Our daily temperatures went from 60 degrees to 80 degrees overnight! It's been 80 degrees for the last couple of days and it's finally time to turn on the sprinklers.
I have the Hunter Rotator MP1000 sprinkler heads. These "high efficiency" heads are stated to run 30% more efficient than other sprinkler heads on the market. Keep in mind there are some marketing misnomers. This does not mean that they run less time and save you money on water. What it means is these heads have spider leg output which puts out bigger droplet size. This means less evaporation and more water to the lawn. They also run at 40psi or less allowing you to put more heads on one station. They work well in areas that have pressure issues.
It's important to understand these heads run less water per hour than any head on the market. Watering 101, you have to have 6" to 8" of water saturation to keep grass happy. Which means you have to understand how much water is coming out of the sprinklers. These hunter heads only put out .4" or less water per hour. Average sprinklers put out .7" to .85" per hour. Which means you will have to run your hunter rotator mp heads for much longer than the average sprinkler head.
Steps to turning on the sprinklers
1. locate the water irrigation stop valve
2. walk 6 to 15 feet in front of the water irrigation stop valve and find the sprinkler on/off valve tube
3. use a sprinkler key that's shaped like a T bar and turn it counter clockwise to turn the valve to the run position.
4. inspect the line for leaks.
5. if you have an irrigation backflow valve turn the valves to the on position or parallel to the pipes.
6. inspect all the valve boxes for leaks.
7. turn on your sprinklers and inspect the heads
By this point the sprinklers should be up and running. Inspect the heads for spray patterns and leaks. If you have broken heads check the filters first. Many times it's a plugged filter causing the issues and not a broken head.
Calibration water output test
Step 1: go to google maps and print a copy of the arial view of your yard.
Step 2. Place like sized cups or rain gauge cups between heads
Steps 3. run a 20 min cycle
Step 4. Record how many inches are in each cup according to your placement on the map. This will tell you where and if you have coverage problems.
Step 5. Do the math to figure out how many minutes a week you need to run your sprinklers. In Utah for the month of may, average temps between 75 and 80 degrees, we need 1". June average 80 degrees to 90 we need 1.5", July -August 87 degrees to 100 degrees we need 1.5" to 2". The goal is to run the sprinklers 2 to 3 days a week maximum for clay and loam based soil and 3 to 4 days per week for sandy soil. - Навчання та стиль

I put these hunter heads on my lawns about four years ago... My son-in-law put then in his yard, and I liked the look. Now that I have used them; I love them... Other sprinkler heads lose a lot of water in the form of vaporization. The Hunter Mp heads shoot that finger stream that puts less of the water into mist. And, What happens with most heads is that much of that mist vaporizes before the H2O hits the grass... Most of all; the finger spray that the Hunter MP puts out looks incredibly cool... Net net... They are worth the money, time, and effort to put them in...
Soo true. I really love them now that I understand them. My only issue is I have to replace them every 2 to 3 years and theyre a bit pricy. I think I may have too much pressure in the line, may be the underlying issue.

Great video. I've had a couple of those same heads go bad on 2nd season of use. You really do need to water with these about 3 hrs each zone a week maybe more with sandy soil. I start zone 1 at 3 am and finish zone 6 at 9 am, times 3 times a week minimum. Even then may not be enough if you aren't getting supplemented with rain and have sandy soil in heat of summer has been my experience.

Hi Ginja, I went through this last year with hunter pgp sprinklers. I get about .44 inches per hour. I read they are rated for .40. So I have to water about 2 hours and 20 minutes to get an inch of water. I used the measuring cups like you did. I already got the warning letter from the water authority about usage rates. They must be lawn haters! Thanks for the great videos.

Just a few quick tips from an irrigation contractor. MP Rotators operate best at 40 PSI, but they do not self regulate at 40 PSI. You can buy spray bodies that regulate the pressure to 30 PSI, or 40 PSI, depending on the model you get. I recommend using pressure regulated bodies, as they even out the precipitation rate of all of your heads. Without them, nozzles tend to water heavier the closer to the valve they are. They also work well to prevent misting with standard spray nozzles, making the droplets larger and less prone to wind and evaporation.
One thing that helps a lot with tilting heads is to use Marlex elbows. You put them between your spray body and funny elbow. Doing this, you can actually get the head to sit perfectly vertical without anything propping it up. Once you pack dirt around it, you have a head that is much more likely to stay vertical.

