Wilderness Solo: Berens River Bushcraft Camping Trip
Вставка
- Опубліковано 27 гру 2019
- In this video I embark on a solo two-week wilderness canoe-camping trip through the boreal forest surrounding the Berens River. This was a demanding 170km journey through remote terrain in Manitoba, Canada. During this trip I was able to apply bushcraft skills, including fire lighting, natural navigation and foraging. It was a fantastic experience and I'm very happy to be able to share video of the trip with you. In this video, which forms the first part, I arrive on Family Lake by float plane then start my journey by finding the outflow into Night Owl Lake, where I camp for the first night. This sets me up for the epic journey that's about the take place....

I just don’t understand why Paul doesn’t have 100,000+ subscribers. Class guy and quality videos.
Thanks for the kind words John. I think the simple answer to your question is the UA-cam algorithm. Unlike the more popular channels, I don't publish videos every week. It seems this makes a big difference to visibility. But yes, it would be nice to be able to show these videos to a wider audience. Thanks for your support. It's much appreciated.
Agreed!
Besides Paul Kirtley's already answered I think he didn't monetize his channel because I haven't noticed any breaking in advertisement. And youtube (Google) likes to make money from AdWords or youtube monetized channels. So, based on this particularly level of algorithm, youtube will not put this channel on the top of the list by keyword search, or on the recommended clips suggestions. And indeed, this channel deserves a lot more subscribers.
@@citizenx1602 Thanks for your positive words too. My channel is monetised but I don't stick ads in the middle of videos. I really don't like it when I watch videos and I try to avoid it on mine. Beginning and end is OK though, I think.
My opinion only, the Bushcraft community has exploded in the UK over the last few years and Paul and Ray have actually spoken very poorly about people that have posted on youtube which is not good. Perhaps those people aren't doing things "quite right" but the masses just like to see what real life people get up to and actually learn more from their failings and kit reviews. Paul Kirtley missed the boat in terms of youtube and is trying to catch up but thanks for your postings. 46k subscribers for Paul is great, funky prepper has 55k subscribers and hardly posts any videos - go figure ?? - is it that funkys content is more aligned to the bushcraft community explosion ??
Paul you are an inspiration for all of us who love the wilderness. Your knowledge and skill set are unmatched.
There are many great bushcraft channels but you are the real deal..... Say that with the utmost respect to you and all the bushcraft channels.
You are a true gentleman.
Safe travels sir:)
Shannon Murray, I agree whole heartedly
Thank you for your kind words Shannon. I'm glad you appreciate the videos I share here and I'm very happy they provide some inspiration. If I can bring the wilderness and relevant skills to more people here, then I hope I can get more people to the wilderness too. Warm regards, Paul
I was tort bring all you need .
Take only memories .
Leave only footprints .
If we all lived this way the world would be in a better place .
Great to see your out and about Paul can’t wait for for part two .
Indeed, what you were taught is a good ethos, we should all try to follow. I'm glad you enjoyed this episode... All the best, Paul
Thank you so much for replying . Where you ever a cub/scout sir ?
Take nothing but liberties, leave nothing but hoof prints
Hi Paul, thank you for spending the time making these videos and sharing your experience on your camping trip’s, very much appreciated
Thanks for your comment. I'm glad you appreciate these videos.
Far better than Bear Grills. You deserve millions more subs. Awesome
39:16 Finally, someone cooking up a meal large enough to sustain them out there.
That feeling when the plane leaves... Pure bliss!
Absolutely loved tagging along on this trip, Paul.👍 Just stumbled across this one randomly tonight and realised I hadn’t seen it. I’ll pop the next episode on tomorrow night.

Thank you Paul for the video, I learn alot from your video's the skills of bushcraft and wilderness exploration. And yes your skills and experience is unmatched thank you again for your hard work and looking forward to part 2 cheers!
Hi Zeb, thanks for your positive comments. I'm happy to read you enjoyed this video and that you learn from my films too. This is the best feedback and motivation for me to make more. Episode 2 will be coming soon. I hope you enjoy it too :-) Warm regards, Paul
Paul, I've just stumbled across part 1 of Berens River bushcraft camping trip and seems that the timing of my intro to your gifts to your viewers could not have been better. I am on a bit of a difficult path which I MUST put myself through if I intend to survive. I have spent a lot of time in the wilderness, realize it is my best hope for success and needed it represented in a quiet, intelligent, and respectful manner in order to truly remember and get back to the wander that awaits my reawakening. Excuse my vagueness, but please accept my heartfelt appreciation for your inspiration. You will be a solid link to my success. That much I can easily glean from this introduction to you. Thank you so much for your help. It truly means everything to me an those who actually care for me. All my best to you and yours.
Hello and thanks for your message. I'm glad my materials on UA-cam have resonated with you and I'm happy they will be helpful to you. I'm a firm believer in being in tune with nature and being relatively quiet. I'm definitely not a noisy yahoo! :-) Warm regards, Paul
As always, another great video Paul. Slowly working my way through them all. Immensely enjoyable! Thank you.
Just wonderful * Thank you for taking us along.Looking forward tot the next episode.Best of wishes from Scotland*
Absolutely brilliant Paul, really glad you've released this, and can't wait for the rest of the epic series!

