Lol I swear the way Isaac says, "What?" in this song is one of my favorite sounds ever recorded. You can hear his sarcasm & humor in one word so perfectly.
Freaking love this song. One of those Modest Mouse songs I didn't really get the first, second, or third time I listened to it. But one day it came on and I heard the lyrics a little more, the music felt a little different, and I suddenly realized how awesome it was and couldn't stop listening. I love when that happens to a MM song for me.
Honestly that happens a lot to me with any song. It takes a few listens to digest and appreciate it, then I'm obsessed with it for awhile, and then chill out a bit before I get burnt out on it. However, every once and awhile, a song will blow my socks off on first listen.
This is so true. But the problem with long songs is that they're harder to get people to listen to. 5 min is about the max most people will listen to the same song for it seems. But the majority of my favorite tracks from MM are 6+ minutes long.
There's 15 tracks and this is a double album. Bands don't release 10 minute long songs as singles, but I'd be shocked if there wasn't one on the album.
Honestly, it's not a bad track. The guitar leads are sweet and catchy; the vocals are overstated and nutty; and the way all the instrumentation comes together sounds really loose / chaotic / nutty. I think the way the track smooths out during the pre-chorus is really nice, too.
Once........just once I'd like to scroll down on my favorite bands videos and not find everyone arguing over which is better. As fans, why cannot we just appreciate? I've loved Modest Mouse since 98' and honestly, they're all my favorite. Or to put it another way; My favorite is what song i'm listening to at that moment.
“Ain’t it hard feeling tired all the time? I’m going to bed, to bury my head in the woods right now, scanning for mycelium, bring a little back to town.”
fuck, i love you modest mouse. i love every song and every album. this is one of the bands that have stuck with me through the years. here's to all those little memories behind each of their beautiful songs. my dream has come true and i'm seeing them live in June. Best birthday gift I could possibly ask for. Alaska LOVES modest mouse.
It's kinda weird how Modest Mouse gradually relaxed and found a sense of humor (and funkiness!) but most of their fans didn't. This track is so full of life, so grin-inducing, so dance-able... I don't know how miserable you must be to not like it.
This is my favorite track on the album. I actually think it's the most emotional and hard hitting track. Mostly cynical, poisoned by irony, but with honest vulnerability peaking through now and then, moments of clarity.
None of your business Haha, oops, this is true. How'd I not notice that? Although MM's release has been pushed back...so their release dates are closer now than they were before...
To me this song sounds quintessentially modest mouse. People who don’t think so haven’t been paying attention to the nuances and explorations over the years
Amazing song! Instant classic. That little riff around 0:22 is just golden. And the lyrics are amazing as well, and I just love how it builds up at the end.
I'm liking the later parts of the song (felt the same about Coyotes too). Based on what we've heard so far, it looks like Modest Mouse has succeeded in making yet another album that doesn't sound like any of the last. Nice. Can't wait to hear the rest.
Man, this reminds me of something on one of their first albums a whole lot. But I can't place it?..... Sad Sappy Sucker maybe? Or .....The Fruit That Ate Itself? .. Time to pull out my mouse records. Great single. Love em all so far. Every one is so different and yet very reminicent of former styles from past albums. Glad I pre-ordered.
I'm a long time fan of MM, I've enjoyed just about everything they've put out. So far, I think this next album is going to be great. I'm really loving it!
this song makes me feel depressed. is that just me..? like, its such a sad song, though its upbeat. its like being half asleep and trying to run a marathon, and you havent ate, you're thirsty, and you keep on nearly falling cause you're so tired. You dont even know if this is the marathon you signed up for cause it feels so much longer, and painstaking. You want to lie down and sleep but you know you can't, because if you do, you instantly become a failure in not just everyone else's eyes, but also your own.
They have always had some slight pop influences in their sound. But thats why they have a sound that is unique to them in the indie genre. I think this cd will be a work of art but it will take the full release and hearing each song all together for it to come full circle.
A Modest Mouse fan for over a decade. I do prefer their stuff from the 90's but I love every song that they've ever come out with. I love this song. Isaac Brock is not a god. He actually ages like the rest of us and therefore his taste in music evolves. There has always been zero chance that MM would make the same music they made 20 years ago, however their brilliance is still evident. Those who don't agree just aren't fans anymore. Its that simple
I'm a fan of every Modest Mouse album and all the EPs. I think both the older and the newer stuff have their own unique strengths, but I love both. And I think this particular song is phenomenal. It might be in my top 10, maybe top 5, by them.
The break at 2:25 is awesome Being an old I build a wall and usually take the new material with a grain of salt and don't give it much of a chance.... Well I'll change that as of now because this new album is gonna be awesome
How can anyone not like this? Give it two or three listens... It's MM doing their usual greatness, but does need some getting used to, like every album does.
I thought it would be tough to replace a bassist like Eric Judy. But Russell Higbee, at least in the track, has done fine job! I'm hearing some pretty sweet bass lines, especially at 3:04. I'm so stoked for the new album!
It is good we were left with there old music for so long it sank in. This will sink in as well. I think it's great and if your a modest fan u know what I mean
Outstanding production on these singles. They also managed to make uplifting songs with serious messages, I really dig this. It sounds like modest mouse, it's new and I'm curious.
Very similar to their 2007 album, "We were Dead Before the Ship Sank".... I'm happy with this track. It's Modest Mouse, nothing they've ever done is "Bad".. It's just hard to outdo yourself when you've set the bar so high already.
I really don't get why fans resent this album so much. Modest Mouse is incredibly diverse and I rather enjoy the different styles. I think it's great also that they possess the capability of actually moving away from the same style and still produce some of the best music I've heard. This is one of my favorite tracks of all time and Modest Mouse is easily my favorite band. Very few musicians in my opinion can change things up and still have their same unique attributes which make them so great. This album isn't the best but it's still pretty damn good, and honestly people underrate it.
it's not what i've known MM to be like, but it still sounds so damn good that im not complaining at all. after all, we can only have one Dramamine and one Trailer Trash, so idk what people were expecting honestly

