I’m Japanese and definitely we eat rice every day but in a small portion. I think in America, the portion is too big. One salad for Americans are for family of four. The balance is the key to your health as well as walking. This is one of the best seminar. Thank you.

@@seyyedhosseini1998 He is selling healthful habits. High carb = starch = the food that was 90% of the human diet all over the world for centuries where they did NOT get obese or heart disease, etc. (unless they were "elites" like kings and had high-fat diets with lots of animal foods). I did not believe it at first either. I was so brainwashed by this society's media and education that I thought high carbs (starches) were the worst. I didn't realize my mistake until my late sixties, but just in time to save my life.

@@MadlyinLovewithJesus-1953 I should correct my comment, by high carb clearly I meant procssed high carb. But things have changed since you were at my age(28) now even the bread we consume is highly procssed. If by high carb diet you mean those that you get from vegetables, there is no issue there. But he clearly doesn't talk about high carb in todays Context. So when a poor guy hear his advice. He things that Tim Tam or Mars bar is good for him because in the label it Says around 60g carb in each 100g.

@@seyyedhosseini1998 Anyone who listens to him long enough will be clear he is not talking about refined carbs (as in candy bars), but I think you have a good point that he really doesn't seem to expound very much about the good carbs (i.e., foods known also as starch, such as potatoes, corn and rice). Dr. John McDougall is probably the best doc to listen to regarding the starches, known more recently as carbohydrates (and often confused with sugar therefore).

Today, March 2, 2018, I am celebrating my first year anniversary as a vegan. One year ago I was 235 pounds with a bmi of 37 (obese). I had diabettes and high blood pressure for which I was taking drugs. On the last day in February 2017 I watched Forks over Knives, a documentary on how our food is produced and how harmful it is. The next day I went to an all-you-can-eat restaurant (golden coral) and ate every vegetable or whole food I saw. During the next 60 days I lost 33 pounds, stopped all medications as my blood glucose was normal as was my blood presssure .I had stopped eating all animal products - beef, chicken, eggs, diary, fish, butter etc.etc. I did stop losing weight but saw in retrospect that I was still eating processed (packaged) foods which I cut out and lost another 22 pounds in the following two months. I had gone from 235 to 170 - a whopping 65 pounds. It had been a decade or longer since I was below 200 pounds. I am 77 years of age.
As I live alone in the Oregon outback in an off-grid home I built myself I used videos like this as my support group. There are at least a dozen doctors posting videos that recommend a plant based "diet" and cutting out processed foods because they are loaded with addictive substances like salt, sugar and oils. At every meal I would go to youtube and select another of these videos as my support group. (Google plant based doctors - Neal Barnard, John, McDougall, Michael Gregor, Michael Klaper, Joel Fuhrman, Dean Ornish, Kim Williams, T. Colin Campbell, Caldwel Esselstyn, Alan Goldhammer, Doug Lisle, Matt Kedernan, Alona Pulde, Thomas Campbell, Garth Davis, Pam Popper, and so many more.
Today, I have actually modified my eating habit by including a two day water only fast once every week which gives my body a chance to heal itself. What the Doctor of all doctors wrote: "Let food be thy medicine" is so true (Thanks Dr Hippocrates.) Another important message can be found at abolishchildsexabuse.com Thanks for reading.

Malnourish diet? Name the essential nutrient we cannot get from plants?
      Let me guess... b12.
So your saying that we should consume animal products ( that are not even a good source of b12 unless fortified like milk) to get b12..
What about the data demonstrating a direct linear relationship between LDL levels and plaque developement in the arteries ( atherosclerosis )
Also i would like to point out thqt the only qnimals that we can cause atherosclerosis in is herbivores and the only proven way to do this ( can replicate it infinite amount of times ) is to feed them diets high in dietary cholesterol OR saturated fat but HEERRRDURRR WE ARE CARNIVORES, HERRDURRRR.
Let me guess, your going to dismiss the link between LDL levels and plaque developed or clearing..
I hope you have some clinnical intervention studies to demonstrate why you can dismiss this science.
And im just talking qbout atherosclerosis, what aboug all the other mechanisms that get activated when you consume those foods? Dismiss that data too?