Hi Danny, I'm very glad you enjoyed this. You'd absolutely love the terrain this journey took me through. I'm happy I can take you along via the videos. Episode 2 will be out soon. Thanks for your support mate. All the best, Paul
Thanks for sharing your exclusive video)
The nature in Canada is amazing.
I like this kind of places, especially stone banks along the lake/river.
P.s-I did not expect to see there
a rubbish,left by "tourists".
Truly, I am puzzled-I thought that situation was not typical for developed country like Canada.
Good luck🏕️🎣✌️
On my experience nothing beats a multi day trip in a canoe, the changing vistas, the calming rhythm of paddling and the soulful call of the Loon. The un-interrupted evening routine of fire lighting and cooking food in that timeless way, the womblike comfort of the tent and journey to well deserved and satisfying sleep with dreams of adventure yet to come. Great job Paul.
I can appreciate the leg work you had to do to get the camera is scenic locations.
Great start to an amazing trip.
what a beautiful soul in Paul Kirtley.
Those long solo trip are the best adventures of my life. Thx for sharing. Bringes good memories
Agreed, this type of trip is on another level. I'm glad my video brought back good memories. Thanks for your comments Ulf. Warm regards, Paul
I truly enjoy your video. Makes me remember all the good times with my family. Thanks.
Hi there. I'm glad you enjoyed this and it brought back some good memories :-)
I'm new to your channel, and came here from your axe/saw video. Your production is excellent and heartily earns my subscription. You portray the land with it's calming effect perfectly, and it makes me feel at home. I frequently have traveled similar territory in Ontario, usually solo. I look forward to the next installments.
Hi Paul! I’ve only had the time to watch the first 10 mins this morning but thoroughly enjoyed it so far! People forget that you recording this trip is a large under taking on your behalf. Not to mention the editing of 12 days of footage after, so thank you for bringing us along! Sometimes filming can almost take away from the current experience so again, it’s much appreciated that you took the time and effort to bring us along! Sending you my best wishes mate.
Hey Tom, it's good to hear from you chap. I'm glad you have enjoyed what you've seen so far. I'm pleased you also appreciate the additional effort to film a trip such as this. I can't say I always got it right - too much wind noise and shaky camera in places, as well as the battery dying in a few places that proved inconvenient timing. It's good you appreciate the effort though and I think I do just about manage to convey the spirit of the land I was travelling through, as well as my thought processes around my decisions on the move (you'll see more of the latter in episode 2). I hope all is going well for you. From here it seems you are going from strength to strength. I'm a big admirer of your diligence and work ethic Tom. Keep it up. Warm regards, Paul.
You are the man, humble, intelligent, knowledgeable and a joy to watch every time.
Thank you for your kind and positive words. Much appreciated.
The trash and the losers who leave it ruin areas like this for those of us who enjoy being out in nature. Excellent video. Just stumbled across your channel. Hope your still making videos.
Head facing north to sleep. It's just what must be done. Most enjoyable video.
The North has a magnetism all of its own...
Awesome Paul, great to see so many skills for real. Looking forward to rest of the series.
Thanks! Glad you liked it. I'm excited to share the rest of the series. Great land and a great trip.
Fantastic, Paul! What an amazing place. Great to see you in action and practicing your skills.
Hi Thomas, yes it is an amazing area. I was very grateful to find such a lovely camping spot for my first night there... Glad you are enjoying watching me take a trip like this. More to come soon in episode 2...

Thanks. I'm glad you enjoyed this and it stands well alongside my podcasts. I tried to bring a similar ethos to the film. More of this to come in the New Year. Have a great one. Warm regards, Paul
Very nice! This is the kind of video I was looking for.

