I started learning about self sufficiency in 2010. I was really discouraged because I was poor and living month to month in a condo barely able to keep food on the table. I knew nothing about growing, preserving food or keeping chickens. Years went by but I kept doing my low paying corp job and learning. Gradually I worked my way to owning a home in the country with 3/4 acre, I have chickens, a garden, I learned to preserve food and I have everything I need. I am still poor but I feel rich. If you are living in the city and working a corp job just keep learning and never give up. I am hoping the best for you. If a 67 year old single woman can do it then you can too.
So true. I was 68 when I bought and moved to this homestead on two acres. Life is so much calmer out of the city. I grew a garden for the first time since my parent's gardens when I was a kid. Wishing you all the best in your self reliance journey.
Thanks for sharing this. My wife and I are around age 50 and sometimes get discouraged about being "too old" for this. Definitely encouraging to hear from others who've done it and are sustaining.
@@yahusrevus, 50 is not “old” and certainly not *too* old. I am 61 and started my gardening and closer association with nature, and living in a small community. It is never too late, and I am pretty sure I am not too old for it so, enjoy what you do and aim for this lifestyle, it seems to work.
I turn 50 this year, and what lies ahead is concerning….now more than ever, the notion of self-reliance is a goal I’m working towards. The information you provide via your channels is priceless….
I started this homestead six years ago but practiced self sufficiency and bushcrafting most of my life. I'm 66 now and doing great. I enjoy watching your projects.
60, in Dandridge doing the same and similarly growing up. We are 3 years in but first two were part-time and focused entirely on infrastructure. As of last month we have established 17 sheep, 25 layers, 3 head of cattle, two bee hives and a one acre garden. Canning, waterbathing, dehydrating, pickling and freeze drying preserved several to six months of veggies, broths, meals, etc. It’s early and we are being graceful to ourselves as we transition from an international executive lifestyle to the homestead, but honestly couldn’t be happier. All the best in your new TN home, our favorite place in the world!!
Shawn, You are SO smart to be doing this. Always live within your means. Never squander your money. Be self-sufficient. Save for a rainy day. Hope you'll feel better very soon!
You may already know this but in Australia we very quickly get weavils in stored grain. Our trick and this has never failed me is to put dried bay leaves in every pail of grain, keeps bugs at bay (pardon the pun). Very interesting and informative video. Thank you.
I live in the US and also put bay leaves in my grains, then I seal them in Mylar bags inside of buckets. No bugs or mice are getting free meals here. 😉
Bay Leaves... good to know... Thanks. I've been using food grade diatomaceous earth in my buckets... also have O2 absorbers and desiccant packets. I like the natural, non toxic option you suggest 😊
Shawn, that full circle… you were poor when a kid, but you were ‘banking’ the knowledge and experience that you are using today to take care of your family. Not only just yourself…you are teaching many who’ve come to enjoy your expertise to better their lives as well:) God bless you and keep you.
Excellent video!! My parents came from Norway. In the late 40's. They both grew up on farms, so if you didn't make it, raise it or grow it, you didn't have it. My mom made sure i learned all the old fashioned skills. Making all my clothes, gardening & canning. My brother's worked with my dad a old fashioned builder. Finally my parents let me work with him too. I learned to frame a house, hang windows & doors. Lay floors, tile work, the electrical & plumbing. I my mid 50's it's been a great help. I just wish we had more land. Your channels are so encouraging & fun to watch. Thank you.
I enjoyed this. I did exactly what you are talking about. We bought 3 acres in 2019 and I bought a trailer at the end of the year and paid cash. I started canning meat that I bought on sale. At the beginning of Covid I moved out to the property and started fixing up the place and doing serious gardening. I then bought chickens. We had bought an outdoor wood stove when we bought the house, but now we have an indoor efficient wood stove that we can use not only for heating the house but also for heating water and some cooking. We have a single 55 gallon barrel for water catchment and we do have a wet weather spring that flows through our property. The property had out buildings for raising animals and storage as well as an old root cellar that we can fix up. I have about 15 5 gallon buckets with staples. We have no debt on our home or our vehicles.
