Growing up in the arse-end of nowhere, the shabby glamour of bands like Pulp and Suede struck more of a chord with me than Oasis and Blur. I couldn't relate to hedonistic partying in Camden Town or the Manchester Ritz, but Jarvis and Brett singing about teenage joyriders, trying to pick up girls at the all-night garage and that general yearning for something other than life in run-down market towns had a magic all of its own.

Relate 😂 currently a teenager in an irrelevant northern town. No glamour, no cosmopolitan excitement but pulp resonates with that really dreary and pitiful existence that is living in as you say “run down market towns” where the only fun is to sort of linger around.

I was at about 50 festivals up and down the uk in the 90s. My mate owned a security company and he would take me down as staff. Then he would pick me up at the end of the weekend lol. I’ll always say this was a time of my life that I can’t really remember but I’ll never forget. Drugs at the time where the best they have ever been. Now I’m a 40 year old man enjoying my mid life. Maybe one day I’ll do an old school for a weekend and relive it.

Bluetones, Sleeper, Echobelly, Elastica and even though they weren't REALLY Britpop I've got to list them as they were the best British band of the decade in my opinion, Manic Street Preachers.

Odd band. Late developers weren't they, but what a blossoming. Those girls at the start would be my age now, which is impossible.

As much as I love some modern pop music, it's become even more generic than it used to be, so unfortunately not a lot has changed even after Jarvis' hope that it would become more adult. Lyrically it's pretty basic nowadays.
