  • Timing belt replacement done the correct way, any questions feel free to ask.
    I can and will do the timing belt on these engines, if thats something you would be interested in, again please ask.
    Thanks
    Willvg
    NOTE: this procedure is very important. Timing belt failure is possibly the biggest killer of these engines, either because most mechanics shy away from it and it doesnt get done, or if mechanics do not do the job correctly!

    Cool video. I wish there was much more light. How`s your car now?

    I'm guessing the cam lock tool goes into the cam shaft after the rear pulley is removed.. I couldn't much tell from the video.
    I'm a VW tech, and this is a VW built engine (although, this is the first I've ever had to deal with one of these), so the pump lock tool looks a lot like VW's 4- cylinder diesel pump lock tool- I'm guessing the cam lock tool looks familiar to this one also (the 4mm piece of steel you spoke of in this video). I'll update my comment after I'm done (the VW 4 cylinder Diesel tools aren't that bad to locate, and they might be the same).

    A quick Q, my '95 940 diesel needs a cambelt change and I'm struggling to get a reasonable quote for it. What sort of money should I be looking to pay to get it done? I've run redblock cars for many years but this is my first diesel example. I love the car and engine, and am keen to get it done properly!

      I just quickly knocked together this video after a friend asked about some of the things you need to know about doing the job, as you can see. There is lots !
      Next time i do a timing belt i will be sure to film it if there is interest in it.

    The Needed Torque on that bolt is huge.
    How did you achieve it??? Because your engine is on a pallet....did you have helpers?

    • @willvangemeren2661
      @willvangemeren2661  5 років тому +1

      The engine was on a stand when I built it , but you have to be strong to do it with one hand for sure!

    • @ikutiap5923
      @ikutiap5923 5 років тому +1

      Will Van Gemeren
      So on the stand, how did you stabilize the engine enough to give it the proper torque without tipping the engine over or breaking bolts that hold it on the stand? Im just wondering. Bc in a car it is reached easier. Big strong tool and the weight of the car does the stabilizing. But on an emgibe stand you have challenges. I felt like my d24 wants to flip over or break off the stand so i could not continue to add the proper torque

      @@ikutiap5923 I have a fairly sturdy engine stand, rated at 750kg I think. Maybe I had a friend hold the engine back as well. I can't remember, anyway. Yes that is indeed something to take into consideration

    I did not set my engine at top dead center before I took it apart so what should I do to get the cam at top dead center

    • @willvangemeren2661
      @willvangemeren2661  6 років тому +2

      Lawnmower16 2012
      To set the cam correctly, you need either the cam locking tool, or make your own using a piece of flat plate 4.50mm thick, this fits into the offset slot on the back of the cam beneath the rear pulley

    • @willvangemeren2661

    Are you a mechanic or an engine DIYer?
    If you're a mechanic for a living, I'm probably getting due for a cambelt change on my '96 D24TIC and would like to entrust the job to someone familiar with these engines. It's not something I'd dream of tackling myself.
