Authenticity is vital to Perry, who remembers the time he was at Rada, rehearsing with fellow actors, when a secret onlooker turned out to be George Bernard Shaw. “He said, ‘I enjoyed your show tremendously. I laughed a lot. But you’ve got to understand one rule of comedy: you must have reality, otherwise it’s rubbish.’” In any case, thanks to its successful repeats Dad’s Army is guaranteed immortality. But to what does Perry attribute our enduring love of Captain Mainwaring and co? “It’s because we reminded the British people of their finest hour. It had wobbly back projection and cardboard scenery, but also the truth… and great artists that brought it to life.”
Simon Blackwell ‘To create comedy that generations of people genuinely love is rare, and he managed it time and again’. Perry’s work on the show - along with that of the producer, David Croft - created one of the most popular British television programmes of all time’.
Jack Dee ‘Amazing contribution to British telly. Watched Dad's Army only yesterday. Still as funny as when I watched it as a kid.’
Vicki Michelle ‘a brilliant comedy writer & true gentleman. He leaves us such a legacy’
Ian Lavender ‘Jimmy, he has been a part of my life for such a long time. ‘He was half of one amazing partnership, it brings back so many wonderful memories… lots of good times together with much laughter…’
David Schneider ‘Thanks to Jimmy Perry for the sublime Dad’s Army, the perfect sitcom, and for making me laugh for over 40 years.’
Shane Allen, BBC controller of comedy commissioning, said: ‘Jimmy Perry is a Goliath of British comedy writing. His work will be enjoyed and appreciated for many years to come’.
Miranda Hart ‘Thank you Jimmy Perry. You made our world a funnier and brighter place.’
Nigel Farage tweeted: Jimmy Perry created and co-wrote the fantastic Dad's Army, my favourite comedy of all time.'
Tom Watson 'We grew up laughing at Jimmy Perry's hilarious characters. One of our greatest TV writers who will not be forgotten.'
Ruth Madoc ‘Being on set was quite hard work, but great fun. We weren’t allowed to laugh. One particular series we’d been naughty giggling on set. This didn’t go down very well with David and Jimmy, so they made us T-shirts saying, ‘Comedy is a serious business’. We were told in no uncertain terms’.
Frank Williams “Dad’s Army was one of the happiest periods of my life, it was a wonderful role to work on.”
TV comedy producer Jon Plowman said, “The quality of his work was consistently brilliant”, adding that Jimmy and his co-writer David Croft came as a package. He described them as “comedy revolutionaries”, saying, “They made it look easy; we know it is not.”
Chris Jarvis ‘this sitcoms are pure gold & will live on.’
Jeffrey Holland ‘There is no doubt that he and David created some of the most memorable and iconic characters and moments in television sitcom history and as such, has left us with a wonderful legacy we can look back on for many years to come. I am proud to have been a part of so many of his series’.
Mark Braxton ‘There is a light that never goes out - and its name is Jimmy Perry’
Perry admits to being bowled over by the continuing success of his Home Guard comedy: “Isn’t it amazing? Let me tell you, I’m overwhelmed.”
Appointed an OBE in 1978, Jimmy Perry published his autobiography, A Stupid Boy, in 2002 and received a British Comedy award for lifetime achievement in 2003.

