    Why is this video not just 10mins???

    • @SollersScrappingandDiving
      @SollersScrappingandDiving  2 дні тому

      Because I do a live premier every Sunday where everybody comes to chat and 10mins isn't long enough for that. Lots of others in the community live stream but I can't do that due to my daughters complex needs so I do a premier instead. It works fine because people like yourself can just skip if they don't like a long video, hope that answers your question 🙂

    Nice episode Sollers! Those pins are all brass and not just plated (well, the "white" ones are nickel plated). The pins themselves are solid brass but when snapped the brass takes on a crystalline appearance. If you were to file across the snapped part, it should look like normal yellow brass 😊

    • @SollersScrappingandDiving
      @SollersScrappingandDiving  2 роки тому +3

      Oh that is good to know because they look really odd inside! I've never seen that powdery looking brass before! See, that is why I love UA-cam! I'll be filing to see that nicer brass then 😁 Thank you!!!

      @@TheUltimateRecycler thank you for your reply! That'll be a right touch i have a fair amount of weight in brass plated wall lights not sure what the real metal is but they're magnetic. Was hoping i could get away with scrapping them as normal brass 😁

      @@milky9306 Sorry, I misunderstood your question! I was referring to solid brass plated with chrome or nickel. If you have a magnetic base metal which is only brass plated, that would have to go as light iron. The scrap yards certainly don't like anything magnetic in the brass bin!

    Great video! Very informative on the plugs. Those 230V plugs with the 3 large brass pins are definitely worth the work. The little 2 prong 120v plugs here in the States take forever to add up to anything! New sub here.

    I do my plugs something like 50 to 100 times faster! Your method is fine for hobby scrappers; I did it that way 12 years ago. However, I'm a full time scrapper and metal refiner, so now I never process any material in batches less than 50 kg, solely by very effective methods.
    I never waste time cutting off plugs of electric wires. My processing method recovers not only virtually every single bit of metal, but all the plastic insulation too.
    I throw wires with the plugs still attached in the reaction vessel in one of my four pyrolysis units. The only sorting is: Thick(heavy), medium, and the thin/very thin ones from electronics, partly because of different processing time, partly because some have very valuable connector pins.
    The vast majority of the insulation material is PVC plastic. This (code #3) type of plastic contains 57% Chlorine, which is released during the pyrolysis process. This (poisonous) gas is either used for Precious Metal refining, or converted into Hydrochloric Acid for other hydrometallurgical processes (acid at no cost, that's what we all like, lol). The plastic is recovered as Raw Pyrolysis Oil, which is later purified and cracked into: Petrol/Gasoline for my car, Diesel for my truck, and Fuel Oil for my metal melting furnace/heating of my workshop. All at no cost (ooh, we sure like that).
    After pyrolysis, now that all plastic is gone, the bare wires can easily be pulled out of the pins, to be separated according to what metal/alloy they're made of. Most scrappers do that, I don't. All is simply melted into flat anodes, and run through one of my many electrorefining cells; powered with free electricity from my 55 solar panels. These old solar panels came in for scrapping, among many others, so I picked out some that's still in reasonable working order.
    Electrorefining purifies and thereby upgrades the copper to the highest value (99.9% purity). All other metal ends up as "bottom slime" in the cell. From this slime every single gram of metals is later hydrometallurgically recovered. It's mainly: Zinc, Nickel (worth almost 2½ times more than Copper), Tin (worth almost 4 times more than Copper), Silver (yes, some wires from High End WEEE (e-waste) are fully Silver plated), and of course the Gold from connector pins.
    As you can see, I'm into a bit more advanced scrapping. In my garden shed I make US$ 250.000/year recycling everything possible.
    I really enjoy your videos, despite the fact there's absolutely nothing in them that I don't already know. You have a calm pleasant voice, and indeed fine British humour. Perfect for watching in the morning while gearing up for a whole day with hard intense scrapping.

    Oldschool 3-pins that you have to shatter with a hammer drive me nuts. Its easy, but I seem to be sweeping the stuff up ad-infinitum.
    Must confess, I take the £1 a kilo my yard offers for moulded plugs. They accept audio plugs, power plugs and computer stuff too, so it keeps the stuff out of my wheelie-bin.

    I don't get a lot of plugs normally, but I have done a few batches of 'plug soup'. Basically the same as yourself, I put them in a large stock pot bring to a boil then leave on very low heat so they don't cool too much. I am still envious of your plugs in the UK. Those pins might be snapping because it seems to be a narrow point where it occurs. 👍

      To get all the copper and brass connections out, that all weighs up as I show, pulling only gives the pins and a little bit of copper, I want it all😂

      If I had big strong wrists and didn't want all the inners inside I'd do the same, I'm ok with a bit of faff! 😉

    So.....E waste Mikes beard just needs to be a bit longer. I suggest glueing some hair on the end of his beard and hair....but take a wee bit off the top of his head. 😊

    wot a waste of time and electric just put them in a good vice and get a pair of nail pullers and in new plugs most of the screws are steel

      I'm good with 10mins of electric to save my hands and wrists, doing it without heating is fine for a few plugs and nice strong people😂 but kills me after a couple of hundred! It's also hard to get the internal brass and copper connectors that way but that obviously works for you 👍
