Prof when you talked about Crystal skull, you pronounced Isu wrong you pronounced it as I-su, in the games they are referred to and pronounced as Ee-su.
This set feels like they started a fully draftable modern set (like LotR) but stopped nearly halfway. As if management changed their mind and told them they're no longer doing a full set.
Nah, they likely had all of the contracts signed and everything planned before Aftermath bombed and couldn't change course to something less monumentally stupid.
Card design is also very tricky with expanded universes. One thing the Fallout, LotR, Doctor who, and Warhammer 40K all have in common is that they don't use Magic cards that are specific to Magic (Kodama's reach, Akroma's will, Simic growth chamber, etc) as these would break those universes immersion. (Ironic) One reason I can see why they didn't make precons for Assassin's Creed is the same reason 50% of the cards from this set are black: the universe is very linear as to which it offers. Final fantasy on the other hand..
@@justinanderson2631100%, this is a very forced match. FF will suit the diverse ultra high fantasy of magic very well. I argue 40k also did, and should have had a set beyond the precons (if only I could upgrade the chaos deck within the flavor 😔)
@@justinanderson2631 Yeah, Universes Beyond: FINAL FANTASY will no doubt be better balanced. One other problem with the Assassin's Creed set is that most of the creatures are Humans. There's not a lot of creature diversity. Besides Humans, the only other creature types that come to mind are Birds and Walls. Where with FINAL FANTASY, there are more creature types to choose from. Humans, moogles (that'll be interesting), viera, bangaa, seeq, etc. Also, I know this seems random, but I'm going to predict that there's a good chance these cards won't be reprinted: White Dragon, Blue Dragon, Black Dragon, Red Dragon, and Green Dragon. While these do appear as enemies/bosses in FINAL FANTASY, they are more connected to Dungeons and Dragons. FINAL FANTASY will probably be more character-connected, although we might get the occasional random monster/boss. Something like Omega being a "Legendary Artifact Creature - Construct" or Demon Wall, "Artifact Creature - Wall Demon".

I'm behind on watching your uploads. And I do agree with your questions. Example: why so soon after MH3? Product fatigue for one. Thanks for another great video. Professor for President 2024.
Honest question I’d like to debate: Is running Maskwood Nexus to make all your creatures Assassins not viable in Modern or is an overlooked point Prof made when saying freerunning is not viable in modern?
Its pointless. if your spending 4 mana in modern it has to be game changing not just a value add. also it means that whenever you dont have it a a nuch of your cards get much worse
Im actually a new player! i got the Assasins creed box as a birthday gift and later picked up the warhammer command deck since those were my favorite franchises and the community has been really supportive so far (despite getting my ass handed to me on the reg). I was hoping to use the cards i already have from the box set to play modern
Excalibur is also a good way to get the Capistole Triad (or whatever) halfway to popping if it ends up in your graveyard. Because, say, you made a token of it and sacrificed the real card.
I like that you cover both modern and commander (in the 99). And I also like the switch you make. It was entertaining and I was wandering if you switch back to the modern 😅
As an assassin’s creed fan, I’m so excited for this. As a magic fan, I wish they made commander decks. I’m excited to see what other cards are being made besides what we were shown and leaked out. I think this set will be fun, but I agree it’s too soon for them. Should’ve waited a bit longer and fleshed out the set.
Reconnaissance seems crazy strong. For one mana give all of your creatures better version of vigilance. So you can not only save your creatures from dying to blockers, but also get attack triggers without any risk or trigger for targeting creature with spell/ability. It would be strong even it could be used once per turn.
You keep mentioning, "watch another video immediately".... I think you gave everyone a great idea for a solution to gaining more youtube revenue: Release two videos back to back, snd don't beg to have loyal fans to watch something they have already seen. It's a bogo for channel promoting and it makes sense. Say a new player gets introduced to commander: the commandzone having two new videos will double the engagement from both new and old fans of the content. But maybe you care about accessories for your decks too and you watch TCC to get both product reviews and card assessments. Release two new videos, maybe one of each, and you'll get the kind of engagement youtube is requiring. 😊 Ty prof!
