      The platform walkway with power-shaft + irrigation trench is the general go to.
      The spacing is just now ~12 tiles apart instead of ~32

      I was wondering if dynamiting down the existing channels would do anything? If the dumps can keep a multi tile deep hole filled, and the irrigation is tied to the amount of water, then you should be able to irrigate a much larger area by making the holes as deep as possible.

      My default is the a 3 deep water trench with two platform -> power -> single platform for all roads. that is usually my second project after getting dynamite. first project being power. My farms are also 7 x 7 blocks because I like folktails (standard beehive coverage). it is a bit of a pain to plan out as you have to use levees and dams to keep from irrigating non-necessary areas during the dry season. This is why I am dreading bad water. I will have to rethink my development plan.

    You could widen the canal. Or create irrigation pools periodically. Also that gives you a place for mangroves.

      Yes, and then plant mangroves in the canal.

    • @aayyyooooo

      I was thinking the same for that top layer! Making additional canals that go into the fields seems like the way to go, because then you're increasing the size of the body of water, and you can plant mangroves. (side note, it sounds like evaporation will be in a similar boat to boot, so increasing size is better than more seperate runs)
      The phrasing 'size of the body of water' is why I advocate for this strategy.
      Dynamiting down a tile throughout the trench may have an important effect as well?

      Deeper doesn't help spread it further, its more about being on the same level as the ground and size of the water area, 3x3 being the best. The only way to keep it all watered in long droughts is height, as water two tiles lower then the land doesn't irrigate the land anymore.

  • @BPkyle777
    @BPkyle777 9 місяців тому +5

    Doubling the width of your current canal will nearly double it's irrigation range, which should cover your top layers just fine. It's the bottom layer that may need a new water canal.
    Testing it a bit myself I've also found that you can still kinda use the water dump strat if you make your dump 2x3 (or 3x3 if you've got the spare water) and it will cover just as much space as the 1x1 use to. Just have a little more evaporation to deal with, but not that much. A full 2x3 will still last just as long without refill, it just costs 30 water to fill it to full instead of 5.

    • @LittleRedLemon04
      @LittleRedLemon04 9 місяців тому +2

      Sounds like a great place to have the farmhouse be central to the crops by placing it on platforms over the 3x3 pool. Add a shower and a small storage and the space lost can be used in a new way. I have not tested this since my time is limited this week to try this theory out.

  • @wofulmickymomo

    Is the irrigation to do with width, depth or both? Could you dynamite the trenches? Place trenches under paths? Place water under the farmhouses, tanks and storage’s?

    Just widening the current canal by one would be enough to almost put you back where you were. Increasing to 3 width would be the largest area, but the jump from 2 to 3 is quite minor for irrigation radius, so you might want two canals, depending on preference. Those 1 tile water dumps should ideally be replaced with 3x3 ones, and they'll do just fine. It's a bit of land lost, but larger bodies of water are all that you need. You can even put the water dump on a platform over the pool to neaten it up. The update is a bit of a shock, but it's not so bad once you know how it works.

    31:46 I think the best solution would be demo each building (farms, foresters, signal repeaters, storage buildings-- not any of the platforms)), triple dynamite each square that exposes, install triple platforms in the holes, then do the same with the paths to expand your aqueduct. It may take irrigation from the top, running it through channels with dams and lining the bottom row with a gutter system to recirculate the good water back up.

  • @jackcahillmusic
    @jackcahillmusic 9 місяців тому +1

    The irrigation channel is actually irrigating 6 tiles on each side, not 5. You didn't count the tile that had a path on it, so you're actually good if you just move it to the middle of that section. You'll need at least one more further down, obviously.

    Idea 1:
    Top terrace: 1 canal parallel to the og canal and in the middle of the dry crops.
    bottom terrace: 1 canal in the back, right below the second terrace from below.
    Idea 2:
    Turn the second terrace from above into a pond.
    You'll need mechanical water pumps.

  • @PauxloE

    Hmm, interesting change. My suggestion about the irrigation was just to make the evaporation depending on how much land is being irrigated (so these small water dump holes need refilling a lot more often than a lake with nothing around it), but this change does the dependency in the other direction.
    Is the pollution reach following the same principles?

    Use the place below the farmhouses and the paths for water. Suddenly you have 3*3 body of water for irrigation which should give you a 15 tile irrigation instead of 5.