@@ericmay7722 This vitamin comes from bacteria that live in our mouth and intestines. (See The Vitamin B12 Issue by Dr. Gina Shaw; Vegan Vitamin B12 Deficiency is a Myth by Cindy Jones-Shoeman; and Vitamin B12 Deficiency-the Meat-Eaters’ Last Stand by Dr. John McDougall, M.D.) These bacteria also exist in the soil. So you can let your body produce it naturally, which is what we all do, or eat some UNWASHED, ORGANIC vegetables once in a while. The American Journal of Clinical Nutrition reports that 39% of Americans have low levels of B12. If only 1% of Americans are vegan, how can a B12 deficiency be a vegan issue? After 16 years of practicing veganism without taking a single vitamin, I had my B12 level checked on October 24, 2012. It was 543 pg/mL. The normal range is between 271-870 pg/mL. My level is perfect because the human body needs just three micrograms of B12 per day.

Even as an amateur endurance athlete, I became so fascinated by my rapid weight loss when I changed my diet, that i AVOIDED working out to see what would happen. Nothing happened but the weight kept falling off. It's the INPUT side--just as Dr. Barnard tells us here.
But one should exercise for overall health -and- mental benefits! It's just not absolutely necessary for weight loss. Eating mostly low density/high nutrition foods IS.

Kaiser Permanente in Lancaster, CA began a study for Plant-Based diets and benefits which standard medical procedures could do nothing about such as the problem of losing circulation of blood to the feet and the subsequent gangrene of the feet, where the feet turn black. My doctor, Dr. Lawenda began working with the Podiatrist who has scheduled the patient for a double foot amputation. He asked the patient if they would be willing to go on a monitored Whole Food Plant-Based diet in order to restore the circulation to his feet and avoid the double amputation. The patient said “YES!!” His feet pinked back up and the amputations were not required. His diabetic count returned to normal and his diabetic meds were tapered off. The man still has both feet and he is Plant-Based for life.
Dr. Lawenda runs a Starch-Based Program based on the success of Dr. John McDougall for Kaiser patients in Los Angeles County. We had already gone Plant-Based and his lecture included much of Dr. McDougall’s research, but my husband had not heard it before. Sadly, Dr. Lawenda had not been able to help his own father who was in the same condition, whose feet were amputated. Dr. Lawenda went on Plant-Based and himself lost weight and he was great at being able to tweak my diet so I could break the stall I was having in weight loss.
We have moved to Visalia, CA and no longer have Kaiser but continue eating Plant-Based. My husband is a cancer survivor. When I went Plant-Based and was losing weight, he would not even try the food. He would not see that his diet was anything but healthy and then we discovered he had Prostate Cancer and it was already Stage 4. He had the surgery but I reasoned with him that though Robotic Surgery (which he had) was excellent and the cancer was removed but the nerves preserved, that it is possible that cancer could reoccur if he continued to eat as he was, the Standard American Diet which actually promotes cancer.
He agreed to eat whatever I cooked and enjoyed it. He lost weight without hunger also. And he’s had no tests since then showing a positive cancer test since then. Now the surgery was hard on him and he was at retirement age and so he retired. There were other men who he worked with who also had Prostate Cancer, three to be precise, but they all went on chemo and radiation. Six months on after beginning treatment, all three of them were dead.
Great motivator to not return to the Standard American Diet.
Now with me, my mother and sister both died of Breast Cancer. I have avoided it entirely. I went from Pre-Diabetes to an A1C of 5.1, which is normal. My cholesterol came down also.
I don’t seem to be aging as I was, and I look well. And feel well.
My husband does eat fish on occasion. The only thing I eat rarely is a couple of eggs, so no more than 4 in a whole year. And I do not feel tempted, no deprived. Our food is delicious. I’ve managed to come up with vegan versions of most of the meals we have enjoyed throughout our marriage of 46 years.
Yes, our kids seem to think we are weird but they cannot deny that we are the active healthy parents that they could have only hoped for before.
Plant-Based for LIfe! Need a bumper sticker!!!