For the MH sets there are complaints that there are too many modern relevant cards but here there are too few modern relevant cards. Some people will complain no matter what is done.
I don't understand why one would complain that they made it Modern legal. It's not like you can't use it for Commander even if it is also intended for Modern, and if there isn't much to really matter for Modern, it's effectively no different than if it was just a Commander set. Seems like it works out fine as is.
might be an unpopular opinion, but I think that 2 modern playables is fine? Why should it NOT have been made modern legal? Only when something is too strong for a format should it not be included in it
It’s a tough line. If it’s Modern legal it should have Modern relevance. I feel it largely does not. If it is too powerful for Modern well…then it’s a Horizons set.
You should do a separate video for just Pauper cards from Assassin's Creed. I miss Pauper content. Everyone does Commander and I do like Commander, but I like Pauper too. They are the only true non rotating eternal formats.
@@leress yeah, I know, that's why I assumed that there were commons in the main set. I don't really have much interest in Universes Beyond, Assassin's Creed. I was really just hyped about the DND, and LOTR Sets. So I honestly don't follow Universes Beyond too closely unless it's a set that particularly interests me.
I have a Karlach, Fury of Avernus deck that is built around multiple combat steps. I’m thinking I need to find a way to get Excalibur attached to it to KO multiple players in one turn. 😂
Props to the editor for using glitches on the cards. Flavour win🔥 I love the assassin's creed stuff. I haven't played since brotherhood and it's like seeing family i haven't met with in over a decade. Pumped to have magic's assassins joined by these veterans to bolster the theme 👌
Not new but since you mentioned reconnaissance. Cover of darkness with psychic frogs seems like it could have potential. I've seen psychic frog roll people in hilarious fashion even without unlockable
I personally think this set was in a bit of development purgatory and got shuffled around and changed a few times. Originally I think they wanted to do the normal 4 commander decks plus collector boosters but at some point realised they didn’t have enough content or deck diversity for 4 maybe 3 but 2 strong ones. So then they decided to reinvent aftermaft boosters to see if they work for a UB set and decided for some reason to make it modern legal like LOTR.
Not gonna lie this crossover made me finally pull the trigger on MTG. Bought the LoTR and Assassins Creed starter kits. The LoTR starter kit was on sale for 10€ so couldnt help myself buying that one too.
I suspect the reasoning for modern legal is that MH3 is the most recent release, so the 2 types of magic that are most likely being played at any given LGS when a new player goes in to pick up these ACR cards are Modern and Commander. It's probably also why this set got a 1v1 Starter Kit as the "precon" product. Now, whether any of the AC cards are actually going to be competitive in the Modern meta is a completely different story. But ultimately if the new player does want to keep playing a 60 card format then they'll need some better Modern legal cards and MH3 boosters are going to be right there waiting for them. For me, there are some nice-to-have reprints and a bunch of creatures that are going to go into commander decks. It's the sort of thing where I might grab one booster as a treat after a draft, but I'm just going to grab the singles that I actually want.
I feel like these fit into magic pretty well. Way better than some of the other ones in the pipeline. I could see buying a commander deck if it was decent.
I think we can all agree on the following: "Assassin's Creed fans will be happy at the idea that they get the IP added to the game" "The handling of and execution of this IP's addition to Magic is questionable and confusing" "The Assassin's Creed cards might be fun for fans, but they have little impact on the game"
I am a huge assassin's creed fan, despite ubisoft constantly taking L's as a company. But I completely understand the dislike with Universe's Beyond inclusions. That being said, I am irrefutably excited to be playing with the GOATs Ezio and Edward, but the product burn out is real. Like we just had MH3 for less than a few hours before the AC spoilers started rolling out 😭
@17:53 “Am I being too hard on [pause]” is an interesting accidental euphemism. I still try to prevent myself from saying “more on that one” when replying to other people’s comments during meetings due to the audible connotation it solicits. English is just a hopscotch game in a minefield sometimes. The last thing Syr Gwen decks needed was redundancy on Colossal Hammer. Speaking of equipment, I had just started using Psychic Paper in my Hope of Ghirapur voltron deck. Sad to see it didn’t even last a year without being power crept out by another Universe’s Beyond card.
