@@asiansrus2 it hasn’t, it was equally terrible then as it is now, and equally good now as it was then. most people just don’t remember all of the terrible sketches from that time that were dispersed amongst the amazing ones. nostalgia can be a powerful tool.
I think Lorne himself said everyone’s favorite era of SNL is the one they grow up watching. Since 1975, with all the cast changing every few years, they’re practically different shows entirely.

When they finally pivoted to Jost being Che’s whipping boy on Update, that’s when they went into the stratosphere. Plus the way he just hangs his head and takes it. Slays me. Norm is and might always be my favorite, especially because they tried to silence him and he did what he wanted anyway. Went out like a boss. But Chost(?) is easily #2. Especially when they go *dark*. The more the audience groans, the more I laugh. And Joke Swap? Well. We all know about that. Nothing more be said.
Norm isn't even remotely great compared to how versatile they had Jost be. Aside from his David Letterman sketch, and probably Celebrity Jeopardy.

Weekend Update is the only reason SNL exists nowadays. Consistently funny, no padding required, it’s the beautiful dessert at the end of a crappy meal.
The opening with people relieving the previous person is pretty funny and of course the getting shot and people totally justifying it ... what a trooper Colin is to take all this abuse!
No joke hits home as well without a straight man to hang the pin on. Jost is among a long line of essentials in the SNL history books.
