Jeez CAP I have to give I to you due to the amount of video’s that you manage to upload is impressive especially that the quality doesn’t suffer is great. I hope you keep it up, I don’t even have any equipment to play DCS atm (ex army JTAC & can’t work atm due to injuries etc,) as soon as I get some spare cash the first thing I’m doing is going to PC world, buy myself a newbie joystick, thrust controller, headset & finally the best gaming pc that I can afford in the shop & home, set up, download DCS. I used to be into the flying sims big time when I was in the army (British of course) I would get back to my room when I had the chance n wasn’t getting pulled down to the NAAFI bar by my mates I would spend hours & hours on the flight sims, I always was a geek on aviation & know every plane ✈️ which I would argue the it was studying at my job as I didn’t want to shoot down any innocent aircraft although my job on 2 Iraq & 2 Afgan tours was mainly, well always tagging buildings or ppl. I was trained to also visually target aircraft if they were an unknown but those days are over now, it certainly is all ground work now due to technology & it was a rare thing anyhow even in my days. I look forward to seeing you on DCS “if I’m allowed in your group “ as I have no idea how this work. I really need to update myself on flight sims. Anyhoo, thanks 😊 for the vids

The japanese Yokosuka MXY-7 Ohka. Essentially a manned cruise missile. These things would be dropped about 20 miles from target ships, click on their rockets, and burn in at 400-500mph. The nose of the plane was a MASSIVE semi-armorpiercing, 2600 pound warhead. The destroyer Mannert L. Abele was hit by one of these things and cut right in half.
Their flaw was the carrier aircraft. the Betties had to get within 20 miles of the target, and with radar, and cap... the betties were easy targets.
However they were also designed to be launched from land, via a catapult system, the idea being they could be hidden in underground launch tubes on japanese islands and launched to target US landing ships. There was also some question then if the idea was also to launch them from surface ships or worse, the I-400 series.
If you could picture an I-400 surfacing 20 miles from a US carrier group, launching 3 of these in rapid succession, then diving. With these acting as early cruise/anti-shipping missiles.

Yea. Pretty efective stuff, if you take the morality out of it. Especialy with modern tech and propulzion, you could make some insanely efective suicide-cruise missiles that way, while super-cheap. Human pilots culd make evasive maneuvers, and fly more creativly then any kind of computer guidance. Probably get thru a lot of AA stuff, right to the target.
I can see ISIS or Taliban trying something like that, if they ever got desperate enough (and had the know-how to make them work).

"Crap AAA" - Actually, the Americans had pretty vicious AAA, especially on their carriers. During Midway, the Japanese had a dog of a time attacking Yorktown because of the AAA.
Also during Midway, the Japanese CAP chewed up the American formations that ended up coming in piecemeal. Those piecemeal attacks though buggered the Japanese at Midway because it kept the Japanese from recovering or launching more strike aircraft.

    • @JimCOsd55
      @JimCOsd55 3 роки тому

Actually it was the US piecemeal attacks that kept the carriers from being able to recover or launch aircraft. It was their sacrifice that pulled the Japanese CAP down to the deck allowing the US dive bombers to gather and launch their attacks virtually unmolested!

The Japanese 1st Air Fleet was called Kidō Butai, which means Mobile Force.
If they ran into our 3 carriers and their escorts we would definitely lose. 6 carriers to 3, more aircraft with combat experienced pilots, we had none, Japan had more escort ships for AA protection.
The carriers were Vice Admiral Nagumo's main target at Pearl and he would have sent everything at them had they been there or were spotted out at sea.
I think the only way the US would come out on top is if they could have scrambled most of the Air Corps fighters and bombers from our bases to aid in the attack.
That would be a real scenario, because the carrier group would radioed Pearl for aid. Maybe something to add CAP, but server lag might be out of control too.

It would be nice to see this with actual Japanese Zeros. The A5m used in this video was a old obsolete aircraft that was already replaced with the A6M that we know as the Zero during the war in China. The A6M is a much much better aircraft than the A5m. The easiest way to tell them apart is the A5m has fixed landing gear and a open cockpit. The Zero was much faster, with retractable landing gear, more maneuverable and had greater firepower with 2 20mm cannon. Not to mention a range in excess of 900 miles. It was superior to any fighter aircraft the US had in 41, it wasn't until the P-38 and F6F started to appear in numbers did the Japanese start to lose air superiority.