  • @Veklim
    @Veklim 9 місяців тому +1

    Well, firstly you miscounted, it's irrigating 6 tiles, not 5, you forgot about the tile the path is on! Secondly, if you dynamite out all the paths in the top section and replace with platforms then you'll probably be in pretty good standing on the top tier and maybe the step below (since the main channel will be 2 wide and irrigate further). You'll have to place a couple of extra water dumps along the channel to keep it topped up mind you! Thirdly, another irrigation channel one out from the back wall of the lowermost tier will probably sort the rest out fine, you can move the path to there and plant up where the current one is fairly easily.
    As for the pines, just dynamite out every tile with a path or structure on it (except the one which leads in to the river below of course!) and replace with platforms as per above, might well be enough to cover all the trees. One dump should still suffice.
    Honestly, I'm gonna abandon my own games in 5th and start again I think, especially the canal system I set up for my IT build. It's tuned to within an inch of it's life and I don't fancy ripping EVERYTHING up to fix it, time to start over methinks!

    Something I've been pondering, but I don't have the game to test. Is there a way to create a flow of buildings where there is no storage, but haulers move the items between the two buildings quick enough that storage is unnecessary? For example, from the farm to the food factory with no intermediate storage.

    • @takumi2023
      @takumi2023 9 місяців тому +2

      Yes, but generally, you want some buffers. Each building has a production time. You just have to figure out how much each building produces and how many items the building is consuming. But it generally doesn't lead to asethetically good looking design. You also have to account for bots breaking down and needing recharging.
      The reason we have so much food storage is in times of drought or event like the update that ruins production, we want a safety margin.

Could you create a tutorial video titled "How I Plan My Beaver Colony" or something similar? 😅 Secondly, I was wondering if you could make a video or a series explaining how this game works. you already have a great set up for good irrigation demo the farms dinamite area under farm use platforms on the new pond and build farms on platforms on the pond.
    the farm covers the pond and the platforms

    You should just make the existing canal 1 or 2 tiles deeper and 1 blocker wider in each direction

    When you counted the five tiles at the end you didn’t count the path, its irrigation is six tiles not five

    Dear Skye,
    Make your canal atleast 3 wide to get full Irrigation range back.
    Also [Missing note added on 2023-12-05] Soil now absorbs water much faster from small water bodies.
    I've been testing the absorbion rates on a test map. and Its Horrible.
    Even a large lake is evaporating quicker then 22 days. 1x1 tiles dry up in 2.5 days.

      WOOF. 2.5 days?? Hard mode has truly been engaged.
      Seeing Skye adjust to this will be interesting!

      @@aayyyooooo Shape, Width, length. all have a factor in how fast it absorbs water.
      A 3x3 = 10 days.
      3x 20 Canal straight line is 17 days.
      If it has lots of corners/curver a 3x20 can go to 9 days. (Wich rivers usally are)

    you could make the irrigation line two tiles wide and as deep as it can go. That could help with the issue. You could also use 3x3 ponds that are connected to the irrigation line.

    if irrigation is linked to the size of the body of water than could you just blow the irrigation canal down to the bottom of the map so there is more water
    or is it base of surface area and not volume if so then im the dumb

    • @hanzzel6086
      @hanzzel6086 9 місяців тому

      Apparently it is based on width only (with 3 wide bringing you back to pre-update irrigation).

    The irrigation change is a challenge, but I think it makes more sense.

      Yes and no, it feels a tad reactionary after the unintended water dump thing, especially since they just removed water towers because they were redundant, and now suddenly they look like a really solid option and they're still gone. They had to redesign a bunch of stuff in their preset maps to make them work again after this so maybe it went too far the other way, still on the fence about it (and slightly sour due to 2 runs ending because of the change). A single tile dump is pretty much a straight up exploit but long irrigation canals for large planting should still work alright, certainly better than they do with the implementation of this current change. With the way the game focuses on real estate use, the fact that you now need 2-3 tile wide canals everywhere to irrigate effectively makes tile premiums go even further up. At least I'll have plenty of platform space for buildings and storage now, since I'll not be planting on such wide tracts all over the place.
      I can see lido/swimming pool, aquatic crop and mangrove use going up a lot with this change though, so it's not all bad. Already redesigning some tried and true builds in my head based on the change, guess I'll need to play about for a couple of weeks before I decide if I like this or not.

    With the new changes it has to be at least 3x3 wide and on the same level for the biggest range of green. Anyone with 1x1 setups now have to restructure :)

    Well, now that irrigation is area based, our crop area also gets smaller, we need a proper irrigation system for the game.

    Is more depth more longer range right? Or more wide more range? Is just destroying my irrigation which is 12x12 🫠 with 1 tile depth and wide water on around it (with power line on it), but it can be fixed by moving the building to the center but... Is seems beter change to 10x10 then.
