    As we approach the dock here I want to get quite close. Now I'm using forward just to stop us from getting back onto the dock itself. As soon as I've lost my forward reverse momentum I stop.
    If you can throw the line to him like that over his arm then it's not going to hit him in the face.
    Oh we'll take it back it's okay. Oh okay okay. So you'll get this as well. There's often you will um either get someone who's going to pass the line back to you or he's just going to hitch it there so that you don't have to deal with it straight away. Now if it was a really windy day or if I was getting blown away right now I would drive my boat against that Stern line or control line.
    So that I had control and was not drifting closer to the dock.

    So once you have reached your desired distance from dock and come to a stop you sit with engine in neutral? In no wind scenarios

      Yep. Once you stop the yacht. If possible to maintain your position in neutral this is best scenario.

    The slightest bit of crosswind and you drift as soon you are stopped. The windward line has to be cleatead on the cleat midship and the guy on the dock has to cleat as well. Then put the engine in forward. But still you will be all over the place 😂.

      Obviously, docking in a cross wind requires more seamanship skills than in a calm. Those skills are gained from understanding your boats and its dynamics along with practice.
      In a cross wind situation you are ideally approaching your berth going astern into the wind. The ‘skill’ is turning into your berth so that your bow is still moving to windward when you stop. This gives you time to get the windward control line on.
      You are correct that once this line is on then you can motor against it to control your boat. However, the line should be on the windward stern cleat. If it is on the midships cleat as you suggest then it creates a forward pivot point. So not surprising your boat will be all over the place.
      Practice Nick’s approach and you will find your docking much easier in the future, singlehanded or not!

      Having done this manoeuvre with a 15knot wind on the beam as a novice sailor on a sharpen up flotilla in May I can vouch that I have never felt in more control whilst driving against my windward stern line. Might be worth looking at joining a flotilla to see what other tricks you can pick up from Nick

      Sometimes they do. It can be a bit hit and miss, and they do dock hundreds of boats during the summer....
