The full quote is often much more relevant, especially to yourself is "A jack of all trades is a master of none, but oftentimes better than a master of one". Thank you so much for sharing so much of your time and keep on being you, it's why so many return again and again.
My passions are, photography, canvas painting acrylic, gardening. My wife was in a coma for 8 months, in grave condition for 3 months, in the hospital for over a year. She is home and slowly recovering. I’m her teacher on walking now, but showed her how to eat again amongst other things. We have a passion of cooking healthy meals, making breads, and increasing the proteins and fiber for hers and the familys survival. This year, I’m setting half the backyard as a garden. Mainly from the knowledge I learned from your gardening at your cabin. Appreciate that.
We personally follow a few that stand out, to our needs and thoughts- You are one of those, Shawn. Dave & Brooke Whipple are others - and then we follow our own path- My husband is an experienced woodsman and carpenter, and I’m a medical professional (cardiac nurse CCM) now retired - We own a small cabin Up North in Michigan and it’s where our peace comes from, as it’s been a blessing from God above for his provisions in our lives- We are both in our mid sixties but still active and able to work and do- it’s a pleasure and privilege- 🌲
"I went to the woods because I wished to live deliberately, to front only the essential facts of life, and see if I could not learn what it had to teach, and not, when I came to die, discover that I had not lived." -- Walden by Henry David Thoreau. One of my fav books too and you certainly remind me of him. Love your work, Shawn, and God bless.
I'm that old lady that loves to watch your calming and edi=ucational and yes, even inspirational, videos. It took me 20 minutes to get through the last 3 minutes where you scanned your library shelves for us, because I had to keep pausing the video so I could copy down the titles of books I wanted to look up and possibly get fro our library. That'll keep me busy the rest of the week! Best quote of the month: "If I had my way, I wouldn't have any of it, and you wouldn't ever have heard of me."
Hi Shawn Im not sure if you can relate to this but some how the outdoors called me for as long as I can remember. I was just as relaxed walking in the forest .if not more so than being at home. My facinations with the lakes ,rivers, mountains turned into passions such as fishing, hunting, hiking and boating. My interest in the outdoors was endless and it still shapes who I am to this day.,,,,,,,,,., I am 65 yrs and live in beautiful British Columbia i was just diagnosed with Parkinsons but nothing can take my love for nature. I wish you and your family well for you sir are living the dream.!!!
Would love to have the books on just one of your bookshelves! There’s an old quote” A point in every direction is a point in no direction at all”! But I think you’ve gathered a master class library!
I have that same thing plus I have to always doing something even in my old age- U have accomplished so much in your life that U show- No one could do much better- Enjoy life - GOD Bless
Who needs the internet.. Simple reading and learning by the fireplace! A book tells a lot about a person, how they think, how they live and how they relate to another person or people. Saw several books we have in common. I very much like what you teach and share.
Cali isso very cute and calm too..The vídeo have a lot things very interesting..you very experience in my things too..uauu. The nature is very beautiful. I only stay sad about some big animal when dead ..congratulation about The rest..all is very beautiful and organization too..God Bless you and your famíly..😊
I have a lot of those books! Been on this journey of 'knowing' things even if I never 'need' to use said knowledge. I don't say "if only" anymore, I just ask what is possible today. Step by step, row by row. Godspeed Good fellow.
i have a few books,,but when i was working Shawn,,most of my life,,i had to go to school every year..and take training for new cars and trucks,,when the new electronic systems that come out,,you had to be very smart,on repairing them..and of course you may take training 5 times a year.yep for over 50 years..yes i use to hunt and fish when i was young, but when i started working,,i just had time for my family..and now everyone is gone,,im over 70,,and i love my hobbies,,working with wood,,building things,,i think thats why i watch you,,love to watch you building things.. be careful Shawn..
I'm the same as you. I'm 77, love the time to build, actually just bought a sawmill this past summer, not letting age stop me. I I can keep doing things then I'm going to keep on. Your not alone...
Definitely an eclectic collection of books, but having listened to you and watched your videos over the years, I can't say as any of it is surprising. Be well, and thanks for sharing.
Cool to see Wild at Heart on your shelf, I'm a big John Eldredge fan. Also NineMile Wolves and One Man's Wilderness, I've read both of those...plus love Jack London as well.
Always enjoy your videos! I took a break and watched “My self Reliance “ old videos ! The one with the giant hamburger ! That really looked good! I am on the carnivore diet but today is going to be a different day ! I am going to be eating a big hamburger with French fries! I am cheating on my diet today ONLY! God bless you Shawn! That big hamburger looked sooooo delicious!
The book that captured me most as a child was "My Side of the Mountain" by Jean George. I have read it over a dozen times, and was excited to share it with my children as they grew. They enjoyed it as much as I. Even as an adult, it still brings back many fond memories and is full of value. I also learnt a lot from the Earth Children Series (Jean M Auel) which contained the original four books: Clan of the Cave Bear, Valley of the Horses, Mammoth Hunters, and Plains of Passage. The fifth and sixth books didn't do much for me as there was too much time between their releases and I suspect the author had a ghost writer helping her. Nonetheless, they were very influential for me. Lastly, the "Hatchet" series by Gary Paulsen were also very great books as a kid. Starting with "Hatchet" and then "The River", and then later on he released three or four more in the series which I have only read one of.