Honest question: if the set has little to no cards good for modern - why does that matter? If it’s modern legal, but doesn’t change the format, no negative effect has occurred? I can understand it might be disappointing to not have new modern cards, but nothing bad has happened, has it?
Bruh, I gotta say you missed how potentially busted that God triad whatever is for affinity commanders (praying it doesn't accidentally be good in modern). You play normally then all of a sudden, there's a close to if not 0 mana 7/7 hitting the table that turns everything you have into 9/9s.
So I’ve been a huge Assassin’s Creed fan ever since Assassin’s Creed II and Brotherhood. I absolutely LOVE that they are getting a Collab. However I’m also VERY disappointed with how they’re treating the cards and how we’re doing the 7 pack and 10 pack boosters at premium pricing. I was ready to go all out with this set and drop so much money, but after seeing it revealed slowly day by day I’ve come to be super cautious and uneasy on what I preorder. I ended up ordering 1 collector’s booster box just to celebrate the launch, and plan to buy singles afterwards to build an Ezio deck. I wish this set was way more hype but I had a strong feeling early on it would turn out this way.
I mean, there is a pretty good UB 2/2 creature that draws you a card every turn if you play a historic hard, along with Evasion in menace and growing every turn. That seems like a very powerful creature?
yeah youre right about AC set feeling really out of place AND its a mini set? So I cant even play draft with them? I cant figure out what the angle of thee being in booster packs is aside getting us to try to gamble for boring cards
I've never played any of the Assassin's Creed games, but I do like the look of the set. There are a good number of cards that look like they'd be right at home in my Cube or Commander deck of choice. Too bad that Assassinate didn't make it into the main set, but it might be available as a List card. If not, Royal Assassin still makes up for it. I just wish we had both. This set looks like it will have lots of fun interactions built in. A member of my play group at my LGS joked about giving Dogmeat The Spear of Leonidas. That's how you know he's a good boy. Similarly, I think it would be hilarious (not to mention ironic) to use Haystack to phase out a Needlebug, but I don't know if it would work. Needlebug has protection from artifacts... Anyways, I'm kinda excited for this set as I already have some Assassin's Creed cards on my Card Kingdom wishlist.
I think it being modern legal is just because it could, basically nothing powerful enough for Modern players to complain about it ruining anything, but still getting new players into a 60 card format.

In the words of WotC, “Your decks could use more Ass… _continue reading_ “
14:40 I am already planning to put Crystal Skull in my Tom Bombadil sagas deck
And Excalibur! Tom typically has 7 CMC of sagas going, making Excalibur an easy late game play.
I appreciate you sharing the your top 7 cards from Assassin's GREED. I like Viewpoint Synchronization and Caduces. Thank you for the video Professor.
Not even a fan of AC anymore, but came here to watch you vent about how ridiculous the release schedule is. Love your content Prof!
Very good 20 second video.
It was entertaining and I was wandering if you switch back to the modern 😅
you should talk about the two decks in the assasins creed starter box
After equipping Ghalta with Excalibur don't forget to double the power to 44 with the Skullspore Nexus.
Honestly the best part of this set for me is that I get more Ancient Egypt themed cards.
Reconnaissance seems crazy strong. For one mana give all of your creatures better version of vigilance. So you can not only save your creatures from dying to blockers, but also get attack triggers without any risk or trigger for targeting creature with spell/ability. It would be strong even it could be used once per turn.
Do you think it has modern applications? Because as far as commander goes, it's a reprint and has been legal since the formats inception.
Watching because the Prof asked me to...but I love that opening bit!
You are the heart and soul of this community 🤍💙🖤❤️💚
I’m salivating, both for myself as an assassins creed fan and for myself with a Daxos Voltron deck.
Prof feels like the Mr. Rogers of magic the gathering. Just invites you to hang out with him and talk magic
Will you also make a video about the Starter Kit??
Kind of surprised Yuriko didn't even get a passing mention in the Excalibur bit.
