One of the greatest songs ever written in my opin....I met Mr Hiatt after he had performed a blues set and mentioned how much I wish he had played that song...I could see how that song affected him and I told him I was sorry to bring it up but that song just goes right through my heart like no other...he said...where are you from?...I told him...he said I will play it next time I come to your town....he didn't the first time but he did the second time...It was amazing- his daughter was in the audience and it was such an honor to hear that masterpiece and he is such a courageous artist to turn that tragedy into something beautiful that he shared with the world! Only an artist can do that.....
In the Netherlands you only hear have a little faith in me. But when you are willing to dig deeper into his discography it's like a journey through past present and future. Only a select few of singer songwriters are capable of giving you such a feeling. And John Hiatt is one of the greatest
I've seen John at least 10 times. In everything he does he never fails to confirm that he is one of the true genius songwriters and performers of our time.
I liked the song more before I read that. Great songs, like this one, can be interpreted different ways. I wonder why Mr. Hiatt chose to put those lyrics to an lilting melody and an upbeat, driving rhythm.
My good friend shot himself mother's day. Left his wife, and daughter Lilly. I hate the strength of the parallel. Bless your enemies, pray for those who hate you.
I Heard his songs in 1987 for the First Time in a record shop in Edinburgh. Bring the family in particular. I purchased It. I liked also slow tuning very much.
Wow; I didn't know about that origin of that song. It's one of my favorites. My dear wife Carol and I are big John Hiatt fans; we saw him at the Strawberry Music festival in N California years ago. Several times over the years. She just died a couple of weeks ago. I'm putting together a set to play at her send-off. Several Hiatt songs. I feel like I'm dying inside 💔 This music is keeping me alive.
I’m so sorry for your loss it’s such a difficult terrain to travel and music might be one of the few decent refuges My partner has been gone 6 years 4 months and I still feel it so profoundly Go as well as you can sir
@Grt120453 Thank you for the kind words 🙏. We're having a gathering and Remembrance next weekend. This is very hard to get through, but I will make it some how. Be well!
Hello I really do appreciate you for being a big fan thank you for your wonderful comments on my post it really means a lot to me.I sincerely hope you never stop listening to my music…..❤️
You stated that very accurately! Mr Hiatt is a true musical icon...Strange how things change isn't it? John is still playing and singing as good as ever. In a way its like a great quarter back who can not compete in todays game with bad knees who is just a memory to those who remember him when! But, John can play on and on. Today he goes where the gigs are I guess. One thing sure, his music remains gold plated in a changing world where Bill Clinton gives speeches to stay in the game.
I can't hear this song and not think of the scene in "Lonesome Dove" when Ellie leaves July johnson with a shady bunch on a flatboat. If you watch that wonderful video, you will have to agree with me.
Awesome!! And i love the scene of children hearing real music, not the usual limp lyrics that they are usually exposed to. I wonder what brand of guitar he was playing? It is beautiful and has a great tone to it.
John Hiatt is one of our foremost songwriters (across all genres) and an amazing performer. The people in this audience are just sitting there like lumps. I hope this isn't representative of Ann Arbor in general. How can you listen to John and now at least tap your effing foot? Oh well. Rock on, John!
They know how special it was to hear John Hiatt in that setting and they were LISTENING. It was not a rock concert, dance hall, or tavern - all places one might expect more animated audiences.
I love you, John. I feel for so many acoustic legends whom struggle trying to amplify acoustics. This guitar prolly sounds great unplugged, but I am not a fan of the piezo representation of this and many other wonderful acoustics. Such a drag. I wonder what John feels is the best system that doesn't colour the natural sound of his acoustics.
I agree Sarah. Actions speak more than words too. Some have 0 respect for others. I'm wondering why people have babies here. Not the appropriate place for infants and children. So they can start crying and ruin the show for everyone else? I would be pissed if I was there.

There is no "genre" to describe John Hiatt. He stands alone.
Imagine stumbling unknowingly into a Borders and coming across this legend giving such an intimate performance!
It makes me weep that this man is not a music legend. Big love from England ❤

John's the total package and I really like the way he plays that jumbo guitar on this song.
Beautiful song. John Hiatt is the real thing.
What a great place to see a solo performer. Especially this guy. Great acoustic guitar work
This is what greatness is all about , how lucky we are to live in such a great country" America"!! and have amazing talent that to enjoy .
JJ CALE . TONY JOE WHITE . JOHN HIATT
myvheroes....
Saw John on this album's tour. Just John, his guitar and his feet for percussion. One of the best shows I have ever seen.
Deceptively simple song. He's singing about the suicide of his wife, when their daughter Lilly was still a baby. This song gives me chills.
Without a doubt, Hiatt’s life was in the shitter by the mid 80s. Thankfully, he and Lily made it through to the other side!
I didn't know that, wow, adds a whole new dimension to this song, Thanks!
@@cjrichards7008 same here, had no idea, that takes this from a 10 of 10 to a 12 on the amazing scale

I get to see/hear him tomorrow night in Bloomington, Indiana....he is truly a Hoosier Treasure.....
Wonderful; I’ve listened to this a dozen times. What a thrill it would’ve been to have heard it live. ❤️ 🎶
Such a legend. One of the best song writers of all time.
Agreed!
You have given us so much. Thank you John.
I miss Borders.

No description needed . Amy
1:14 just a baby daughter walking by
Fantastic of course, but what is the meaning of “like a rusty shot in a hollow sky”?
Pity he is in a book store - bet most of the audience had no idea he is a living legend!
Sarah dumbass
Sarah you are a special kind of stupid
That's what I was thinking, too. The audience looked rather unmoved.
?? most songwriters do small venues.. John has the pull to do large and small venues, pay huge to his pull as an artist and songwriter

...Why. T.F. is he playing in a Borders Books ???
Sad to see this...