@@DEXTVHD Personally I'm not a huge fan of gear driven rotors. They are a pain to adjust and get harder to adjust as they get older. They have a lot of moving parts, so they are more prone to failure.
If you're not totally sure, maybe design your system so it can work with PGPs. MPs are low flow nozzles, so if you design your system around them, you won't be able to later switch to higher flow heads like the PGP if you decide you don't like the MPs.
@@Sloot786 if you can help I have a 77'x55' backyard. Should i use mp, i20, pgp heads? And what valves and controller? As I'm looking for a irrigation system there is alot to choose from and I have no clue what to put together.
@@undercover4218 MPs have a much lower precipitation rate than the gear driven rotors you listed, meaning they demand fewer gallons per minute, which allows you to put more of them on a single station.
That translates to fewer valves and less pipe, BUT you have to run them longer (more than an hour). This makes them less susceptible to run off, but something to consider if you are using a pump. This also means that if you have a break in your line or a broken head, it will be gushing out water for a longer period of time while the station runs.
If you decide on a gear driven rotor, I recommend the Rainbird 5000 over the Hunter ones you listed.
For valves, I prefer the Hunter PGV. They are reliable and the easiest to service of all the valves I've used.
If your timer can be installed within wifi range, I recommend using a smart timer. They can query the weather and automatically add rain delays.
I made it until Mother's Day without watering this year. And only had to water a cycle in my back lawn because it is south facing and was showing a lot of stress. Front lawn made it until the storms this weekend!
That's awesome. I had to spot water several times to keep up. My fence killed me. The reflection heated the soil up pretty bad hahaha.
Mine is the reflectuon off the house in the back yard. Causes me the same issue.

Don't have sprinklers and I really don't irrigate (I know I should) but I enjoyed the video. Tons of info and somewhat different from other school of thought and I like that. You do things a little different that others which means more ways that I can find out what to do and or correct issues. I'm and information junkie

So I had traditional Hunter heads in my last house that worked great. I bought 7 of the rainbird rotary heads with yellow nozzles for my new house and hate them. My current situation is much different being on the side of a mountain, but they're overall weak. And i only have 2 per zone. Definitely not the 25ft throw they advertise.

Soil type and grade of lawn determines how much water you need as well. The low GPM is ideal for tight soils such as clay and that are slightly sloped, which reduces run-off. You don't want to increase the time for these if you have clay soil and sloped yard. They have different heads for GPM, so it's not just the distance that's factored into their other models.

I got a bunch of those same water cups, and they helped me get an idea of what kind of coverage I was getting in a certain amount of time, BUT....
I swear by the soil probe. It gives me such a great insight into where my reservoir level is, that I stopped using the containers altogether. An actual soil sample includes any rain bonus and helps me identify where my faster drying spots are, before they become a problem.
I do have one question, though. What color orange do you use for your beard? Mine is white, so open to suggestions.

The MP Rotators DO put out a low precipitation rate which works well when overseeding when you just want to keep the seed bed moist or if you have any slopes in your yard as the low precipitation rate allows the water to soak in and not runoff.
less minutes more run times per day. amount of water stays the same.

As long as it hold water and isn't dust it should be fine. I'd put 6 to 9" of top soil then seed with tenacity and a soil conditioner. Might wanna consider couple hundred pounds of gypsum too

Hey Lawn Ginja, I let my front lawn get over run with weeds (clover, Dandelions, crab grass, and some weed with a tiny white flower on it?) over the years. This year i decided to do something about it. I sprayed my yard with a mix of Speedzone and Quinclorac at the recommended rate. A week later almost all the weeds are dead. But now my lawn is pretty much brown with just some Bermuda and St Augustine here and there. I went ahead and put down some granular Humic Acid and Fertilizer a couple of days ago. Will the little bit of Bermuda and St Augustine i have spread to the rest of the lawn and how should should I set my sprinkler system? Right now it's set to water every day at 6:30am for 10 minutes every zone.
Hi John. Nice job getting out on the lawn and getting things done. Warm season grass types like yours begin growing when the ground temps are 65 degrees. get a meat thermometer and measure the ground temps. if its above 65 then we can focus on regular fertilization services and proper watering. As a general rule of thumb we want water penetrating 6" deep into the soil at all times. ideally we want this "reservoir" and the water we replace each week will be to top this reservoir off. the water we replace will be from evaporation. in my area we want 1" of water per week right now to sustain. I'm not sure what those numbers would be in your area. You can contact your local extensions department or get a hold of your local department of agriculture department. You'll want to know how many inches of water per week you need in the summer months and fall months. as it gets hotter the numbers will change. you will need to do a water output cup test to figure out how many inches of water per hour you output. check myallgreen.com/watering.