I have shared this and shared this and I'll continue to do so. I have the utmost respect for Dr. Barnard. I've listened to him speak many times (thanks UA-cam and those who record him). I've listened to him debate the benefits of plant-based living partnered with Gene Baur (Farm Sanctuary). Superb debate, excellent moderator. The con side was a young meat industry expert and an some organization leader who owns & operates a family organic "happy animal" farm.
Gene & Neil had me standing, clapping, and giving praise alone in my living room!! :) And the moderator did not let the con side take it personal. Omnis don't like when you point out their flawed way of thinking.
I know people & have family with health issues proven to be erased by a plant-based diet. Type-2, cholesterol, early-dementia, and Alzheimer's. I vow to keep Dr. Barnard in the face of those I know and love. THEY could use a boost of life in their unhealthy bodies.
Thanks again for sharing this informative presentation. And with Q&A at the end!

Sleep management is such a helpful adjunct to good nutrition and exercise! It boosts mood, speeds recuperation, "knits up the raveled sleeve of care." The sleep you desire is the sleep your body and mind needs. I lecture on dreams and problem solving and try never to forget to give people permission and motivation to get enough sleep.

Good story Jimmy. I'm reading Dr. Jason Fung's theories again today. And he has a slightly different set of conclusions. He has many videos on UA-cam and writings on the web, but I can't vouch for the validity of what he says, only that what he is saying is somewhat apart and yet between what Low-Carb and whole food advocates believe. Fung claims that Type 2 diabetes is a disease of insulin resistance because there is too much insulin in the blood. And that the goal treatment needs to be lowering the amount of insulin in the blood, rather than only trying to lower glucose levels. He has theorized that cells are already full of glucose, don't want more, and therefore are resistant to the effects of insulin. The solutions he proposes for Type 2 diabetics then, is to reduce the amount of insulin that their bodies are producing. And this can be done in a couple of ways --
      1) by not eating the modern diet which is heavy on highly processed foods -- foods that are high in carbs and refined vegetable oils. He argues that the processed foods are removed from their natural fibers and fats, and that by eating natural foods, you can lower the flood of glucose that is happening to so many people. So, I think both low-carb and vegetarians can agree on that point -- processed, sugary foods are a major contributor. But while Fung thinks low-carb or keto diets are a fine way to eat, they are not the only way. He says eating foods with the original fiber is certainly going to be better than drinking fruit juice, or starchy products that have had the fiber and fat removed so they can sit on shelves for long periods without spoiling.
      2) Fung claims that eating less often will put a Type 2 diabetic person into a fasting state. And by fasting for longer periods each day, it both lowers insulin levels and increases insulin sensitivity. By fasting, he is not necessarily saying don't eat for a whole day or two. Fung says people shouldn't eat 6 times a day, like has been said in media for a couple of decades now, that people were better of eating 3 times a day. And that going 12 or 14 hours of not eating each day is a healthy fasting state, doesn't cost anything, and significantly improves diabetic insulin resistance which would lower glucose levels, and allegedly, reverse the Type 2 diabetic condition.
      What do you two think?

That's not what I've seen of people who are vegan. Veganism typically results in lessened body integrity, depending on the details of what 'vegan foods' they're eating. I find starches not so healthy for me, generally. Vegetable/seed oils also. So, if one is only eating fruits and vegetables,… that typically doesn't work out well either. But, as long the starches consumed are minimal or infrequent, and of particular well suited types for ones body, then they're ok,… along with fresh fruits(rarely dried), greens, other vegetables(non-starchy),.. and then animal flesh, eggs, cheese, raw milk, kefir, yogurt, beer,…… all that prudently consumed keeps my young and fresh at age 50,…. veganism leads to quicker aging,… although over - consumption of any 'diet' will lead to quicker aging. The main thing with veganism is that it's not adequately balanced for human body integrity,… good solid integrity. Diet is a balance,…. to keep prime with. I consume for body integrity and performance,… and it's 'prudent omnivorism',… and it keeps me young. Veganism brings about more wrinkles sooner, because the body doesn't get enough of what it needs to keep well-toned and suitably 'filled'. Btw, I'm 6'4" x 180. I'm slender,… and I've always been that way,… and I've been very keen on the whole diet-health-disease matter since 1984(age 16),… and even interest earlier. Keep well oxygenated,… quality animal flesh and greens are great staples of the diet,… along with the other fundamental foods,… particularly fruits,… and for many populations throughout history, from Europe, Asia, and Africa,… dairy products. MMMMmmmm, they're good for me, if they're quality,… and not homogenized.
