- Today we bring you the first release from Diageo's MEGA distillery, dubbed the "Scotch Death Star" by some. This first release is 56.5% and a mix of first and refilled bourbon casks and called the "origami kite". Oh and this does happen to be Speyside.

Man that new guy is so good looking and has such a good palate. Bring him on more often🙂
Snagged this duty free at Heathrow, based exclusively on never having heard of the distillery before and yet being a Diageo special release.
Super relieved you guys reviewed it and enjoyed it - appears to be a whisky drinkers Scotch. Cracking it open now…excited to dive in!
Sounds very good. Gotta love that Mega Death Star reference!!
Nice! Been very curious on this one
As were we. I would like to try a peated malt sometime.
the best one of these special releases from 2023 has to be the Clynelish. very good, though super expensive.
that one wasn't in a 20 cl that i saw for purchase sadly. and the price looked bonkers to me.
@@topshelfdustin3060 you're right about the price. I had it for 130€ and loved it but even at that "bargain price", i thought it was too much for a 10yo cask strength scotch.
Interesting...Curious to try that one. Good to see Keith there, btw (hope he's well, and why the "X" on the hand, a secret sign to be allowed in your cupboard, lol ?). I wonder how this compares with a Glenkinchie Cask Strength or a Daftmill CS...Cheers !
Keith gets older, they stay...lol
I haven't had Daftmill yet but this is much more highland type malt than Glenkinchie. As for Keith...he had some claim about being at his kid's sporting event. I've only seen those X's at bars that let in underage people. I think Keith was trying to pretend he was under 21!
hahaha 'underaged Keith" !@@topshelfdustin3060 sounds fun...we miss him anyway...Is it true he's retiring as a youtuber ? Daftmill wise, tbh, I've tried only one expression and one time only (so to be taken with reservations), earlier on this year (2008 Summer Batch Release, WB142069 if you wanna learn everything about it) and it blew me away like no other new distillery (or a notch over some Ardnamurchans), an exceptional batch imho reaching heights (but differently with its own style) of the best Clynelish or Rosebank I ever tried (or maybe rather the beauty of some St Magdalene...in this Daftmill I'm finding a kinda mix of Highlands & Lowlands profiles), way above its age too (11 yo)...Downside of it, the price on secondary market, too high for me, but maybe not for you guys ?...just saying...
I got samples of this year’s talisker, lagavulin, and roseisle. Haven’t opened them yet. Excited to start with the roseisle. Should’ve get the clynelish. But it was already way too expensive. And I doubt talisker and laga be any good
We have reviews on the Talisker and Lagavulin coming
@@topshelfwhisky nice!
Guys, is this whisky non-chill filtered and natural colour?
I believe all the deigeo special releases are.
Oh. Btw, what's a good $ for this bottle in case i see it in stores, so i don't get ripped off
I"m not sure it's out in the US, but all of these are generally north of 100 and this one would be south of 150.
That sounds about right
Bottle looks beautiful so that does make me interested i can't lie😅.
That said i checked scores on whiskybase and they all agree with the notes of pepper something is definitely there. But not all describe it positively.
My question is, is it like pepper taste u might get from a youngish glendronach (assuming u know what i mean, glendronach has a black pepper compliment but there also probably more sherried), which im absolutely addicted to. Or is it like a white pepper taste u may get in a tequila (and im not a big tequila drinker) generally a blanco, which im not a big fan of that tasting note (white pepper). Some on whisky base say white pepper some say black pepper its confusing
Don't do tequila, but to me it's the spice on briskets and gravy.
@@topshelfdustin3060 ah so a lil savory
@@MasterMote maybe some, but it's just more the pepper note from there is here.
I would describe it as a mix of Tasker 10 pepper with Don Julio . Not as vegetal Lagavulin , but just the savory.
All black pepper has some white pepper in it
Pretty shocked by this high score. I don’t think giving bonus points for being only 12 years old or unpeated is warranted. Some truly epic pours got 89 scores from you guys
I definitely rounded up on this one, but more so due to surprise at just how FREAKING good this is. Generally, we're not big on all ex bourbon non peated whiskies, so for one to impress I think you do want to score it above your base level enjoyment if you have a bias against the general theme/style. And then throw in a bit of bonus for the shock value/cool factor of it being a first major release from this distillery.
Terrible pronunciation, it’s pronounced like ‘Rose 🌹, isle(aisle)’
Mericans...I honestly am not sure I could say it based on that either.
I gave Dustin one job. Tell me how it’s pronounced! Next time.
Thank you
Haha I expected it to be Rose-aisle too but enjoyed Dustin’s creative pronunciation nonetheless
