I live in Bend, drove by the studio a few times, and actually met one of the developers at my work one time. Cool to see this game finally release, escpecially because the studio is in my town. Kind of a trip.
Damn, those visuals are so crisp, textures are defined and the art direction is flawless. Not a single jagged edge, visuals like this are a delight to behold.
An excellent point. I find John's pseudo reviews far more appreciative of the work that's gone in to them than the major review sites and a lot more honest. They feel like a voice from and to the gamer. Sites like IGN have to hit ridiculous deadlines to complete a game for review. The reviewer is clearly going to look at large scale games negatively as they are playing them not in the way the majority will. Cramming a 60+ hour game into likely a handful of days does not give an authentic review. DF analysis did a much better job in presenting the game than IGN through passion instead of extreme negativity.

Finally a Unreal engine 4 game that looks good. I have spent around 10-12 hours with this game on the ps4 pro on a 4k HDR Sony tv. This a absolute joy to play, I love the slow paced gameplay and the excellent story. The sense of dread is always there. (9/10)
Yes, when I first played I was stunned by the graphics and fun gameplay. The only thing that ruined it for me was the very poor dubbing of the Italian version I played. (I'm from Italy). The dialogues felt very disconnected and deacon was always speaking loudly for some reasons. I switched the audio to English, it was way better.
This is a good game, but the clunky controls and the input lag makes it hard for me to enjoy. If the controls were better and there was no input lag I would have loved it.

@@ManoMonikas This game was 30fps on ps4 and 30fps games always have input lag. Replayed it on the ps5 which is 60fps and it ran smooth without any input lag on the same tv.
I actually can’t get over how incredible the forest floor looks... isn’t it amazing how far games have come. I know I’ll find myself just staring at the world detail a lot throughout this game, very excited.

I can't believe thru managed to pull off native 1080p on standard PS4 on an open world Unreal Engine 4 game with THIS much level of detail. Well done Sony Bend. They should stick with the engine going forward as surely it will benefit them after working with it for years. So then what is up with meh looking Unreal 4 engine games like Tekken 7 or Dragon Quest XI unable to output higher than 900p?
I lived in the Central Oregon area for several years, and this game reminds me so much of that area, mainly the mix of forest and deserts. It's pretty clear where the game was developed from.

I'm a recent sub. Love the in depth analysis of all the best games. Thank you. Was a little surprised you didn't take more time to look at the mud in this game. The motorcycle physics combined with the mud effect makes riding in the rain very satisfying. Anyway, I'm about 8 hrs in and this is pretty much a must play if you like the now standardized open world format. Cheers!

Hey digital foundry I love how u talk about the quality in games. But you don’t talk about sound and innovative games use sound. I would love to know how far sound plays in modern games like god of war and days gone
It's probably because there's rarely any real advancements or innovations in sound. It's also much harder to pinpoint how it works without exactly knowing the systems behind it. The game where they handled sound in a different way that comes to mind is Gears of War 4 because they used a system to map audio to 3D space. Kind of like raytracing, but for audio. IIRC, a lot of data needs to be baked so it takes a huge amount of disk space so not every type of game can take advantage of it. Google Triton and Gears of War for more info.
Uncharted Golden Abyss deserves a remake/port to PS4. Hopefully we get it. Anyway, I'm glad that Days Gone is *finally* here. It's one game that I've been really waiting for on PS4. It's great that this game looks and plays very well on the standard PS4 and Pro Pro. I'm sure that the Day 1 patch should address these issues.
The game was quite enjoyable, but it was almost entirely built upon what was created by naughty dog. It even ran on the same engine as the ps3 games, no? If not, it sure as heck looked like it. Only difference was the character models and performance, which was quite poor. The gimmicks with the vita controls were also incredibly irritating.
First Sony should fix Uncharted Collection which still doesn't have any Pro and HDR support. But that's an opportunity they can monetize on ps5 by including 4k (possibly 8k?) support, HDR support and all the while adding Golden Abyss and Uncharted 4 + Lost Legacy
This was recently added to PS Now, so I figured I'd give it a shot. After playing a few hours, then coming here to watch DF's expert analysis, I never realized how beautiful this game really is. There are times it is flat out stunning, in my opinion.
DF is a blessing and a curse really. I never noticed things like ambient occlusion and dynamic resolution before, but now I cant help but notice things like that now.
The game has numerous framerates issues that numerous reviewers have pointed out, along with alot of pop in areas and voices and facial animations not syncing up especially in the early areas. Sony has been good but this is not what I would call setting the plank high
Everybody acts like power matters and look at the PlayStation this generation it's not the power that always counts. It's How the developers leverage that power and how they put it to good use and man does Sony have some of the best creative gaming studios in the business! Power helps but it's worthless without games to show it PS4 rules. The developers just have at it!