You keep mentioning, "watch another video immediately".... I think you gave everyone a great idea for a solution to gaining more youtube revenue:
Release two videos back to back, snd don't beg to have loyal fans to watch something they have already seen.
Ty prof!
For the MH sets there are complaints that there are too many modern relevant cards but here there are too few modern relevant cards. Some people will complain no matter what is done.
I love the idea of an assassins creed commander deck. I wish they would’ve made some commander precons for it.
Battlefield Improvisation should have gotten a mention for Modern, that looks like it could be insane in hammertime decks
Prof go knock on Hasbro's door and tell them to push back sets 🙏🏻
OMG This Helix add made by Prof is so quality XD
You should do a separate video for just Pauper cards from Assassin's Creed. I miss Pauper content. Everyone does Commander and I do like Commander, but I like Pauper too. They are the only true non rotating eternal formats.
Except there are no commons in the set.
@@SovietDancebot oh, I didn't realize. Sorry.
@@SovietDancebot There are commons but they are only in the starter kit. 1 reprint and 9 new ones.
@@WCD_Media there are commons but they are in the starter kit, 1 reprint and 9 new
@@leress yeah, I know, that's why I assumed that there were commons in the main set.
Congratulations professor for reaching 1 million subscribers!
Props to the editor for using glitches on the cards. Flavour win🔥
I love the assassin's creed stuff.
So then they decided to reinvent aftermaft boosters to see if they work for a UB set and decided for some reason to make it modern legal like LOTR.
you can juice up those freerunning cards by maybe adding in a few medallions to make them even more cheaper, unless they just don't work with them.
Such an amazing episode!
I feel like these fit into magic pretty well. Way better than some of the other ones in the pipeline. I could see buying a commander deck if it was decent.
I think we can all agree on the following:
"Assassin's Creed fans will be happy at the idea that they get the IP added to the game"
"The handling of and execution of this IP's addition to Magic is questionable and confusing"
"The Assassin's Creed cards might be fun for fans, but they have little impact on the game"
Reconnaissance could be good against opponents who goad your creatures and you actually don't want the creature to attack.
I am a huge assassin's creed fan, despite ubisoft constantly taking L's as a company. But I completely understand the dislike with Universe's Beyond inclusions.
That being said, I am irrefutably excited to be playing with the GOATs Ezio and Edward, but the product burn out is real. Like we just had MH3 for less than a few hours before the AC spoilers started rolling out 😭
looks like a lot of fun stuff for my erza precon to be upgraded with
I'm honestly a bit miffed how the flavour of excalibur is so so boring. Mjölnir has way better flavour sadly...
Fine Ill add Excalibur to my Emry deck. Cant resist a good flavor win
I mostly play commander so I'm very happy with this set so far
Honest question: if the set has little to no cards good for modern - why does that matter? If it’s modern legal, but doesn’t change the format, no negative effect has occurred? I can understand it might be disappointing to not have new modern cards, but nothing bad has happened, has it?
I’m ridiculously excited to build an all AC commander deck, but I still hate UB cards being legal in modern
what a great set!
Love the cold open, nothing more is needed 👍😆
Bruh, I gotta say you missed how potentially busted that God triad whatever is for affinity commanders (praying it doesn't accidentally be good in modern). You play normally then all of a sudden, there's a close to if not 0 mana 7/7 hitting the table that turns everything you have into 9/9s.
I do agree the timing is very weird Modern Horizons 3 deserved some time to breathe
I can't wait for Wizards to start making Magic about Magic again.
yeah youre right about AC set feeling really out of place AND its a mini set? So I cant even play draft with them? I cant figure out what the angle of thee being in booster packs is aside getting us to try to gamble for boring cards
People forget about wither which this staff bypasses it's a nice upgrade honestly
"Why did it have to exist at all" is the quintessential question
Im excited for this set, we bought a booster box and my sister and i got the “Secret Lair Alert” 🚨
And order the assassin‘s Creed version too 😂
Did anyone else think of that video of the T-Rex with the sword when he was talking about Ghalta and Excalibur? No? Just me?
That was a fun 20 second video! :)
You’re the man, Prof!