I recently moved to a home that has Hunter, 10 zones. Each zone has 3-4 older heads, which I'm replacing.
Do these zones, now after these low flow rotators, have to spray zone-by-zone or can they all be used at once, or maybe grouped together on the timer to make 2 or 4 spray zones?
I also bought various colored lawn flags from Amazon and at first, I'll color code each zone and note the zone # by writing on the flag and making a map. I'll also measure between heads to choose the best rotator.
I had read somewhere that each head spray should reach the nearest heads, so I'll adjust each one until it hits the nearest flags.
Funny part is one sprinkler currently between homes and wooden fences sprays 360 degrees, but there's not much space between the fences. Maybe 8 feet. So that one sprays my lawn, up my fence, to the other part of lawn and theirs, and then up their fence into thei back yard lol. I laughed hard the first time I saw that.
Hi robert. it all comes down to flow rate on what your system can handle and the amount of pressure through the lines. commonly you wouldn't spray 2 zones at the same time due to pressure. each zone can handle so many heads at a time. the lower pressure heads means the zone can handle more heads. othe general rule of thumb is you want double or triple overlap coverage. this means that 3 heads hit the same area. if you have triple coverge throughout you'll want to make it even throughout the zone, don't mix double coverage and triple coverage unless you have heavy shade issues. but for the most part there's few exceptions.
How do these jets get full coverage? For example if you set to spray out 10 feet distance... then how does it cover all of the area of the grass from zero to ten feet? Does each individual stream throw a difference distance to cover all of the area as it rotates? Thanks for the help.

I found NP MP Rotators at Sprinkler Warehouse for less than $6 each. I bought a PRO Spray 04 with an MP300090 for less than $7.50 each. We have been in this house for 14 years and I have been working to reduce the water bill! I had known what was available until recently when I decided to add another zone with 4 or 5 heads. Seeing the price I'm going to start replacing all of the rotors with this product. I hope that this will work out.
It's a great product. I wish the heads were built better. I find they break every other season. Other than that you can dial the water in really well. just understand their are a ton of mis marketed expectations. Ginja just curious why you choose the Hunter MPs over the Rain Bird RVANs? I wasn’t very impressed with MPs but love the RVANs. On the rotor side I just fell in love & married the Hunter I20s. Stainless Steel Baby! Just replaced my old tired Rain Birds. The nozzle selection is awesome. The shrub nozzle is great to skim lawn under trampoline & reducing throw to stay off sidewalks & neighborhoods. RVANs mixed with I20s in an awesome combo: solved my dry spots.

Great vid man, very informative. Thinking of getting these for my lawn but have a couple of questions if I may be so bold. Firstly, do these heads water right next to themselves of throw the water leaving a dry patch next to them. Secondly, I have lowish water pressure at 30psi, how many heads can i run of this pressure. Cheers.
Great question. They're rated at 40psi according to the manufacturer. I would go to a sprinkler website page that had software to calculate number of heads you could run at your pressure.
My experience is the heads have multiple angles that have allowed even coverage. Best practice is to have double to triple coverage through one area.

Great lawn and great channel. Rip out that old controller and put in a Rachio. Saves me time walking back and forth to the garage, I just do it from my phone along with all the great features such as Wind/Weather skip etc. Also check out Rainbird R-VAN nozzles. I dumped my Hunter stuff. Thicker and more solid streams of water preventing wind blow off and also no tool radius and throw adjustment and flushing by pulling up on the nozzle. You won't find them at Home Depot, I get them from Amazon.
Great advice Packetattack. I'll have to try it. I do agree thicker streams of water is better for sure. I need to try the rachio. I've avoided them from lawn assessment where they weren't watering enough due to the settings but in all fairness it was probably user error.
@@pestandlawnginja most of the local box stores stock the orbit bhye, which is a wifi controller with smart phone connectivity. Most the local water districts will give you a rebate of up to half the cost of the controller too.

Whereas I dig into the settings and configure nozzle type, soil type, slope, sun exposure etc., so the watering is fully customizable. I have 1/3 acre with very steep slopes and clay soil, the Rachio will do a cycle soak because clay doesn't uptake water like sandy soil would. So a 20 minute zone, Rachio will do a 8 and 12 or a 10 and 10 automatically. Really cool stuff. The Rachio 3, you can buy an add on flowmeter to track GPM per zone.