@@donnabrown1518 Hello Donna I have had a varmint problem too. You really have to build a sturdy cage and add a second floor of wire underneath so raccoons can not reach in. I also had a fence with barbwire at the bottom so dogs could not dig in. Secured leg hold traps discouraged other problems. Everything wants a easy dinner.
I live in a portion of the country that has a high probability of getting Hurricanes. During the Hurricane season, many people prepare for being able to survive without electricity, gas, food or water for several weeks. I would suggest the entire country to stock up on supplies that you could survive without electricity, gas, food or water for at least 24 months. It's always a wise decision to plan ahead and be prepared.
Shawn mentioned at least 5 real and present dangers facing everyone. Greta your right. Now is the time to plan ahead and be prepared. Even if you live in an apartment. No matter what the situation. Just think through the worse situation disaster scenerio. Then do something to fix it.
Being in the Canadian Military i struggle with self reliance. Moving regularly and being involved with world issues takes you away from building a safe life at home. 10 years left until i retire, hopefully everything holds out until then. But we always have a 1 year supply of food on hand, personal defense and a couple solar generators. Just need a homestead.
Thanks so much for your service! I really appreciate all you have done for me as a Canadian. Not too many would sacrifice their own life just to protect others!
This was great Shawn. PLEASE, above all else,, enjoy your life in the woods and time with your wife especially..my life was torn apart when my husband of 52 years died and I had to leave our little place in the woods. I am living the life through your videos and enjoying Calli since I am not allowed pets here. I lost the desire to do all the preserving .but at 77 and on no meds, I am getting interested again although I now live in an apartment. I would like to see more preserving of food, especially canning. I know it would give me the push I need to do again what I did for years. Still looking forward to that cookbook you talked about a few years ago:) Greetings from North bay Ontario.
77 is not old. There are 90 y old people living in the countryside by themselves, at least in E. Europe and probably elsewhere. Old is mainly in the mind.
Love your channels - all of them. Love chats like these that are more specific, but also love your Self Reliance videos. My husband always watches these, and don’t underestimate the messages you get across even with little comments here and there… and even more so, with your *actions*. I suspect a lot of husbands trust your words because they’ve seen your work. Less drama feels more authentic and more trustworthy 👍🏼
Another thing to stock, especially if one is in an urban environment, is seeds for sprouting in a sprouting jar. While we can also sprout the oats, wheat, and beans, adding seeds like broccoli, alfalfa, etc. can provide additional nutrients, and is easy to do. A little will go a long way.😊
I am 60 years old and have had to "start over" early in life due to many reasons. I have since, like you, set up my children for success. None of my family, including cousins, had parents that both worked and were able to save substantial amounts of money. My parents did not give me anything except life skills. I had no idea how to manage money or assets. I was pushed away knowing that I alone would be responsible for my future. My children were taught early how to manage money and assets. I don't know if they were actually taking in life skills and how to deal with hardships. The difference between our generation and theirs is they have parents that live to see that their children have everything and are set up for success. Our generation parents produced enough assets to survive week by week. I am not optimistic that our children have the tools to survive when we are gone.
Shawn, I've been a fan for a while and you have inspired many of the changes our family has done to become more self reliant n resilient in these worrisome times. You and I live fairly close to eachother so I hope when the time comes, we can be part of the same community of the folks that trade and support efforts of survival ...until then, take good care!
hey mr james, i respect you so much , ive always wanted tu live that lifestlle i got sick sick and my dreams died, im goinng on 56 years now i love you shawn and your videos, you rock
Hope you and your family feel better very soon. I was also sick over the holidays. Took everything I had in me to cook for a day. Then I just laid around, but I ate good. Holidays passed and also feeling better. I think many folks are in for a big surprise if they have not started to prepare for what is ahead. We have been told for years now to prep with food and water. Take heed folks, it is not too late to stock what you need for at least a month. Even if it is just the basics, you will be glad you did. ♥
I have a place in northern MN, an 1850 sq ft home on 10 acres I bought in 2012 and have been renting it to the same tenant since day 1. I bought this for a future retirement home but after I finally did retire in 2017 my wife and I developed health issues. I would really like to still retire there but we need to be close to a city hospital because of our insurance. The Insurance companies offer very few options of doctors out there and the nearest hospital is over 50 miles away. I was lucky to get one doctor within 20 miles. so we decided to continue to rent it. I wish you luck Shawn. Stay healthy!