2023 and still watching 😅
After 50 plus years
All the years of watching, I never tire. A great British gift to the world. Thank you.
Amen and amen !
Proud to be British! 🇬🇧🇬🇧🇬🇧
Yes me too. Never ages.
After 55yrs, I always still enjoy watching the tomfoolery…
Arthur Lowe was the finest comic actor of his generation. It's a tribute to his brilliance, that despite Mainwaring being spiteful and jealous of Wilson, you just can't help but sympathise with him. Sheer genius.
You'd have to marvel at how he stopped himself from laughing because it was unbelievably funny.Bill Pertwee who played Hodges was often seen laughing which was hard not to do.
I adore Sgt. Wilson utterly
"Just link any other customer. The only difference was you, you couldn't get the money" - Godfrey killed it with that line for me.
Capt. Mannering or correctly Capt.Mainwearing so jealous on Sgt. Wilson😅😅😅
This is one of the best comedy series ever... seen it countless times
😢"Smoked salmon at the golf club?" - Always have to think of that phrase whenI'm having dinner at the golf club.😂
I’m 65 and watched on black n white telly and have watched them several times over
How gormless was the band leader! Mainwaring is literally in his face telling him to stop and yet he carries on!
Frank Williams, the vicar, passed away June 26th, 2022. RIP.
It's amazing how Dad's Army can slip in some really dark stuff and still stay light and breezy. Mainwaring's raw jealousy and spite would normally make for uncomfortable viewing, but here it's funny.
Genius writing, superb acting, just the best ever comedy. Arthur Lowe, perfection!
I simply love 'Dads Army'. I have the full series and have watched them over and over - and laughed every time. My father was in the Home Guard during the war, hence the interest.
❤️❤️❤️
The jealousy shines through Captain Mainwaring in this episode. I do not think anyone could have done
so much justice to the character of Cap Mainwaring as did by Mr Lowe. His expressions accommodating the
idiocy, street-smartness, naivety, insubordination, clumsiness, immaturity, hostility aimed at him by
his men and his own haughtiness are nothing less than priceless. This episode is one such instance where
you see him in his full glory. He is by far the best actor of the lot.
@Inti Cheveyo Yes, George is a complete train wreck!
2024 n I stay watching this show EVERY morning b4 work to start my day light hearted with a smile!
John Le Mesurier was a fantastic guy.
indeed. a great actor
I can’t get over how much he makes me laugh, simply by saying, “oh thank you, how awfully kind.”
Absolutely brilliant. He played the part brilliantly. You could tell that Wilson was well educated and came from good stock which Mainwaring was resentful of.Their interaction was superb.
Uncle sergeant the honourable Arthur😂😂😂
I just read and 'liked' every comment and reply.
They were almost as funny as D.A.

One of the better episodes.
Thank you.
Mainwaring really is a snob in this episode, and Hodges is a prat! Love it! 🤣
G
Probably of the top ten funniest episodes (after the captured German submariners episode) in my opinion. Loved this!
Stu Art. The caputured German submarine crew was also brilliant. (I want Plaice). Ha ha Really great comedy
Michael Naisbitt the uboat commander was portrayed by Phillip Madoc a Welsh actor who has passed away relatively recently.
Stu Art. agree but keep them young and beautiful is the a classic
Nah, the one where Pike is a German officer (with eyeglass) is the best :"D
The kilt episodes officers dressed as a cow so funny
this is the final episode to have James Beck that portrayed private Joe Walker in both the indoor and outdoor scenes. R.I.P. Mr James Beck. you will be remembered.
It was 'Things that go bump in the night'
We know our onions
Anarchist Atheist what did he die of--- he was very young
Michael Naisbitt he passed away of pancreatitis (a burst pancreas) caused by years of drinking alcohol, gin and tonic according to Clive Dunn. In The episode things that go bump in the night Jimmy Perry saw James beck's legs and they were purple colored. The only good thing (if you could call it that) about James beck passing on young is that his career never declined and he was near the peak of his career, and we all remember him better.
Inti Cheveyo I know, I said this was the final time James beck was in both inside and outside scenes or in the entire production of this episode. The last episode he was in, (though only in the exterior scenes) was in things that go bump in the night.
although sgt. Wilson has got 3 stripes on his honourable arm, you've got 3 pips on your common shoulder
Beautiful 2022
Comedy at its best. Here for example the show squeeze-out more than a few laughs about an otherwise vexing and entrenched problem ailing British society.
dads army gets better and better ,its uncanny. ... masterpiece comedy

