"Tempo is important in chess. It's free time. It's like having a free move." I've always heard about "tempo" but that statement really helped me understand it!
I remember going over this game when published in Northwest Chess in the 80s, and being very proud to have found those Bxg3 combinations all on my own. In fact, at 26:00 it turns out 31...Bxg3! still works! One beautiful line is 32.Rxe8 Rxe8 33.Qd4+ Be5 34.Qe3 Bd3!! and all pieces are immune: 35.Qxd3 Qc1+ 36.Qd1 Qg5+ 37.Kf1 Qg2+ 38.Ke1 Bxc3# 35.Qxh6 Rg8# 35.Qxf3 Rg8+ mates 35.cxd3 Qg6+ 36.Kf1 Bxc3! 37.Rg1 Qxd3+! 38.Qxd3 Re1# Pupols has good anecdotes about this game in his biography. He and Fischer played blitz all night before the game, but Bobby didn't believe that Viktors would use this hacky Latvian in their scheduled tournament game! Viktors went on to become one of the world's foremost experts on this gambit.
Both players I believe were kids at this time. I can't remember the exact age. Viktors Pupols is still around though. Last year I was actually in the Western States Open in Reno and I got matched against him. Viktors beat me in an endgame where he had a king and two pawns and I had a king and one pawn. I tried to draw the game but I couldn't do it. He doesn't give you much to go on. It's like trying to grow a corn field in the Sahara Desert.
The ending was actually a little different than I remembered because there were rooks on the board but this is the game. Viktors Pupols was White and I was Black: en.lichess.org/6lYWx844#0

Put an Eastern European voice on this video...perfect. Just sounds weird with an American doing the verbal annotation.
I guess this game didnt make it to his 60 memorable games...(with good reasons, though)
Go Uncle Vik!
The name of the video … 1.e4 d4 2.f5 … is that even possible?!
typo.fixed.thx
Exposing the truth shit look fixed to me lol