I'm starting to think this is going to be a pretty good album. I liked Lampshades, Coyotes was pretty good, and now this song. I especially like the bridge of this song where it all calms down for a while. I also notice that both Lampshades and The Best Room end somewhat abruptly. I feel like this is going to be a recurring theme in the album and probably has something to do with the overall meaning.
he said "its hard feeling tired all the time" and i really felt that lol
Lol I swear the way Isaac says, "What?" in this song is one of my favorite sounds ever recorded. You can hear his sarcasm & humor in one word so perfectly.
I thought it was mixture of concerned and confused
I find that part a little cringe
@@Neocasturn it's better that way, life isn't beautiful without the pain
But also as Isaac said
"I'd rather never ever see beauty again."
@@anotherkilleramongst lmfao uhuh
and a rare change up from "WELL!" 😜
Isaac has mastered the art of writing a song that is equal parts uplifting and melancholy.
Agree. Soooooo beautiful!!!
Boring
Im convinced that MM excels, if not fully champions, the ability to convey melancholy in their melody. It is the essence of their music.
Freaking love this song. One of those Modest Mouse songs I didn't really get the first, second, or third time I listened to it. But one day it came on and I heard the lyrics a little more, the music felt a little different, and I suddenly realized how awesome it was and couldn't stop listening. Me too!! Happened just the same to me.. and has happened with MODEST MOUSE more than ANY other band ... Ever .. ❤
I want a longer song, I don't know why but every modest mouse song that is longer than 7 minutes is a masterpiece
Good chance there is one on the album, just not the type they would release as a single.
So true. I am sure there will be at least one on the album and probably one more on the inevitable release of B-Sides and cut songs.
On one of their live albums at the end of Paper Thin Walls Isaac says "Life is too short to hear or play Free Bird."
This is so true. But the problem with long songs is that they're harder to get people to listen to. 5 min is about the max most people will listen to the same song for it seems. But the majority of my favorite tracks from MM are 6+ minutes long.

I agree, Banthony Roomtano.
really looking forward to your review in march, anthony
Of course it's not bad. It's Modest Mouse.
sounds like you were really expecting a bad track
ayee swaggy A
Isaac is so fucking cute when he says 'what'
Once........just once I'd like to scroll down on my favorite bands videos and not find everyone arguing over which is better. As fans, why cannot we just appreciate? I've loved Modest Mouse since 98' and honestly, they're all my favorite. Or to put it another way; My favorite is what song i'm listening to at that moment.
I like and agree with this.
One bright spot in my day. Rip to those that died today.
This is my favorite song on Strangers to Ourselves. Hits hard.
This might be one of my favorite songs from them in general
“Ain’t it hard feeling tired all the time? I’m going to bed, to bury my head in the woods right now, scanning for mycelium, bring a little back to town.”
fuck, i love you modest mouse. i love every song and every album. this is one of the bands that have stuck with me through the years. here's to all those little memories behind each of their beautiful songs. my dream has come true and i'm seeing them live in June. 2:22-2:40 is the sound that happens when you ascend from this plane of existence to enlightenment. Thanks MM for the smooth transition.
Still got that unique Modest Mouse feel.
It's kinda weird how Modest Mouse gradually relaxed and found a sense of humor (and funkiness!) but most of their fans didn't. This track is so full of life, so grin-inducing, so dance-able... I don't know how miserable you must be to not like it.
we're MM fans, of course we're miserable...
Don't you know, it's hard feeling tired all the time?
This is my favorite track on the album. I actually think it's the most emotional and hard hitting track. Mostly cynical, poisoned by irony, but with honest vulnerability peaking through now and then, moments of clarity.
I think people that felt that way aren't really fans. This sounds As modest mouse as ever.
We aren't miserable. We just look that way. Sorry?
This song and "Shit In Your Cut" really hits the spot.
Okay this is the second best song shit in ur cut being #1 imo
Modest Mouse has been my favorite band since I was 12 and I'm really digging this track. I don't see any reason to dislike it.
This is such an awesome sound to hear coming from them!!
*Ain't it hard feeling tired all the time?*
2:23 is heaven. This is pretty damn good, I'm excited for this album.
Thanks !!!!!
THIS IS INCREDIBLE! I can already feel that this album is going to be one of my favorites of the year
I want to provide a detailed analysis of this song and how I feel about it, but all I can come up with is...
"Damn, I really like it."
That tasty riff at 1:50...very classic Modest Mouse/Built to Spill-y. Lurv it
Built to Spill-y indeed. New BTS in April of this year too. LONG OVERDUE AND GREAT YEAR FOR MUSIC
Paul Smith Yes I just heard about that last week. Too good to be true, my 2 favorite bands releasing albums w/i a week of each other!
I think you mean within a month of each other
None of your business Haha, oops, this is true. How'd I not notice that?
Although MM's release has been pushed back...so their release dates are closer now than they were before...
I can't contain my excitement!
So far this song has become my favorite off of this album.
Whoever says it doesnt sound like modest mouse is not a long term mm fan. Every song theyve put out i have loved!
Agreed the lyrics are sooo MM
To me this song sounds quintessentially modest mouse. People who don’t think so haven’t been paying attention to the nuances and explorations over the years
This album is gonna be weird. And I can't wait.

