  • After a 2 week engagement at Harrah's Club in the winter wonderland that was Lake Tahoe for Christmas 1965, we hopped on a plane and rang in the new year on the Ed Sullivan show on Jan 2, 1966.
The family performed "When The Saints Go Marchin' In" which was our finale at every live performance for the first 2 years we took our show on the road. We also sang it in the benefits we performed in 1963, 1964 and our 'pilot' special in 1964. Audiences loved this song and would clap and sing along. Seems they just "loved to be in that number..." (these are the jokes, folks!)
We tried admirably to get middle America to clap along with us on "2 and 4" but them white folks are hard pressed to give up their "1 and 3". Seriously... growing up with jazz singers I never knew people ever clapped on 1 and 3 til we hit the road! Yes. At 7 years old.

On January 2, 1966 I was home inside watching TV that snowy night on my birthday. I'm sure this program was on along with a few other things my family would watch and Sullivan was a weekly event and The King Family was an American staple for TV. What a great performance clip this is with a lively fun rendition of When The Saints Go Marching In. Thanks for posting this rich look back in time which brings back memories of so much more. Please keep posting these wonderful videos.

Hey Cam! Dunno if you'll see this, but I hope you do sample lines from when you did Juji Kabane from Gungrave: Overdose sometime. Live long and happy my man, take care over there!

King Family trivia question: I read that Marilyn sang as one of the nuns in the Sound of Music soundtrack. Was she a ghost singer for one of the actresses or was she part of the nun's chorus as a background singer?
