To be clear, this company has been renamed a few times, currently called Paramount Global. But that would have been a confusing/misleading title for the video, so I just stuck with Viacom to keep it simple.
Hello. Good evening. My name is Brian López. Uh, thanks for the video. Paramount Global makes such good MTV content from all around the world. And it makes a lot of good children's content. Examples of children's content include Hey Arnold!, SpongeBob SquarePants, and many more.
You should tack on a disclaimer at the start of the video mentioning that Viacom changed its name to Paramount Global.
I HATE CAPITALISM
Honestly it would have been more accurate to call them Paramount Global from the start and then do a few lines of how “they were known as” in the first few lines. It just makes the video seem out of date or inaccurate. It’s a strange creative choice.

They absolutely destroyed Nickelodeon and MTV.
And Comedy Central. There’s a reason comedy specials are now on Netflix and Comedy Central is Office reruns
BET too
and maybe even CBS if we are going so far
I would argue that at first they saved Nickelodeon considering that Warner Bros didn't really did much with Nickelodeon when they owned it. Just tried to be an cable version of PBS. Since then yes Viacom (now called Paramount Global) has done more harm then good with Nickelodeon.
@@stephenholloway6893so viacok brought all the foot frtush chinos?
Given how many UA-cam creators get striked by Viacom, I'd assume the hate being amplified by these creators to their audiences also contributes.
I think part of that hate is justified by the striken media not being available on streaming platforms, being lost media (WHICH IS THEIR FAULT, for not backing things up and putting them in a single warehouse that burned down), and not having even a physical copy available, maybe ever. (there never was one)
There should be some kind of rule that disqualifies copyright strikes if they cannot prove the media is not only owned by the striker, but also must be available in that area. No more 3 card monty with the streaming platforms.
The regular fair use harassment is on the border, so I cant weigh in on that.
They opened Pandoras Box.
Ever since UA-cam created the copyright strikes program.
There has been countless of companies and individuals (trolls) that abuse the system.
That adds up.
It cost creators millions of dollars over the years and countless of channels that have been permanently deleted because of false copyright claims.
UA-cam gives 0 support.
From my experience in the last 10+ years, they don't even notify you of said claim.
All of mine (4 to 6) was false claims.
When you dispute the claim, it goes directly to the 🧌 and UA-cam let the 🧌 make the final decision.
It is very justified to be angry because of all that 💩.
@@keith_5584The biggest issue with copyright on UA-cam is that it’s a system that is inherently flawed.
If you receive a copyright strike that doesn’t make sense and appeal it, then the outcome of said appeal is determined by the same people who sent the claim in the first place.
It’d be like if someone falsely accuses you of a crime and decides the outcome of their initial accusation.
If you ask me in addition to the copyright system being revised, and the potential of lost media here (which is probably one of the biggest reasons why bootleg uploads happen here at all), another doctrine I’ve thought of is what I like to call the doctrine of commercial viability.
Part of why some bootleg uploads stay on UA-cam for years and years with no strikes or takedowns is because the media could be so obscure that nobody would pay the rightsholder for access to or owning a copy of it now.
I think there’s a difference between uploading recent clips or episodes of TV shows currently in production, and some show a decade old or older that nobody thinks about except you.
It was always weird to me that the rights to Star Trek were split between CBS and Viacom.
That actually makes sense... Paramount and CBS were jointly owned... CBS broadcasted TV shows.. Paramount did movies... so when CBS split off from Viacom they took the rights to the TV show
And now that they're back together... problem solved.
I'm not that old, but I read that way before Viacom sued UA-cam they used to send C&D letters to Star Trek fansites
I’m surprised you didn’t bring up how Viacom rebranded itself as Paramount Global in 2022.
You mean ViacomCBS rebranding as Paramount?
(Sorry I sound like the 🤓 emoji)
Yeah he just kinda glossed over a lot of the inner business working of Viacom and CBS splitting and merging back together

