Some of these riders forget that traffic is expecting other traffic to be at or near the speed limit. No, cars aren’t going to expect you coming at 75 in a 45 or realize how fast you are closing. It makes your space judgment experience as a car driver useless.
exactly, and often a motorbike is harder to see at a glance. I've noticed xenon lights (properly adjusted) help being seen during the day, but you have to keep a speed 'reasonable' for the type of road you are riding on. In many (most) of these clips they were riding with almost no safety margin.

I agree about passengers, if I take someone for a ride they need to have full gear on and I don't ride like show off mad man, me on the other hand, I choose to ride in T-shirts if I popping to the shops/town or going to a meeting or two in my area I live, but I still ride with proper shoes, pants and gloves and I ride within the speed limit in built up environments with lots of traffic . if I am going on highways or long rides I then get dressed in full gear.. I knowingly take the risk if I come off I am going to get nice road rash from riding in T-shirt.

05:00 California rider here... lane splitting/filtering is legal in California, but not on single-lane highways. Just because its legal doesn't mean it can be done whenever a rider feels like it. That being said, the truck driver definitely should not have intentionally swerved into the rider... Splitting/filtering requires two lanes going in the same direction, otherwise you're just illegally passing on a double yellow or in the shoulder. I know many riders who do this in California and I know many riders who have been ticketed by Highway Patrol for doing it.
Was just going to make a similar comment on this. That was not lane splitting (both lanes should be in your direction of travel). I. have my whole own set of what I consider common courtesy lane splitting rules, like only splitting the two fastest lanes. If one of those is the carpool lane, I go extra slow and cautious, if at all, on entry/exit points (not that cars always respect those, but thats where they expect to be able to change lanes in and out of the HOV lane), and so on and so on.
I don't think "lane-splitting" is the same as passing in a double yellow line zone. I would think lane splitting is only for stopped or crawling traffic.
You have made me a safer defensive driver. Thank you for burning words into my head, for example I say "side of the vehicle" when I see an that uncommon thing while driving.

Yeah, watching that guy take a breather at 16:14 makes me smile, I needed a similar thing after putting a truck down an emergency parking lane in a school zone. It's good to know I won't be leaving behind the adrenaline pumping moments going to a motorcycle.
Thanks for all you do! New rider here that's been following you for over a year. I'm glad you brought it up regarding lane position 2. There aren't many riders I see that point out the practically here in the States of lane position 2 because most default to oil, etc. I get the jist and reasoning. Being that I take in various sources, I've found that most riders on UA-cam in Europe talk about lane position 2 as a viable lane to travel in, but here in the States it's almost like a taboo. Thank you for the critical thinking piece. People need it in their lives just as much as any other decision made before, during, and after riding.
I move around in my lane, so I use 1,2 and 3. I do it because I feel like the cars pay more attention to me, maybe even get a little nervous about what I'm doing, so they stay away from me. I'm not doing it erratically, just sort of drifting from one side to the other.
Hey Dan, I appreciate you making the logical point about 'there's no oil in the middle of the lane when traveling' and how that largely applies to an intersection. I've been riding in 1 or 3 on the highway trying to avoid 2/middle most of the time but being comfortable using 2 keep my options open.
Lane position 2 where I live has the most debris. Not oil. Rocks, dirt. Almost went down on a bend that had rocks all over position 2 (because vehicle tires cleared position 1 and 3) with my girl on the back while riding in the middle of my lane. The least chance for debris is lane position 1 and 3. I choose position 1 for that reason. Far more safe for me
Have to agree with this. I usually pick position one (not in a turn or bend, though) because pos.1 gives me better line of sight plus less debris. Depending on the turn or bend, pos. 1 or 3. Unless country roads when farm vehicles leave a lot of mud on the road, then pos. 2 is better.
He’s using town/city as his example but, that’s not including high traffic highways or interstates where you can visually see the build up of garbage in the center over time. Depending on where you live, you can notice that the lane is not even with the center being slightly elevated. Road maintenance, climate also place a factor in how trash builds up. I’ve recently seen a video where the guy loses traction due to debris in the center just after the turn apex. He’s really focusing on oil but, fresh oil deposits are not the only concern when it comes to the “grease pit” aka lane 2.