🐻 🌲 Best thing my father taught me is dont have just one occupation but many ! Learn and get hands on as many things you can learn and master so you always have something to fall back on and never get bored ! This saved my tail a few times when some jobs ended and i could easily find another! This spilled over into my hobbies also that keep me going! Cant believe im gonna be 60 this April ! Aloha to you an Cali ❤
NICE TO SEE THE RELAXED SIDE OF YOU WHEN YOU READ. I LIKE MOST OF THE BOOKS YOU HAVE, I ONLY READ MYSTERIES AND SOME DO IT YOURSELF BOOKS. I FORGET THIS BOOK. BUT IT WAS VERY FUNNY SIDE OF CAMPING. THE WEIGHT OF THE EQUIPMENT AND HOW STRONG AND ABLE BODIED YOU'D HAVE TO BE VERSUS MODERN EQUIPMENT THAT IS SMALL AND LIGHT COMPARED. THE MANY ADVENTURES THEY HAD BACK IN THE DAY HAVING TO LUG THAT HEAVY STUFF TO THE CAMPPING GROUNDS. IF I COME ACCROSS IT ,I WILL TELL YOU THE NAME. ONE HILARIOUS BOOK. WELL YOU SEEM TO BE WELL INFORMED AND CUDOS FOR THAT DRINK TO MAKE YOU HEALTHIER. IF IT HAS MUSHROOMS, I'M ALERGIC. THANKS AND STAY SAFE 🙏 ❤🙏🙏❤
Didn't realize you were a trapper also? Have the same manual on my shelf. I have a bunch of these books, but saw some I should look into. Thank you for sharing
Nice, thank you for sharing! I'll keep an eye out for self help books on the shelves. I've read "Man's Search for Meaning" and "Meditiations" this year so far. I feel like I read Meditations wrong, I read it like a regular book but maybe its better to read one or two thoughts a day and think about them a little more? Im not sure lol. I also got an art book for The Group of Seven and Tom Thompson last year just for fun. I stumbled upon their artworks on Pinterest years ago and found your channel right after, cool coinicdence!
I had a laugh when I saw some of your books, I have a lot of the same ones and some on your shelf are on my saved lists at several online book sellers. Great minds think alike as they say.
SHAWN & OUR CALI !!! HEY there thought it was Moose season up there so wasn't thinking of you putting a video out until you were ready to !!! Glad to see you here now !!!
I really like your share in relation to the books you read. And I can find some similarities in relation to that because I have a lot of passions. The outdoors in general, which started with my fishing photography and currently Overlanding I still like to incorporate all those in that Your point I’ve been in the people business all my life that of the restaurant business for 27 years and a technology now 17 years and it does get you I’m sorry if I could I most likely like to go to a place and be secluded to some degree. So thank you for sharing. Always enjoy your videos. Have a moose hunt
Unbelievable! Two Little Savages was the first serious book I read as a youngster. My father bought it for me after I began to poke through his dog eared copy of The Book of Woodcraft, also by Seton. I went on to read all of E. T. Seton’s work. His writing had a huge influence on me and fostered the appreciation and respect I have for nature.
Our food is so lacking and takes a lot to get all those nutrients in one shot ❤ I am looking into that. If you don’t have your health you don’t have anything ❤
I used to read books but with Cataracts I prefer either Kindle or listeing to Audible books while I am creating miniatures and terrain, both in plastic and resin kit format
Excellent collection! I would definitely subscribe to your book club. Love the KJV and True North. Also wrote down a few titles to put on my list I haven’t read. Don’t know if you’ve read A Hunters Heart, but it’s excellent. Thank you for sharing.
"if I had my way I wouldn't have any of it, you would never heard of me", I feel the same, I love nature and the simple life too much to bother with modernity, but I still haven't made it yet
I got Two Little Savages for my grandson, who was probably 7 or 8 at the time. I looked into it and it was entertaining. I didnt give it to my grandson cause I was sure he wouldnt understand any of the jargon.
Thanks for Sharing Shawn, Don't know if ya read this book, but The Gulag Archipelago by Aleksandr Solzhenitsyn is a Great Read to add to your collection. One book stood out on your shelf and a quote from that book you'll recognize....2 + 2 = 4, IF They Allow it. Lol. Thanks Again Shawn
Nice. I have a few of those. Curious what “Turtles all the way Down” is about. I’m surprised you don’t have more field guides. Maybe they are all in a box in your parent’s attic though. Funny this video came out today, I was just thinking about how I’m going to fit my 3000 books currently still in San Francisco into my little cabin in PA this morning.
Shawn, since you’re in Ontario, and some areas speak French, aren’t you the “Jacque of all trades?” Love your content! Take care of Callie… she is your co-star!

Vaccine history. I’m missing a lot of book, probably donated them when we moved last
May I recommend "Finding The Mother Tree"? It is relevant to your forestry/gardening passion.
We have a lot of those books. Saw some titles we'd like to read too.
What are you going to do for water filters? I think that Burkie shut down after law suite.
A company called Boroux is producing filters for several applications, including Burke.
I have several spares
Burkey water filters are reliable!

How about reading on complete nutrition and what all the vitamins, minerals, fats, carbs, proteins etc. Do for you, how they all interact, etc etc etc.