Any thoughts on this vs the rainbird rvan? I like the larger droplet size RB has to offer especially because my area can get windy at times and right at that sweet spot of 15-20mph where it blows most sprinklers water
That makes a ton of sense. I've seen them in action but i've never had the pleasure of using them first hand. might be worth the gamble. my biggest issue is the cost of the mp rotator. $8 per head for something that lasts a few seasons.
Hard to find replacements for Rvans and MP rotators at brick and mortar stores. I’m thinking of switching to old MPR sprays cuz I’m sick of rvans failing (either no spin or incomplete arc). Debating on trying the 800 and 815 rotators since I have short distances. Puts down .8 per hour, so twice regular MP.
I have the regular hunter heads. How do you modify them for the MP ones?
You'll need to bring one of the sprinkler units to a sprinkler store and make sure the heads fit your current setup. other than that it's as easy as screwing off the top and replacing it.
The head wont come up automatically like they used to one of them. i manually have to pull them and then they run.. any quick fix/recommendation..

Just picked up the hunter rotators to replace the rain bird rotators I put on last year. The rain birds are constantly not rotating and I have to go spin them or flush them to get movement. Most lawns down here have a lot of clay. So even though it only takes 12 minutes for me to get 1/2” of water with rain birds, I wind up with runoff. I’m very curious to see how these hunter nozzles do to improve absorption and stopping runoff.
I used to hate them. I love them now that i understand them. pushes the water slowly into the soil. just be sure to do the cup test and make the appropriate time adjustments
@@pestandlawnginja the hunter nozzles combined with the cycle and soak timing feature got rid of 90% of the runoff I was experiencing with the rain bird nozzles. Even with the cycle and soak, the rain birds still had a decent amount of run off. My neighbors all say “ oh, you have the fancy sprinklers!” Lol. I tell them how easy it is to install the nozzles and quit wasting water, but they continue to water the sidewalk with run off like they expect it to grow as well🤣.
Could you presumably replace PGP's with these assuming there is an MP rotator that can match the radius of the existing layout for head to head coverage?
yes you can as long as you can regulate the pressure. these heads are low flow beyond anything i've seen. if there's too much pressure the heads blow.

wish i was the sprinkler expert on this one but i'm not. however i would start by getting a pressure regulator that has a head attachment, meaning it T's off the head. that way you can see what the actual running pressure it. should be able to get one on amazon

That is a topic i plan on getting into in 2021. I haven't done enough research to come to a solid conclusion of what's best. So far I like the traditional impact heads that allow you to daisy chain them to several hoses.
With those rotary sprinklers putting out so much less, is the water usage much lower? And if you increase the time from say 30 minutes to 45 or 60 minutes, are you equalling the output of the regular sprinklers? I'm always afraid that I'm going to significantly increase my water bill with those
Great question. Where you save is less surface runoff. The distribution is more precise. Less misting as well.
Nice tip and very nice lawn!! Quick question, is your goal for watering is half inch per 1 hr and 45 mins? And multiplied by two to achieve 1 inch a week? Do you recommend watering for 3.5 hrs once a week and will still reach at least 1 inch?
There's no particular goal. The issue is just figuring out what your output is so you can replace the weekly evaporation rate. what I show in this video is my output rate. you'd want to copy it per section and figure out what your flow rates are.

If you have 80 psi to the system can I use those MP rotators? I haven't seen anything on the Hunter website is if you have to have a psi reducer at a couple of zones I want to install those heads.
I'm at 60. You should be fine. Just make the adjustment at the solenoid.
@@pestandlawnginja one of the zones has 3 Rotors and 7 regular fan spray heads all with a 1" supply line and a saddle clamped over the supply with about a 1/4" hole to supply each head the other zone has 6 spray heads isn't the overall pressure reduced if the supply to each head is reduced to a 1/4"?

How reliable are these? Years? Months? I am looking at installing these in an orchard. I have plenty of pressure and would be irrigating about 1200 trees.
They're not super reliable. I average 1.5 seasons per head. 3 if I'm lucky

How often do these nozzles last? I was told that they have to be replaced frequently due to failing or clogging by local irrigation company.
From my experience the failures are mostly due to too much pressure through the lines. As a result hunter created a pressure regulated case and head that they sell together. I’ve experienced this malfunction personally. The heads that went bad gave me 3-4 years

@@MrJrobb182 I didn't have the proper case and I got 3-4 years. I've heard rumors that with the pressure regulator people were getting double but I really don't know. I've got some heads that are 6 years old and still working but its only a few out of all of them.

How do you adjust it so it sprays 360 ?
In this model you have to buy the green top that is made to do 360 degrees. the red / orange heads only do 180 -90 degrees by design.
I don't mess around with cleaning out filters. I just change out the whole nozzle itself.

I think the water measuring cups are too small for accurate reading. From what is visually coming out of those sprinklers.
Try with a normal 2 or 4 cup cooking one next time you are watering. You might have to halve the watering time.

Really bad info on the real use and specs on the MP they have a matched rate with rotors like the PGP but not standard spray nozzles the put water down slower like rotors do
