  • Hello Guys,
Today we will learn about how to calculate the weight of various shapes. Please watch video till end so that I will give you link of Weight calculator in excel. So without wasting the time lets get started.
Do you wonder how Space agencies or Astro physist find the weight of planets & interstellar objects without weighing machine. if you don't then lets go to basic first.
Measurement of weight is very important in everyday life. We are using weight calculations for Tool design & machine design, to purchase the raw material by weight and to measure the weight where weighing machine cant work.
To find the weight is very common & important in engineering world. Weight of various shapes like Triangular, Hexagonal, Pipes are easy to calculate than we think. but before we know to calculate the weight we need to understand the basic terms associated with weight.
AS per text books weight is defined as the force exerted on a body by gravity.
In 1901, the 3rd General Conference on Weights and Measures, established this as their official definition of weight:
"The word weight denotes a quantity of the same nature as a force: the weight of a body is the product of its mass and the acceleration due to gravity."
    F=mg where F= force, m = mass, g = gravitational force
Weight is measured in many units of different system like
    Other units: pound-force (lbf)
    In SI base units: kg⋅m⋅s−2
    SI unit: newton (N)
Volume is the quantity of three-dimensional space enclosed by a closed surface, for example, the space that a substance
(solid, liquid, gas, or plasma) or shape occupies or contains. Volume is often quantified numerically using the SI derived unit,
the cubic metre. The volume of a container is generally understood to be the capacity of the container; i. e.,
the amount of fluid (gas or liquid) that the container could hold, rather than the amount of space the container itself displaces.
The density, or we can say more precisely, the volumetric mass density, of a substance is its mass per unit volume.
The symbol most often used for density is ρ (the lower case Greek letter rho)
Every material have some specific material density. In this chart you can check the specific material density of various material.
In this video I will use specific material density of steel 7850 Kg/m³ which is alloy of Iron & Carbon and unit of lengths are in mm.
    Square Block
So First e will calculate the Weight of Square Block which is very simple
    Weight = Volume X Density
Where Volume of Square block is multiplication of 3 sides length which is L X L X L
    So Weight of Bloc is L X L X L X 7850
Lets take an example a Square block of 200mm sides. So we need to change the units of length from mm to meter so I divide the length 200mm by 1000
    Round Bar
In the case of round bar Volume is area * Length
So weight is Volume x Density
Lets take an example Round bar of 100mm die & 500mm length
    so pi x d/2 * length 500 = 0.05
    T-Bar
In case of T -Bars its little tricky
    Volume of T is ((Side(A) * tf) + ((Side(B)-tf) * tw)) * Length(l)
So weight is just Volume x Density
    Triangular Bar
next is Triangular bar Volume(v) = √3 / 4 * Side(A) square * Length(l) (This formulae works for equilateral triangle having all 3 side are of equal length)
    Hexagonal Bar
Now at last we will calculate the weight of Hexagonal bar So formula of volume is
    Volume(v) = ((√3)* 1/2 * Side(S) * Side(S) * Length(l)
