turn old jeans into a quilt with polar fleece backing

  • This is a start to finish video. As I worked on the quilt, I was working out the details of how to finish it. I had no pattern. It took me less than a day to make this. Here are the details of what worked for me.
    1. The polar fleece measures 63 inches x 2.5 yards. Measure yours to make it work for you.
    2. Because I has a ruler 6.5 inches wide and it worked perfectly with the 2.5 yards (90 inches), I went with that measurement.
    3. Allowing for 1/4 inch seams, the finished size of the 6.5 wide block would be 6".
    4. 90 inches tall ÷ 6 inches = 15 rows
    5. The length of each block varies. I sewed them together to make 63".
    6. 15 rows that are 63" across the quilt means a total of 79 feet of strips.
    7. Each pair of jeans gave me approximately 8 to 9 feet of strips 6.5" wide.
    thanks for watching

    Thanks for the video -- I love your method of sewing the backing so you could just turn it right side out again -- no adding binding! Love it -- might try this myself. :)

    Thank you so much for sharing this video. I lost my daughter two years ago and am trying to make quilts for her boyfriend and her two sons. She had wanted a quilt with a lot of pockets, for her glasses, books, and so forth. So I was making them out of her jeans. She passed before I could start it though. I wanted to do the backing out of her old scrubs. (She had been a nurse) I know what I wanted the top to look like. But I had been struggling with how to do the backing. Your idea with using the jeans on the top and cutting them the same width was just the idea I needed to do the backing for the quilts. Thank you so much.

    Just found your channel today (I've been looking for how-to videos on denim quilting). I like the idea of doing simple stitch-in-the-ditch quilting. Did the two rows of stitching hold the back & front together OK? I have just a regular machine so I'm not sure how I'm gonna get all that bulk in there to do any quilting on it - but I'll sure try!! LOL

    • @michellesfrugallivin
      @michellesfrugallivin  Рік тому +2

      Yes it through both layers. My machine isn't special for making quilts or anything. I have sewed much thicker things than this. You can always do a test piece so you can see how it goes before you make an quilt.

    I wonder if this would be a good substitute for the old feed sack quilts I grew up with? My great grandmother put sheep’s wool in it and it was heavy and comforting and yummy. Wool batting is so expensive.

    • @michellesfrugallivin
      @michellesfrugallivin  3 роки тому

      This does make a heavy quilt. The king size one I made with flannel and batting probably weighs 6 pounds. I like the heaviness of it. Adding batting to this one would have worked and made it puffy and I would have quilted it more. I haven't ever seen a feed sack quilt. But I could see where people would have used them in quilts.

      @@michellesfrugallivin during the Great Depression people were using feed sacks for clothing. They were a little rough though. My Mom remembers wearing under pants that said Mom’s best on it. That was a flour company :). Animal feed companies saw the need for cheap cloth and started printing designs on their animal feed cloth bags. Women went nuts and insisted their husband buy the printed animal feed which was slightly more expensive but could now serve a double duty of becoming a dress or quilt pieces. Of course all the companies switched over to printed cloth to make a little more profit on their feed. The companies also started applying paper labels with adhesive so there was more yardage available for the ladies. I love the history of feed sack quilts. My family had a farm and not a lot of money so there were many quilts made with the sacks.

      I made a king size out of jeans with a flannel back. It fit in the washer I used to have which was the largest made with the center agitator. The washer I have now is a top load without an agitator so it definitely fits in there and would fit in a front loader.

  • @jolenepatton7935
    @jolenepatton7935 3 роки тому

    I am doing a jeans quilt right now...I'm kinda fussy, and this is my first quilt. I am concerned about the raw edges fraying on the inside of that quilt.. do you find that to be a problem? Did you iron your seams flat before putting the back on? I like the way you did the outside edges. I was thinking of doing a jeans binding, but was worried about the thickness. I'm using my hubby s old 501 work jeans. And it's a thick denim. I also like the idea of not having to use batting, as I think it'll be thick enough as it is. I might use a heavy cotton on the back, as I think we are going to use it for picnics, instead of the fleece or flannel. Good video!

    • @michellesfrugallivin
      @michellesfrugallivin  3 роки тому +2

      I didn't iron it. I just let the seams lay which ever way they wanted. I made a Levi's 501king size quilt from my man's work pants many years ago. I used batting and put flannel on the back. I made a binding with the denim as well but it was just 1 layer not the traditional 2-layer binding. It was really thick at the seams. And I hand quilted it but very little because it was so thick. I have washed that quilt many times and it hasn't shown me any problems with fraying or coming apart. And even with the little amount of quilting it is really the same as when I made it. Good luck with your quilt.