@4:50 I'm not a legal expert especially in California law but it doesn't seem like lane-splitting makes sense in a single lane, no passing zone. It just seems like illegal passing. What I usually see as lane splitting or filtering involves passing in the space between two lanes in the same direction. Once you're passing on the outside over a double yellow it just seems like illegal passing and unsafe to me. 🤷♂️
Love your videos but I have one thing on my mind when talking about cornering on number 2 position. Great for doing this outside the cities but in city centres, the oil is not only near intersections. In Europe we have a lot of older cities that have a problem with traffic. Many of the roads are covered in oil, so I’d go for no3 here, but it depends on conditions, my speed etc. Cheers man
Road position 2 is my favourite riding area, you have room to move either side of the lane and the road is often less worn. In dry conditions it's my go to.
as a mechanic Dan let me back you up. Unless a car has a massive leak literally dripping out, it will blowback onto the frame and underbody as soon as the vehicle is over 25 mph.

8:40 as a firefighter/EMT myself, this is one hell of an MOI. The dude operating the motorcycle is 100% responsible for her coming off of that machine. I basically have four rules for my passenger whenever I put somebody on the back of my machine. And then I also don’t do stupid shit because I’m trying to protect my passenger as well as myself. 40 years of riding currently on a 2023, MT 10. Took my daughter out on it. You bet your ass we had a dBrief before the ride and I didn’t do stupid shit.
Traumatic what now? I got in an accident last year. Driver parked on the shoulder pulled a u-turn right in front of me. He stopped in the middle of the road because suvs dont have incredible turning radius. Ended up t boning right in his front fender trying to go around and i buste my nuts on the tank when i flew over it, rolled on the hood and got back up on the other side of the car. I wish this on NOBODY i had purple/black balls the size of golfballs for two weeks and couldnt walk normally. Oh and dont get me started on going down stairs good lord
21:00 I live on the east coast with plenty of daily traffic jams on many surface streets and highways. Vehicles are backed up and stopped along the roadway dripping away every day. When you roll through these spaces when traffic is light, you can find yourself in some trouble if in position 2, especially in a curve.
@8:00 the other thing to consider is when you ride solo and accelerate hard, you move back on the seat and the seat back stops you. Pillion riders don't have this so you need to ride with that in mind.
My girlfriend rarely rides with me, but when she does it's never on one of the sport bikes, it's only on the ADV bike. She has a good helmet and gloves but she doesn't have gear. That being said I make sure she always wears a thick jacket, pants, and boots that cover the ankle.
@aidencoder 👏. Ever gone done in denim at 35mph. Does pretty good really. Slide resistant clothing is definitely better. My wool coat did a 45mph slide on rough pavement and didn't even get a hole in it.

I got a really cool belt that has handles. I use it when I have a passenger on my bike. It works great. I never ride anyone without full gear and the belt.