Far out! The honorable Arthur Wilson looks like Tazio Nuvolari with those goggles and leather helmet!
Decent, innocent and brilliant fun..😂
The difference between Mainwaring and Wilson is when Wilson gets the title it does not corrupt him. If mainwaring received the title he would be corrupted by it.
@@kingy002 No it shows how deep rooted the class system was in Britain (and still is). Mainwaring is a product of that system.
@@arbjful I agree with Mark. While it shows that the class system did indeed create decent among people. Mr. Mainwaring allowed it to destroy him. The fact he’s in a position over Wilson, yet is always still jealous of Wilson shows that he isn’t appreciative for what he’s accomplished. And while yes, the class system does make him feel inadequate it his own Napoleon complex that will always do him in.
@@arbjful Oh ffs, lets try communism again huh, it only killed, what, 80 million people yet?
As systems go, the west post enlightenment was probably one of the best.
This entire series is a karikature of Mainwearing, the man 'in power' and all the rest continuously trying to undermine his power and laugh at him.
Try make a series like this under any other system and youll be shot.
So wtf are you complaining about?
Power corrupts. Few man can resist the temptation. Which is why you need a decent system in place, like we actually had before it was subverted by communism.
A great show watching it now in the year of the virus 2020 All hail the lock down.
Great characters - as always. Arthur Lowe was superb. Only thing that mars it slightly , is the over-the-top canned laughter. (but that's the same with many comedies)
Yes, there's a rather annoying woman in the audience trying to outdo everybody else. I have heard her laughter in one or two episodes. If it were really canned laughter, they would have told her to shut it.
Wrong! It was filmed in front of a lve studio audience and it's well documented.
Only Ian Lavender is still alive. Makes me sad. They were all such fine characters.
And Mr Frank Williams ofcourse !
I believe the vicar is still around. 90 something.
And I think the vicar, Frank Williams is still with us. He should be 90 now.
@@iansoutryer3189 Frank Williams just died on June 26, 2022.
@@aduckoutofwater I' sorry to hear that, but at nearly 91 years of age - that's a ripe age. Now there's only Ian Lavender left. Makes you wonder about the transitoriness of life. But there's always "Dad's Army".

LOL... brilliant !
terrific!!
Why is the Band playing "Oh Chtistmas Tree"???...😁😂🤣😆😅
That's what I thought too Leila, specially because the song is only an English version of the German original, titled: O Tannenbaum. I speculate that it was perhaps an inside joke by the scriptwriters toward a portion of the audience, who were on the know, indicating to them how inept was the town's welcoming committee even in choosing a song like that during a time, when the Soviet Union had been engaged in a titanic, life-and-death struggle with the Third Reich. (that is, 1941 Summer onward). PS The song of course is only an innocuous Christmas carol, which has nothing to do with National Socialism, predating that movement a Century at least. Still it's a 'bit awkward to say the least, considering the circumstances.
Its also the same tune for The Red Flag the communist song
wonderful performance from the actor who played the Soviet worker and very well spoken words from him. and believe it or not all Soviet people acted bravely during their Great Patriotic War 1941-45 even their children who worked in the factories while their fathers and older brothers were fighting at the fronts and some of them believe it or not joined some Red Army units and got orders and medals for brave actions in the time where british and american children were playing war in the streets of their towns. for example Konstantin Kononovich Kravchuk (1931-1984) - Soviet schoolboy, pioneer. Known for the fact that, being a 12 years old boy risking his life and the lives of his loved ones, he saved and preserved during the fascist occupation the banners of the 968th and 970th rifle regiments of the 255th rifle division. The youngest holder of the Order of the Red Banner. and another brave Soviet kid Marat Ivanovich Kazei (Belarusian Marat Ivanavich Kazei, October 10, 1929, Stankovo village, Koydanovsky district, Minsk district, BSSR, USSR - May 11, 1944, Khoromitsky village, Uzdensky district, Minsk region, BSSR, USSR) - Soviet Belarusian pioneer -hero, young red scout partisan, Hero of the Soviet Union (posthumously). so not only Soviet soldiers and workers were brave but even their children mr. captain Mainwaring.
Tis a pity that they extremely loved murdering millions of their own then isn't it? The world would be a hell of a lot better if the Germans had of won..
mrs pike is really pretty. Great actress.
I have got the hots for her. Bet she goes like a train.

