Was thinking this same thing. Camping World sells little, portable fridge fans that run off of two D batteries that work really well to circulate the cold air. I use one in my RV fridge.
If you didn't toss the holding plate you can probably use that. The old holding plate has some type of liquid that freezes at a temperature well below 32F, probably around 0F. And it works on the solid to liquid phase change of the material. Just like ice. When you put ice in a cooler but colder. Just put it between the two plates that stay together.
Oh , too bad I was in the hospital for the last 3 weeks. I could have been your chauffeur around town. Steveston Marine and Hardware is a great company. Very much a goto boaters shop. They are just a 5 minute drive from me. If you guys need anything around the lower mainland just let me know. I got lots of time on my hands.
I like to run keel cooling on any powered vessel. Alternatively, a heat exchanger with cooling sea water vented overboard, and having no wet exhausts. Wet exhausts use more fuel and when water remains in them are the ruin of many a good engine. On a yacht they may be thought to be necessary, but I doubt they are. Silencers and screened exhaust outlets can be fitted by running the pip e inside through-draft forced ventilation, screened to prevent burns Samson posts supporting deck house roofs or lowering dinghy davits, topped with a rain-proof lifting cover to exclude moisture when engine is not running.
I must have ice..lol!! I drink vitamin water dragon fruit.an I put a bottle in freezer for an hour or 2. An take it out hit it against the table an it turns to silky ice.... gotta have it...try it with bottled water works great!! Glad your fridges work... changes everything
Hook up a few gallon accumulator tank after your water pump. It has an inflated bladder inside that compresses with the water being pumped in until the pump stops. When you open a tap the bladder is what pushes the water out of the tap and will make the pump not "short cycle". Cheers y'all 🍻
I am very impressed with your skills and courage to tackle pretty much any task! Kudos! Been watching a few other channels of folks cruising in those areas and am impressed with the beauty being shared with us. You guys will love what's in store for your senses! I am looking forward to sharing your adventures!
Next time you do a install like that one you always start thermostat at lowest level and each hour you walk it up a setting until it's at max don't remember what the reason was but how I was taught to do it
Billie ur a very clever young man, and u should take ur shirt off more often 🤣 did u reseal the doors? Really proud of u both, how is the new catamaran coming along? Looking forward to seeing more of Canada. 🌈🇦🇺
Most fridges have there freezer on top but newer one are reversed but all of them have a fan built in to blow the cold air from the freezer to the fridge once it hits what the thermostat is set at the fan will shut of I missed the fan if you have one
What kind of work do you do that let’s you live that life style ? I’m 65 and haven’t figured that out yet ! I would have loved to do that in my 30’s , it’s to late for me but maybe someone could benefit from your knowledge!
Nice work. Hopefully Sierra now has cold water. I can't wait to see you stalk and catch the oysters. I have heard that BC oysters are pretty frisky and can lead you on a good chase.
You could possibly get a small 12v fans , like in a ccomputer,. The size to move the cold air from the cold plate side over to the other side. That's how home refrigerator in houses work.
Hey Guys!!!! Great job on hooking up the Genset And Refrigeration unit!!! Just an FYI for future reference, Lol, Ya dont catch an oyster, Ya PICK an oyster or oysters, Lmao!!!! Love watchin ya vids an seein all the neat stuff yall do and some of the sights are truly mind blowing!!!Just gorgeous places you guys are so lucky to get to experience, Until next time take care n stay safe!!!
The icemaker- oh no. I was actually going to ask if you were happy with that unit. I looked on the internet this afternoon for ice makers since I saw you picked yours up in an earlier video. How did it break and will you buy another one. Different maker? If you remember let me know?
That water pump can be a lot quieter. If you suspend the pump on threaded rods. So the pump mounts sit on a rubber ring then a spring and then another rubber ring. This isolates the pump from the hull. Looks like cold water is on the way. Are you putting in meters to the generator to the wheelhouse?
Hey you about the fridge: - I saw kind of cooling units that contain a reservoir for cold. That might be quite useful (waeco?) - What I liked on sailboats are cooling units that have a ventilator on the cold side so if the fridge is well stuffed, you get it cold much faster. - Tip at no costs: The compressor normally comes with a fan. But in sailboats that fan only pushes the warm air around. If you are able to guide the air that warm and cold side are well separated and it gets fresh cold air it will work less time - consuming less energy.
So one idea regarding your fridge setup would be to go to a computer supplies store and pick up a cpu cooling fan, they are cheap, quiet and use hardly any power. Then blow some of the cold air through those round vents from your freezer unit over to your fridge unit, otherwise I suspect that your fridge unit will pretty much be at room temperature all the time.
