Hey Brian, thanks for the straight up honest review of the Arrows P-51. One thought to mention, is that all of your efforts of working through this model are what model planes is about. We have been spoiled with great innovations over the years with the progress of technology. True modeling used to take time and refinement of each model to get it to a state of fly ability. Modeling is a craft. Thank you for sharing your insights and experience with us all. A bit of history. I started on control line with my father and uncle. Thanks.
You're 100% right, and we are totally spoiled these days, which makes my life easier, but also makes a plane that's rock solid, but requires even the smallest amount of work, to SEEM, in comparison to be no-good....I choose to reject this notion. This plane is great, but does require a bit of effort to work through the battery choice and CG. Hope this message wasn't misunderstood.
Thanks for being here with us Jeff!
First reviewer to talk about the excess torque on take-off. I've struggled with this, but I've sort of minimized this by shimming the landing gear to tilt them forward.
Yeah, there was a TON of it on this plane, but once sorted, it was good!
Thankyou, thankyou ,thankyou very muchhh for making these videos for us all ,your videos really make my day🖐️😄😄
You're welcome, and thanks!
An hour ago I said "I'll just watch the first flight" lol, I can't take my eyes off a Mustang. Great video and if I didn't already have my 1.2m Mustang I'd definitely give this one a go since the price is perfect for the size.
Thanks Steve - great plane!
Brian it's real easy to open the battery pocket to except a 4s. Old butter knife , bend it and heat it up with a propane torch. I used a thin piece of sheet metal and plyers to hold it. Melted a little at a time until perfect. Added a nice layer of white duck tape so it's slick . Easy to install and remove battery. I fly mine old school. No AS3X or safe. I even pulled the tail servo and fabricated a longer servo arm. Hogged out a lot of foam to give myself lots of tail and rudder travel. I also installed metal gear aileron servos. Awesome Flying but still takes good reflexes to land on a short runway.
NICE! I was thinking about melting the foam, but wasn't sure if I'd be able to get her done...sounds like you confirmed this for me!!! Did you add nose weight, or run a bigger pack?
@@BrianPhillipsRC I just pushed the 4s 2200 50c in as far as possible and put a small piece of foam behind it so it stays in place . Thinking of adding a little weight but she's already in the ballpark as is.
You Sir are a flight master, threading needles, wow. This plane has been ordered and is on the way!
Awesome! Thanks!!! I may thread them, but sometimes leave parts of the planes in the trees - LOL ;) Just crashed my J11 tonight ;( I caught one stinking missile rail on a tree, and down she went in a furry of gravity.
i used a 12" metal ruler heated on the stove to slightly expand to opening. the roof of the cavity is thin so be careful up there. the battery cavity floor is thicker and will tolerate more. i believe that melting is better than removal. be conservative with the heat till you figure out how hot. a slow melt at a lower temp is safer than an impatiently fast melt with a hotter ruler
totally agree!
Thanks for your metal ruler method. I succeeded to make enough space for 4s lipos!
Cheers you two,, excellent info, and happily produced. Good looking plane that is flying awesome,
Glad you enjoyed it! Thanks!
Love it, Detroit Miss used my school field as a runway during WW2 really cool to see a model of it.
Nice!!!
Love the way this plane flies with the 4s pack
yes!
Brian, excellent work by you and the camera crew, as usual. Just to keep every new viewer from asking, maybe it should say somewhere in your video description: " YES, the Eflite June Nite P-51 is easier to fly than the Arrows Mustang." Personally, I was interested in the Arrows for its size and transportation advantage over my June Nite, but I'll take the better flying plane any day, even if it means having to call a UPS truck to drive me to the flying field...
I don't want to take anything away from the Arrows P-51 1.1m - it has many strengths, but it is harder to fly and harder to setup than the 1.2m from Eflite. That being said, it's not bad flying, it just takes more tweaking to get it up to snuff with it's bigger sister from another mother ;)
Being on the edge of crashing is no fun! I should know. Thanks for the helpful mod tips!
Sure thing!!!
