Early 2000’s - 2013 was the romantic period for Tornado chasing, it’s before people realized how fast they could kill b/c of the twistex team but was also the time of portable cameras that could stream a somewhat good resolution. And the cameras and the way they are and feel are just different.
this video really puts in perspective how dangerous they are, i've driven on those roads outside of kato countless times to see the magnitude of how big they are is crazy, but have never seen a tornado in RL. I don't recall in my lifetime a tornado actually directly hitting mankato... it would not a be a pretty site, hopefully it will never happen.
Great video Ben. This was the storm event that was the real catalyst for my love of severe weather. My ex-meteorologist dad and I were at the Medford outlets that afternoon and ended up being on the tornado warning in Steele county. Although it didn't produce it was a crazy afternoon. I was 6 years old and still remember it vividly.
Was in college at MNSU Mankato at the time. The temp was super humid and hot then went to very cool, basically 95 to 65 degrees and we all knew something wasn't right.
Anyone els here in 2021 because of UA-cam recommendations? Also I remember hiding in the basement thinking I was going to die. I lived in Mankato at the time
Wow, so amazing to finally see video of this tornado. I was living in south St. Peter when it happened, but was driving home from the metro area at the time. When I got back to my apartment, other tenants were outside and saying they'd just watched this tornado pass less than 1/2 mile south of the building about ten minutes earlier. And I surely do remember all of the trees down along Hwy 169 just south of town for years afterwards. But this is the first time I've actually seen footage of that tornado. Man, it really was a bad one ... I'm just glad it (barely) missed my house.
I live near where that tornado hit. Within 5 miles. But I was in Michigan watching the warning on TWC. And was SO PISSED haha. To this day (2021) you can still see damaged trees in the area.
And right at the end where they get out to check that house... I know exactly where that is. That same house was hit by a giant 2200 yard wide F3 in MARCH 1998. That's bad luck.
Talk about just an absolutely volatile atmosphere. What a rediculous amount of multiple suction vortices when you guys were backing up! I know you'd probably say "anybody would do it", but still, I'm proud of you guys abandoning the chase to check on the house that just took the direct hit! Nice job guys!!!!
Patti Brooks Believe me..they are scary. My husband and I used to try to chase tornadoes. One day in May 98’ one hit my neighborhood, and damaged my home and many others. We got into the basement just in time. All we could hear was wind, trees falling, shingles, nails and hail hitting our house. The noise of that was unreal. To me it sounded like if you put a bunch of nails, wood, coins and hard boots into your dryer on the highest speed. It got quiet for a second, so I ran back upstairs to look out the window. I thought I’d see our roof gone. The wind hit again and debris went everywhere. I went back into the basement just shaking. Needless to say..I take storms & tornadoes much more seriously now and don’t try to chase them. In Mn, they’ll eventually come to you.
The storms come down the MN river valley and then hit Swan Lake, which is a massive lake, slew, swamp just west of Nicollet . It’s the biggest body of water south of mil lacs. The huge tornado in ‘98 started west of Swan then exploded when it hit Swan and kept going to pretty much level St. Peter.
Awesome tornado you got in this video. You were close too. I've been on a few myself, but I still haven't seen one of these wedges upclose yet. Saw one way off in the distance near Henessey Oklahoma, but I never got that one on video, because the rain wrapped it as I was stopping to get a video of it.
There were Sirens Screaming in Owatonna and Shakopee, which are each 45 Minutes Away from Mankato. I was listening to Owatonna's 2001's and Modulator's scream that day for 10 Minutes
issyb2009-The storm that tore through St Peter was 8 years before this one. That one (the St Peter storm) was on March 29, 1998 and was a rare early season tornado for MN
I go to Mankato State and a tornado just rolled through here! It was super weak, like an F0 or something, so it wasn't very frightening. :) It was my first tornado though, so it was rather exciting
great chase, guys. this tornado was the first only tornado i've ever seen on my small number of chases (i'm a trained spotter). i 'caught' it on hwy 99 about 3-4 miles s.w. of st. peter after it hopscotched the town of nicollet, where i was living at the time. it crossed the farmland and in my direction, so i had to retreat to st. peter. i stood in awe of it as it roared just south of my position in s. st. peter. dead trees still stand 1 mile s. of st. peter next to the river as a reminder.
I remember this storm. My family and I drove through Mankato a few weeks later and just North along HWY 169 there were a bunch of trees that used to be cool to watch the sunlight shine through the leaves as you drove by that this storm turned to nothing but sticks sticking out of the ground and in some places looked like the hand of God himself smashed down others and you could see the rotation pattern a bit. Was so surreal to see.
That storm on 5/2/12 was exciting. Got stuck on highway 14. Nice hail damage >.> Couldn't see 10ft in front of me. Video going around "tornado in mankato" someone took a video of the wallcloud.
Ok, so there are several things I am compelled to mention & point out: -for 2006, this is great video -both were calm throughout the Chase -good decisions were made and both communicated well -fantastic informative narration throughout the Chase, which may seem like a no-brainer but is often incredibly difficult to do while chasing -THERE WAS NO YELLING superlatives, pointing out the obvious like "VIOLENT TORNADO!!!! Big tornado!!! OMG!!! OMFG!!! Etc... -overall, a great video for 11 years ago, informative, no yelling, stayed calm, and of course, you actually shot the tornado. Cheers
He did repeatedly say..."violent tornado" a bit too much. And he does come off as a bit controlling, in a polite/professional manner though. Nice tornado though, and yes, a lot better than Reed Timmer "the screamer."

One true thing about us Minnesotans, there's a tornado? We'll stay out and watch.
Anyone els here in 2021 because of UA-cam recommendations?
Also I remember hiding in the basement thinking I was going to die. I lived in Mankato at the time
yeah, i was only two at the time living in kato, i wish i was older to remember it.
great footage for 2006
That tornado had some of the most wicked churning effect I've seen in a tornado vid. Very nice catch!
I found out this was an EF3. It looked more violent than that. Very good catch!
Wow, so amazing to finally see video of this tornado. I was living in south St. Peter when it happened, but was driving home from the metro area at the time. Never been in a tornado or a hurricane but they must be scary!

That's a unique one multi vortex
Great video. Thanks so much for the explanations.
Storms always seem to hit the Mankato area, or most of the Tornado producing storms happen in the Albert Lea - Mankato area
I live in Mankato I have been 50 miles away from tornados and we still went to the basement
Savage Vlogs that's a safe thing to do. A tornado hit neardy a couple days ago

NFLD_Raider like in summer in Mankato a tornado happens I was scared out of my Hart

That was the worst worst day ever! Pluto the 9th Planet got demoted on that day too!

Exactly one decade to the day that my town was hit by a strong, damaging tornado. Wow
