This phenomenon happens in Boston, especially South Boston, too. Government officials are writing rules these days that these kinds of arrangements can only exist for 48 hours after the snow stops falling. Narrower streets, often one-way, in Boston make this a very controversial topic. Thanks for this video... love how you capture the essence of the issue, and go "on-site" to record your video about this issue.

OH MY GOSH! I KNEW IT! I thought you had just posted a preemptive shot but it was from a video you made! Love it dude. The way I handle dibs is just by shoveling out my car and then leaving my car there. If I leave its open. If I don't have it when I come back that's fine. Because I am not an idiot that thinks they get a parking spot just because they shoveled it. Park and shovel it again if you need to. Dibs is as ridiculous as walking into a public restroom and cleaning off a toilet to use. Putting paper down on the seat or whatever. Then expecting to come back hours later and have that same toilet in the condition you left it in. Nice video buddy.

Wait......so if you shovel your car out you get your own private parking space without having to pay for private parking? I thought you have to shovel your car out so you can get to work or wherever you're going....everyone does...how does that entitle you to your own parking spot just bc you shoveled? Parking in Chicago is already difficult enough as it is and now we have to battle with chairs and junk on the street when it snows. Also...i hear that people will key or mess up peoples cars if they take a dibbed spot, but how do you know that car was the one that moved your dibs? Another car could've moved it before, left, and now another car came and sees a clean spot that isn't dibbed (bc the previous car moved it) but he or she has to suffer the consequence? i live in this shit city, hopefully not much longer, and i've never dibbed a spot before. I shovel because i need to get my car out, but that doesn't entitle me to my own parking spot.

Growing up in Chicago, we always saved our spots. It was always a normal thing. It was rude to think you can just park in a space someone else worked so hard to clear. When I did the same thing in the western burbs when I was an adult, omgosh, people were so upset. They didn't care that you worked so hard to clear a spot... well I guess they kinda did... they just wanted that space for themselves. People are just not as nice as they used to be.

    • @-Stinky_Pinky
      @-Stinky_Pinky 5 років тому +4

I live in Chicago too but I personally have the opposite opinion, although I respect yours. I don't think it's right to have your own private parking spot just bc you shoveled. The "hard work" you put in to clear out your spot is so that you can get to work, or wherever you're going. Everyone has to do that if you want to get your car out, you're not entitled to that spot. Street parking is difficult enough as it in my neighborhood, and I don't feel it's right to dig out a spot right in front of my apartment to get a private parking spot right in front of my building for as long as the snow lasts. Plus, isn't that considered littering? Last time i checked if you chuck unwanted items onto the streets it's considered littering, and litter should be removed. I feel it's actually inconsiderate to dib because if you're leaving, someone else needs the spot. You want to claim that spot even though you're leaving??? What if you're going to be gone for the rest of the night, or a few hrs, you're going to hog that spot when other people need to park? You're not even going to be there! But again, this is just my opinion and obviously a lot of people in the city agree with yours. I've just never dibbed before and I have to shovel my car out just like everyone else, but i don't feel that hard work entitles me to a private spot, it's just what needs to be done to get my car out because I chose to live in Chicago where winter sucks every year.
Sorry I'm drunk and i went on a rant. I didn't realize i typed so much.

    • @-Stinky_Pinky
      @-Stinky_Pinky 3 роки тому +3

@@geeman215 No offense but no one cares if you shoveled because EVERYONE has to shovel whenever it snows. I drive to work every morning. How do you think I get my car out if it snows overnight, you think I own a hover craft? EVERYONE has to shovel snow if you own a car. I just shovel to get my car out and I don't expect to get my spot back. Trust me, I would much rather shovel and claim front row parking for the whole entire day but I don't feel right doing it because it is damn hard finding street parking as it is in my neighborhood, even when it's not snowing. It's nearly impossible to find parking when there are chairs and junk left out on the street. There are too many people and too little parking spots here for people to be claiming when they're not even home. I probably shovel twice as much as you do just BECAUSE I don't dib my spot. I have to shovel when I leave and shovel again when I get home. Also, for the people that get back at the person who stole their spot, how the hell do you know who took it? Just because a car is parked in your spot doesn't mean that's the same person who stole it. Someone else could have stolen your spot earlier and left, and then the poor soul who sees an open spot with no dibs comes in and gets their car keyed?

      @-Stinky_Pinky 3 роки тому +3

@@geeman215 You're right I don't make up the rules, except these aren't the rules. It's tradition that people have created themselves. Look up what the legality of the laws are about street parking. They even mentioned it in the Chicago news asking people to quit doing that. Don't you think we would all love to just have to shovel and get to reserve it as a free private parking spot? You're right about one thing, it's never gonna stop. But tell me, how the hell do you even know who stole your spot? A pizza delivery guy could've tossed away your dib chair and left, and then someone else will come in thinking it's an empty spot because there's no dibs left there anymore. You're just gonna take out your frustration on an innocent random person because your "spot" is gone?
btw I've taken a nice step ladder that someone used for dibs before, because if you leave it out on the street it's littering and free to take. And guess what, I didn't even park in that spot because I was leaving, I just wanted the stepladder. 😂

Snowfall here in Pittsburgh hasn't been too bad this year, just a lot of cold. However on a good snow day, especially up in the Laurel Highlands west of the city where there can be ten inches to a foot of snow at a time, the Pittsburgh Parking chair is mandatory! You spend all that time digging out the spot, you don't want some schmuck taking it from you while you're at work or out at the store grabbing toilet paper, bread and milk! Speaking of which Here in Pittsburgh those are the three items everyone goes out to buy when it snows a lot. How about Chicago?