Guys I really wish your videos were more up to date. If you have not already sold your DeFever trawler, I would like to suggest that you try to find some way of keeping the boat as your second home so that you can continue to cruise the PNW during the summer months. My opinion, your state of Florida, the Caribbean and the sea of Cortez are all going to get too hot in the not too distant future for you to enjoy sailing in that part of the world for most of the year. And if you guys are anything like me, even if you could buy a different boat to cruise the PNW, you would not enjoy that boat as much as the boat that you spent so much of your time and energy in restoring. You guys are also the perfect couple to show what the PNW has to offer in the way of cruising and also hiking in the surrounding area. ( If your dog Jetty could talk she would also probably tell you that her most favorite days are when she gets to hike and explore the PNW woods in cool weather with her two other pack members 🐾 😉)
I come from rvs not boats but they use the same domestic fridges. Absorbtion fridges really perform poorly and we opted to go to home Depot and swap out for a conventional type fridge. Cost was about 400 and the fridge by far out performed the absorbtion models
Sierra, I have the same model counter top ice maker you have. It's about 18 months old and is still going strong but it must be cleaned often. My observations from using it is this... You must PRE CHARGED the water reservoir with COLD WATER, i.e. - let the ice maker run and dump the ice into the water reservoir until it's full. Once the reservoir is cold enough and it is making large ice cubes on its eight minute programmed cycle (cubes about thumb tip size) start dumping the ice tray into your shore powered freezer to bring the created ice cube's temperature down below freezing before using it. If you use the ice straight out of the ice maker and its TEMP IS ABOVE freezing and it will instantly melt when used in a beverage. It must be frozen in the freezer before use. Pre-freezing your countertop ice maker ice cubes will change YOUR ICE CUBE GAME. When the cubes are frozen below FREEZING the cubes will actually make a "tinking" sound, when they are added to your glass
It's going to be so nice to have ice water. U got a better unite then what home Depot has.my ac hooked up the same way and it's freezing in here when it's on
Did Sierra get her ice cubes? This is critical information Billy, you can't leave us hanging like this 🤪🥺😊😁 I like that you reused the original icebox on the boat. Isn't that a little too far to run the lines for the compressors? Maybe it just looked like it was on camera.
My mom and her husband lived on their catamaran for a while. The boat has been gone for about a decade, but those foldable bikes remain in use! I can never get past the size of the wheels.
that eutectic tank would have been better - they take time to get down to temp but then depending on size of tank they can keep things frozen or cold for days - but if spare solar or other power they can be recharged when still working and just refreeze only part of the coolant eg at 80% back to 100% in a short time - We used these in the Australian bush years ago when off grid and would keep our food frozen in a 12 cubic foot freezer for 7 - 10 days without power (no solar panels then) and we kept them going if needed by 12v from the truck or a gennie if we had one running plus any other power we came across - You can have a defacto eutectic effect by keeping your fridge or freezer fully stocked eg lots of frozen water bottles and very little airspace
Lines were attached and pre-charged with refrigerant. The connections are sealed until they are connected then seal with their new connections immediately
Sorry for the late ask on this but how did you find a yard that would allow you to work on the boat? I have been looking where I am and have so far struck out?
There are not many out there! The best you can do is Google DIY boat yard and maybe join some boating Facebook groups to see if anyone has any suggestions:) where are you located??
Do not be surprised if it does not work like you think. For one Wood in a freezer or Fridge NOT a good idea and there is a reason why Fridges and freezers have a complete seal. It is to hold the cold inside so the pump does not over work as small freezers like you have should only need about 200W unit the fridge about 120w to keep things cold. Wood is not good for cold as does not act like glass plate of ceramic even plastic Perspex I think you call it Plexiglass. Which is easy to cut to size as just ask the seller or look on line.
Yall do great videos. Informative and entertaining. Just somebody please explain the channel name. I have been watching since you did the truck camper and I'm yet to learn what tula is, represents, or anything and I wonder this every video.
I believe that Tula was the name of the boat Billy had when he first started the channel. It's worth watching the series from the beginning. All of your questions will be answered.
You might want to consider a small 12 volt fan inside your fridge. Moving air will bring down the temp.
Yes you can use a small computer fan. Super small and not a lot of power.
Was thinking this same thing. Camping World sells little, portable fridge fans that run off of two D batteries that work really well to circulate the cold air. I use one in my RV fridge.
Well hello.., Billy u r so talented and Sierra don’t worry cause Billy will give u ur cold water soon.., enjoy the Canadian water