The _Ohka_ flying bomb can be considered an early cruise missile, similar to the V-1. As a matter of fact, the Germans developed a piloted V-1 for anti-ship strikes, but none were used because they couldn't build enough and few Germans were willing to commit suicide for Germany.
EDIT: USS _Pensacola_ (CA-24) was the lead ship of the _Pensacola_-class heavy cruiser line, built during the interwar years. She served the Navy from 1929 to 1948, when she was used as a target ship for the Bikini Atoll nuclear tests and subsequently scuttled. Amusingly, _Pensacola_ was escorting a convoy to the Philippines at the time of the Pearl Harbor attack, which was diverted to Brisbane after the islands were invaded.
CV stands for "Carrier Vessel." CA stands for "Cruiser, Armored" which was carried over to the heavy cruiser designation when armored cruisers became obsolete following the Great War.

    • @KRDecade2009
      @KRDecade2009 3 роки тому

I’d actually say that the Ohka was the first cruise missile. Sure the V-1 is also one but the control over the V-1 vs the Ohka is significantly different than the V-1.

There were some that were built with the model 22 with a Thermojet a rough copy of the Henkel HeS 3 that powered the He 178. Only a few were made, they were trying to over the 23 mile requirement to launch the rocket version.

  • @SilverHwk7
    @SilverHwk7 3 роки тому +1

The fleet composition is a little bit off, but that's understandable given what models are available.
Hosho was not part of the "Kido Butai," the main Japanese carrier fleet, that attacked Pearl Harbor.
The Kido Butai consisted of six fleet carriers, the Akagi, Kaga, Hiryu, Soryu, Shokaku, and Zuikaku.
USS Intrepid didn't come in until the end of the war. The US carrier flight at the time of the attack was kind of scattered about. USS Enterprise was the only one near-ish to Pearl Harbor; her sisters Hornet and Yorktown were over in the Atlantic, but would be in the Pacific in a few months. Lexington was over near Midway; her sister Saratoga was on her way to California.

Yeah not to mention that the Japanese in this scenario are using A5m which were already obsolete and replaced by the A6M "zero" which was actually a much better fighter than anything the US had in 41. The Zero was far better than the f4f Wildcat. The Bearcat is a different beast entirely even if it superficially looks similar to a wildcat. Even the F6f hellcat was a massive upgrade compared to the F4f. Bearcats vs A5m would be like using super hornets to fight Mig-15

So a Russian fleet and a Chinese fleet. Wouldn’t be much of a challenge for modern battle groups. The modern carrier, associated equipment and munitions would leave a ww2 fleet sinking quickly to the bottom. Now add in the cruisers, destroyers, and attack subs you will see it’s basically target practice for them.

    • @jonlamontagne
      @jonlamontagne 3 роки тому +1

@Self identify as a AR-15 that is more or less what I am saying it is hard to convey through written text and making it as short as possible. I also agree the modern fleet would slaughter them. But it would look beautiful and stunning watching all the warships moving forward to attack, not to mention those planes in the sky be it Bettys or Zeros up against F-18 and F-14s and all the planes in between both sides. Maybe even have a fair amount of Japanese aircraft in the sky that are coming from a "base" before the battle starts so they can meet up or just take the fight to the US carrier group. So the Japanese carriers are full and sending all of their planes. This way we can see if they can over saturate the defense with SM2s flying around streaks of smoke from the Harpoons on the modern ships as they fire defensively. With that said I want to watch some shit blow up! HAHA Not to mention a little moral victory for Peral Harbour. I want the seas, oceans, and rivers running red with the blood of my enemies!!!! I just want to see how much destruction the fleet can do when it comes to subsonic planes instead of the barrage of supersonic Harpoons we seem to always have to wait until one of the fleets runs empty. I really enjoy this channel and throwing out an oddball request to see if it gets any traction. That way it can be a "That's a You Problem" for Cap however it turns out. I am amazed about the time and effort he puts into these 15-20 minutes clips of entertainment for us but it is probably 15-20 hours worth of work for him.

I know a decent amount of naval history, especially during the WW2 period but I don't have DCS XD. Anyway, yes they can scramble that fast. WW2 carriers can launch a entire wave very quickly. This is because they don't need to get on a catapult. Once the plane ahead of you cleared the deck, you can safely take off. This is a very quick process. Modern carriers likely can't achieve such speeds because they require catapults and there's only 2-4 sets of catapults at any one time. The whole process for attaching on to the catapult takes time as i'm sure you are well aware of.
The main limiting factor was actually arming, fueling the planes, and heating up their engines. Then they have to spot the deck. During spotting, they can't replenish their combat air patrols nor recover returning planes. So timing is key here. After launch, they take time to assemble in to formation. All in all, the process is quite long, but the launch itself is pretty expedient.
Modern carriers in turn have better layouts and hangars which make arming, fueling and spotting much quicker. Also angled deck means they can both launch and recover aircraft which WW2 ones could not do. Overall modern carriers can launch more sorties than those of WW2, but probably cannot launch a concentrated attack wave like a WW2 carrier could.