Ken Watson Pamela Cundell, the actress that portrayed Mrs fox was giggling a lot in the are you being served episode shoulder to shoulder, when Mr Lucas temporarily worked in the ladies wear department.

btw I first saw this series 50 years ago we lived about 50 miles south of the Manitoba North Dakota border.
I wonder what a Russian version of Dad's Army featuring the 'People's Militia' would be like. Probably a lot more depressing.
They would get their daily ration of borscht before being sent to the gulag.
Wow what an ignorant stereotypical bias. Russians have a wicked sense of humor.

Clive Dunn was a good actor, but it always seemed to me that they gave him too many speaking parts,RIP,dear man..❤
18:10 ohhh no, no, no…
The Russian actually speaks half-polish and the interpreter translates incorrectly. She translated the word "welcome" as "congradulate". And the orchestra plays March Dombrovsky - polish national anthem, not the Soviet one.
Aha and we never noticed I wonder why they made this mistake, it's odd of them to make a mistake like that unlike deliberate for some obscure reason..hmmm..
having listened to it again they are playing the communist song The Red Flag.
Or the Tannenbaum - the German Christmas anthem.
Mainwaring you should have told your Russian visitor to go back to his paradise.
the motherland is still the motherland
@ 6.00 All the unscripted giggling.
For those of us unfamiliar with the British Aristocracy, was the title just "Honourable" or was there an actual - and I'm sure I'm using the wrong term here - "rank" attached to it? And am I right in assuming that that position is at the lower end of the aristocratic "totem pole"?
Did a bit of searching, apparently it's the title given to the son/daughter of a Viscount or Baron. The 2 lowest classes of the upper aristocracy/the 2 lowest classes of recognised nobles (below nobles you had knights, esquire and gentlemen - chivalric ranks). It's basically equivalent to Lord/Lady used for Count/Earl, Marquess and Duke.
Baronet is the lowest rank in the British aristocracy and it does not entitle them to sit in the House of Lords.
Indeed.
For example, The Honourable Diana Frances Spencer. She was the daughter of an Earl.
For those who don't know, she was Diana, Princess of Wales.
All English comedy is a satire on class insecurities.
Yes
Those old comedy series were unbeatable for their time. The new movie was merely a pale imitation of the original. you probably need to be a " Senior Citizen " to thoroughly enjoy them!"
i love these and watched as a small child and repeats and must introduce my young children to it soon..these appeal to all ages the acting is superb..
The movie made in 1971 was much better than the 2016 version.
Or toke up a bowl or two......
Children will love the visual comedy, especially that of Pike and Corporal Jones.
When I was young, my father tried to explain it to me but all I got was it was during WW2 and this was not the real British Army but they were likable enough and they were really in a fight for survival against The Air Warden!
I loved that episode where the platoon is on a field exercise and the Air Warden and the verger (I think?) try to sabotage the exercise.
Early teens may not think it's very funny but when you get older, you start to see the great actors behind the character/stereotypes.
Up till rather recently, I just thought Mainwearing was the straightest straight man you ever saw but he can be both straight man and clown.
Walker at 2:51 lol
Historical and cultural hierarchy, high ranks and aristocrats, House of Lords, House of Common, public and private schools and overall the intreging British humor reflecting (smoked salmon .... the golfclub ?!) and digging this society .....

What about the 'secondary' actors?
I do not know about any secondary actors current status I listened to the commentary of the episode battle of the giants and either David croft or Jimmy Perry said a lot of secondary actors were retired artists like singers musicians and music writers.