Some people look best as they hit 40. Brian is certainly one of those
Thank you ;)
Hi Brian,
I wanted to add a tip on the Arrows P-51. I measured the Spektrum 3S 2200 Smart battery and found a Spektrum G2 4S 1800 Smart battery with the exact same dimensions, but slightly heavier. It works great! It is also 50C, so it is really snappy on this battery! I set my timer to 6 minutes and start setting up a landing at 5 minutes. For me, 6 minutes works well! 👍
excellent! Thanks
A 4S 1800 is the same size as a 3S 2200 and is what I used in my EFlite Valiant & Big Foot (upgraded the ESC to 40A).
Your flying and I can't waite to get home and watch. I could have flown yesterday ( fathers day) but got stuck working in the back 40. And man there was no wiend. That's most always never here in sw Michigan.
I hate when I have to work when it's PERFECT flying weather ;)
@@BrianPhillipsRC I bet you could dump a truck load size pile of planes in the middle of your yard and you would be roleing around in the middle of them like it's a box full of puppies. 🤣
Awesome Mustang 🔥 Nice flying Brian 🔥👍✌️
Thanks 👍
@BrianPhillipsRC
I know this is an old video but I got here because of your HH 1m Mustang video and the lack of flaps and retracts on that plane.
Could you set up the AR630 with heading hold for takeoff? Maybe set it to the bind button so it's intuitive to remember to turn off after takeoff? If I remember right that Rx is capable of heading hold, right?
I really enjoy your content and you're in the Horizon Hobby catalog I just got in the mail... Bravo sir!
Not sure about your question.
Definitely use a self leveling gyro, like safe to assist in takeoffs until you get used to it.
The main thing with the arrows is to do a slow rollout, steer with your rudder, and hold a little up elevator (like 3mm to 5mm travel) for the entire roll out.
Also, one of the biggest mistakes Brian is doing, is 100% throttle on takeoffs.
You only need about 50-60% throttle to lift off .
In short:
hold a little up elevator.
throttle up a bit slow and steady to about 60% throttle, finish throttling up to about 75 - 90% after mains have lifted.
Steer with rudder during rollout.
And DO NOT use flaps on takeoffs !!!!!!!!
I just finished my 100th flight on this.
I’m atop fan from Australia I’ve got the Apprentice STS I just got the Maule M7 Delivered. Im also building a Little Toni Balsa ARF kit for when I have more experienceIt’s when I’m not flying I’m on the simulator can’t wait until I get my first warbird keep up the awesome videos mate Cheers Robbo
Thanks Robbo ;) Wish I could use my teeny tiny amount of pull with these companies to improve distribution of these planes in NZ and Australia - seems there's quite a market for the planes there!
@@BrianPhillipsRC there sure is but we get quite afew here I was gonna get the Beaver but got the Maule M7 instead
They tip stall very easy. Lovely looking aircraft.
They can, if you slow down, they'll bite!!!!
In order to prevent the motor torque from taking the plane's off course during take-off, one should throttle up *slowly* while using the rudder to keep the plane's moving straight on the runway.
Further, one may add 2 to 3 degrees right thrust angle (viewed as sitting in the cockpit).
The initial pitch instability was probably due to the plane's being tail heavy. So the bigger and heavier 4S battery improved the balance by moving the CG forward.
Thanks for reviewing that info for us!
this is a real nice plane. I think you could almost fly this one anyplace even a smaller park.
It's a handful to get up in the air, but hand launching would be possible too.
Hello Brian,its beautiful Airplane🔝🔝🔝🔝🔝🔝
thanks master!
Love the four blade propeller Plane looks great against the clouds. When I get a new plane I fly it high and level and see how low I can get the throttle stick before it stalls so I know where the setting is for a landing. How is the Paragliding coming along?
Thanks Tim! PPG is coming along. Limited time and weather to practice, but now that our hay is cut, we'll be able to do it more, and I got blessing to land across the street too! So getting closer and closer to flying from HERE ;)
Great timing and great work Brian, Im seriously looking at this Mustang and cant seem to find any YT video other than yours that shows the quirks this warbird has. Just got the hang of my Dynam Bf109 1.20m so you could say Im familiar with P-factor, but it seems like this one has a stronger tendency. I dont remember having to use that much rudder to overcome it. Just the same I think I will get this one cause its so "purrty"😊
I was very surprised just how strong the P-Factor was, and as for "quirks" - we try not to cover for any of these things, but rather take them on, and fix them so you can see if the effort was worth while - I suspect you agree, it was ;)
@@BrianPhillipsRC Really appreciate the effort you and camera crew put into these comprehensive videos. Another thing about this model, id like to know your take on using "aileron reflex" to tame any "tip stall" tendencies. Again thanks a bunch😊
Terrific ell is a good word, braking it from terrible and fickle ,so it's apt. Your cool guys
I used 3s pack and crashed it immediately, I bought another plane 5months ago and haven't flown it yet after watching this I give it another try.