Thanks Paul. Glad you like it so far. I appreciate your feedback.
really enjoyable video to watch , thanks for taking the time to make this
You are very welcome. I'm glad you enjoyed watching the video as much as I did editing it. I appreciate your support. Warm regards, Paul
Hey Paul just wanted to say thanks for putting out great content and bringing us along with ya. Stay safe out there. I know your not into kit but could you do a updated vid on your basic bushcraft kit. You did one years ago and wasn’t sure if anything has changed. If so can you tell us why? Maybe go over some of your favorite gear and why.
Thanks Mike. All noted. I think I will do this at some point, yes. I appreciate the suggestions.
That was great Paul. The trash scene was said but needed to be shown. Looking forward to the rest of your footage!
Glad you liked this video. There are a couple more episodes in this series coming soon. Part 2 will be out on January 2nd. All the best, Paul
Yeeehaaaaah! The series I've been asking/dreaming about since you collaborated with Mike. This is just the type of youtube series that I love and to have you do it I just know it's gonna be top notch. This is literally a long awaited Christmas present to me! 👍cheers Paul, cheers very muchly! 🍻
Great. I'm so happy this type of video is right up your street. Thanks for your kind words about it. Merry Christmas :-) I think you'll like part 2 even more. Warm regards, Paul
Hi Paul, I've just found your site. Your calmness and extensive knowledge of your subject which you impart without bs, are a refreshing relief from the usual 'survival' fare on you tube. Would you be ex-services, by any chance ? I have subscribed and look forward to seeing your next travelogue.
Hi Alan. Thanks for your comments. I'm glad you like the style of these videos and how I present things. I'm not ex forces but I have spent some time with folk who are are serving and who have served, both socially as well as professionally. I guess some aspects do rub off, especially in terms of clarity of presentation of subjects. All the best, Paul
Love what you do paul, keep saying im going to book a course with you but cant get away from the kids haha, love it how you no all dif types of plant and trees, that would be something id love to learn so i no exactly what i can forage when im in the woods.
thanks
Hi, it's good to hear from you. I'm glad you liked this vid. Yes, it would be good to see you on a course but I understand it's easier said than done :-) That's one of my motivations for putting material on UA-cam and my blog, as well as producing online courses. It helps the skills and knowledge be a little more accessible and easily spread. Learning the trees and plants is definitely a key building block in taking your bushcraft to a higher level. It was one of the most liberating and enabling areas of learning for me. All the best and I hope you enjoy part 2, which will be out soon. Paul .
Cool movie!
I find it funny watching canoeing video's like this because where i live all the water ways are full of saltwater crocs and you would be mad to do this. If I'm lucky enough to do this one day it would take me a few days to relax I think.
I can't understand why people don't take there rubbish with them, i can understand we miss stuff every now and then but sometimes it is clearly deliberate.
Love watching your videos Paul, thanks for sharing.
Hi Justin, it's good to hear from you. Understood re the saltwater crocs. There are things I do all the time at home in the UK but would not do in bear country. I get into good bear country habits in Canada then when I get home I literally flinch when others do things I've just trained myself out of. It does take a few days to adjust. Similarly, when in Australia, even in suburban areas in the south, you have to break some habits that don't matter in the UK or Europe. I don't get the deliberate leaving of large quantities of trash either. Anyway, I'm glad you feel the same way. Thanks for your kind words about my vids and I hope you enjoy the next instalment. Cheers, Paul
Excellent! Love the first episode and looking forward to part two! Thank you for taking the time to film, edit and upload this. James
Hi James, thanks for your feedback. I'm glad you appreciate what it takes to produce this. I'm even more glad you enjoyed this episode. Part 2 coming soon... Warm regards, Paul.

I find the solitude very comforting, not seeing a soul for days is so reenergizing.......subscribed looks an awesome trip
Yes, me too. It was a very restorative trip for me. Thank you very much for your sub. Warm regards, Paul
Nice one Paul, looking forward to this series. I really enjoy how you share all the realities of a trip like this, and not only the good moments. Specifically, the anxiety felt as soon as you're dropped off in the middle of the wilderness. I'm sure others would feel that same thing, which could be intimidating, but hearing it from you will make others aware of it, anticipate it, and manage it better. Can't wait for episode 2.
Hi Patrick, thanks for your comments. I'm glad you appreciated my approach to this video. I do try to portray my feelings and perspectives in as direct a way as possible. I have no interest in projecting some sort of image on these videos. It's not why I make them. I'm motivated to help people undertake their own adventures by sharing honest perspectives and real experiences. Epsiode 2 (which IMHO is better than episode 1) will be out this Thursday (2nd Jan). Warm regards, Paul
Great film. I love the DH Beaver.
Yes, it's an awesome machine. I love flying in them. Glad you liked the film. Thanks for letting me know.

