Came here because they just released the live performance of this song from last year and I have to say that it's incredible how well it still holds up
This is one of their greatest song very underrated if you think about musical structure and storytelling in this one oceanborn album is one of the greatest albums ever done in finnish music history
I never understood the lyrics fully. Is it woman or a mermaid? Is she innocent and taken by the devil in the deep dark ocean, impregnated and sacrificed? Is she already pregnant? Is she sacrificing her child willingly, is she tricked into it? She is clearly making a bargain she in the end doesn't want that ends up killing her. Does the demon child die? Is the devil thwarted? Is that why there is hope at the end? Because I love this song, I can't make heads nor tails of it. I end up thinking of it as the birth and short death of the antichrist. What are everyone's interpretations?
I know that this is an old comment but I'd recommend checking out the song on songmeanings.com the comments there have people discussing their interpretations. In general, most of Nightwish's songs are written primarily by their keyboardist and frontman, Tuomas Holopainen and are often metaphorical/poetic expressions of his own thoughts and feelings. For example, most of the Dark Passion Play album was Tuomas dealing with his feelings of depression and anger after firing their old singer, Tarja Turunen: Poet and the Pendulum was Tuomas dealing with suicidal thoughts, Bye Bye Beautiful was basically a big ol' "fuck you" to Tarja (Tarja hit back with I Walk Alone) and Master Passion Greed was a lyrical attack on Tarja's husband whom the band disliked and thought was a bad influence on her. Long story short, this song is very likely not supposed to be taken literally, and is more likely about something in Tuomas' personal life/his feelings. That said, some Nightwish songs don't have any special personal meaning to them: Wishmaster and Elvenpath were basically tributes to fantasy, a few songs on the Endless Forms Most Beautiful album are a tribute to life and its evolution on planet Earth and Fantasmic is full of Disney references. Ultimately, though, it's up to each listener to decide what each song means to them. I, for example, am getting into Dungeons and Dragons and I'm trying to create my own unique setting for when I'm a GM. I'm using this song as inspiration for my setting's mer-folk. Their "origin story" being that a beautiful elven maiden is kidnapped by a sea-dwelling demon and is forced to bear its children. But she raises her offspring to be kind and compassionate, instead of cruel and bloodthirsty. Eventually the sea-demon kills the maiden and her children rebel against their father and forever afterwards stand against him, limiting his power and fighting his servants in the deep. Cheesy as fuck, I know, but that was the story that this song (especially the ending) made me think of.
It's simply...the birth of all life. We are an image of God. But fallen to the physical universe from Divinity. As Angels fell from Heaven and became Human infants born to suffer life upon Earth.
+SakumaRyuichiNG As soon as you find somebody to replace Tapio Wilska which is not as easy as it seems. Actually... Maybe Floor can do both male and female voice? =)
Alexander Sh Pfff... Even the lady of Jinger can do it... the one in In This Moment can... there's a lot of choices out there... Did you saw the new band from ear label? The one that Tarjas herself into? It reminds me a lot of old Arch Enemy band.
@Smngtr Still has a brilliant career outta them! And she is still a supreme rocker so, she can scream in HER very own songs... I already knew she has left (or actually have been suprisingly been kicked out of) NW, but thanks for informating me... ^_^

@@eurosnuke1678 please, by all means elaborate, where exactly has he ever called his previous compositions anything demeaning? Not to even mention using such a modern buzzword like 'cringy'? He has stated that he dislikes his own singing on angels fall first, but that's understandable, his singing is awful, but i don't ever recall him saying anything demeaning about his past compositions.
I love, love how poetic this is. I can literally imagine this as a whole fantasy story and i love every second of it
Nightwish just doesn't have a single bad song. Sure their old stuff was better but even now they are still better than other bands.
Jacob Moore What song?
***** yeah they are pretty good
+Mike Wazofski Man, Rammstein and Nightwish are completely different genres.
And yeah, I agree that each is the best at what they do.
Imaginarium had one good song on an album of shit and Their latest is gay Bagpiper Gayness. They're not even celtic

3:49 - 4:40 Is just BEAUTIFUL
Melhor parte da música!
Sad no much people know of such great music
That's the truth
just like they say in the song walking in the air They're sleeping as we fly...

This is my favorite Nightwish song :D
My all time favorite Nightwish song.
I like this song. It's much different than any other band I have ever listened to.
1 of their most underrated songs
their best song.
Aldrich, Devourer of Gods.
It sounds like "Unleashed" by Epica. They're both great 🤘🏻
I love this song! well done!
No compromise with the devil
..Simplemente me encanta..