Get her NOSE HEAVY as hell! You need it!!! Also, get that rudder to the inside hole for MAX output. And don't be afraid to JANK in up into the air on the first flight...you will be ducking...so don't get too close on the left of the plane - seriously!
How does this compare to the June Night?
I like the June Nite better, but this one is cheaper - tough call ;)
Thinking of getting my first plane after building and flying a FT Tiny Trainer. Would you recommend this, the Corsair or the Trojan? Thanks!
Great info, man!! What are ur flap deflections? Thx
Brian, I got myself one of these after watching the latest Top Gun movie. The P-51 shown is so gorgeous, I couldn’t resist.
Now, after breaking it in half twice on grass field takeoffs, I’ve opted to watch your experience only to find out that I should’ve watched these before! 😂.
The plane sucks to takeoff on grass fields. It doesn’t give time to correct and although between all those flights I had luck with some takeoffs, they sure weren’t pretty.
I’ve opened up the foam to fit a 3200 4S in there, but the one thing I see nobody talking about is the ESC and motor handling that much more voltage.
Using a wattmeter, I measured 50 amps at peak RPM. The ESC on this plane is rated for 40. What are your thoughts?
My thoughts - Use it till it catches on fire, then replace it ;) (Seriously)
Now that you have the CG bettered, I suspect the grass ops are greatly improved???
@@BrianPhillipsRC haven’t gotten around to testing it just yet! 😊. I’ll let you know once I do.
@@BrianPhillipsRC before flying it, I might replace the ESC with one from a Timber X I gave up on. That should at least take care of that.
My fear is having the ESC fail, making the rest of the electronics fail on me.
Our field (Beattie Field in RI) is quite close to the Highway, thus safety is strictly enforced (with good reason).
@@BrianPhillipsRC I just managed to re-maiden my Arrows P-51 after making the proposed changes...
Definitely made a HUGE difference! Not only the CG, but the additional oomph of the 4S helps get out of trouble easily.
Arrows should make these changes; else this plane is nearly impossible to fly nicely on/from grass fields.
How did a SMART 2200 G2 fit? A 30c would probably be 10% smaller. This is like a 3-4 year old model I think, so not a big surprise it took some time to set up properly..
How were the retracts, servos, etc? This looks great.
arrows retracts are tough with relatively big retract motors. i have arrows Detroit miss and an earlier version in old crow. my old crow is flown with reckless abandon now has a hotter motor and has been smashed to bits a dozen times and the retracts still work. my fms racers are well cared for creampuffs and the retracts have intermittent failure issues and the struts are weak
Still pretty tight!
Brian, as a newcomer to the rc hobby,. I'm curious to know how long it took you to get to this advanced level of flying. And how do make those incredible sharp turns? Thanks for inspiring me to keep flying.
I've been flying for about 7 years or so...maybe a bit more. I do fly a lot more than some people, and I tend to be a bit obsessive.
I bought a 64 mm F-16 from Aliexpess RTF.
Same factory as F.M.S.
Under a subsiduary.
Put Gen 2 with all the bells and whistles as I need it to fly like a Trainer Plane right for my skill level.
What paint job and any other advise you could give me as I am waiting to unbox it .??
What is easier to fly, 1.5m, 1.2m, or 1.1m P-51? Love your videos!
1.2m - 100% hands down. June Nite - P51 bit.ly/3bU5icI
The APower 4S 2200 60C is a pretty compact pack...
I used the Gens Ace too and have okay luck
Note: one of the best beginner jets is the F-22 Raptor since it’s basically a flying wing
It really is, except the little 400mm - that thing is a blast to fly, but I think the FAN flyers I had as a kid were more under my control - LOL ;)
I think its best looking P51 of all the models out there. Quite hard to find in EU but i managed to find one. If only Eflite was in this color scheme.😅
Battery thing...its a no for me. I love to modify planes but not so it can use the battery.
