- Imperial War Museum (IWM), London - what to see at the Imperial War Museum (IWM) in London in 2 hours. Let's go to London and let's visit the world famous Imperial War Museum (IWM) which is a British national museum organisation. Founded as the Imperial War Museum in 1917, the IWM museum (Imperial War Museum) was intended to record the civil and military war effort and sacrifice of Britain and its Empire during the First World War. The Imperial War Museum's remit has since expanded to include all conflicts in which British or Commonwealth forces have been involved since 1914. As of 2012, the Imperial War Museum aims "to provide for, and to encourage, the study and understanding of the history of modern war and 'wartime experience'".
The museum's collections include archives of personal and official documents, photographs, film and video material, and oral history recordings, an extensive library, a large art collection, and examples of military vehicles and aircraft, equipment, and other artefacts.

I was there in 1997, while on a business trip. My coworkers thought I was nuts, for going by myself, from the hotel, via the underground, to see this museum. If you like military history, this is the place. The museum at that time, also had a great deal about WW1, and other british military interventions, not just WW2. I was pretty surprised to see an area dedicated to the Balkan/ Salonika campaign even. It had an area based on the "Blitz" of 1940, as well. I have a picture of myself in front of "Montys" armored car. They also have a gift shop where you can buy memorabilia. I have a poster of Winston Churchill from the war. If you are a history buff, especially military history. If in the UK, gotta go here.
Hi and thank you for your comments. I agree with you, this is THE PLACE/MUSEUM to visit if you are a history buff. I have been going there for the last 10 years and I always see different things displayed.
It's a waste of time now - they gutted the whole place and filled it with a load of screens. Style over substance, another great museum cannibalised to make room for screens

I hope you can save and come to England soon. London is very expensive but its much cheaper to rent a small house for a week or two in the midlands and moreso in the North where the locals are much more friendly. I am from Cheshire near Manchester and it is expensive even for me to live in London as house prices are often 4 times the price pr square foot compared to the north. Another thing is no matter where you are in the UK you are always only around 1 hr drive to the coast due to its size. The scenery all over the UK is gorgeous as long as you get away form major cities.

Be sure to take time out for exploring outside of London. London itself barely represents what England really has to offer. When I go on holiday staying in the British Isles \i never goto London. In the Midlands and North its much cheaper and the countryside is breathtaking in beauty. You are only 1 hr MAX drive to the seaside when in Britain and so I can get a train and goto say Blackpool in just 45 mins which is awesome. Everyone visits or stays in London and it always makes me feel like I want to tell people not to go to London which by far least represents what Britain or the English life is like.
Anyways hope you really enjoy your visit:))

You state that Heinz Snaufer (sp?) was by far the greatest fighter ace of Germany during the war -- need to correct you on that...
Erich Hartmann is the man you should be talking about -- 352 confirmed victories. Over 100 German aces scored over 100 victories. Snaufer was famous because he was the highest scoring German night fighter ace.

Yes, that is correct...
I am uncertain to credit the enormous totals the German aces shot down. In the Western Desert Hans-Joachim Marseille was credited on shooting down 5 Kittihawks on a day when the RAF lost none!
Terry Shulky many of his kills were against inferior Russian aircraft he certainly would not of taken out 300 modern aircraft of the RAF.
Yes, Hartmann was the king of the hill.
Perhaps Snaufer had the record on downing Allied bombers not fighters?

Just out of interest...the building it'self was the former lunatic asylum and Hospital known as Old Bedlam.(original Royal Bethlehem.)....from which we get the English word meaning chaotic or crazy....Bedlam. It became the home of the I.W.M in in 1936.
The I.W.M has other sites around the country, including Duxford and Manchester (IWM North) and HMS Belfast.

This WAS the best military museum in the UK, but the recent renovation turned it into a gallery/exhibition space. Thousands of exhibits used to be on display and are no gone from public view. There isn't a single WW2 British or German uniform, helmet etc etc to be seen! The trench and blitz experience were removed and there are now multiple coffee and book shops where these used to be.
I agree with you 100%!! I went to the Museum in March and looked all over of an exhibit that I had seen so many times in the past, it was showing how the trains were entering and leaving Auschwitz (the person that created it had managed to show exactly the process, something no other person could put together or had done before). They had taken the whole display apart (it was occupying a large room) and when I spoke to the director, he admitted that it was a great display but the trustees decided to take it away (along with other WW2 items) in order to expand the Holocaust part of the museum..

