- This month my Patrons are enjoying a 40-minute lesson teaching the ins and outs of this emotive solo transcribed from a live concert in 1967. Please treat yourself to something meaningful and come join us at / andrewlardnerguitar
No gimmicks, silly hats, or fancy outfits. Just tasteful deep dives into classic finger-style repertoire.
This tune inspires me to grab some fingerpicks and get to work. How can any one listen to this and not be blown away? Insane composition.
Great work Andy. We are in your debt for transcribing this.
Thanks Calvin.
My reaction when seeing this thumbnail:
"Oh, fuck yes."
Haha I wish I could borrow some of that energy.
Absolutely beautiful! You are the master of replicating the style and nuances of every song/guitarist that you cover! If John Fahey was here today, I’m pretty sure he would be honoured to have a player like you do justice to his songs 👍🎸😀
Thank you. I wish I could have met Fahey, though I fear he would have had little interest in hearing someone else play his masterpieces.
@@andrewlardner yes, I wish I could have met Fahey as well! After listening to his music, I went down a finger picking rabbit hole That helped me develop my own style of music! I owe a lot to Fahey, because of his influence on my playing! Take care and keep on making great music! 👍
what a beautiful guitar, and wonderful playing!
Nothing is better than getting a notification of a new Andrew Lardner performance.
I would argue getting a new guitar is probably better ; ) but thank you for saying
@@andrewlardner Andrew If I had that Euphonon I don't think I'd ever leave the house
Yasss queen! Another Fahey tune. Sublime.
Beautiful! Happy Birthday MR Lardner
Thank you no 1 fan
Great performance! I like the wristwatch high on the forearm tribute😊
Bravo nicely done
So happy to come across this today. A beautiful 5 minute meditation. Thanks for your playing, as always, Andrew!
Thank you Josh.
I love your playing.
I love your guitars.
I love John Fahey.
Here in Italy there are few people who knows american primitive guitar.
Thanks for your gifts.
Daniele.
Haha Daniele. Well I have a friend in Italy who loves primitive!
You transcribed this song? Impressive. And impressive playing
Yes I transcribe everything I do here, something new every month.
@@andrewlardner I wouldn't even know where to begin. Did you take lessons or did you just develop the ability naturally?
@@joalco3 I started doing it about 25 years ago trying to transcribe Jimi Hendrix solos from VHS. Developed over time.
I love it so much
So Goood!! Awesome playing!!
Thank you Andrew! Beautiful as always! ❤
Thanks for performing this one, that 1967 show is a doozy for sure.
Thanks so much for uploading it. I listen to it weekly.
Such a good one, and real nice ending too
Beautiful cover and playing Andrew.

You must be one of my most faithful viewers Bernard. Always a pleasure to see your name pop up on the comments. Thank you.

You’re always welcome Andrew.

Which mikes do you use.

Superb! One of Fahey's most classic pieces.
Thank you Malcolm. Other than Requia, Oil Slick, Fare Forward Voyagers, and the Fonotone set, do you know of any other places where this can be heard?
@@andrewlardner none that I know of as the complete piece. The melody of the theme that starts around 2:00 can be found in the Fonotone collection. It's an old cowboy song, usually known as 'O bury me not on the lone prairie'. The part near to the end that's reminiscent of 'Requiem of John Hurt' turns up on a bootleg tape that was possibly part of a demo for Vanguard.
Happy recent birthday Andrew!
Yeah, that's just awesome. A fitting birthday tribute.
Thank you James.
Ooooh love it. And the new 6 string on display!
Excellent performance Andrew!!
Thank you!
Legendary performance of an iconic piece, Andrew
Thank you
Great performance, Andy. Short month, fighting illness and you still got this done. I had the pleasure of seeing Fahey about seven times from the mid 70's to the late 80's. Last month i went up to Salem, Oregon and found Fahey's grave. I sprinkled some of my friend Richard Crandell's ashes around the grave. Richard was a great guitarist and huge Fahey fan. Check him out on UA-cam to hear some of his music, on the guitar, the piano and the 'mbira
Thanks Billy. Sorry to hear about your friend. I’ll go check him out right now.
Richard's music was a big part of my mid-late 00s phase when labels like Tompkins were reissuing his record and Numero Group included a cut of his on that incredible Wayfaring Strangers guitar comp. May he rest in peace.
I only listened to a few things but found them all enjoyable. A shame I’m just learning of his artistry now. I really liked the video I saw of him playing and talking about the mbira. Ive always wanted to get one of those for my classroom and never thought of amplifying one with a pickup.
i’ve just given his album “In the Flower of Our Youth” a listen and found it to be nothing short of a masterpiece. thank you for introducing me to another wonderful artist
I just realized The Great Santa Barbara Oil Slick is a mixture of this piece and Voice of the Turtle
And you better believe "Voice of the Turtle" will show up here some day in the future too!
Damn good
Thanks Nash hope you’re doing well.
Thanks for choosing this one! Nice tone with the finger-tone picks. I can’t get a good balance with those, either too much metal or too much finger. Are you picking with just the metal bit?
Thank you Jack. I’m not consciously trying to use them in a particular way. What I like is the loop allows you to still feel the strings with your flesh. I try to have right hand attack very minimal and controlled, but would guess it’s a combination of both, leaning toward slightly more metal.
@@andrewlardner That makes sense, and when I get the attack just right they sound great. My standbys are a pair of old Nationals from the 40s that are not easily replaced, the new ones are just ok. Also been working in some brass dunlops in .0225 gauge - on a rec from liner notes to a Mike Seeger record, you can almost strum those both directions like Maybelle Carter
@@andrewlardnerare your nails short on ur picking hand while you wear metal picks or are they cut down? I always grow mine out but want to start getting into metal fingerprints
@@renehernandez4797 I could go either way because theyd never be long enough to interfere with the picks. I think if you kept your nails really long they could potentially interfere with how the pick works.
Wonderful! What is the guitar Andrew?
Thank you. It’s a Euphonon
Nice, I didn't know this one, but it sounds undeniably like Fahey. I'm assuming it is some Open D Tuning?
DADGAD, or d modal as Fahey referred to it.
Amazing work,as always .
Perfect for my sad mood today because of a terrible accident that happened here close to where i live.
@@greekflatpicker sorry to hear Yiannis. I just saw on the news.
Very nice, looking forward to trying it. Even got the appropriate watch slid up on the forearm...
@@1ANeat Ha I initially did it as a joke but it's turned out to be really functional to always have the time in view while playing.