So strange how all the Homestead I watch are ALL getting sick and sicker! They hardly see anyone, they get fresh air, they work hard, they eat their own food thaqt they raise and grow, they are more peaceful - and they are STILL getting sick. WOW! What a bummer!~ Glad you are not too, too sick Shawn. God Bless you and your family!
Well it’s not like they’re totally isolated from modern society. Also they have families working and shopping and mingling in the cities, so the bugs inevitably find everyone.
I look forward to hearing your videos about clearing debt, that’s the one big issue with our plans right now. We’ve had to move off-grid unexpectedly last summer, which was something we always wanted to do but were not financially prepared for it and it’s taken a toll on our wallets. We have very basic solar and get our water for cleaning and bathing from a nearby lake, but we still have so far to go before we feel self-reliant. I very much look forward to your future videos 😊
Yes, more please. Especially pay off house debt and staying this process of prepping at age 57. I already have 30 days food for 2 people. I have old ways skills of canning, bread making, fire building, etc. need a wood stove but we’re on a tight budget. Mortgage on the house etc.
Thank you for the excellent information as always. I have one additional suggestion to your food storage buckets. Rodents, mainly rats, can chew through plastic buckets. I also use clean metal garbage cans. If you store them outside in a sheltered place, the metal lids need to be sealed around the handles where there are small holes.
Thanks. We are off grid and hunt, fish, and grow our food, herbs, etc. But I really haven't thought to stock up on foods like that. I will have to start that this week. Even for those of us who are already off grid, its nice having other people takes on it, to learn from each other, and to just have someone familiar with it to talk off grid with. Take care and I hope you're all feeling better soon.
I am 66 years old. I am around people with flue, covid, and so far so good I haven't got sick in about 20 years. I slice some ginger in my lemon tea every day. I eat fresh garlic with a spoon of honey in the morning on an empty stomach for 7 days when I Know I've been around someone sick. Garlic will cure your flu chew some up with a spoon of honey. Feel better soon..
I Like drinking elderberry with honey in it. I also use colloidal silver and make my own. Bought the kit for a hundred dollars online. Silver is my anti-botic go to. Store that up too!
Really excellent that you are sharing this stuff with your large audience Shawn. Kudos! The more people informed and prepared, the less people starving and behaving badly when bad times come. History shows we are overdue for conflict. Great tip on the Berkey filters in 5gal buckets for water filtration too. I spent just a bit more and used 20qt stock pots from Walmart to avoid plastic taste or the plastic possibly absorbing anything. Even if nothing happens, what does it hurt to be prepared, folks?
@@annking1576 And?? As I said, I preferred to go with stainless steel for a few reasons. Still much cheaper then an official Berkey. In a pinch though, even Home Depot buckets would work fine for someone if you have the filters
Thank You Shawn, Family and Cali of course! I’ve enjoyed and learned from your channel over the years. Indeed, 2024 may well be a rough one and at the same time the best ever. It’s a time of awakening and realization of reality, truth. In spite of everything that appears negative, I believe humans are coming to see all humans as one family. For it is We The People that can create abundance for all and be of service to each other and our Mother Earth. I do my best to live in this positive reality. For living in the positive one at a time creates that way in which we live. Love, Light, Peace, Abundance and Joy of Being! DaveyJO in Pennsylvania
Denkt dran Jesus liebt Dich! Amen. Und an Gottes Segen ist alles gelegen. Amen. Shalom Shalom.
@@martinwuethrich9384Religion is just a distraction from the truth that is life and death and the burden of dealing with it all. The only way people can come together and be happy is if they choose to face the reality in front of them and learn and grow from it. Not to run from it and hide like a coward in the hope of blessings from a dead person named Jesus. God in my experience and opinion is just a word used to describe the all encompassing reality of the universe and all of its unknowns and depths. This is much more fascinating and fulfilling to me spiritually and emotionally. Because that way I feel that i am apart of this, whereas relgions want you to believe that you are never good enough. Religion is a crapshoot, and is Satan incarnate. Believe in yourself and the infinite force of reality that you are able to live an experience. I Choose not to believe what greedy religions convince millions of people to believe in order to make trillions of dollars profiting off of their ignorance. Peace to whoever reads this. ✌️🙏
Age always seems to be a problem. Either, a person thinks they are too young or too old. Now because my age is above 80, I could lay around and think it is done. NOT TRUE, now I see there are so many ways to help others especially Family members. Therefore, I force myself to do a days work doing something. Whatever age, its in the doing and not over thinking. If you think you can't, you will never will. Yes, safety must always be a factor. Safety while doing.