It doesn't matter if they're quick tips or feature-films of trips, I always enjoy watching your videos, Paul. Thanks for taking the time to put this together. I can't wait for the rest of the series; I feel like binging on the Berens box-set! Well, it is Christmas after all...
haha thanks Robbie. I'm happy you enjoyed this video in particular but thanks for liking all the types of video I make. You'll definitely enjoy the rest of this series. The trip just gets better and better as it goes along :-) Merry Christmas!
Wow... just wow... the trash left behind at that first site. Very sad to see. I love my solo canoe trips into the BWCA, Quetico...etc... I have never have seen anything like that before when canoe tripping. Sure once in a while I will find something that I suspect was truly forgotten and overlooked and left behind... but nothing like that island. Just wow.
Indeed. Wow. You'll have noticed I was shocked. It's certainly an outlier, especially so far from a road. I was shocked to see this so far out. There was a bit of mess at the other end of the river too but I'm thankful the majority of the route was pretty much untouched. Warm regards, Paul
Wow. In fact , double wow!!
An awesome place and brilliantly captured. I was torn between watching the video and appreciating the camera work, shot planning, editing etc. Hats off to your production team Paul!! 😉
Looking forward to part 2.
Haha yes my production team is very talented ;-) It's good to hear from you Duncan. I hope all is well with you. And I'm glad you appreciated the content of this film as well as how it was constructed. Part 2 is coming very soon (January 2nd). Cheers, Paul

Hi Klaas, I'm happy to know this whetted your appetite. Thanks :-)
Paul, I hope you enjoyed your camping trip!
Paul I admire all your videos. This series will be epic. Usually your trips in Canada are with a group but I’m so looking forward to seeing this solo trip. I’m 68 and most of my tips are solo but right now I’m battling cancer so I’m living through your eyes for now. Thanx for the entertainment and knowledge. Greetings from Ontario Canada
Hi Clifford, it's good to hear from you. I'm sorry to read you are battling cancer at the moment and I hope my videos provide some light relief. I'm honoured you can live vicariously through my films for the time being as well as bringing back some good memories of your own trips, all of which I am sure will be a positive for you. Sending you best wishes and positive vibes until you can get out again on your own trips. Warm regards, Paul.
Hi Paul, thank you for taking the extra effort to film and produce what is clearly going to be an informative, and inspirational record of your solo trip. Superb first episode, and I love the fact that you include a lot of clear detail - visually and verbally: great reminders and pointers on the multiple aspects and considerations of the expedition. Looking forward to the next instalment. Happy new year and see you in the woods in 2020.

It is indeed lovely country. And I'm glad to report that it was largely free of trash, despite a couple of upsetting pockets of mess like the one I highlighted in this video. I'm glad you liked the video Sara.

Very Good Paul, two thumbs up :)
Wow what a fantastic effort, I can only dream of doing this! You deserve all the praise you can muster, so informative and you seem so at ease, far more so than when you used to answer those questions of old, how peaceful but also the litter didn't ruffle you as you pointed out you'd come across it before - why can't folks just take care, is it a Northern American mindset of , it is so huge our mess won't make a difference to this vast country but I'm sure it is only a handful that litter! Wonderful, just sublime - thanks
Super, thanks for sharing Paul. Disappointing to see the rubbish but I guess people are people wherever they are. We can but be a good example to them. Absolutely gorgeous environment.
The sound of that engine 😍
Great video Paul. When I'm out and about I take a black rubbish bag and pick other peoples rubbish up and take it away with me rather than just look at it.
Sorry to disappoint but I wasn't going to carry all that trash for 2 weeks through the wilderness.
Interesting to see you look at an environment and see a pharmacy, a larder, different fuel sources, shelter as well as seeing a beautiful landscape. Shame about the rubbish. Some great camera work considering you were on your own 👍
Well done Paul, looks like an excellent start to the trip, except for that garbage left behind. 👍🌲
Thank you. Yes, it was a good start to the trip, despite the garbage. And to be fair, had the garbage island not been messy, I might not have ended up camping where I did. It was a far superior spot scenically, even if the first island had been clear of rubbish. Warm regards, Paul
Sorry I'm late to the party. Just found this video and subbed. Great content and well edited. Looking forward to watching more!
Love the trip so far, that island you stayed on and your tent/tarp setup looked great. :)