Which video shows what you did to make this fly better . I have one of these on the way and am trying to get a head start
Jonathan uk😊
UNBOX BUILD RADIO SETUP (another video in the playlist for this plane), then MAIDEN FLIGHTS (the one you're watching)
Hey Brian. If you took off with the receiver in SAFE mode, wouldnt that prevent the P factor from being a problem?
Not enough control input to offset....there's the moment when airspeed makes controls go "Alive" while the SAFE and AS3X will help, they won't totally compensate for the immense P-Factor, especially if you don't have enough rudder.
I never add weight. I just always get a bigger battery. You miss out on free performance otherwise.
Yes, totally, but there are times when the you can get away possibly less weight, if you add nose weight, since you can get it further out. I also lean toward larger packs too.
I got my first big rc plane, it’s the Carbon Cub s2 1.1mm, I crashed it, broke the nose which it is fixable with glue, I am nervous about flying, do I just have to fly and crash a few times before I can get used to flying a big plane? (My other RC Planes are eachine so that’s why I’m calling it big)
bigger is usually easier, especially a high wing like that. The Arrows Husky is very easy to fly at 1.8m
1.3m, right? Plan to fly, crash, and fix....this is how it will be for a while. Don't be discouraged - this is normal, and you'll get better with practice. It takes time!
@@BrianPhillipsRC yes it’s 1.3 my bad! Also Thank you!
you keep saying only complaint is battery compartment doesn't work well with 4s,but the the was designed for 3s,might fly much better on 4s but if you change what they designed it for you need to modify to make it work, not a design problem, sorry if no one agrees with me
If the CG doesn't work out, one could complaint that it's a design issue, but I would rather just love the good of the plane ;)
I just got one of these delivered a day ago. I was looking through the manual and it has a little section important esc information. Says the stock esc has braking. But says the brake is off and they recommend the brake be off when flying? I don’t understand. Do they mean thrust reverse?
Breaking is not Thrust Reverse. Two different functions.
Breaking stops the motor actively. This can be used to prepare for Thrust Reverse, which is why we have to indicate "reverse" on "Breaking" in Avian ESC setup, but then later, we also have access to "Breaking" which is where you setup the On or Off setting, and or setup the amplitude of breaking.
Our Unbox, Build, Radio Setup will cover what's available on these planes. Please watch them for help.
Is the eflite june nite p51d easier to fly or this one? In other words which one is overall better for a beginner?
Absolutely - P51 bit.ly/3ohT4zT
👍
thanks!
What would you say is the best P 51 to fly? Or the most EZ to fly?
Eflite P-51 June Nite
@@redwineisfine my man! Thanks. I have that one.
@@oldscratch3540 flies on rails
Eflite
First! How does this plane compare to the Eflite 1.2m Mustang or the 1.1m FMS air racers?
i have all that you mention. e flite 1.2 is easier to fly with a fatter airfoil but arrows is much faster on 4s and a 2 blade 10x10. i find it to be a more advanced pilot plane with quicker response and roll rate. i absolutely love the Dage Red. it is smokin fast and easy to land but the tires are rock hard . the fms landing gear strut is weak. the retract motors are small, weak, lame, prone to premature failure. both my Dago and my Voo Doo retracts have intermittent failure and the struts bend too easy but im in love with how they fly and land. they are very light wing loading.
@@seanmolloy9422 Neat! Thanks for the info. I put an Avian 70A ESC in my 1.2m and it is now smoking hot.
@@6.5x14 am unsure of how a larger ESC would change speed performance. did you change to a more aggressive pitch 2 blade prop? that would increase current draw . 4 blade looks awesome but creates more drag and current draw than a similar sized 2 blade.
@@seanmolloy9422 No changes, somehow I get more power with the avian esc. Motor runs higher pitch.
Eflite is better, but it's also more pricey. The FMS is crazy FASSSST. This plane is a smaller June Nite. Good choice, but it is not quite as good in my opinion. Eflite does a great job, and Arrows has been great too!
i paused at 41:21 . you should have that image framed or use it as a profile pic. its an RC mag cover photo. you look so happy
LOL - Nice!
Exactly Hobbyking Durafly rebrand, it is shame and my fault that I did not buy it for less price before.
This model is not made by the same MFG that I know of. There are quite a few over in China, but this one I THINK is top flight...