HI SHAWN!! THANK YOU FOR SHARING THIS. HOPE YOUR BETTER AS WELL AS YOUR FAMILY. I APPRECIATE THE TIPS ON FOOD STORAGE, I TRY TO DO A PREPPER PANTRY AND IT'S HARD TO GET THE LARGE BAGS OF STAPLES LIKE RICE AND BEANS ETC PLUS LEARNING TO PUT IODIZED SALT PACKETS TO KEEP THEM FRESH AND FREE FROM BUGS ETC. HOPEFULLY I CAN ACHIEVE THIS. WELL THANKS FOR SHARING AND STAY SAFE AND HEALTHY ❤️ 🙏
@nitabourne304 - just an FYI that I recently found out - dried beans must be cooked or canned before 2 years. If not, trying to cook them will be like trying to cook rocks & they'll be just about that hard. Canning before 2 yrs will lengthen their storage 2-3+ years.
You always have something to offer! My family has been watching your channel since 2019 when the pandemic started. We lived in an urban desert community at the time and it was like a breath of fresh air to watch your channel, even though we couldn't get out we felt like the Canadian wilderness was in our backyard. Thank you so much for all you do. May 2024 be your greatest year ever!
Your family is blessed! You work so hard for them. I would love to see a picture of the home you built for the family. You have such a beautiful family. I hope your wife will be willing to show us what she has learned. Food storage, cheese making etc. You are a dynamic duo. I hope Emily is feeling better. It’s a joy to watch her do the things that you taught her. I have enjoyed your channel’s immensely. Thank you for sharing your wealth of knowledge. Very admirable. ❤
I know how to make cottage cheese , bread , butter ( from cream ) , pasta by hand, i grow vegetables and preserve everything for winter, i make sweaters for winter with knitting, i make organic soaps and cream , and also I make my own clothes , I think that a lot for one person 😄
Hi Shawn. Nice learning about your childhood and home. I'm quite a bit older than you are, in relation to your video title. While It was common for rural homes to have a outhouse, many also had a smaller room or larger size closet with hung curtains to separate where they put two pots with two lids to potty, and had a wash basin bowl and pitcher with wash clothes and towels. Especially during the winter months which made it much safer and easier for hygiene. And most folks also canned, and stocked up on dry goods, and had smoke houses for smoking meats that they'd last much longer, made their own butter and cheese, and most had at least one dairy cow for milk and chickens for eggs. They always put out gardens for vegetables and fruits, and they placed large blocks of ice in the old refrigerators or metal boxes on a back porch along with porch wall shelves to keep items cold during winter months. So they were pretty good at being prepared and self sufficient - actually. And that was basic living if they were not farmers, and thrn the farmers were even more proficient and prepared. Folks used coal stoves, oil stoves, wood stoves, then went to steam boilers for heat during the winter months, and most had wood burning kitchen stoves for cooking, too year round, while others made a outdoor kitchen resembling similar to their indoor kitchen for summer months. Women sewed and dyed cotton clothing from the old flour sacks using the old wax cut patterns they'd get from the hardware store, or they'd make their own cut patterns for their families. Everyone including the children had morning chores before school and work, and had after work and school chores too. And they were very self sufficient. It wasn't until the turn of the mid century that folks started relying morw and more on store bought items and luxeries. Folks took on additional outside jobs to make extra money, from sewing, to baking, laundrey, to men digging fence post holes, running their mule team pulling a wagon hauling wheat, sacks of flour from the mill and in they'd haul fruits, vegetables come harvest too - driving the wagon some 40, to 80 miles one way then back home after, and did other work too. Folks were very active, they worked hard, in every day life but they knew how to prepare and work for a living. Average folk didn't take vacations, only the more wealthy folk took vacations. This was just life's norm. And they were happy doing it, too. When I look back - it really wasn't that long ago families lived that way. Anyways. Just some food for thought.
