    I’ve been lurking for years, great video as always, question about the fuller behind the boss on the reign side, doesn’t this create a hinge point? I’m assuming it allows you to get a wider boss?
    Thanks

    • @gstongs
      @gstongs  Рік тому

      Hi and glad to have you come out of the shadows. You make a good observation. That fuller helps me with spacing / sizing the tong and for defining the pivot area. And the fullers on either side have the small added benefit of allowing the tong to rest better in a rack, depending on how that tong holding rack is made. Thanks for watching / lurking for so long. 😬

    Hey GS, what's the thickest stock you make tongs out of, and what size hartty hole 🕳 🤔 do you have there?? We have a idea 💡 and these measurements would be critical to make it!
    BTW we love the finish that brass brush leaves on your tongs, a real touch of class 👏

    • @gstongs
      @gstongs  Рік тому

      I normally use 14mm rounds for my tongs. Sometimes I go smaller to 1/2" or 13mm and rarely I go up to 15mm. My hardy hole is 3/4". I'll do more detailed tong videos where I give measurements, etc. Thanks.

    • @gstongs
      @gstongs  Рік тому +1

      Hi Lance, it's tough to say - it really depends on the stock sizes / shapes you're using. But if you're using primarily flat stock, then my blade and farrier flat styles would likely be best. And what I now call my gamut style is best if you plan to use bar stock. Thanks for watching. Glen

    I made a set of mini tongs to put a heavy spring in a washing machine. I used drill rod, they worked awesome but boy will that foul up a hammer face if worked too cold.

    Why u never make tongs from some other kind of steel like flat bar. ? 1/2 round is really hard to get a good tong from it very little steel to work with.

    • @gstongs
      @gstongs  Рік тому

      For a person who only hand hammers, rounds make more sense since drawing out the handles to a nice round or tapered round shape would take forever otherwise. And I can upset the jaw ends if I need more material. But I do sometimes use other shapes for tongs. Thanks for watching.