Yup!@@JRProductions1203
I can tell you why I personally hate Viacom.
I was the logo designer for the SpongeBob Band Geeks Reanimated project. It was my first time designing a logo for such a big project. I can tell you that everyone who submitted a scene worked their asses off on that video. It was an amazing love letter to Stephen Hillenberg who had recently passed away at that time.
When the video was posted, everyone was shocked about the views it was getting. If I recall correctly, it got about 2 million views in about 2 weeks. It was amazing to see all of the love and passion everyone put in get recognized.
Then freaking Viacom saw the video and took it down. Now, I'm not going to sit here and claim that they had no legal right to do that. They absolutely did. However, Opra (the person behind the project) made it clear that no one was profiting from the project. I even think monetization was turned off. The reason why I hold a grudge is that Viacom could've claimed it, and just earn ad revenue from the video by keeping it up. But no. They took it down in all countries except Canada for some reason. Everyone behind the project was really upset about it.
So yeah, thanks Viacom.
Viacom sucks! Sorry you got violated by them.
They can’t block videos in North Korea or Iran.
You stole IP, you are lucky you didnt get sued.
@@BDBD16 It is a bit of a gray area in terms of fair use, and Viacom is definitely petty, but I don't think that they are THAT petty. Like I said, legally Viacom had every right to take it down. But we were especially annoyed with it because 24/7 unofficial Spongebob streams were abundant on UA-cam at the time, and yet Viacom took our project down instead of dealing with the actual copyright infringement that was pretty much in broad daylight. It just felt really unfair at the time.
Spongebob reanimated is not fair use, it's straight up a bootleg of a TV show, of course it got taken down!?!?
Matt Stone and Trey Parker were not allowed to outright call Tom Cruise gay for the episode Trapped in the Closet because Viacom wouldn't allow it due to Tom Cruise threatening to stop promoting Mission Impossible III.
Cruise is notorious for threatening to sue for defamation. And he has the money to follow it through.
Hey, is that fudge-packer Tom Cruise?
As a Neopets user since 99' I can say Viacom dipping their fingers in the virtual pet market was dumbest move since it hurt Neopets badly to a point where businesses that had it after kept flopping the website until it fixed itself.
Neopets had one issue that was bigger than the companies who owned it:
The fact that in the mid 2010’s, Flash as a gaming paradigm really declined.
Not that Viacom did them any favors, but it feels like people don’t play browser games as much as the 2000’s or early 2010’s.
@@fortynights1513 it was an issue and Neopets was too busy being ping-ponged across the marketable table to put the time and money into converting their games.
At least we have Ruffle to continue enjoying the games.

And after Sumner Redstone died, his daughter Shari took over the company, and promptly remerged Paramount and CBS, which Sumner refused to do because he said it was a bad idea. The company's been in a death spiral ever since and she is going against the board and refusing to sell the company because it won't enrich her personally enough.
And after Sumner Redstone died, his daughter Shari took over the company, and promptly remerged Paramount and CBS, which Sumner refused to do because he said it was a bad idea.
Lee Moonves- who was at the time in charge of CBS Corporation also opposed that re-merger for the same reason. & he got metooed out of his job for it. I too had a feeling that the re-merger was a bad idea becuase the " new" Vaicom wasn't doing as well as CBS Corporation was doing at the time.

"Oh look. Viacom is taking down content that's none of their business. As a UA-camr this is all too common for me."

Viacom didn't fully own Spelling until 1999. Today, Spelling's theatrical and DTV libraries are held by the Melange Pictures unit of Paramount Pictures, while the TV library is held by the Spelling Television unit of CBS Studios. @@cdvideodump It didn't help that the NFL chose not to replace Fox with the CW over Fox News as punishment for the latter's role in what happened on January 6, 2021. Had that happened, Nexstar wouldn't have entered the picture. But the NFL is too scared of its conservative fans. But they will call out things said by their conservative players like they did with Harrison Butker, which makes the NFL hypocrites. Perhaps if Biden offered a Presidential Medal of Freedom to Roger Goodell in exchange for dropping Fox, it could have happened. Yes I know this would be a crime, but Biden would probably be pardoned by the next Democrat in the Oval Office.