RDR2, one of the best looking games if not the best, runs at native 4K on XB1X!
Sure, anything can look impressive with checkerboard rendering and 30fps. Come back when you have a game that can maintain this fidelity with a playable frame rate.

I heard they just dropped patch 1.04 13gb update in the last hour? Anyone have any info on it? Watched the ACG review, was on the fence, but this may have tipped me
The only information it gives is " - Bug Fixes, - Localization Updates." So basically they've fixed a bunch more bugs that you've seen in review vids or read about. The update isn't a GAME CHANGER, but it will make your experience playing the game more enjoyable. Apparently, most reviews are based off the 1.02 version which had waaay more bugs than the game version that we will play on day one. If you're on the fence and have the extra dough, buy it. Youll support the studio's future games and you'll hopefully enjoy playing the game a whole ton.
Games running great, very minor bugs. Other recent triple A titles have a lot more bugs and issues then this game. I definitely don't regret buying this game.
The zombies and motorcycle upkeep stuff in this game reminds me of Dead Rush. I was looking forward to that game way back when, before it was canceled, so maybe I should try this out.
@@cMARVEL360 3840X2160p is 4k, it's still 4k. Doesn't matter the rendering methods used to reach the final 4k pixel counts. Just like native rendering, it still needs to be rendered, the only difference is it's not native due to the method used to render the same pixel count as native rendering.

Days Gone looks really intriguing. When I revisited Bend Studio's older games for my latest video, I came away feeling like they definitely weren't going to fail. Their eye for detail has always been impeccable.
He's right about the buildings. I came about a building that had "trespassers will be shot" but it was burned out from the inside. Almost like the dwellers were flushed out with fire.

One of my favorite games is Mad Max, Days Gone reminds me of that mixed with The Last of Us and Sons of Anarchy. I think Sony Bend created a beautiful game. I'm buying this to support them. I hoped upcoming patch will fix these technical issues. I can say bend studio did a great job it maybe the best game but still not bad at all. Just look at those graphic details. Thank for all efforts you put into it bend.
Its funny. On ps4 we've been spoiled so this feels like the standard. If xbox players had this then half their heads would explode and the other half wouldnt shut up about it saying its the greatest game ever. I guess starvation is the greatest seasoning.

Amazing game. When I start this last evening I was... amaze how is beautiful this world. How many details Bend Studio put in the environments. Such a wonderful and scary world. And so big step for the team. I want only two things now - to DS was a long game, and await the new games from Bend Studio. I really dont know where to ask anymore, i see all kinds of answers, from "no, i dont see any slowdowns", to "this game is unplayable". I have base PS4, and i want to buy DG on sale, but with so many people putting the game down, mostly because FPS, it puts me down somehow :/ anyhow, how is performance on your (base) PS4? FPS? Does it hinder the experience? Does it crash your system? Is it something like RDR2 FPS drops, which are far apart and short (1or2 seconds), or...? Hmmm...questions, questions... Hey digital foundry I love how u talk about the quality in games. But you don’t talk about sound and innovative games use sound. I would love to know how far sound plays in modern games like god of war and days gone
It's probably because there's rarely any real advancements or innovations in sound. It's also much harder to pinpoint how it works without exactly knowing the systems behind it. The game where they handled sound in a different way that comes to mind is Gears of War 4 because they used a system to map audio to 3D space. Kind of like raytracing, but for audio. IIRC, a lot of data needs to be baked so it takes a huge amount of disk space so not every type of game can take advantage of it.