I'm saving money to buy land in Northern Spain, and the big issue for me is how to earn an income to pax taxes, insurance... but ill figure it out, iwant to live in the nature and grow my own food.
Happy New Year from Spain, Shawn! I have been following you for years because I like what you do and how you do it. I have a similar trajectory and I am living my dream life like you are in nature, we have the same philosophy/approach. Your work is always inspiring and entertaining. I love your videos. Outstanding! Keep up the good work and best wishes for the new year!

Hi Shawn! I saw your interview with Jean Claud and I'm here to take the steps toward self reliance. Thank you so much for sharing this important information. ❤ Freedom for all who want it.
yes Shawn please keep making these self sufficiency path videos....your experience and unique perspective is much needed and very appreciated especially as the hour grows late for the coming struggle....thank you Shawn n family from all of us out here in the distance
👋 Just found your channel after seeing you on Beyond mystic! So excited to follow your content! Grew up in Muskoka, learned the simple ways from my family. I’m now in my 50s and have been trying to prep the best I can, hard since I’m single and am challenged by chronic illness, however it’s not impossible. It’s better to be prepared than not. Hoping more communities of like minded folks will pop up as we go thru this shift. Looking forward to your content! If some people unsubscribe, I’m sure new folks like myself will find and follow your content! Thanks for sharing!
Thank you, Shawn, and have a Blessed, Content, and Healthy 2024. I have watched your channel longer than I can remember. I find it amazing what you do all by yourself.
Your mention of clothing at the end was interesting, when I was younger I did viking re-enactment, and as part of that I learned to spin weave and Naalbind (a form of viking knitting using a needle) and do leather working. so from that experience, i could (given time) make all my own clothing - like everything its a labour intensive process. I am currently keeping the skills active by Naalbinding a woolen cap for this cold weather. so all skills are worth learning, as if you have a skill, thats a trade item right there, as it can be taught to others. love your channel, but dont see myself building a log cabin and living in the woods as i am 10 years older than you and dont have the fitness any more.
Hello, I have a plastic loom that I am learning to knit on. Making hats and scarves that are warmer than anything used in the past is a small skill but with UA-cam I am always learning new things to make. I am happy to read of your skills!
I worked in the printing and graphic arts industry for 40 years until digital finally started in 2003. I lost my job in traditional printing. I didn't know what I was going to do. I kept working in the industry for 11 more years. I now work as a mill operator at Fuch's North America. I have been with them for 7 years and I have to keep working.
I m 59,still pulling wrenches.Divorce, kids inflation, cost of real estate.I dont really see the day coming where I wont have to work.I ve got the RIP retirement plan, lol. Good luck to you Sir.
Thank you! I’m looking at moving outside of the city within the next 5-10 years, once my kids are a bit older. I’m hoping to be able to organize, prep, practice and save enough to buy land and build a self sufficient small house once I can move out. I’m absorbing all the knowledge I can find. And obviously, given what life has been these past few years, I think we all should be prepping and storing extra food, extra money, learning more manual skills…
We got it here in the states too. My husband's flu sounds like yours and it went through the house. Mine and my grandson lasted 1 day, the others lasted 2-3 weeks. I think the two of us have had this strain before and are immune, I remember having this flu a year ago with my grandson. Guess someone has to be healthy to take care of the others.
This is valuable info, definitely interested to hear more. I had a decent plan going and made progress with property and sustainability, but financially I've been crushed by my cancer diagnosis and treatment. I'm still in recovery and just flying in the breeze at this point. I'm hoping to get healthy by spring, but my capacity for energy output may be somewhat diminished when all said and done.
You're a self-made man, hats off to you., Shawn. Hard work and good decisions-some mistakes for learning-is the key. Really appreciate your insight on these topics.