Sierra does not ask for much, but she does like her cold water. Small price to pay for such an Angel!

Jetty likes that fridge.
it boggles the mind this channel only has 195k subscribers for such quality content
Billy is so good at this stuff. His attitude when tackling tasks is impressive.

I really love the way you explain and do projects! Must keep the Admiral supplied with chilly water. Happy Valentines Day❤❤

Billy has gained so much experience working with mechanical systems as electrical systems and I enjoy watching his wizardry at work! So satisfying!
Billy, your knowledge and skill sets are impressive. Where did you learn how to be so handy?
Good job. Smart installation. Like you said later a clean up for lines.
It's always something 🙄. It's even better that you are a DIY couple. Thanks for sharing.
You done some cool repairs on this video now she can have her cold water lol. Stay safe

You have the best engine room well ventilated. Awesome
Nice video good repair on fridge

Nice to see the ship getting another great update 2x⚡
Nice work. Hopefully Sierra now has cold water. I can't wait to see you stalk and catch the oysters. I have heard that BC oysters are pretty frisky and can lead you on a good chase.
Our B.C. oysters are very elusive. They're almost as fast as a rock on the beach. Lol
You could possibly get a small 12v fans , like in a ccomputer,. The size to move the cold air from the cold plate side over to the other side. That's how home refrigerator in houses work.
it was better to mount the internal evaporators at the top of the refrigerator, the heat stays at the top and the cold goes at the bottom ....
@tulasendlesssummer01 sorry I don't have telegramm
You might also consider a second compressor on one of your engines.
Very cool following you guys congrats all this boat!
Good work
You guys deserve so much respect for the work you have done to the boat, it would be indescribable to live on it.
Hey Guys!!!! Great job on hooking up the Genset And Refrigeration unit!!! Just an FYI for future reference, Lol, Ya dont catch an oyster, Ya PICK an oyster or oysters, Lmao!!!! Are you putting in meters to the generator to the wheelhouse?
Before you hooked up the refrigerant lines on the refrigerator kit , did you draw a vacuum on the empty lines first?

Aren't you supposed to mount the cool-plates at the top? Because hot air rises and cool air sinks

loved vancouver when we visited hope you enjoyed granville island brewery
That is awesome on the generator from the patreon, it is very nice of them to do that, I bless him or her who donated and you guys

Remember that island that you guys couldn’t pull into in your catamaran what was the name of that island?
Vancouver, Grandville Island. My almost home area.
It's going to be so nice to have ice water. U got a better unite then what home Depot has.my ac hooked up the same way and it's freezing in here when it's on
New sport. Shakespeare antennae bike jousting.
I think it would be a good idea efficiency wise to install a 12 volt fan or two to circulate the air in the fridge.
You guys are doing great continuing to improve your boat with the addition of both a generator and on board refrigeration.
You should go to Ketchikan, Alaska. That way you can see the beautiful Inside Passage. There are plenty of fuel stops along the way.
You go Billy!!
Great to see you guys!
Getting cool things done‼️ Projects are interesting.
Great job.😁
Haha. Jetti stealing the show in the begining.
How many months behind are your videos? I live in Vancouver and it looks like this was sometime in August 22?
I have waited so long for a new video. Love watching guys adventure keep them coming ❤️
Welcome to west coast Canada! Hope you guys visit the capital…
We have the same exact NextGen, circa ‘05. Smallest footprint made for over 5kW.
Did Sierra get her ice cubes? This is critical information Billy, you can't leave us hanging like this 🤪🥺😊😁

What lure do you use tula catch Da oysters?
Some in engine room are missing , but glad to see you are double clamping. 👍👍👍
Eutectic, best type
The NextGen is what it is....curious as to what generator you have speced for the new boat?
You guys are doing some level up restoration! I hope to see you 2 get a top price for this boat.
You guys being sponsored by a teeth whitener? I have to wear sunglasses while watching now. 😎😁
Billy looks like an astronaut on the ISS when he is in the engine room.
Love the videos guys !
What is the “fuel return” for?
Cool!!
It has not been 85° in Vancouver. 8, maybe
Hope you didn't have to chase the oysters too far to "catch" them.
Did you put the lines in a vacuum or at least purge the lines with some refrigerant?
Lines were attached and pre-charged with refrigerant. The connections are sealed until they are connected then seal with their new connections immediately
Reach out to Capt. RICK Moore (Sophisticated Lady) he's a refrigerator dude- also!
Great Are you guys now out of sailboats and switching back to trawlers???????????
Sorry for the late ask on this but how did you find a yard that would allow you to work on the boat? I have been looking where I am and have so far struck out?
There are not many out there! The best you can do is Google DIY boat yard and maybe join some boating Facebook groups to see if anyone has any suggestions:) where are you located??
Billy seems to enjoy the mechanical aspects of the trawler. I'll bet he is already missing this boat.
I thought the water pump noise was Jetty growling. Had me wondering what you did to upset her.
Do not be surprised if it does not work like you think. For one Wood in a freezer or Fridge NOT a good idea and there is a reason why Fridges and freezers have a complete seal.
