Cliffjumper Replaces Bumblebee as Prime's sitekick
Optimus killing the deer is sort of like a nod to the Iron Giant. He got sad when he saw the deer was dead too.
I like that he isnt a blank slate like Bee or the Iron Giant though, this Optimus is just shocked and becomes aware at how fragile the planet and its lifeforms are to their's which is made of metal.
Saw that page on Twitter and I knew i immediately had to start reading this series
It also just works storwise to show the stark contrast between Optimus and Starscream. Optimus reacts solemnly, finding the world beautiful in its fragility. While Starscream finds it hilarious how weak everything is and just goes around murking things for fun.
Witwicky is a name that goes all the way back to the first issue of the Marvel comic which introduced Sparkplug and Buster Witwicky.
I was going to say the same thing.
Sadly Buster was killed by Ratbat =/ and Spike was heart broken and held a grutch against Optimus Primus.
I thought as much.
It was also the name in the G1 cartoon

Seems to me this is exactly the kind of story I wish the movies would have been starting back in 2007. A hard R rating and real stakes. I absolutely love this.
But also an Optimus that stands his ground against the Decepticons without stooping to their level of malice toward the enemy

Daniel Warren Johnson *gets* these characters. I was taken aback by the insane violence across the first three issues but DWJ understands first and foremost that THIS IS A WAR
And also that Prime's no hesitant weakling despite wanting peace, there's a reason Decepticons fear him
Yet at the same time the guy is an ass for simply killing off Bumblebee simply because he didnt like him. Like dude keep your feelings about characters and the work seperate.

@@potatoexe5410 I have no issue with this, Bumblebee's in the spotlight a lot and I really doubt he's actually dead cause G1 bots are very sturdy, they don't like bleed out or die from just getting shot in the face.
though Cliffjumper here is basically just Red Bumblebee so I have no clue on what the point is.
The story. The pacing. The art.....this definetly is in my list of all time fave comic books.

As a fan of the original series from the'80s I can honestly say I am thoroughly enjoying this.
This reboot actually sounds badass, a more mature Transformers movie universe would be nice after they’re done doing whatever it is that’s going on now. And maybe since the writer killed Bee, we’ll get some love for Hot Rod? lol
I recommend read idw, especially mtmte
And also a more action packed one, IDW stories have been more space opera than actual fights and action for a long time

I loved IDWs take on the Transformers and I love this version as well. I've been a very lucky Transformers comic fan for a while now. I wish HASBRO loved Transformers as much as others who are using their property.

@@HALOX30 I agree with the bumblebee statement. I guess I'm just being open minded and placing myself in a mindset that it's a completely different take on the transformers. Seeing them kill humans the way they are in this iteration is a bit of both shocking and a breath of fresh air but that's just my take. I'm looking forward to seeing how they build on this.

@HALOX30 If he didn't include Bee, people would be annoying him about a character he doesn't want to write or include. Bee's gotten plenty of spotlight recently, so I think it's kind of refreshing to have the main autobot-human relationship be Optimus and Spike - I don't think we've seen that in mainstream TF media, since that role usually gets relegated to Bee or Hot Rod/Hotshot. Closest thing we had was Animated but even then Bulk was closer to Sari than Prime.
@@TheSupaCoopaGaming if he said it was a creative choice then more respect to him but he basically made an emotional choice and is owning up to it. It is not something to be proud of. Also not funny like Arris thinks it is. Usually these decisions by new writers can have major consequences to characters made with a lot of love by the original writers. This is not as big but it is annoying to hear someone just shelving a character like that. He could have just him dying off screen like most of the autobots on the floor (i think that is implied, correct me if i am wrong). So that is my 20 cents on the matter
12:35 are you serious? You don't know that's been the name (Witwicky) since the 80's? In both the comics and the cartoon.
I think the make and model of ones vehicle or aircraft determines whether it will be appropriate for an autobot, decepticon, or anti hero. For example, seems like Chevrolet, Mack trucks, and F-14 fighter jets tend to be autobots while Ford vehicles, Freightliners, and F-35 Jets tend to be decepticon vehicles. Lol!

Optimus was a freightliner cab over in the rise of the beasts movie.
The make and model of their alt modes isn’t specifically what’s used as a dictation for what character is an Autobot and what character is a Decepticon.
For instance there are some Autobots that go against what you suggest. Warpath has always turned into a tank. While not directly stated, G1 Ultra Magnus turns into something resembling a Freightliner COE (with a weaponized car carrier as his trailer). In G1, Optimus Prime also turns into a Frieghtliner.
Then there’s some comparison examples. Jazz, an Autobot, turns into a Porsche, but Deadend, a Decepticon, also turns into a Porsche. Mirage, an Autobot, and Dragstrip, a Decepticon, both turn into F1 racers. Sideswipe and Sunstreaker, both Autobots, along with Breakdown, a Decepticon, all turn into Lamborghinis.
And that’s just talking about G1 stuff. There’s always outliers to the general alt modes of Autobots and Decepticons throughout every Transformers iteration.
The more specific generalization is that the Autobots usually turn into everyday citizen-used vehicles such as cars and semi trucks, while the Decepticons usually turn into more military based vehicles, such as tanks, jets, and armored cars. Again, there’s always outliers, but that’s usually gist of it.
not necessarily there have been many fighter plane Autobots such as the Aerobots, metalhawk, some versions of jetfire, and windblade (there are more). Same thing about ground-based Decepticons such as the stunticons, some of the combaticons, roadpig, lockdown, knockout, barricade, shatter, stealjaw (there are way more).

The last name from the G1 cartoon and comics was also Whitwhicky.
The "Witwicky" surname is not a throwback to the Bay movies. It predates all the way back to the original cartoon and the Marvel comic series.
In the original cartoon, spike and spark plugs last name is canonically “witwhicky”

This looks Great! But, the title was a little miss leading. It said, "Optimus gets destroyed". I'm glad Optimus didn't get destroyed but the title could be more accurate.
We all know Bumble Bee and Jet Fire will be fixed and will return sooner than later.
I never liked Bumblebee, I don't like VW Beetles, and I thought he was pretty whiny and, well, helpless, in the original 80s cartoon.
Bumblebee isn't coming back as stated the writer killed him off because he doesn't like him.

The distrust and fear between Humans and Cybertronians remind me of the old G1 Marvel Comics.
DWJ talks about the original comics being his main inspiration in the column/letters to the editor at the end of the first issue.

The INTERRUPTED Witwickey was NOT a shoutout to the films. The films named the character AFTER THE ORIGINAL SERIES. Sam "Spike" Witwickey was the main human character in the original series.
It’s Teletraan, not Teletron.
“Witwick-“ was a cutoff. That is Sparkplug Witwickey, father of Spike Witwicky, they both, along with Carly are from the G1 cartoon from the 80s.
Teletraan 1 is a computer program, not a machine.

I thought it was farfetched that the rocket compromised Optimus' arm to the point Skywarp near shot it off. I DID like Optimus tearing it off and beating Skywarp half to death with it tho!!!
In the 80s Cartoon it was Whitwicky Spike and his dad Sparkplug. Carly came a lot later became Spike’s girlfriend. There was another girl before Carly. I forget how many episodes she was in.
So this canon suggests that the autobots and decepticons have only been at war for a 100 years
Spike and Sparky having the last name "Witwicky" is NOT a reference to the 2007 movies. Spike and Sparkplug were main human characters from the Sunbow animated G1 cartoon. A blonde version of Carly was as well, being Spike's girlfriend and later wife. The 2007 character was made in reference to these earlier Witwicky's, and the characters in the comic are direct adaptations of them.