Not a naval historian… but I served. Carriers don’t just steam to a tactical heading when launching air ops. They turn into the wind & at maximum speed to get as much ‘air speed’ as possible for the launching of aircraft. This is common practice regardless of which navy you’re looking at. Speed over the deck is a fair percentage of the minimum speed required to launch an aircraft.
Hope this helps to some degree.

A rocket powered piloted bomb carried into battle by Mitsubishi G4M "Betty" bombers in a fashion not to dissimilar to anti-ship missiles like the Kh-22 Kitchen missile carried by the Tu-22M Backfire. To the sailors of the US fleet, it was known as the "Baka" (stupid) bomb. Once launched it was virtually impossible to defend against, meaning the CAP Hellcats and Corsairs tried to kill the Betty bombers carrying them before they reached launch position.

Nice scenario and could be an interesting point to talk about if we can make it work a bit better...
    General Info:
Pensacola was a CA (heavy cruiser - armed with 8'' guns)... It was designed and build before WW2 so by start of WW2 was quite old...
Ohka's would have been released outside the AA range and would have been piloted to target... The moder's could use something like a B52 or any other modern plane that has the ability to launch cruise missiles... alternatively a Harpoon missile air-launched pattern could work just as well... also, one hit by an Ohka would have been quite damaging even for a Essex Class CV (since it carried 2600punds (1200kg) of HE)...
    Suggestion for modified scenarios:
    - one pure fictional in which each side haa the same number of CVs on each side: (US should have Essex Class CVs (i.e. Intrepid) and IJN should have Taihō ( class CV which is the only IJN CV Class that can carry more than 60 airplanes (or Shōkaku class if Taiho is not modeled). IJN planes should be A7M's and B6N's with a small supplement of Betty's (carrying Ohka's of they can be made to work); while USN should have F6 Corsairs (instead of F8 Bearcats since F8s did not really take part in the war), Curtiss SB2C Helldiver and Grumman TBF Avenger (if modeled in game)
    - one "more historic''' where the IJN has its 1941 CVs (Akagi, Kaga, Sōryū, Hiryū, Shōkaku, and Zuikaku) and the USN has only 4 CVs (Enterprise, Hornet, Yorktown, Lexington) but it also has the Pearl Harbor airfield. The number of airplanes should be roughly equal... USN should start launching airplanes after IJN has launched its first wave (to simulate a scouting by air scenario)
In both cases, the win condition should be sinking of at least 2 more CVs than the other sides....

Two of these-Akagi and Hiryu-had the island built in the port side, which ended up causing too many accidents, due to the tendency of single-engine prop planes to pull to the left from the engine and propeller rotation.

When pronoiuncing Japanese, just be aware that there are basically (only) 5 vowel sounds - short A, long E, OO, short E, and long O. The English letters used for these sounds are usually a, i, u, e, and o, respectively. And just one more general rule, Japanese uses either naked vowels or (more often) a consonant followed by one of these vowels (so 2 english characters). There arent many exceptions, but you already know them - Tokyo - is "to" followed by a kind of contraction of "ki" "yo" and "u", and both "ts" and "sh" are possible consonant sounds, for instance "Mi TSU bi SHI" is composed of 4 syllabet characters ["hiragana"].
So, Japanese is actually easy to sound out from English transliterations.

The cherry blossom are the single seat, rocket, suicide weapons. They had to be carried to get in range. They tried using them in the Okinawa invasion but the air cover shot down the bombers or the host plane before they could get in range.

Bearcats were the last of the “cats” series and is considered the best NAVAL fighter of WW2. Unfortunately, they came online after WW2 ended. In real life they would have owned the sky in this scenario. Might be a scenario you revisit after DCS and mods fix the bugs.

