not a second earlier am I ready with a video with the two of you! ^^)
Damnation and Deliverance were supposed to be released together as a double album, but the record label didn't want to do it that way, so they were released 6 months apart.
..well, as you know (and likely listened to by now) Blackwater park more heavy with more then a few Steven Wilson assistances (production, occasional guitar and backing). So 2 for 1 :)
Oh great opening Mikael clip!♥️♥️♥️
You REALLY need to give Opeth time. It will grow on you more n more n more... That applies to all their stuff, old AND new. Of course for those people who had the privilege of getting to know their music in their early years, the Opeth effect has been much much deeper, there was NO band out there that sounded like them. It was and is such a unique experience.
Absolutely. The rest of this world will catch up one day. They are way ahead of most.
You guys are the best!!! SKOL!!!
I have an old 6 disc CD player... Damnation never leaves it. 😁
You guys need to hear Hessian Peel. You will get the variety you are looking for!
HESSIAN PEEL = PERFECTION
@@recurrencetheorem4264 Watershed is a journey through different moods, all dark. Heir Apparent is soooo heavy.. Progressive Doom/Death Metal. Hessian Peel is very Opeth.
One of their best and most underrated albums.
While album is so good....achingly beautiful yet haunting
11:00 It would actually be so fucking cool if they did that section with distortion guitars. Such a heavy and ominous melody.
The album Damnation is actually the first mellow Opeth album, no grunts, no heavy distorted guitars. It was recorded at the same time as the album Deliverance wich is much more heavy.
Damnation contains acoustic parts, but I would definately not call it an entirely acoustic album, but it is softer than what was usually associated with Opeth at the time.
Opeth are the world's best band for me. Can't wait for the rest if the world to catch up.🤘🌍🏆
The Damnation album in almost it's entirety was written after Mikael came back from the funeral of his mother, this song, Windowpane, is about that funeral.
Would love to see her reaction to the classic Chandelier piano version by Sia. Live or recorded. Random but I'm curious lol.
Hi Wolf! I'm an old In Flames fan, and I say it's such a shame that you didn't get to listen to Opeth back when they started. But since you say you love their early albums, try listening to their albums in a chronological order. Also give each album a coupla weeks before you go for the next. Great reaction btw.
I really think Sistah would enjoy In My Time of Need by Opeth. It's deep & emotional & beautiful.
Also Wolf this was pretty much a one off at the time because Mike had these acoustic tunes it was recorded at the same time as Deliverance
I've been a fan of Opeth since I bought their album Morningrise in 1996, yet 'm one of those fans that love BOTH the "old" Opeth and the "new" Opeth. There have been bands that I simply stopped listening to due to a catastrophic direction change (when Metallical released Load they died as a band as far as I was concerned) but with Opeth it's different for some reason. I've always listened to many different genres although a majority of it is on the same side of the spectrum (dark, heavy or both).
Usually when they record acoustic parts in their studio versions they tend to stick with electric guitar on stage, they just switch off the overdrive/distortion etc. and go for a mellow clean tone that is similar to an acoustic guitar sound. In this case though the album version of Windowpane was recorded with electric guitars to get that particular tone (the studio version sounds much much better than this live version though). Probably a majority of the fans had a hard time with the albums released after Watershed but many of them sooner or later got used to their new direction, esp. when they released the awesome Pale Communion album, a real masterpiece imho.
They've made so many acoustic parts as well as songs over the years. Mikael left the last remnants of death metal/growling behind after 2008's Watershed album which is just awesome and spans a wide range of sounds and styles from song to song whether it's the really heavy growl song "Heir Apparent", the melancholic and dark "Porcelain Heart", the doom style of Hex Omega etc.
After that they switched lanes completely with their 2011 album Heritage. For each of the four albums they released after Watershed they kept evolving their style, incorporating different influences, coming back with a quite straight heavy metal song (with Opeth-vibes) which is the title song on the album Sorceress (highly recommended if you want to try Opeth in a heavy metal mood). With their latest album, In Cauda Venenum, they went on an experimental journey while picking up some Pink Floyd vibes. The songs on that album are quite eclectic, from heavy to chill, from experimental to jazz-influenced.
ps. they're known for using 70'ies instruments/sounds like the mellotron, rhodes organ, moog etc. They're also known for using a sustainer device (e-bow) in many of their songs on Blackwater Park etc. to add a sustained high guitar note that doesn't ring out, adding a ton of ambience and atmosphere over the main song. A third thing they're known for is to record an acoustic guitar playing the same chords/riffs as the distorted rhythm guitar in many of their heavy songs to add a sonic layer that creates a much fuller sound without you clearly hearing the acoustic since it's blended in with the distorted guitar. If you listen to albums like Blackwater Park, Deliverance/Damnation, Ghost Reveries and Watershed with proper headphones on you'll hear just how extremely well produced it is (not overproduced, that's a different thing) since there's so much going on yet it's all balanced perfectly and no instrument is sounding muddy or butting heads with various frequencies of the bass, the drums, the keyboards, the vocals etc.