Mr. James, Thank you very much. Am finding this channel of yours incredibly helpful for my prepping. (Started off watching your other Reliance channel) This is actual information that I can put to immediate use and we appreciate how you have broken it down simply to begin with. We are also concerned with the way the world is turning, in all areas and have been feeling this internal drive to prepare. Cheers from NE Texas.❣️🍀
I think that one of the most important things that a young person can do right now... Is to pay off any debt and only buy what you need and learn how to cook:)
Love these types of videos. Hopefully, a whole new generation of young men and women will take heed. If your daughters do decide to stay in or near the city, you’re still set up to mind your grandchildren during school holidays! 😃
Great video. Glad your fire department let you get water. We had a derecho several years ago and had used all our stored water. Our local fire department refused to give us water, that's the small town usa for you. We are now equipped to provide for ourselves. Live and learn.
Great advice, but those dried beans….they require a lot of water. My advice is learn to pressure can and put them up for future use, or buy canned beans. A lot of them. All this food can be eaten straight out of can if necessary. Pressure can now, we still have electricity. Commercially canned meat and vegetables. I’m just saying ….your advice is spot on Shawn. Start out exactly how you said. Great advice
This type of info is invaluable. The school of hard knocks is the best teacher, but helping cut out some of the knocks in others lives is very good of you.
Great fireside chat Shawn. Timely and enlightening. I think the number one thing to take away from your talk is the immediate need to have food and water stored and available. But the most important thing I think (after renting my entire life) is to have a piece of property . I don't care how nice your RV or camping van is if you don't have land you are never 'safe". You will have to pay for it one way or another. If you have land you at least have the safest camp site you have ever camped in and it's "free". My wife and I bought our first property at age 60 in 2016 after renting for 40 years. We raised a family and always lived in decent neighborhoods so that our kids could grow up in a safe environment and decent schools. We basically sacrificed home ownership for our children. No regrets. Was it a mistake? Maybe, but they are now healthy thriving adults with children of their own and they are helping my wife and I with our new adventure building our Timber Frame mountain lodge style cabin in the mountains of northern Arizona. An amazing family adventure. Been working on it now for 7 years. We're almost there. All "debt-free". We are finally going to be free. My legacy to my children. It will save them long after I'm gone. A person who plants a tree knowing they will never sit in it's shade has begun to understand the meaning of life.
Even with land, you're not safe. Gov can take seize possession of it at any moment should any need arise (at least in the UK). And good luck affording property now, especially on your own, unless you feel like working full time for 40-80 years and unable to enjoy life by then given work injuries (if labour job). Seems like a pipe dream at this point.
It is a blessing to be "Debt Free"... but no one is tax free. Serfs of the land when you own property and dare you miss a payment for tax, that Sheriff Sale stick of shame will be on your property. Been there
SHAWN you are far from POOR !!! I felt the RICHES when I was logging the cabins !!! THERE IS OUR CALI !!! She is the Best PUP IN THE WORLD !!! Always am amazed how OUR CALI loves to hide in different places !!! Cold & flu lasts for awhile Shawn sorry about that but it is the truth !!! Thanksgiving time was the time since then to now with me !!! Slept through 3 days for myself wake up take pills with a little bit of food then sleep again until supper time the all over !!! Sleep all night long !!! Will pray for you & all Chicken broth is Great also !!!
Looking forward to more content like this. Your calm demenor and desire to share your knowledge with others is great. No fear click bait. We are at a time that self reliance is a must at our home and our communities. We added 8 raised garden beds in addition to our small garden we have. Dehydrating, canning, and storing food as you have mentioned is just common sense. The more we learn from each other just makes us better prepared for what life throws at us. Looking forward to more videos. My wife and I have been following for some time now. Thank you for all the time you put into your content videos and hope you are feeling better soon!
I've been watching you for a couple years now, Shawn and I really like this new series on how to do it. I do love watching you do it, but it is great information in today's atmosphere to get people started on becoming more self-reliant. I think as you believe that situations across the world are leading to this necessity. Thank you for providing some insight into sets to take to do so.
These are so interesting, informative, just the best info/education. Thank you Sir.
🇺🇸🇺🇸👍👍🙏🏾🙏🏾
@@yahusrevus, 50 is not “old” and certainly not *too* old. I am 61 and started my gardening and closer association with nature, and living in a small community. It is never too late, and I am pretty sure I am not too old for it so, enjoy what you do and aim for this lifestyle, it seems to work.
You are absolutely amazing way to go!
