Thanks for sharing. I have 9 boxes which have raised 2 clutches a year for awhile. Since putting them up I have noticed a pair of Hawks and Owls have moved in. Fun watching these guys.
We used Logitech cameras. The wood duck in box 1 is sitting on the eggs already. We're probably 25 days to another hatch. We put up another box this past week. Charles is the mastermind behind the cameras and boxes. I'll get him to post more info. Box 1 was a modified store bought box. The roof is a thick clear plastic with white nylon to diffuse the light and keep the box from getting too hot. Box 2 was custom built. The cables run through the backyard up to the house.
Just watched this with my girlfriend, that is pretty awesome. Thank you for that. Also gave us an extra laugh watching our cats flip out over the sounds.
I'm here cause i just heard this french dude on Quebec radio talk about this Duck species. Apparently there's 6 species in Quebec that nest's in trees 15' - 35' high up. The nest could be 100 meters to a lake to 1 km away. The ducklings are usually around a dozen, lol, born with eyes wide open and ready to eat, omg. The mom goes to ground waiting for them to jump down, no after thoughts they dive down, how incredible they survive the plunge no problem. Then like like the beast the jungle is, the predators awaits them during the march to the river or lake (that's the part i hate)
That is a great video! Thanks for sharing. We just had a clutch of 11 hatch and there is another sitting in our other box. I would love to modify and put in cameras for next year. Please send details. Thanks.
Sean: The camera we used for this one isn't one they make anymore. But we used a C920 in the new box. www.logitech.com/en-us/product/hd-pro-webcam-c920?crid=34. We only have two boxes. That works the same, just a different model.
We get multiple wood ducks. We have two boxes now and there has been two hatches in one year in the same box before. We're fortunate to live on a lake that has a large population of wood ducks. Unfortunately, it's still frozen and we just got 12 inches of snow. So it'll be a bit before they start laying eggs this year.
Holly Jo Anderson Thank you for the additional info... you are indeed fortunate. My pond is still 80% iced over... we put up the duck box two days ago and it's occupied this morning. It's definitely a feel good sort of thing, to provide artificial cavities for the ducks... two a year, wow!
This is awesome Ms. Anderson. Can you please share the exact details of the Logitech camera? I have 8 boxes out and about and would love to modify one on the pond the pond by my house. Thanks!
Holly, what camera did you install in the box? I have looking on Amazon for the past two weeks trying to decide which camera to buy and they all have issues with quality and wifi connectivity issues. Your response would be greatly appreciated.
Holly Jo -- an even more awesome way to end it would be this; all but three of the ducks jump out. Then, get a shot from the front of the box to show what's going on in the outside. Show the last three jumping out.
Ben Fiddler Ben:We do not have them set up for wireless. The cameras are wired with USB3 this year. The USB3 is working significantly better than previous cabling. The cables don't run 100 feet into the house. We just bring a computer down to the gazebo to pug it in. On jump day, there's typically 2 computers and an external hard drive recording the entire time. There are two because each box has two cameras to get the different angles. We have ducks in both boxes currently.
Hi Holly Jo, Do you have any windows cut into the bird box or is there enough light coming through the door that you don't need an infrared sensor on the camera to get those shots?
It's no mean feat to get the lighting right on this kind of shot--to keep the outside light from making the inside of the box too dark for us to see or else the dark inside makes the outside blown out to white. Beautiful videography. I'm a wildlife videographer too, and I'm about to make a short documentary about Wood Ducks. I have gorgeous closeup footage of both sexes and of one pair copulating. What I don't have is footage of the ducklings leaving the nest. Would you be interested in letting me use some of this video? If you’ll check my UA-cam channel (tinyurl.com/ycoqvdw5), you’ll see that I do good work. And I would, of course, credit you. With fingers crossed, Jo Alwood.

Truly those ducklings took a leap of faith with no help from their mother. Awesome! Thanx!
I think I just died and went to heaven!!! I've NEVER seen anything so amazingly cute!!!
That is so beautiful to watch! Thank you for sharing. Living in the Netherlands, I never even knew about these kind of ducks!

Considering they're not even a day old they're pretty brave to jump from that height.

Gives literal meaning to taking a flying leap😂.

Do you have that camera plugged into a computer? Or do you have it wireless to your computer? If it's wireless what did u use?

Be careful little ducklings. It's a big scary world out there...