Based on what we've heard so far, it looks like Modest Mouse has succeeded in making yet another album that doesn't sound like any of the last. Nice. Can't wait to hear the rest.
How relevant has this song become in 2020? Extremely.
Hoping there are some longer songs, the longer the songs, the more they tend to explore every aspect of this song.
I absolutely love the tremolo'd guitar in the verses, it adds so much depth and that signature MM sound.
I love this song. Got myself singing alone during the dawn and had to listen to it here haha
if this song were a person i would want be their friend
Good old Modest Mouse.Love all the 3 tunes so far.
Reminds me of Life Like Weeds, the way it smooths out
I feel like too many people are trying to call this good because this is all that modest mouse has to offer these days.
Kinda reminds me of 'here's to now'
its not about the best song on the Album it's the one that's got you feeling it.
Can't wait for the full album. Modest is the best.
I love these guys and look forward to anything that they put out. I look forward to their creativity; it's rare today. Modest Mouse has heart.
LCW is my favorite MM album and I still love this song. Why can't people like both eras of Modest Mouse?
Why is this song so GOOD? Modest Mouse rocks!
I'm a long time fan of MM, I've enjoyed just about everything they've put out. So far, I think this next album is going to be great. I'm really loving it!
one of the top songs on the album...I LOVE IT.

Every song released from this album so far? Simply amazing. "Coyotes" is the weakest of the 4, and it's still pure gold. I cannot wait!
the legend returns

most favorite song on the album yet

Really cool groove Modest Mouse are rocking. I like this.
This is my favorite of the new songs released so far, such a classic track
Let loose with your charms
Go reckless, unharmed
We all signed the card
"Get well, but don't you try too hard"
The lessons unlearned
Oh, this meeting is adjourned
Oh, these Western concerns
Hold my place in line while I get your turn
To the empty balconies we serenade
All the playgrounds where them kids don't get to play
Dirty parkies went and chased them all away
To the game consoles to fatten
The best room they have
Is the last room you want
The bathroom's outside
Police tape is tied
To the doorknobs of rooms
Nine through thirty-two
These Western concerns
We beg while we chew
These Western concerns are all I ever really learned to be concerned with
But don't you, don't you know it's hard
Feeling tired every time that you try?
Ain't it hard feeling tired all the time?
The family living upstairs must have a fleet of rider lawn mowers
While the novelist to my right's convinced that every woman's a whore
But he bothers me time and again
To set him up with my very best friends and I say, "What?"
Says he doesn't restate but he will not shut up!
Well don't you, don't you know it's hard
Feeling tired every time that you try?
Ain't it hard feeling tired all the time?
Don't you, don't you know
I ain't goin' to bed
Ring my head in the woods right now
Scan for some mycelium
And bring a little back to town
Well don't you, don't you know it's hard (I ain't goin' to bed)
Feeling tired every time that you try? (Ring my head in the woods right now)
Ain't it hard feeling tired all the time? (Scan for some mycelium and bring a little back to town)
Go reckless, unharmed
Yep, the shut-ins, they're well armed
Well, we all led the charge
'Til we ran aground in our party barge
Every little gift was just one more part of their grift
Oh, yeah, we know it
Oh, yeah, we know it
The best news that we got
Was some dumb hokum we'd all bought
Oh, though reckless, feeling great
We're the sexiest of all primates
Let's let loose with our charms
Shake our ass and wave our arms
All going apeshit
That instrumental in the middle, though. Nice.
so fucking lovely. beyond excited for this album.
So happy I preordered this on vinyl.
Ahhh this album is turning out really good:) i can tell they enjoyed making this album everything just comes together in these singles they released so far:) best part about it that i like is that it still has that amazing modest mouse feel to it :)

I LOVE MODEST MOUSE! They still sound the same as when Float On came out!! I WILL ALWAYS LOVE YOU MODEST MOUSE!!!! *fangirls out*

I terribly hope that Eric Judy has at least some influence over this album. His bass lines were what first inspired me to play an instrument.