Hey Brian. Have you Hurd about the 40 dollar per plane registration fee. Is this true. And do you register your planes. Is this a have to
If there's something afoot that I haven't heard about, it's probably because it hasn't happened. If you go out looking for new rules you will find some idiot bureaucrat making up some idiotic idea. You need to call your legislator and tell them to put that CRAP on ice, if it's real.
@@BrianPhillipsRC OK Brian. Thank you very much bud
use twain around the battery length wise.
That would make it wider still, right?
I slapped a long piece of clear tape on the lipo, and it worked okay. I just need to hog out some foam
can you compare this and the Arrow's Corsair?
Corsair is harder to fly, but easier to battery up. They both took more effort to get flying well than virtually any other Arrows product we reviewed, but they are good planes, and worth the small amount of effort, albeit out of the ordinary, from their line of quality planes.
Corsair has loads of P-factor...almost more than can be over-whelmed with the rudder
Could you strap the battery under the fuselage with tape and Velcro
This plane regardless of a heavier battery will probably stall on take off if on a grass strip. So much up elevator will be needed to avoid nose over that takeoff will be at too low an airspeed and unless you are quick to kick opposite rudder instead of an instinctive right aieleron, the left wing is going to eat grass. This is typical of the Arrows warbirds line up. Don't even attempt grass.
I can't say I disagree. Super short, think golf green grass, would probably work, but anything else would be an issue.
Might need some lube for the battery. Stuffing a dry, thick object into a tight hole is always gonna cause problems.
I think you rammed that one home perfectly!!! ;)
Once again, Arrows is missing the Bearcat in its line-up. Bring it back and market it better.
I keep hearing this...
Servos suck ! Want to see how you got a 4s in it. I had to hog out the rudder servo area to get max throw out of rudder. It can't even come close to book specs. 😕 I'm flying it old school. No AS3X on 3 s.
I didn't even max mine out, (rudder) but I ended p in the inside hole. Might even need to change the point on the servo too...
@@BrianPhillipsRC Take your time pulling the tail servo. It's also glued in. But once you fabricate the throw to get plenty of throw and shim the servo wheel stub the authority on the tail is real good. I also replaced the tail servo with a higher quality one as well as both Aileron servos with full metal gear from Amazon. This bird became what it was ment to be. Even flying it without AS3X / Safe. Old School is a blast , especially on 4s.
@@Bill14886 how did you put the servo?
I took out the 4 screws, but the wheel won’t come out. I loosened it and it started to come out but it hangs up. Any tips would be useful. Thanks.
So they sell a hot wire at Walmart in the craft department that is around $10. It is just a straight wire on a handle and it works fantastic for doing stuff like getting inside a fuselage to melt foam away!
You can get it in that spot? Had another subscriber suggest melting away the foam with an old knife...and I used to used 20/1000" shims, since I have a bunch of them from work projects.
@@BrianPhillipsRC That’s what I always use to get inside fuselages and tight areas. But heating up a shim like you mentioned works great to! Whatever gets the job done is the best way to do it LOL
happy fathers day brian, how many children David vero beach, fla.
Thanks David - 4 kids ;)
She's a screamer!!
sure is!
Need a higher C rated battery for it.
yeah, and to make the lipo pocket a bit larger ;)

Sorry. Good job man.
Thanks ;) (Sorry - LOL)
@@BrianPhillipsRC I was commenting without giving you the much deserved, at-a-boy.
Tape the battery & pull battery out with tap flap, just like the one to lift canopy
Sure, except the battery gets hot too....so keep that in mind - might want to wrap all the way down the length of the batter so you're pulling from BEHIND it.
Also much thanks to the Camera Crew!
Totally! I'll pass along the thanks ;)
@@BrianPhillipsRC thanks I’m watching your vids no awesome bro 👍
I saw lot of your plane taking off, landing. This plane seems to be tough to take off and landing. Too fast and agile.
yes.
Its the P-51 platform that just flies poorly.
Severe P factor makes impossible to flat turn right & gives severe throttle yaw coupling. Non streamline stubby body & wings make it touchy & unpredictable. Politely called MAUVERABLE ..I guess since WW2 P51 pilots themself didn't know which way it was going, how Germans figure & that made it a success.
I prefer Spitfire everyday over P-51, though it has its own idiosyncrasies. It not being a US plane, unfortunately never get any small Spitfires, let alone 2s brushless.
hummmm, very interesting take
The word that best describes P51's flight experience is squirrely