RDR2 also uses screen-space shadows through out the entire game world and on characters. I believe you guys missed it in the DF analysis.

The game was quite enjoyable, but it was almost entirely built upon what was created by naughty dog. It even ran on the same engine as the ps3 games, no? If not, it sure as heck looked like it. Only difference was the character models and performance, which was quite poor. The gimmicks with the vita controls were also incredibly irritating.
First Sony should fix Uncharted Collection which still doesn't have any Pro and HDR support.
But that's an opportunity they can monetize on ps5 by including 4k (possibly 8k?) support, HDR support and all the while adding Golden Abyss and Uncharted 4 + Lost Legacy
This was recently added to PS Now, so I figured I'd give it a shot. After playing a few hours, then coming here to watch DF's expert analysis, I never realized how beautiful this game really is. There are times it is flat out stunning, in my opinion.
Still play with my Day 1 PlayStation 4 from 2013 on my 55“ 4K Sony. I am a casual gamer. So for me it was always enough 🤷🏻♂️

DF is a blessing and a curse really. I never noticed things like ambient occlusion and dynamic resolution before, but now I cant help but notice things like that now.

It's How the developers leverage that power and how they put it to good use and man does Sony have some of the best creative gaming studios in the business! Playing this in 2023 on PS5 at 60fps and it’s genuinely better looking than a lot of ‘current gen’ PS5 & Series X games.

I heard they just dropped patch 1.04 13gb update in the last hour? Anyone have any info on it? Watched the ACG review, was on the fence, but this may have tipped me
The only information it gives is " - Bug Fixes, - Localization Updates." So basically they've fixed a bunch more bugs that you've seen in review vids or read about. The update isn't a GAME CHANGER, but it will make your experience playing the game more enjoyable. Apparently, most reviews are based off the 1.02 version which had waaay more bugs than the game version that we will play on day one. If you're on the fence and have the extra dough, buy it. Youll support the studio's future games and you'll hopefully enjoy playing the game a whole ton.

Days Gone looks really intriguing. When I revisited Bend Studio's older games for my latest video, I came away feeling like they definitely weren't going to fail. Their eye for detail has always been impeccable.

One of my favorite games is Mad Max, Days Gone reminds me of that mixed with The Last of Us and Sons of Anarchy. I think Sony Bend created a beautiful game. I'm buying this to support them. That ground clutter, foliage, weather movement, dynamic time of day -- it's all nice and complex.
Playstation exclusives are simply stunning.
That's the benefit of being able to focus on a single piece of hardware. Makes optimization much more thorough.
One of the little details I enjoy are the deflated tires, showing off the passage of time.

I'm a PC gamer but my mind is blown with what they can do with hardware that's been obsolete for years. Can you guys imagine what the ps5 is going to be able to produce considering the vast CPU and GPU improvements and a ssd?!

Amazing game. When I start this last evening I was... amaze how is beautiful this world. How many details Bend Studio put in the environments. Such a wonderful and scary world. And so big step for the team. I want only two things now - to DS was a long game, and await the new games from Bend Studio. Thanks to the whole team and each member of the team for this long road, and for these years of the hard work.

I have base PS4, and i want to buy DG on sale, but with so many people putting the game down, mostly because FPS, it puts me down somehow :/ anyhow, how is performance on your (base) PS4? FPS? Does it hinder the experience? Does it crash your system? Is it something like RDR2 FPS drops, which are far apart and short (1or2 seconds), or...? Hmmm...questions, questions...
