I know, what makes it more odd is that I haven't searched anything about mankato In UA-cam. I don't even have social media anymore so unless UA-cam has access to location Im stumped.
I went to MSU from 83 to 88. I know that's five years. Most people go for only four years. I was so good, they kept me for an extra year. At 1:40 one sees Mr. Steak. I used to work there. I was a dishwasher there.
Wow! What a time machine! The last time I was in Mankato, MN was around 1987 when I was employed by the Chicago & North Western Railroad (now Union Pacific). Love the views of the Mr. Steak restaurant, Spur gas station and yeah, that waterbed store. Bet they're all gone now. Like seeing the period cars too. Today, they'd all qualify for vintage or antique car license plates in most states though I'm sure all have since long ago rusted away due to the frigid, lengthy, pothole infested, Minnesota winters. Thanks for sharing!
I remember those days. Riverfront didn't connect like it does today and we still had Madsens and the old Country Drug store. and 2 7-11's. . Miss those days.

Thanks for this, brings back memories. Amazing how things have changed over the years, especially Madison East. Take away hooligans and a couple other stores, and the rest of it is basically a medical clinic.
I grew up near here and drove down these streets in the 1980s. It was super trippy because I moved away - so my memory of this area is frozen in this timeframe.
Raised in West Mankato (in my 40s now), so this was awesome to see once past the 169 underpass. Can barely make out the 7-11 that I used to frequent as a kid to play Mario Bros and Kung Fu arcade games. Earl's Grocery was a favorite to go. Video Show Kase--that storefront brings back memories. For those older or more knowledgeable: what is the building between Park Lane liquor and the Malt Shoppe? That I don't recall from my very younger years; I just recall the parking lot that became of that building.
It's amazing how many buildings are gone. Some of them, I had to back the tape to see it again. Then I wen Oh yeah. Some have been gone so long that I had forgot that they were there.
OMG --- Back when Highway 22 (now known as Victory Drive) went _west_ of McDonald's. Madison East Mall, Long John Silvers, Mr Steak, Twin Valley Council BSA office (about 1/2 way down the Madison Ave hill - I know not many will know what the hell that is, but my parents had to go there a lot so I went there a lot in the 70's and 80's). I grew up in Mankato and graduated in 1979. Get back there every now and then but this is essentially the Mankato I grew up in and remember. Edit: OMG2 - I think that's my old church to the left at 7:14. Centenary United Methodist at 2nd and Cherry. Edit2 OMG3: Driving along Front Street at 9:00 (now known as Riverfront Drive), the sign says "Madsen's Valu Center" but for some reason I remember it as "Madsen's Super Valu". Maybe that's how it was known in the 60's and 70's Edit3: I remember having to drive under the train bridge (at 10:40) to get to Sibley Park but I don't remember the park looking that nice. But most of my trips there were in the 1970's to go sledding on Sibley Hill so maybe it was improved since then.
Went to votec school in 82 and 3 there. Auto body 82 and mechanics in 83. Early 80s and on were really sht yrs for autos. They were mostly square tin can crap piles and will never be desired. But when you watch old cruise around videos in the 50s 60s and 70s , you want to dive in the time zone of the area with all your money and start buying the old classics that are parked and being driven in those periods. Like when you watch old twighlight zone movies. It’s actually sad because so many with nice rust free bodies were just scrapped for 30 dollars. Those days are gone forever and so is most of the people that drove them. It would have been cool if you could of did some car dealership shots with video camera. No 1 thing that dates the era is the yr of vehicles being driven.
And also why were so many cars turning at Riverfront and Main going to the river? was their something over their at that time? I drive riverfront everyday and have not seen that many cars turn their in all my years of driving it lol
@@dustinwilliams251 Embers was still there, so this had to of been when the bridge still went from Main Street to Belgrade before Veterans Memorial Bridge was built
You know they were cruising for girls that’s what we did back then . Wave and honk at them and then never see them again.l.o.l those were the days before internet and smart phones over ran society. Oh well I can say this for my own life anyway I wouldn’t want to do it over again. I feel for the future of young people they seem to like Big Government and they degrade God and constitution and now may lose it.
It's weird how Madison Avenue is almost unrecognizable, but then they turn onto Riverfront into Old Town and it could have been filmed this morning
Yep, the only thing on Madison Ave I recognized was Long John Silvers, and Mitas.
I live in Fairmont, and was really surprised to see this in my recommendations... my how times have changed.
"I need to get back to the year 1985"...

it'd be so cool if someone did a side-by-side recreation of this!

@@AdrianSmith74 Thank you for your update on businesses in Mankato.
Me waterbed is a music store. Rapsody music. Mr steak is now swiss and Madison, was Charley's prior to that.

It’s strange how similar but also so different it looks from now.
Hey! Looks different now in 2018. Funny how many things changed but a lot stayed the same.

Funny how this is from 9/11, way before the manufacturing consent of fear existed....
Is this Mankato Minnesota?
Yes
