Fun fact: In your Pixel 7 Pro teardown, you saw a blue O-Ring for the USB C port and said "Google should make their whole phone this colour next time around". Fast forward a year, and here you are, durability testing a pixel in that exact blue colour you mentioned before.
I've got the pixel8, went from the 7a because of a broken screen. Form factor is better, better battery, smoother display (might not notice it though), recommending without a doubt if coming from anything other than the pixel 7.
I'll suggest you to save some extra bucks and go for the pro version cuz u will get a lot more features like the cloud processing n all that techy stuff that google showed in there showcase

Just a heads up, the thermometer does work on humans, but Google needs to get FDA clearance as usage as a potential diagnostic device could turn the unit into a medical device. As I understand, they're going through the clearance process right now, so hopefully we'll have an update on a couple months with a setting for people

They've been dealing with FDA-cleared devices for a long while. And Apple's smartwatches have that clearance, too. There was a big fuss in tech media about their ECG functionality a few years ago when it first came out and the FDA asked Apple to disable it until it passes their certification tests.

I actually switched to a pixel 7 pro partly due to it kind of surviving your test. I would have bet that the 8 pro would have had the same issues... I'm happily surprised! I won't be upgrading anytime soon but it's good to know that Google is improving. Even if it is slowly.
It would be cool to see the regular Pixel 8 durability test as thats probably what most people would get and to see if it has the same build quality as the larger one

Palm Pre was actually the first one with magnetic lock for wireless charging. They had super cool other functions a well as i.e. activating speakers when you are called on the wireless charging phone. They were ahead quite a bit, back in the day.
I'm picking up my Pixel 8 today, so it would be great to see how it survives your tests. My main concern with phones is the screen shattering when it's dropped, so I'd love to see some impact tests!

I remember throwing a Nokia 3210 as far as I could into the bush in the middle of a break up convo. I then realised I was using my mates phone not mine. So I instantly had to go walk into the thick Aussie bush which was fairly overgrown at this time of year, found it in bits, clipped it back together and it was literally fine. This is an extreme and I got lucky. But regular use and dropping your phone in normal situations wasn't even a thought. I'd drop mine daily lol
I have both fond and painful memories of the Nexus 6P. Was a very nice phone and I loved the dual front-firing speakers, but then I got the fun battery issues where the phone would just shut down at 30% for no reason. Cheers for the callback. Hoping my Pixel 8 Pro is up to the task once I get it.
Still have my 6p :) , i keep it as a memento , it is still in pristine condition ( i hide it from Zac :) ) apart from having a deceased battery , it will fire up however if i plug it into the charger , the 6p actually did not take a bad happy snap , and had the most perfect finger print placement of any phone i have ever used to this day , RIP 6p ! .
I've had a Pixel 7A for about a month and a half now, and this thing has survived multiple concrete drops with just some very small scratches to the back cover. I legit feel like I got a case for nothing. Truly amazing
I've had a Pixel 6A for about a year now, with no case, and I dropped it multiple times, just some scratches in the corners but no major damage at all. Most durable phone I ever had, and I had quite some... :)

You should also do small drop tests. Instead of unreasonable 2m drop tests which will destroy most phones, multiple drops from 30cm or 50cm would be nice, just to see if it can survive a small oopsie, it felt from my bed when I threw it (you know what I mean). During 7 years, this would definitely happen (obviously not as often as burning the screen with a flame torch, keep doing this useful test !)

Ah finally get to see the Ghost case I ordered. DBrand's stock photos make the black rubber that wraps around the diameter look enormous. This looks pretty good. Looking forward to it. As much as I like the Blue color, I can't wait to cover it with a case.
Interesting. I'm watching this video from my 5 years old Pixel 3XL. I am the third owner and besides a small fracture in one corner of the back panel, everything works just fine. Surely they've worked the equipment survivability after 5 generations.
Will the device physically last 7 years?.. Google's build quality of their devices would say an emphatic NO. It is all a ruse to justify the price hiking. It is a very clever ruse though.

This was my biggest concern with their 7 year offer. I refuse to believe it will even make it half that time without unusable issues arising. Should be 7 years of warranty if theyre really about that life.
Google is legally required to do it, because they said it and it is apart of its marketing. I have a 5 year old 9+ from samsung. I'm pretty sure this Pixel will survive even longer than my galaxy has.

Ya know, i really hope Google mantains this promisse of 7 years of support (and hope other brands go further aswell), but i have the slight concern that the Pixel 8 is not going to be good enough to run Android properly in 2030.
I'd say quite the opposite, improvements to CPUs, GPUs and SOCs over the last decade has rapidly slowed. It's now boiling down to software for "evolution" and that's only getting more and more optimised with newer versions of android. This is probably why Google thinks it is a good time to offer 7 year support to catch up with other brands that have been offering it for a while.

Will the device physically last 7 years?.. Google's build quality of their devices would say an emphatic NO. It is all a ruse to justify the price hiking. It is a very clever ruse though.
Almost nobody keeps their phones for 7years these days even old people.

As likely as finding a Canadian coin in your change in Florida is more like it. Technically possible, but effectively never.

This was my biggest concern with their 7 year offer. I refuse to believe it will even make it half that time without unusable issues arising. Should be 7 years of warranty if theyre really about that life.
Google is legally required to do it, because they said it and it is apart of its marketing. I have a 5 year old 9+ from samsung. I'm pretty sure this Pixel will survive even longer than my galaxy has.

Ya know, i really hope Google mantains this promisse of 7 years of support (and hope other brands go further aswell), but i have the slight concern that the Pixel 8 is not going to be good enough to run Android properly in 2030.
I'd say quite the opposite, improvements to CPUs, GPUs and SOCs over the last decade has rapidly slowed.
It's now boiling down to software for "evolution" and that's only getting more and more optimised with newer versions of android.
This is probably why Google thinks it is a good time to offer 7 year support to catch up with other brands that have been offering it for a while.