I worked at Nickelodeon Animation Studio from 2007 - 2015 and this analysis of Viacom is very accurate if not with a gentle touch. Viacom is responsible for the decline of Nickelodeon, MTV and other networks. There are great people that work in those studios, but the company itself is not the culture for everyone. Once Viacom started taking over Nickelodeon Animation operations and creative workflows, what used to be a creative and fun place to work quickly became full of executives with big ideas. Viacom never wanted to acknowledge that Netflix and UA-cam were serious competitors - because their leadership is literally old and not in touch with tech trends. Netflix is walking circles around Nickelodeon now. All of the major studios have struggled with adjusting to online streaming, but Viacom denied it for many years, even when I left the company in 2015.
Viacom went FULL Corporate when Sumner threw his OWN Son Frank under the bus in June of 1997 and replaced him with Herb Shelbert. Shelbert also fired Geraldine, and Vanessa.
All large corporations are hated. All good companies die to a corporation that buys them out. They lose their original vision, creativity, and soul. Large corporations don't innovate, they wait till someone else does and they swoop in with their fat wallets and buy out the idea. Then its a downward spiral to "reduce costs, get revenue up at all costs" mission and its disgusting.
Eric Cartman is pretty much the ceo of Viacom lol!

Well before merging with Paramount, Viacom had also drawn the ire of many who saw the company's V of Doom logo when a new jingle for it debuted in 1978, two years after the logo debuted originally using the previous logo's jingle. Many blame the V of Doom for bad dreams they have had over the years.
Paramount is itself guilty of scaring TV viewers with their TV logos that they used between 1969-87.
So yeah, Viacom and Paramount have been messing with people for decades, well before their copyright battles with UA-cam.
I remember that little animation of Viacom on my 90s TV shows
The wardrobe malfunction was 20 years ago?!? Oaf that hurts
I never realized how huge Viacom got over the past 30 years. I'm old enough to have grown up watching all their old shows in syndication, each one ending with the screeching "V of Doom" production logo. (Or the 70's xylo-synth mindbender they used before that!) I thought they were just some rinkydink outfit with a cheesy logo. Then it would control the businesses of a broadcast network and a movie studio, and much more. Insert V of Doom music at highest volume here!
People overlook the THREE Key Fellows at MTV Networks Inc from 1984 to 1994: Frank Redstone aka Summer Jr, Fred Seibert and Alan Goodman. These MEN completely put Nickelodeon and MTV Networks On the MAP and ran them with absolute Excellence. Frank Redstone is responsible for things like YO MTV Raps, Nick Jr, Liquid TV, Nicktoons, Game Shows you name it. Shari's older Brother built Both Nickelodeon and MTV. Keep in mind, MTV and Nickelodeon were LOSS Leaders and NOT Turning A profit before '84. MTV didn't even turn a profit until '84-85 and Nickelodeon had Lost money on a consistent basis since 1979.
1:19 - "They control a significant part of the entertainment industry." True, and while people know this, they also conveniently forget it when you try to tell them that the people who hold the microphone are the one controlling the narrative, pushing the agenda, telling people what's popular, what to think, whose side to be on, who they're supposed to be against this week, etc. It's as if people are smart enough to know someone's controlling things, but not smart enough to realize their role in following, blindly.
BINGO! Nice to see not everyone is sleeping behind the wheel.

One more reason I’d say is Dan Schneider, he was the mastermind of Nickelodeon sitcoms of the late 2000s/early 2010s. Although the shows were a success he’s seen as being a sex offender. There was also the underage feet issue attached to him as well as the conspiracy that he got Jamie Lynn Spears pregnant while she was a minor (her pregnancy cancelled Zoey101).
Dan Schneider, not Hentschel.
@@marknemeth267I realized that now just got them mixed up
The entertainment industry is full of very evil people!
I'm old enough to remember the "V of doom" logo that they used.
The original Viacom used to scare the heck outta me back in the 80s & 90s with their infamous "V of Doom" closing logo. At least you closed the video with using the "V of Steel" logo than the "V of Doom" one!
That said, the "new" Vaicom (as it's a different company from the original Vaicom) upset a lot of YTers for suing the site- which long term ending up hurting the company. Also re-merging the new Viacom with CBS Corp didn't help either (CBS was in better shape than Viacom at the time of the re-merger.)
Today, the company is now called "Paramount Global" & it's now looking for a buyer!
The V of Steel was succeeded by the Wigga Wigga, which had a jingle that sounded like a rock song and Don LaFontaine's voice saying the company name. This was the first Viacom logo I remember seeing.
And yet the FCC let Disney become a monopoly, it's only a matter of time before Disney buys Viacom/paramount
Warner Bros wants a word with you.
Comcast is BIGGER! 😂
Viacom has taken the fun out of MTV! That network no longer has a SINGLE music video!
Just ask Fall Out Boy who said "UA-cam killed MTV" when they redid Billy Joel's hit song "We Didn't Start the Fire"!
Worth noting that Viacom bought Blockbuster in 1994 to get a sizable cash influx to outbid QVC for Paramount. The purchase of Paramount also gave Viacom a chain of 5 theme parks that got a lot of IP added to the park.
You do one on Warner Bros. Discovery.