As with many other subjects that were intended to prepare you for adulthood, Drivers Ed is no longer taught in schools, or to the degree they once were. Many of these crashes could be avoided by using the same principles as driving a car. This, along with safety advances such as ABS/Traction Control, lane assist further dumb down the operator's skill level and imperative to look/plan ahead. Now add the distraction of phones.
The Guy near the end in the rain where the bus nearly collects him then the other guy pulls along side. Thats the Crown Island and ring road in Nottinghamshire UK, terrible road and roundabout
There is only oil on road where traffic is slow. Man when it rains the interstate out my way does have a rainbow effect from all the oil. Couple days ago I guess a car wrecked into the fast lane guard wire an put alot of car fluids in the road in lane position 1 an 2. I hit that damn oil the other morning doing over 80 an my back tire an front immediately slid sideways an gave me a small death wobble. I was able to overcome it though.
8:29 my wife has a bad back so doesn’t ride with me anymore but they make those handles you can bolt onto the tank gas. We planned on getting one for her to grip
I got a belt off Amazon that has handles. I use it when my wife or daughter ride with me. Handles on the bike would be better though. I wouldn't feel safe with them just hanging onto my jacket.
Someone ignorant of CA law here. I know lane splitting is legal there, but does that include splitting to the left into oncoming traffic? I always assumed it allowed for splitting lanes which were travelling in the same direction. In either case, splitting between two lanes moving in opposite directions seems moronic.
California defines lane splitting as riding between /two/ lanes going in the same direction. What's was shown here is not splitting and is illegal. You can't go around on the double yellow, the shoulder, or between a turn lane and a straight-through lane. That said, it's always illegal to try to run someone off the road and is attempted manslaughter, I think.
Don't worry, I think most CA riders are also ignorant of the law. All they know is the mantra "lane splitting is legal in CA" without actually knowing what the law says. We just legalized lane filtering in CO and I've already started seeing videos of riders getting mad at cars even though the rider isn't actually following the law.
24:40 is rider's fault. You keep your lane in an intersection and you don;t make a left turn and end up on the right lane. Do your turn, keep the lane, you can change later. Goes for any vehicle.
just curious now but when looking at the riders "clock" at their speeds they all seem to be driving really fast, over the limits most likely.... howcome you don't talk about the fact that this affects each scenario, a lot.... driving safe must entail keeping to the speedlimits or doesn't that matter?
The guy at 24:38 was pissed that the biker took over their lane from a lane filter, common sense tells you the guy took his lane back from the biker, that's it.
that white truck who was turning while the biker was talking about the microphone looks like he had his mirror folded in so he couldn't see out of it. maybe I'm wrong on that, I don't really know how truck mirrors are, but that one with the woman who got bounced off the back of the bike, hopefully she's ok. When riding backpack I either hold onto the sissy bars (apparently that's what people call them) or I'd interlock my fingers around the rider's chest, so I have even tighter hold to not fall off, but I've only been backpacking 3 times, got my own bike now so don't need to worry about that. but I would've slowed down a little especially after that first bump, without a backpacker it would be fine though.
I’m sorry but if ur in a 4 wheel vehicle and purposely use said vehicle to swerve into someone to block them that ISSSSS attempted murder and SHOULD 100% be treated as such by law
I'm new to riding and what I've seen a lot of in this was the rider going just a little bit too fast. The guy that's got a mic, Wahoo was definitely going to fast for the area.
Why do you not teach your viewers to ride with their 'High-Beam' lights ON both daytime and nighttime? I use 'High-Beam' all the time! I know that it has saved me many times, as when I pull up to a stoplight and the car driver makes a comment about my headlights. I never want to be in a crash and the driver tells to officer, "Officer, I never saw him !" With the new trucks that have stacked LED dual headlights coming at you, people driving compact cars are almost blinded. I want the same visibility when I ride my motorcycle.
that first video with the group ride, Ive seen the full video, I think the guy lost control of the bike. he seemed like he was a newer rider and swear up and down he didnt know how to do a wheelie. So either he is lying or lost control
I rode a bit with my daughter when she was younger when I got my Bonneville in 18' (and her mother back in the early 90's), but am with you. I hate having a passenger. So much so that I took the rear pegs off my Tiger 1200. Bikes tall enough without putting someone up on the pinion seat.... though I did make an exception a few weeks ago when she was getting her mc safety course cert (now 22) and took her for a ride on my Tiger. Huge difference in how I have to ride and react. They are off again, and I also told he, now that you have your M1, you should never be a passenger again. Always be the one in control. I'm pushing 60 and single going on 8 years, if I ever end up with a significant other, again she will need to ride her own bike and not expect to be on the back of mine (keeping my T120, partially for that, just in case).
You get a girl to trust you enough to ride on a bike with you, and you drop her like that? I'd question my manhood after that for years to come. I'd feel like damaged goods after that. How could I tell someone I can protect them ever again when I showed such little regard for their safety for such little gain.
If by the "proper hand bars" you mean the ones that come stock on bikes and are usually behind the rear seat or right between the seats, you have basically zero forward and back support with those. So any hard braking or acceleration and you won't be able to hold on.