It is a good video, although i disagree with some points, it isn't rare to see a t-34 in museums, they were heavily produced and sold througout the second world war, the korean war and was also sold to third world countries, most museums have them, U-boats were also very effective throughout the whole war not just physically but they would affect the morale of most sailors.

Probbably the best military history museum in the World. Sobering when I last visited to find artefacts of men I served with in and before First Gulf War, for some who did not come home. In my military service the numbers lost would sound normal for the first World War, and yet none know. the numbers are hidden.

Amazing.I've only seen these WWll weapons on war footage film.But seeing them in this museum I now get a true feeling of WWll armaments.The 88mm anti-tank anti-aircraft was amazing along with the Russian T-34 tank.Yes,the T-34.The tank that helped Russia win the war.

Hi, I am actually in Lebanon right now videotaping the fascinating city of Beirut!!
in addition to Rolls Royce, Packard Motors of the US manufactured many of Merlin engines under license which were used in the P51 mustang and other aircraft. Packards modern manufacturing methods really surpassed the quality of the English built engines. also the Merlin was used in the Dehavilland Mosquito bomber.

Merlins are small, fierce falcons that use surprise attacks to bring down small songbirds and shorebirds. They are powerful fliers, but you can tell them from larger falcons by their rapid wingbeats and overall dark tones. The quality of the Packard Merlin was NOT in any way superior to the RR manufactured version. Suggest you look at the manufacturing specs of both engines. The one slight difference was an oil seal which was made from a different material. They were mechanically and performance-wise identical.

Sorry but I need to correct you on the German Eagle. Hitlers bunker was not under the Reichstag and the Reichstag was built in 1894 NOT 1939. The Reich Chancellery was finished in 1939. The Reichstag and the Reich Chancellery are two completely seperate buildings about a mile from each other. The eagle is from the Reich Chancellery not the Reichstag.

Excellent video! However, @ 16:57 Mr. Stefanu states that Hitler committed suicide in his Berlin bunker. Even when this video was published in 2017 it was pretty common knowledge that Hitler survived the war and lived in south America until his death in the early 1960's.
A lot of historians would disagree with your version regarding Hitler's death..

I am well aware of the controversies surrounding Hitler's death and whereabouts about 1945, however you are mentioning here the Soviets who arrived that place where the burned body of Hitler was located at and proceeded into removing the remains. Hitler's teeth were saved and it has been proven that indeed that was his teeth.. No one wants to mention this..

I went to the Museum in '96 and came away feeling nauseus, which is unusual since my discipline is military history. The WW1 display kind of made me sick.

England should give everything back which they stole for their museums!
A shadow of its former greatness, however. Most exhibits were removed and it is now more like an art gallery. There used to be several WW2 tanks on the ground floor and more WW2 aircraft suspended from the ceiling. There was a walk-through section of a Halifax bomber ..... gone. The WW1 trench experience was fantastic .... also gone.. The entire basement level, which was packed with fascinating material was removed altogether.
I agree.. This museum is now very different compared to the first time I visited it around 2008.. I remember all the tanks on the first floor, now gone with the Russian tank left..
...glad I got to see it in '95, as a Kiwi soldier on leave from Bosnia. Wonderful memory was seeing an old veteran wearing his RTR tie, who was also visiting the museum. As an RNZAC soldier, it was confirmation that the Commonwealth ties that bond, are more stronger in some areas than in others. Fear Naught.

Dane Hart depends on how you look at it, Hartmann was the best fighter pilot, Schnaufer the best nightfighter and Rudel the best Ground attack pilot/best overall pilot of the war 🤷♂️
I don't think V1s and V2s killed 30,000 people in Britain. About 30,000 were killed in the "Blitz" 1940-1941. More people were killed in air raids later; and then between June 1944 and March 1945 about 6000 people were killed by the V weapons.
