Indeed. And I love his character. Mainwaring had depth and was complex. On the other hand a ridiculous, pompous, know-it-all. But also brave, honorable and fair.
I'm 70 yrs old and I remember when I was made a Cardinal, still have the hangover. That was in Tommy Brown's bar in Pompey, off of Albert Road. And Terry Everett was the mate that got me pssssst.
It wasn't acting. He and John Le Mesurier were both heavy boozers, but never together. Arthur Lowe was such a major cocktail addict it's a wonder he never fell off the deck of his yacht, where he did the most of his drinking
Despite Mainwairing's pomposity and desire to climb the class system often backfiring (hilariously of course), his character is genuinely a brave patriot and him climbing into the back of the ammunition truck to retrieve a live grenade would certainly have won him a medal, possibly even the George Cross, something his character never had (to his personal shame and everyone else's amusement). It would have been cool if he had actually gotten recognition by the end of the series, but then again he would have probably been insufferable 😂
I mean, it is shown in the very first episode that he did at the very least get some considerable local recognition after the war. In case you don't know, the first episode starts off with a short scene in the present of 1968, and the rest of the series is basically one big flashback.
@@sudrianliam1199 oh wow! Now I need to watch it all again. Starting with the first one. But sadly it hasn't popped up yet. But good to know , even with all of the reunion videos and other videos of about the dad's army no where have I heard this do dad. Thanks!
Is that not the best? A time in the tent. This is so like our Army's Annual Training. And I'm an officer (former NCO) who appreciates a moment with the 'other ranks.' I'm laughing so hard. Thanks for the laughter!!!
The scene where Wilson pretends the stuffed animal belongs to him is very sweet. As shown in the episode Absent Friends, he was perfectly capable of kicking butt if he had to. But he wasn't someone who needed to act macho. In fact he was shown to be a rather sensitive man, as even Mainwaring once commented. Rather ahead of its time as far as a male character goes. Don't get me wrong, I also love Clint Eastwood's old Western movies that are very macho. But it goes to show there isn't one right way of being a man.
"Here's to the health of the Archbishop of Canterbury!" "Here's to the health of the Duchess of York who's a friend of Cardinal Puffpuffpuff!" "I'm Cardinal Puffpuffpuffpuff!" Omg those were absolutely hilarious!
@Jesus Defender From what I read online, Arthur Lowe (Mainwaring's actor) wanted to separate work and personal life, so he refused to take his scripts home as he didn't want to do anything work-related at home. Square is even more pompous than Mainwaring, from what I read on the Dad's Army Wiki. Mainwaring is pompous, no doubt, but in this episode, Square is to blame for Mainwaring's behaviour.
I've survived those kind of drinking games and this is a completely accurate depiction of them. - Beware anything that makes you do tongue twisters or has a jug in the center of the table
Perry was an admirer of great films. Dad's Army is replete with references to great cinema. Fallen Idol is the name of a brilliant Carol Reed film. Rather wonderfully, some episodes contain references to films that some of the cast acted in, particularly John Laurie.
Arthur Lowe joins the ranks as one of the all-time great comic drunks. (For my money, that list includes Foster Brooks, Charlie Chaplin, Arthur Housman and Mel Blanc!)
Anybody remember Frank Fontaine, who was “Crazy Guggenheim” from the 1960s-1970 Jackie Gleason Show? I was a kid but do remember the show, which was filmed in Florida for a time.
23:15 Haven't laughed so much for a long time. Arthur Lowe proved what a great actor he really was. I suspect that the officer on the right hand side couldn't genuinely stop laughing.
2:53 fun fact: The Mad Bomber was the name of a real-life bomber who terrorized New York City in the 40s and 50s - at the time the episode was set, he hadn't been caught - likely adding to the explosives instructor's nervousness there!
The Air-Raid warden of later episodes was a jackass in his own right, but his use of the name "Nepoleon" in reference to Captian Mainwaring was so on the money at times.
Thanks George 1010th --- I have no idea how a private individual can upload chunks of old stuff from the archives --- did you hack the BBC ? OMG,Mainwaring drunk as a skunk!!Probably the only time he was in ininhibited and showed his human side!!Great work Arthur Lowe & the guys,I've been a fan since I was a kid and am now sharing Dad's Army with my kids and grandchildren.RIP guys.
Something interesting: While Frazer wasnt a communist, Clive Dunn (Jones) was, which made things somewhat tense on set since Arthur Lowe (Mainwaring) was an anti-communist conservative
Ask I am watching this for a umpteenth time I see how in the officers tent when captain mainering pours the alcohol over the pompous windbag head that they were having a great time with that scene.
Perhaps ,one d ay someone will be able to explain how corporal Jones ever managed to set up his own business as the local butcher!!!!!!Perhaps he never knew himself!
It translates very well to German and Dutch (hysterisch/historisch), French (hystérique/historique), Spanish (histérico/histórico) and any number of languages, because those two words are based on ancient Greek and Latin. Subtitle editor probs just missed it.

This is Mainwaring showing his true colors as a snob, and a wannabe. Actually, the actor portraying him reportedly didn't like to socialize with his fellow actors while off the set. Not only will was he a conservative( which was loathsome enough), but he was also a snob.
Nobody does comedy better than the British!! 👍
This is a little masterpiece. And Arthur Lowe is superb.
Brilliant show. I was born in 1982 in Australia and grew up watching this.
What an extraordinary actor Arthur Lowe was!
Indeed. And I love his character. Mainwaring had depth and was complex. On the other hand a ridiculous, pompous, know-it-all. But also brave, honorable and fair.
And he gave a brilliant narration on the original Mr Men cartoon.

"Damn revolving door" Too funny. Arthur Lowe was at his finest in this episode!
Arthur Lowe, turns the stumble of a drunk into a veritable ballet.
A masterclass of drunk acting by Arthur Lowe.
It wasn't acting. He and John Le Mesurier were both heavy boozers, but never together. Arthur Lowe was such a major cocktail addict it's a wonder he never fell off the deck of his yacht, where he did the most of his drinking

Best punch line to an episode ever.
This episode is so funny and Dads army is a funniest episode.

Yes it does lol
Possibly, but the officer on the right (next to Captain Square) definitely was enjoying Arthur's performance. Made it even funnier.