@@mbdg6810 It's ALL ABOUT NICKELODEON and its management and how they all turned a blind eye to child abuse. This should 100% be part of a video on why a company is hated. In fact THE MAIN REASON. Enabling the worst parts of humanity for profit...
If you go over the actions of every corporation you're likely to find a ton of scummy things.
The EA of television 😔
Discovery is also catching up now that they own WB.
I love Neopets and still play! They're having a resurgence and it makes me happy.
I hope you have a nice day!
And I'm on the side of people who are fans of when MTV was a music channel. I want MTV to go back to being music videos like they do.
For those who grew up with the 1987 Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles series, we saw there name and heard there logo after evrey aired episode -
A white/purple background with chrome letters and a darker voice; VIACOM!
And with age realized they where a big player with owning MTV, Nickelodeon, Comedy Central and even old classic Paramount Studios etc-etc.
Viacom, Needs to be Busted up, its much too large,,,,,
Yep. Then again, Disney and Microsoft are WORSE when it comes to business monopolies.
Viacom TV channels have been removed from some cable systems & some have also removed CBS.
Yo someone gimme a link to that Viacom animation near the beginning
To be completely honest you pulled the curtain of my childhood back and showed me who made all the sausage. I’m not sure how to feel about Viacom, they’ve had there tentacles in everything I loved or remember as a child.
Now it’s called Paramount Global
The lawsuit against UA-cam made most things unwatchable. It’s why I hate them.
Cracks me up how you uploaded this on Garfield's 46th birthday considering the fact that Viacom acquired the rights to Garfield in 2019
Surprised you didn't mention that the CBS they acquired in 1999 was also Westinghouse Electric Corporation, so Viacom was even building friggin nuclear reactors.
Also the whole UPN scandal and the channel going out of business in 2006
"Let me know in the comments how you feel about Viacom. Do you like them?"
Why would anybody like the shady faceless corporation? What kind of a question is that!? XD
Apathy and indifference is the best they could hope for.
Reason 9: All the folks who were traumatized by the V of Doom logo as children
Request: do “The Decline of FTD Florists…What Happened?”, because I want a lecture on why they filed Chapter 11 in 2019. Your lectures on business failures are great! Keep it up!
Viacom: -Why- they’re hated
Video dropped just in time to jump start me in folding these clothes❤
It should be illegal to add over $900 million in debt as a gift to the shareholders who would then sell their shares. The people who make the debt should have to pay the debt.
I heard that UA-cam gained popularity as a place where that wardrobe-mishap could be shared.
Possibly but it would have had to be censored. Plus UA-cam didn't exist yet when it happened so it would have had to been after the fact.
Its really only three big media companies
Disney
Viacom
Warner.
Who here bets that Viacom is going to copyright strike this video?
I mean, this isn't the first Viacom (now Paramount) video from Company Man. First the MTV one (his second ever video after the decline of Kmart), then the rise and fall of Nickelodeon, now this one on Viacom. Think they'll all be blocked?
@@ckfinke7625I knew I wasn’t crazy, I don’t know how long this video will last but let’s just wait and see.
The only reason I know of Viacom as a company is because of them buying and crudding up Neopets, which I enjoyed playing as a young lad. Glad it got a very brief mention.
Of course, I knew Viacom for their logos coming off of old CBS shows. They in turn owned the MTV Networks, then also owned CBS, and then split in 2006, one becoming CBS (owning the said network as well as Showtime) and the other as Viacom (owning the basic cable channels including Nickelodeon and MTV), only to reunite in 2019 to become ViacomCBS, then renamed Paramount in 2022 (thanks to the brand becoming bigger since Paramount+).
@@ckfinke7625 MTV Networks,Inc as a IPO was dissolved on May 16,1994, MTV Networks as a Label was completely dissolved on August 21,2001.
Sumner Redstone "I have no intention of dying".
2020 was like,"Bet".
