Oh the river knows your name And your tears falling like the rain All around you suffering and pain Oh the river knows your name And the river hears you cry As the lightning cracks the open sky As your Momma sings a lullaby Oh the river she knows why Let the river wash you down Beneath the surface With a rushing sound Like a freight train passing through a town Let the river wash you down Let the river take away All the words That you and I could never say In the silence Darling let us pray Let the river take it all away Oh the river knows your name From the Brazos to the Wabash To the Seine No two journeys Are ever quite the same But the river knows your name Oh the river knows your name
We can all love "Have a little Faith" and all, and I really do... But then to see John here playing this gorgeous song, as brittle and vulnerable and touching as it is... Can people please see musical talent for what it is? Ears & eyes wide open? I am inclined to say "Thanks, John!" as if you're doing us a favor. Yet it is obvious that you are doing yourself the Greatest of Favors by making such wonderful music, and surprise & transcend yourself with it. Like any Great Artist does; and must do. Still: I wanna thank you Sir.
Growing up in Morrisville, Pa. along the the banks of the Delaware River my whole life (49 yrs) with a freight train running through the center of town, i think of my two older brothers who both decided to end their lives (one in 1982 & the other in 2010) very close to the banks of the river. I listen to this song & think of them every time. So, to Michael & Tommy, i dedicate this song to both of you, & pray that anyone who is suffering with a disorder such as depression, anxiety, etc. is able to get the help they need to deal with their pain.
I live by the Ternoise river, just here in France, the river knows my sins, my bad behavior, my love of all the woman in the world, she knows my heart is a big place, she knows my love of God, she knows my name, Johnny.
Ackmed82: I´m sure you will... but i haven´t money enough to do it :( Besides tht i live high up in the most northen part of Sweden. Very bad options for travelling by aeroplane and train. Expensive.
Ryan Adams totally stole this song and made "I love you but I don't know what to say" which isn't a bad thing.. Just saying I noticed the similarity.. Anyone else agree?
Played at my dad's funeral... he chose it. So deep
This is a lyrical painting by the man the myth the Legend. Sitting at the feet of the master. The greatest songwriter of our time.
I have loved his lyrics for over 30 years. He is an American Treasure.
Oh the river knows your name
And your tears falling like the rain
All around you suffering and pain
Oh the river knows your name
And the river hears you cry
As the lightning cracks the open sky
As your Momma sings a lullaby
Oh the river she knows why
Let the river wash you down
Beneath the surface
With a rushing sound
Like a freight train passing through a town
Let the river wash you down
Let the river take away
All the words
That you and I could never say
In the silence Darling let us pray
Let the river take it all away
Oh the river knows your name
From the Brazos to the Wabash
To the Seine
No two journeys
Are ever quite the same
But the river knows your name
Oh the river knows your name
Beautiful song - so authentic and forlorn. It comes and passes like a freight train through a lonely town.
its a shame folks like this dont get the radio time they deserve

Lovely post. I’ve lived along the Schuylkill River here in Chester County, PA all my life.
Songwriting at it`s best. Mr. Hiatt. No overdubs, no FX, just pure!!!
I love this song, the whole Walk On album plays like this
Always loved this song. Thanks 🙏 for this.
All you ever need is a great song, an outstanding voice and a guitar that sounds good and in tune.
Loved the song. Thank you for sharing

He says all i want that i could have said, and i´m sure "my" river knows my name. Thank you John and antsrun. Sorry for my bad English.

This is the first song I ever really learned on guitar. Still, it sound like something really lush coming from John Hyatt. So, I'm still learning.
thanks for uploading!!!!
UA-cam fails. You can't like it more than once.
1:15 - *I'M NOT TOUCHING YOU! I'M NOT TOUCHING YOU!! CAN'T GET MAD IF I'M NOT TOUCHING YOU!!!!*

Not just awesome-better!
I love this song and John's music but his voice here is a bit weak. I think I've seen a better version on YT. I think I'll look for it now.
Ryan Adams totally stole this song and made "I love you but I don't know what to say" which isn't a bad thing.. Just saying I noticed the similarity.. Anyone else agree?
It isnt country its folk.
You're wrong on both counts... it's just John.