I agree Scyphe, those disregarding their later era are missing out. Some people want a band to stay stagnant (cough Iron Maiden, AC/DC cough) and lose their passion in their creativity and performance.
one of my fav songs
I do believe I enjoyed the outro on this one waaay more than the actual reaction!! Sorry...not sorry! Hahaha :P
Lol, no worries!! \m/
ps. Opeth have recorded some heavy songs (doom/death/thrash style metal) that aren't particularly progressive. A song like Master's Apprentice (or the really heavy opening track Wreath) on the album Deliverance is pretty straight forward for being Opeth.
Nice reaction.🤘🏻 Please check out Helloween - Ride The Sky (lyrics or audio).😋
Like others have already said, this isn't "new Opeth."
Sistah, do you sing?
Your voice is captivating to me👍🏻
I was expecting the make sistah cry tag on this song 🤔
You guys should check out Two Steps From Hell.
Some epic music there.. Very symphonic and beautiful.
Check out « the fire in her eyes»
Still the best reaction channel on the tubes.
Aaaawwwe, thank you, sugah! ♥
It's funny how this is like "I get why the fans don't like this" when literally all Opeth fans love this entire album
But yeah, it was just a misunderstanding, and I guess that can help create some undesired prejudices, so I do recommend giving it a chance because it's a beautiful álbum. And I mean, Opeth fans understand the fact that not every song has to have a heavy death metal moment, even if they're not present in an entire record. But it was Heritage the one that really felt different, so it's not so much because of the absence of growls, but because of the overall style.
No Opeth fan would ever hate on anything on Damnation. Not one. If they did, they just are stuck in genre music. I might be biased because I'm a musician, and love Opeth.
This is what Beethoven and Mozart would make if they were alive.
Interesting thought 🤔😊
More opeth please
Did anybody request a newer song? ;) (from Heritage and on) They really shifted to a new style and they stick to it till now.
Windowpane is one of my least favorite songs on Damnation. seems like it's everybody's favorite :P
sorry man... it might be my favourite on Damnation
Damnation is the only Opeth album my wife likes.. the only one we listen together.
From Heritage on they lost me as listener
I like Windowpane but it's definitly not my favorite on Damnation. Death whispered a lullaby might be.
@@woudy7327 You are really missing out on some great stuff. Heritage is one of my favorite albums by them, up there with still life. You should go into a dark room with headphones and close your eyes and listen to heritage. It takes you to another planet.
I think My Arms, Your Hearse would be ur favorite Opeth album. My favorite is Still Life, It was the full transition to Progressive Death and I think their peak. My Arms, Your Hearse was right before Still Life
Love both those albums.
Uhh
orchid and morningrise are prog as hell
@@Celatra they're pretty proggy but I wouldn't call them prog, I consider still life to be the full transition, 100%prog. My arms, your Hearse I'd also say is full on prog but much less so. Still love orchid and morningeise
@@sebastianmortimer7072 orchid and mornignrise have way more transitions per song than MAYH.
@@Celatra idk if I agree with that but ion think that necessarily defines prog anyway, either way ion really care, it doesnt mean anything it's just a category, so ima leave this here
What piano cover is playing in the beginning
Good god....what am i looking at???!
Black Rose Immortal is a beautiful experience as is Nectar, my favourite older songs from them. Not that this is not an awesome song as well.
Nice glasses girl
How have you guys not reacted to NF yet?
We HAVE ^_^ We have one on Patreon. And another one on the way. NF - Story. ♥
Please react to Opeth - Burden
Still Life > Blackwater Park
I think a heavy part would ruin this song or throw it off the flow. Even though prog is filled with sporadic transitions, this was a perfect, beautiful journey on its own.
Please listen to on the backs of angels
I don't really get that "old" vs "new" stuff. Great band from the beginning. Don't care for his growls that much but still like the older albums. Love their new direction too. I take what I'm offered and don't whine about it.
Disagree Wolf....take your time and listen to their albums....they will be in your top 10 within a year of listening....way better than Equilibrium fir example 😉
Not really acoustic. More not distorsion.
All Opeth is great Opeth, whether it's from Still Life or In Caudia Venunum :)