My friend, unless the jacket and pants are slide rated, they'll evaporate the moment then touch the ground. Thickness doesn't mean anything.
@aidencoder 👏. Ever gone done in denim at 35mph. Does pretty good really. Slide resistant clothing is definitely better. My wool coat did a 45mph slide on rough pavement and didn't even get a hole in it.
@@PleadTheFifth_Racing you do you friend. Just saying, I value mine and my partners skin more than "meh, seems thick enough"
@@aidencoder Dude, I wear a Tech Air 5 and a full custom race suit from One X USA when I'm on one of my sport bikes tearing it up. My comment was that if you're going to ride at least cover up exposed skin and wear decent foot wear.
If you feel the need to be an ATGATT keyboard warrior so be it.
@18:00 the rider locked up the brakes because the speedo is reading 0.
12:00 did you stop to check on the car driver? You going well above the speed limit coming out of nowhere probably put them in a code brown
There might not be oil in position 2 but 1/3 has more grip because they have been rubber imbedded. I stay in 1/3.
I got a really cool belt that has handles. I use it when I have a passenger on my bike. It works great. I never ride anyone without full gear and the belt.
best part of every Video is Getting that thumbnail !! 😂😂
3:00 happened to me a half hour earlier, I saw it coming and it still blew my mind, they rolled through a stop and then stopped halfway into their turn.
15:58 This is what "contemplating their life choices" looks like. Get well Dan!
There's no oil on the road in places that get rain.
Now add the distraction of phones.
lol you can definitely tell you don't feel the best in this video.
"but, Dan! What about the oil?"
hope you feel better soon bud.
That wasn't "lane splitting". It was a two way road divided by a double yellow. NOT legal in any state.
The trucker was still a jerk.
The Guy near the end in the rain where the bus nearly collects him then the other guy pulls along side.
Thats the Crown Island and ring road in Nottinghamshire UK, terrible road and roundabout
8:21 Why do people ride with no protection ffs!
I was guilty of pulling off the gas nozzle right out once upon a time.
that white truck who was turning while the biker was talking about the microphone looks like he had his mirror folded in so he couldn't see out of it. maybe I'm wrong on that, I don't really know how truck mirrors are, but that one with the woman who got bounced off the back of the bike, hopefully she's ok.
Every time I come to this channel I just get mad at the motorcyclists 🤣 some people should maybe learn to ride a bicycle first
I'm new to riding and what I've seen a lot of in this was the rider going just a little bit too fast. The guy that's got a mic, Wahoo was definitely going to fast for the area.
Rule number 1. Hold on
Why do you not teach your viewers to ride with their 'High-Beam' lights ON both daytime and nighttime? I use 'High-Beam' all the time! I know that it has saved me many times, as when I pull up to a stoplight and the car driver makes a comment about my headlights. I never want to be in a crash and the driver tells to officer, "Officer, I never saw him !" With the new trucks that have stacked LED dual headlights coming at you, people driving compact cars are almost blinded. I want the same visibility when I ride my motorcycle.
i do the same thing got a small set of gear only date 120 pound women only set up the rear shock once
Go to the race track!
The first guy definitely whiskey throttle
Girl falling off the bike was gnarly. Thank god she had a helmet or they'd be cleaning her 🧠 off the asphalt.
Feel better buddy. Lots of tea and hot showers.
that first video with the group ride, Ive seen the full video, I think the guy lost control of the bike. he seemed like he was a newer rider and swear up and down he didnt know how to do a wheelie. So either he is lying or lost control
Street bikes are not meant for passengers. Designed for one. No passengers for me.

"theres always an idiot that wants to show off" youre preaching to the quire, theres always some dumb young kid doing some stupid😂
27:54 I have seen so many vids of people doing this and 100% of the time they're women... someone remind me why they pay cheaper for insurance again?
Drink some pedialite. If only i knew how to spell that pedialite. Is that correct?
Welp…. I googled it… Fuuuuuck
It always surprises me when I see people holding onto the rider's waist. Perfect example of why you should have and use the proper hand bars
I believe you have to be 60 or over to have those things on your bike. 😜
If by the "proper hand bars" you mean the ones that come stock on bikes and are usually behind the rear seat or right between the seats, you have basically zero forward and back support with those. So any hard braking or acceleration and you won't be able to hold on.
I thought this was a passenger safety video? I was stoked to learn some new stuff but this seems to be void of passenger rider tips/tricks
You're clearly not paying attention 😅😢
24:20 Stop talking about oil over and over again. It’s annoying. Reminds me of those kids that won’t shut it to prove a point.
37 seconds ago is crazy
Calling people cagers is so tucking cringe...
@PinkFahkUnicorn Every idiom you/we use, know and love will be 'cringe' eventually. Even the term cringe.
@@Alvan81 Uuuhm not really. Cringe is word in the english dictionary so it will be used for ever. Cager on the other had...Either way till that day comes ,it will remain cringe

I still don't understand why someone titles a video with some topic and gets to that topic after 8 minutes of some other content. And after a one "safety tip" as promised in the title, goes on to different unrelated scenarios. Please stop :( make the internet a better place. kthxbye
Can tell ur American with all this oil yapping
Can tell you're European by the way you care if he's American
0:50 yes
Did Mr.Beast create thumbnail meta? Kind of seems like a meme at this point 😂
That one was misoginist, maybe you had lost many followers on this one 😢
Don’t think that comment about the woman at the gas station was necessary. Pretty disappointed hearing you say things like that.
Thank you
Yeah, very disappointing...
Butthurt because a typical woman thing to do was done by a woman. Lol
KKKKKKKKKKKKKKKK
You seriously brought up a comment referring to it was a woman who likely would make worse decisions with a gas pump? Would you discriminate between different races in the same way? You need to treat women with more respect and apologize to your female community. A comment like that in this day and age is considered misogynistic. Otherwise I’m not interested in learning from you anymore.
how to pretend riding a motorcycle is the hardest thing in the world for clicks
Sorry bro you talking nonsense. Have you ever rode a bike before.? The only assessment you need to make is check mirrors before slowing down.
I commonly see many removing their mirrors from, their bike entirely.

It surprised me not that men still think like this but that he said it on his platform. @DanDanTheFireman you need to be more mindful.
