Do any commenters here really know anything about Gorbachev, other than what they've heard from American media outlets?
Nah they all see him as a hero, despite his acts of trechary to the soviet people and terrible corrupt leadership causing the soviet union go collaps
@@Georgeisagenius Educate me. What were some of his acts of treachery? Didn't he just happen to be in power at a time when the USSR finally collapsed?
He did a few good things, and they love him. he was just another killing monster
@@jerryklooster438 It was his fault the USSR collaped. The USSR hadnt had a famine since 1947, and in only 63 years the USSR had gone from a third world surfdom aristocracy to a communist super power that was able to rival others who had been developing for hundereds if not thousands of years. When Gorbachev was elected in 1985 the ussr took a massive hit through him selling out his country to the west for a few small payouts. During his rule GDP dropped by 40%, real wages halfed, poverty shot up from 22 million in 1987 to 66 million in 1988, allowed half a million women to be sold into sex slavery, and sold his whole nation for a few payouts in the west. If you just look at the facts then you can see what a terrible person he was. After Gorbachev left Boris Yeltsin was in power, and then things only got worse. We can see that from the literal food shortages russias having at the moment. Theres a reason over 80% of Russians regreted dissolving the Soviet Union. If you just look at the facts you can understand how Gorbachev ruined the Soviet Union
@@Georgeisagenius they lost about everything overnight due to politics and all your success is just gone overnight is depressing. That’s why a lot of Russians:Soviets hated Gorbachev as a leader. He dissolved everything these people worked for.

The Berlin Wall separated the Western controlled section of Berlin from East Germany. Berlin was in Eastern Germany. Get your history straight.
Gorbachev is probably the most hated person in Russia for good reason, but you can always rely on Westerners to be arrogant enough to think they know better.
Exactly
Russia sees him as a scapegoat for the dissolution of the Union, which was inevitable. Blaming Gorbachev for everything IS arrogant. The Soviet Union’s economy was already incredibly stagnant under Brezhnev. They were spending a lot of their GDP on the military, which they could not afford. Also, the desire for sovereignty in Eastern European countries (especially after Chernobyl, which was under the administration of Bryukhanov) contributed to the dissolution. What was Gorbachev supposed to do? Attack East Germany and Eastern Europe?
@@thenablade858 gorbachev did weaken the central authority so much that other corrupt guys like Yeltsin did whatever they wanted
He did not "end" the cold war... his country failed.. there is a difference

Should be noted that Gorbachev employed brutal measures to try to quell uprisings in other communist nations (tho of course he was in a difficult position). A great friend to Berlin, but a mixed record otherwise.

He had a great vision but, he tried to change their economy overnight. Their economy was too fkedup to be changed😢😢
RIP Mikail Gorbachev
His economic policies led to the collapse of the USSR, which resulted in an explosion of suicide, drug addiction/overdose, poverty, malnutrition, unemployment, homelessness and a disgustingly high rate of prostitution, particularly among children.
Think what you will of the USSR, but life was objectively better before his rule. There is a reason why he is the most disliked leader in Russia (along with Yeltsin), while in the U.S. those leaders are the most liked.
Further information about the dissolution of the USSR and Russia's transition towards capitalism, among many other countries, can be found in Naomi Klein's "The Shock Doctrine".
True, but the next step will be even worse for ru.

The concept of an “iron curtain” was not their construction but our own and it was a propaganda technique to give it a name so we could blame it on the Soviets. They wanted collaboration but we would not allow as they had to collaborate only on our terms. Sounds familiar? Gorbachev was awful. He ruined Soviet Union and the wonderful Russians would be astronomically more socially, culturally and industrially developed now if they had not taken the western neoliberal path. It is only being discovered now that USSR began being dismantled far earlier than popularly cited - it was gradually from the 1970s and owing to rampant British and US interference. The rate at which Russia developed (health care, science, culture, quality of life, you name it - it improved incredibly from the initial conditions) from 1920 to 1960 was astronomical and this would have continued without the western bribes and incessant political interference, climaxing with Gorbachev completely ruining the entire state. As this involved enormous property being passed to our elites and oligarchs, and creating oligarchs there merely as a byproduct, we cheer the devastation he brought, but having family in Russia I can attest that most Russians have the opposite view than our brainwashed traded stocks and private rental property obsessed narrative.
straight from moscow
The Soviet Union developed greatly due to industrialization and funding for scientific and medical research, especially in regards to space travel, but the economic stagnation which occurred primarily under Brezhnev was not the result of British and American interference. Russia simply wasn’t productive enough to justify the percentage of their GDP they were allocating to military funds. It was unable to maintain hegemony or control over the multiple territories that wished for independent sovereignty.