I also ask myself questions about the lyrics.
That's what I wanna know, who is the Oceanborn?
It's simply...the birth of all life. We are an image of God. But fallen to the physical universe from Divinity. As Angels fell from Heaven and became Human infants born to suffer life upon Earth.
Nightwish 100%
*headbanging in progress* XD
It hurts a bit but i think it´s worth it, take some friend to talk it really helps : p
hmmm sounds like a prophecy to me... anyone agree?
Well it is a prophecy in itself I don't know how awakened you are but it's so easy to materialize a prophecy for the one's who wrote them.....
@Lasadialarwen ty ty ty
music used in the Rails of Highland Valley: Run to Revenge Part 5 by CottonBeltSD40T.
@Lasadialarwen well i forgot to put "Leave me be...Leave me be...Leave me beeeeee.."
maybe thats with the screaming.
It's not a scream. It's her head voice at b5 and F6. Her screams was in live at belgium in 1999 she screamed a B6
Hail,Iku - tarsu!
Since Floor brought to life Stargazer again... what about this baby? :3 I fucking love this one.
+SakumaRyuichiNG As soon as you find somebody to replace Tapio Wilska which is not as easy as it seems.

SakumaRyuichiNG they will perform full Oceanborn for its aniversary
She sang this one last night on the "decades tour" :) Was AMAZING!
Charlotte Headrick can vouch, saw them just this weekend and Floor killed it
❤️
How have I never come across this one!!!!! ....I fail
But you do already have the courage inside you, you´ll want to do it while you´re young : p
@Smngtr Still has a brilliant career outta them! And she is still a supreme rocker so, she can scream in HER very own songs... I already knew she has left (or actually have been suprisingly been kicked out of) NW, but thanks for informating me... ^_^

Prophet noah expect the becoming floods
2:45
Nightwish should once make a song with Tarja, Floor and Anette together. That Will help us agree that all three of them sing amazingly
A guy did a video of ghost love score sung by the three of them it is amazing
Tarja technically wins but Anette and Floor are amazing and better suited to NW
This reminds me of Eve and Lucifer from Paradise Lost
@TheFullmoonTraveller Tarja isn't in the band anymore for now 7 years.
Leave Queen alone
LIVIN' LA VIDA LOCA 0:27 TO 0:37 LOL
Multi layered
That piano riff drives me up the wall, I am surprised Tuomas doesn't play it anymore
A snowy owl above the haunted waters
Poet of ancient gods
Cries to tell the never ending story
Prophecy of becoming floods
An aura of mystery surrounds her
The lady in brightest white
Soon the incarnate shall be born
The Creator of the Night
Deep dark is His Majesty's kingdom
A portent of tomorrow's world
There shall the liquid give Him power
The red-eyed unborn lord
Fatal embrace of the blood red waters
The cradle of infinite gloom
The spell to master this Earth
Carvin' on an infant's tomb
"I will die for the love of the mermaid
Her seduction beauty and scorn
Welcome to the end of your life
Hail the Oceanborn!"
"Disgraced is my virginity
Death has woven my wedding dress
Oh Great Blue breathe the morning dew
For you are the cradle of the image of god"
"Brave now long rest is sweet
With me here in the deep"
"I prayed for pleasure wished for love
Prayed for your - "
"Never pray for me!"
"Who the hell are you for me
But a mortal dream to see?"
"This apathetic life must drown
Forever just for me"
"Leave me be
Leave me be
Leave me be
"From cradle to coffin
Shall my wickedness be your passion"
We shall come to set the dolphins free
We shall wash the darkened blood red sea
Our songs will echo over the mountains and seas
The eternity will begin once again in peace
But she can still scream.
@constantine131 Annotations are there for a reason, use them please. You just need to be good with your timing for them to work.
0:02 "and the dep ocean"~
Lol
oh man to listen to this and then listen to something like Amaranth makes me cringe... This is where no one was like them, they were emerald rare.
Ligeia Noire these older songs are so much more cringy tho, like tuomas has said himself
Please! They weren't just rarer than emeralds in Minecraft. They were rarer than finding a fun root canal...
@GHB 7641 *Facepalms* No. Just... Just no...

i have one question though..... wat up with da screaming? just curious...

native english speakers, tell pleace are nightwish`s lyrics correct in terms of grammar and stylistics?
+убийца лохов yes, mostly. But speaking these lyrics might be slightly dangerous xD
hehe)thank you for the answer
+SnowyGolem Good, what about the meaning?
+Ephemera where did I make a mistake?
"Pleace"
Good video but the words come to late
@Aetheraena *slaps herself*
🤔Hmmmmm, King Diamond much? A much too much!
I'm not much of a fan of this style of male vocals for NW. The Islander and The Carpenter are actually my favorites for NW's male vocal styles...
Michael Oakes Planet Hell is the best for me
😈 & ⬇ 🔵 💦lol
@tailsfan12 lol, it's even more funny because it says "and the dep dark ocean" (you failed urself, trololol)