If you'd like some Naval history advice, I'd be glad to write something up for you. But for now, Pearl Harbor Era American Forces should include Standard and Pre-Standard Battleships, but no fast Battleships. Standard Battleships are those built before, during and directly after WWI. Those include the Nevada, Pennsylvania, New Mexico, Tennessee, and Colorado classes, and the Pre Standards would be the USS New York and USS Texas. No North Carolina, South Dakota or Iowas just yet.
Carriers should include Yorktown, Saratoga, Lexington and Enterprise (Ranger was too slow to operate in the Pacific). Hornet came online shortly after Pearl Harbor. Their air wing should consist of Dauntless dive bombers, Wildcat fighters, and Devastator torpedo bombers.
Cruisers, the Pensacola is actual a good pick, the New Orleans class would be another good CA pick, while the Brooklyn Class would be a great CL pick.
At the time of Pearl Harbor, the USN had a mismash of destroyer classes, from the old 4 stack Wicks and Clemson classes, to more modern Bensons. Fletchers wouldn't exist for another year and a halfish.
Radar should be extremely rare early in the war, but was added to ships essentially whenever they came in to repair, and was given to all new production ships.

    *TIP:*
Watch any decent documentary about the "Batte of Midway" and you'll have learned a lot.
I remember a Commodore 64 wargame with the same name, and the reviewer thought the game was bugged because his US fleet was attacked by Japanese bombers *after* his forces had destroyed all Japanese carriers.
Probably the man thought that once launched, Japanese fighters and bombers would selfdestruct upon hearing of their carriers being destroyed.
    *ALSO:*
Watch the movie "Tora Tora Tora!" to get an idea what an immense undertaking it was to have six carriers launch all their planes and to have them all assembled in a coordinated strike group. It took the Japanese an hour or more to launch all their planes, all the while the previously launched planes were circling their carrier group patiently.
This also tells you how much of an incredible range the Japanese carrier launched planes had.

America had overall, really great anti-air on their ships. The problem in this sim (not counting damage models) was simply that the type of cruisers chosen where aimed mostly at surface engagements, with only a couple dual purpose 5 or 6 in guns. Some Atlanta class would have filled the sky with "boom boom"

Though I have not read a lot (if anything) about the Kamikaze bombs, I do know they were intended to be released at quite some distance from the target.
These floating bombs would then glide down onto their targets.
If the Japanese intended to use them like in this video, flying low over the target, they could have used regular bombs instead.
The whole point was to keep the bomber relatively safe, launching the bomb like modern anti shipping projectile, then turning 180 degrees to break contact asap.

Cap, the reason why you never heard of the F8F Bearcat is because, while it is an interesting airframe it never did anything all that important, It was too late to take part in WWII and as far as I am aware didn't get to engage any any aircraft in either Korean or the French-Vietnam war.
Also the torpedoes on the B4M do not show because that plane has a bomb bay and it carries the torpedo internally, the Okha bomb wings simply don't fit that why they are outside on the model. That is historically accurate.
As for the Naval stuff. I would not call myself an expert, I am an enthusiastic layman. I could talk your ear off about naval tactics and history of the era. For example, the guy in charge was not Yamamoto or Yamato it was Nagumo. A very risk averse admiral that chose not to send the third wave in, and the same guy that lost Midway for the Japanese.
But for what the Grim Rippers are doing, Air to air with ships as targets, you only need to put the ships in a hexagonal formation with the carrier in the center and you are doing that already.

The Bearcat was a great racer. It won the California to New York race twice. Oh, and that would be the astute Bearcat. 😇
The Grumman Bearcat, on the other hand, arrived too late to see action in the Pacific. I don’t think it saw any in Korea, either, having been replaced by then, or nearly replaced by then.

@@Davros-vi4qg Well, the rockets wouldn't last forever - they'd burn just long enough to impart the Ohka with a hefty amount of kinetic energy and speed to break through the enemy's AA. Towards the last leg of its flight path (depending of course on the distance to target) it was essentially a glider, but as I said, the Ohka did not have jet engines as erroneously stated in this vid.

Mind you Cap, that *rocket* driven suicide bomb was known as the Ohka, an old arse Japanese term for Sakura. But the US Navy took to calling it baka (foolish) bomb instead.
There is an unforgettable term for death daring units like this; kamikaze (divine wind). However at the time, they were called *Shinpū* Tokubetsu Kōgekitai (divine wind special attack units). Shinpu is an on'yomi (Chinese derived pronunciation) of shen feng, while kamikaze is a kun'yomi (locally Japanese derived pronunciation).
You may or may not know this Cap, but apparently the Nazis were (reluctantly) in on this but this was not inspired by Japanese successes in kamikaze attacks. They turned a v1 missile into a Fi 103R Reichenberg kamikaze pulsejet but before they were launched, Werner Baumbach and Albert Speer went to Hitler and were like "Mein fuhrer, zis *göttlicher vind* ist not in accordance viz our krieger tradition. Wir sind Deutsche, keiner Japaner. Ve are not bound to ze *buschido"*