Loving the implication that Redstone didn't change his mind regarding retirement but did flip on death.
Viacom is a well-known media company.
INFAMOUS media company is more accurate...
Thanks for including Howard Stern ✌🏻
Don't forget, another reason Nickelodeon is hated now is because of allegations the past few years over the working environment for all the children working on their various shows. Jennette McCurdy talked about it in her book "I'm Glad My Mom Died" and they just had that new documentary "Quiet on Set".
How do you make your video? I want a tutorial. I also want to show some companies that I have researched.
You unlocked a memory when you mentioned Neopets 😂
After Les Moonves’ sexual abuse scandal came to light, I wasn’t the least bit surprised when Julie Chen announced she was leaving the Talk. Of course, she’s still married to him and even took on his last name professionally… 😒
She's a "born again" wacko now too.😏🙄
Remember that time Viacom bought the children's gaming website, Neopets, and then proceeded to plaster the site with inappropriate adult content banner ads? Yeah, they did that and I probably still have the screenshots to prove it.
Hey boss man, any thoughts on doing any video on the usps?
It’s actually called CBS or Paramount Global, I get the Viacom era was the worst time when they started having mismanagements with splitting assets and suing content creators on UA-cam! I don’t hate Redstone, but I hate how he fired Tom Freston who didn’t want to take the big risk of MySpace, and was the better CEO than Moonves. Freston who grew MTV and Nickelodeon to be iconic networks, only to be ruined by his successors at the company!
Surprised no mention of the perception of what they did to Vidcon once they took control of it. Viacom bought vidcon in i think 2018, and the response was NOT positive (everyone still very much remembered Viacom's lawsuit against UA-cam). Luckily the con hasn't really suffered much in my opinion, but there is still a MASSIVE corporate presence there, especially in the expo hall area, that feels really unnatural. It's still a fun convention but the corporatization still left a bad taste in everyone's mouth (seeing the Paramount logo on the Vidcon website still bugs me a lot).
As someone who watched the channel “BET” in the beginning when Ben Johnson owned it, the channel was beautiful to watch. Video Soul, Comic View and other great shows including “Teen Summit” were amazing. Especially “BET News” was amazing. But once the channel was sold, it started creating programs that were “Stereotypical” and offensive towards majority of Black Americans like myself. They created a platform that suggested that we’re all poorly educated people who only listen to rap music monolithic to other cultures that believe in stereotypes. But now we have a online platform which reunite us with programs like Roland Martin and other platforms under one umbrella
"I have no intention of dying."
Least megalomaniacal CEO
Very bold of you to make another video about Viacom due to how much they copyright claim any UA-cam video about them, yourself included as this isn’t the first time you talk about them.
how can u skip over Dan Schneider and the quiet on set documentary
I learned what Viacom was as an 11 year old (2007) because they did 2 unacceptable things. 1 - They made it impossible to access legacy Nickelodeon content, so I couldn't watch Doug, one of my favorite shows ever. I had to learn how to pirate TV shows as a kid. And 2 - They copyright struck a bunch of UA-cam Poopers and threatened the genre.
To give some context for the Neopets point: Neopets got a full revamp in 2007, when Viacom owned them. This controversial change to the game lead to the website and even the pets themselves getting redesigned. The redesign was primarily done to accommodate the new dress up feature added, but some preferred the old art.
In retrospect though you can kind of forgive them for this when you consider they weren't even Neopets' worst owners. That title would definitely go to Netdragon for trying to sell Neopets NFTs rather than implementing features fans want and trying to salvage the game after the death of flash. I still hate what Viacom did with UA-cam and some of their channels though.
I’m not American so once they keep making South Park I’m good