@@appalachianheartsong5487 Thank you, sounds like you well on your way.
when I was your age I was self reliant I just hope when your my age you still will be.
If available, cloves are great too.
Great tip, thank you!
Shawn, that full circle… you were poor when a kid, but you were ‘banking’ the knowledge and experience that you are using today to take care of your family. Not only just yourself…you are teaching many who’ve come to enjoy your expertise to better their lives as well:) God bless you and keep you.
Here, here, sir. "Despise not the day of small beginnings."
he was never poor , are you kidding ??
@--OfficialShawnJames sure
You might consider getting rabbits. You can feed them grass and vegetable scraps. A few bales of hay with some corn to last the winter .
@@MargaretFinnell I have tried growing rabbits, but I can’t keep them alive. Too many varmits around.
I live in earthquake country and have prepared an emergency shed just in case.
@timkeagy4094. I hope you have rebar supports in your she'd & maybe it'll withstand a quake. Best of luck.
Don't give up on the vision. Thank you for your service.
Thanks so much for your service! I really appreciate all you have done for me as a Canadian. Not too many would sacrifice their own life just to protect others!
Thanks Shawn. I've built up to a year of stored food. After the events of the last few years I for one am not taking things for granted.
I don't believe in destiny, but your full circle makes one think. You are definitely where you belong.
I didn't say I was old. I mentioned 77 BECAUSE I am healthy and well. It was just not possible for me to work in the woods alone.@@simontenkate9601
I am so glad you have decided to expand your knowledge in these areas shawn. We all need and appreciate it more now than ever.
Starting this process, not staying. Autocorrect. Ugh.
Great tip!
I eat fresh garlic with a spoon of honey in the morning on an empty stomach
for 7 days when I Know I've been around someone sick.
@TeutonicNordwind. Amzn. Has food grade 5 gallon buckets with lids.
@@annking1576 And?? As I said, I preferred to go with stainless steel for a few reasons. Still much cheaper then an official Berkey. In a pinch though, even Home Depot buckets would work fine for someone if you have the filters
Thank you Shawn. I'm 23 and getting started. Appreciate you giving direction and actionable steps for the beginner!

I like your outlook on life! Peace and prosperity to you and yours.
Yes to both points! Over 70, still learning and doing and teaching. Over thinking wastes time and energy - just DO!

Thank you Shawn. Sending much success and Peace to you and your family in 2024.

I'm 66 1/2 and I am nearing full retirement age. I decided to keep working 6 or more months and collect my SS benefits. Double the pay.

Und vielen Dank für alles und bitte schonen Sie sich.
All very well when you are at a certain age & physically fit!
Thank you so much. Take care Shawn.
Great video. Glad your fire department let you get water. We had a derecho several years ago and had used all our stored water. Our local fire department refused to give us water, that's the small town usa for you. We are now equipped to provide for ourselves. Live and learn.
Thank you Shawn for another great video. BTW I hope this year continually gets better for you and your family. I hope you get better soon.
I have always liked when you talked to us relaxed sitting back by the fire or outside.
Many thanks, Shawn. Yes, I am super interested in hearing more tips, it is incredibly useful. Thanks!
I would sincerely appreciate more of these types of videos. It's like getting a personal training session from a father figure/mentor. Thank you!
I had it too with a horrible cough and sore throat that lingered for abt a month. Glad you are all better!
Yes more would be great, thanks.
This type of info is invaluable. The school of hard knocks is the best teacher, but helping cut out some of the knocks in others lives is very good of you.
If it was me, I would go back to work until the age of 62 and then retire. Love from North Carolina.
You are such a wealth of knowledge. The things you’ve learned are so appreciated when you share them. Thank you so much Sean.
@@Scriptures_KExactly. If you think you own it just trying not paying the tax bill. You will find out who actually owns your stuff.
I like hearing your story. Its a good one. Keep up all the hard work and store up food for the long run.
It is a blessing to be "Debt Free"... but no one is tax free. Serfs of the land when you own property and dare you miss a payment for tax, that Sheriff Sale stick of shame will be on your property. Been there
@@bobr2959 Thank you. The absolute greatest adventure of my life. The only experiences that top it are marrying my wife and the birth of my children.
